I bought it because I loved the original Shogun TW, so far I am very disappointed, the difficulty feels fake, like foot troops easily outrunning cavalry
BioWareLove if the other soldiers was spearman (I forget the name of the cheaper units) then no doubt your cav would run, simple tactic against cav is the spear wall
Here is a tipp that is often very underrated, even though it probably is a mistake that cause many beginners to fail early in the campaign already (it was the case for me for example): *Don't put garrisons in your towns unless it is neccessary in a specific moment!* With that I mean that many beginners think: "I need to defend my towns, so I just put a bunch of units in every single town of mine so nobody can take it away from me!". That's a common, but huge mistake which I made in the beginning as well. Units you put as garrison into your town cost just as much money each turn as if they would be in your armies and conquer new provinces for you. And the problem is, a few units, which are already quite expensive, won't even make a big difference if the town is attacked by a huge enemy army. So to fill this idea with sense, you would have to put a lot of units into your towns, maybe even in every single town you have. But that would cost so much money that you wouldn't be able to pay (bancrupt incoming). There are only 2 situations where you would need to put a garrison, but only for a short period of time. 1st one is when the town is threatened by an enemy right now, for example when an enemy army is marching right onto it. You could put some units as garrisons, at best one of your armies that is currently near of that town, to defend it, but after that put them out of the town so you can use them to conquer new provinces. Never let them stay in it even though it isn't threatened anymore, they cost so much money even though the units don't do anything for that time. 2nd one is when there is unrest in the town, a few units as garrison can surpress that to prevent a rebellion. Again, put the units out of the town (or disband them if they aren't needed anymore at all) as soon as the unrest is gone. In the beginning, I always put so many units into my towns, causing either a financial disaster or that my offensive isn't strong enough to increase the size of my empire. Both will prevent you from being successfull in Total War (not only Shogun 2 obviously). I made that mistake for a long time and it always frustrated me that I wasn't able to win a campaign, even on easy mode. It changed big time when I figured out that single mistake.
when you conquer a new town, they alway have the resist that make the happiness at great minute (-), and th only way you can do about that is garryson unit and wait un still happines raise to positive point ( and it take a long time). until that , u hav no armies no do anything else but garison to prevent reblion with a huge number . The second, NPC alway tax thier town high and make it poorer every turn, and whn u capture that town, it just a pice of shit that u can do any thing but garryson to prevevent rebellion ( it easyr for you if u can complete detroy that town,
That only works if your towns aren't constantly under unrest. Having good honour, good Chi bonuses and low taxes allow one to get away with little to no garissons.
I will put 1-4 garrison each castle (depends on number of repression), u also can place a monk/metsuke and dont charge tax after capture new provice to reduce unrest. If u scared your province attacked by other clan, put some naval unit to secure coast from enemy landed.
Thats what I did, i put few units only in the town i just conquered because orherwise there would be religious strife (-10 public order ), but my religion is growing so slow ! ( +5% per town ). How could i make it grow faster ?
Hey, I can never seem to find anyone who is willing to tell me about these two things. 1. how do you show the position of the other units when moving another unit? 2. when placing units on a wall, how do you stretch them out?

I was wondering how different the "Total War" games were from "Starcraft" which is the only RTS I've played. I'm interested in playing the "Total War: Warhammer" game that comes out next year. Your video filled me in nicely on what to expect, it's closer to a board game experience than what I'm used to, but it looks like it could be a lot of fun and not as crazy complicated as I thought it would be.
+Cesar “Isaac” Perez I've never played StarCraft so I wouldn't be able to comment on any differences, however I am a long time player of the Total War franchise so will be able help :)Its more or less what you saw in this video. There will most likely be subtle changes when Total War: Warhammer comes out but the format hasn't changed much over the years.
Can't thank you enough, had the game for a long time, but have never really got on with the newer Total War games, medievil2 being my favourite (where else can i destroy the english with my beloved Wales?) ... but this vid has inspired me to give the game a go again.. Diolch yn fawr.
This is my first time playing strategy game. My first total war game. After getting the game, I have no idea how to play the game that's why I'm here 😂
Thank you & cheers from the Netherlands. As an avid Medieval Total War player I'm still getting used to this 'new' format. I just wished they would give us another Medieval Total War game. I miss it.
Tip from newbie: Dont recruit 12 Bow/Archers I attacked a castle with a considerable army size and all my melee units died so I used the archers to attack from long range, I slaughtered half of the AIs army but then they all ran out of AMMO and I lost lol.
I have been trying to get into RTS games and I have been having issues from not only being confused but being a little slow :P but I started playing this game because.....Awesome Concept (Total war) So I hope this can help me understand a little better.
Well well well. I take a brake from gaming and when I finally come back I choose this game and what do u know the 1st vid for a guide is YOU! Must be fate buddy. Thx for the tips. helps a noob like me big time :D
Recently bought napoleon and this, tried to play napoleon because I heard it was easier. I beg to differ because almost every unit has guns and it is hard to line them up properly and how to line charge while this game is easier and has more variety in units even though I prefer the napoleonic wars but this game is so much better
I managed by 1577 to win using the Oda. I never traded using ships. I just made trade agreements and alliances with Northern Daimyos then struck south. Soon I had surrounded Kyoto. Then I took it and became Shogun. Then all the other clans attacked and I simply defended my gains in the south and conquered the North. By 1577 I was the true Shogun ruler of all Japan.
this game is a shock after Rome and Medieval 2. The small size ofJapan makes the campaign map very detailed in how settlements work. The UI i different too. I'm gonna git gud though.
I know this is a four year old video. Just a comment on when/if your daimyo dies. In my Date campaign, Harumune died fighting Takeda Shingen. Your realm enters into a regency since Harumune has an heir, Terumune. Lady Karu will become regent until Terumune comes of age and becomes daimyo. However, your generals take a loyalty hit due to the daimyo's death. One way to remedy this is to research Noh (+1 loyalty) or assign a metsuke to the general's army.
I genuinely do not understand how to play this game and actually have fun, my units are literally just not listening to what i tell them, and whenever I try to get in a battle, the enemy just goes after my ally and by the time I get there my ally is already dead, so I either win because of my ally and not have fun at all because i just did nothing, or I lose because my units don't get to the battle fast enough, I am definitely doing something wrong, but I don't know what, and I extremely regret the fact that I bought this game.
I keep getting decimated even on basic settings. It's an interesting challenge, I haven't felt anything like that since trying to play chess. Granted it would be a very similar premise in knowing how to properly use units/premise. Most games I play may or may not have such strategic reliance and if they do, they could be baited with RNG and luck. Still I find the idea of trying to learn to adapt and strategize would be fun.
just played this game and it's amazing. It's quite in-depth, and to be honest, very complicated. I need to watch some tutes to understand the many nuances of the game.
Sick game for free atm.. Im thinking of getting an other one.. I know im going to buy medival II for the lotr mod 100%, but the main question is are the other TW games just thematic reskins of eachother? or its mechanically different. How does for ex. warhammer compare to shogun 2?
all the total war games feel so vageau to me played alot of civ thats very straight forward compared to this no clue what im doing what my city needs this didnt make it better for me lol

When you're on the battlefield and you move your units into position how do you get the yellow indicator to STAY PUT and not go away when you select a different unit? I'm not finding an option or anything
I just got this game for free on steam and I started a campaign as the Shizuma in normal difficult, I’m in turn 41 and can you tell me how to stop any Christian revolts because I token some of the Ottom land and Christian uprisings are happening. I been sending metsukes and monks but it don’t seem to be working efficacy, also how do I get more monks or can I only get one?
+Marshall Jacobs Unfortunately Naval battles are probably my weak point. Best thing to do would be to upgrade your ports to a military port as quickly as you can if you are going to focus on naval supremacy. Maybe go for the Nihon Maru ship, Its pretty deadly with decent hit points :)
2 Sengoku Bunes + 3 Medium Bunes + 3 Bow Kobayas (Fire Arrows preferred) + 2 Fire Bomb Kobayas will autowin almost everything AI can throw on you. Black Ship should be fought by hands: send M. Bunes in frontal attack, Kobayas little behind, Sengokus to flanks outside BS cannons range; board as soon as possible by Sengokus at the same time surround with other ships; don't forget to activate Battle Cry on M. Bunes one by one when massacre starts. In general naval fights should be mostly melees so Sengoku Bunes and M. Bunes are must have. Bow Kobayas with Fire Arrows could be very devastating, but should avoid melee fight (even Trade Ship almost always beats Bow Kobaya if goes strait to melee). Fire Bomb Kobayas are superior morale destroyers, but even more fragile than Bow Kobayas - use with care. Most universal ship is M. Bune - very easy to build, quite cheap, good at ranged and at melee. Barebone of any medieval Japan clan's navy. Support it by more specialised ships - and you will rule japanese shores! :)
The only problem I seem to face in this is game is money. Probably because I have... A little too much peasants watching over towns... Otherwise Yari Ashigaru are good if they aren't fighting katana boys. Katanas melt spears
You have heard of rice paddies before, but definitely NOT rice paddles....but still went with calling them rice paddles. Confidence in the rest of this video is veeeeery low now, lol.
Not sure if it's just me but I've bought the game today and some of the dlc, whenever i load up the game none of the dlc is showing even though it says i own it on steam? Any ideas on how to fix this?
have been 'trying to play ha on easy and am destroyed by riots or stronger armies so it means im easy ?? could you tell me if its possible to upgrade established armies when you build an armoury etc ?? find game difficult tp balance food money armiea navy citizens happiness it seems almost impossible to me
1 turn before capturing Kyoto everyone declared war against me, after that half of my provinces rebelled my armies have been battling non stop and even tho im winning all the battles i dont have money to replace the units i have lost defeat seems inevitable.
Thanks for putting this up.I've had this game for almost 2 years and its been sitting in my Steam account b/c no time to play. This tutorial has sparked my interest in the game again. What do you think of Total War: War Hammer?
No problem, glad its sparked your interest again, its a great game :). I'm enjoying Warhammer a lot so far, they've done a good job and I think it was a good idea to move into a fantasy setting as it keeps the series fresh.
thank you for your tutorial. I started playing total war 2. I was quite versed in the 2010 version. Very impressed with the graphics of the present game . I am disappointed though that no matter how low the difficulty level I am unable to make any progress. I am always stuck with poor economy, hunger and no allies no matter how hard and early I try. Never make a harbor quick enough to secure a trading rout. Its like I am playing at the most difficult level , yet I am at "normal". Can you suggest what I am doing wrong??
mariano de miguel First of all. Economy. Remember yari ashigaru is your best unit. Cheap and no tech needed. You can recruit it everywhere. Make use of yari wall everytime you attack with yari ashigaru. Yari ashigaru with yari wall can hold on for quite a long time even against samurai unit. When you tie down enemy unit with yari ashigaru. Use some spare units to attack them from behinds. Yari ashigaru based army fight "morale war". Meaning you hold on until enemy give up. Samurai based army is attack based army. U kill them all. Dont build army tech building here and there. Use choose 1 or 2 provinces as samurai armies production. For economy based provinces. Upgrade farm , sake den, market . And i believe you need to watch how people play legendary campaign to see how they win battle. I think that is your main problem. ( unable to win battle with less casualties, over rely on unit superiority ) I did reply to your other comment. Check there. I dont want to comment too details as this is somewhat old comment and you may already stop playing shogun 2. And one more thing. Dont too obsess with trade node. You cant hold it anywhere in early game. Let me do the math for u. You will need full stack ships to secure that node and another full stack tradeship for it to generate positive income. In early game. You dont have the economy to support 2 fleets. Sure you can hold on to it for 1 or 2 turns. Or with a few trade ships. Maybe around 500 koku per turn. But how many u have to spend just to earn that 500 koku? Only contest for naval battle when you want to transport your army long distance or you want prevent AI from sending army to attack you through sea behind your border( sneak attack). I usually ignore contest for sea control. Focus on land. Only go for sea after realm divide. If you really want to learn. I will teach u in detail.
Get markets put High level metsukes on your best money making provinces also on gold mines use ashigaru units for early game for there low upkeep dont get samurai units that early they will destroy your economy since of high upkeep get high level farms on fertile soi
The steam announcement about it being free brought me here!

Was debating weather to get this until I saw this tutorial, I am now positive I want this game. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed the tutorial, its a good game :)
Just got this free on steam!! Have no idea what I’m doing
All the best with the game, I wish you well in your future campaigns.
Just got Shogun 2 for free on steam and am already lost. Thanks for the tutorial! Seeing tons of potential with this game
Can't thank you enough, had the game for a long time, but have never really got on with the newer Total War games, medievil2 being my favourite (where else can i destroy the english with my beloved Wales?) ... but this vid has inspired me to give the game a go again..
Diolch yn fawr.
Thanks Andy, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Theres nothing quite like beating the English, some of my best memories are with Wales on Medieval 2.
I miss it.
No problem, glad you found this useful and thank you for taking the time to comment 😊
Tip from newbie:
Dont recruit 12 Bow/Archers
I attacked a castle with a considerable army size and all my melee units died so I used the archers to attack from long range, I slaughtered half of the AIs army but then they all ran out of AMMO and I lost lol.
So what should I do instead
Dem rice paddles.. XP but yeah, more vids like this??
Thank you very much for this nice Tutorial :)
Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you enjoyed it:)
This game looks so smooth... what are your settings?
I have been trying to get into RTS games and I have been having issues from not only being confused but being a little slow :P but I started playing this game because.....Awesome Concept (Total war) So I hope this can help me understand a little better.
+WhyMeProductions Hopefully this helps you. I've been playing Total War a long time and felt compelled to make beginner guides to help new players.
You can play battles in slow-mo in S2TW if have speedclicking problem ;) (not on Legendary difficulty unfortunately). I sometime do :).
Well well well. I take a brake from gaming and when I finally come back I choose this game and what do u know the 1st vid for a guide is YOU! Must be fate buddy. Thx for the tips. helps a noob like me big time :D
No problem Afon, glad you found it useful :)
Thanks for this guide brother :)
Hey Dragon, thanks for that tutorial, ive been searching online for some help with this game and your video has been the most help so far.
+Heath Johnson Thanks Heath, I'm really glad you found it useful :)
***** Got the tutorial video up if you need it :P
+Welsh_Gaming too*

I’m gonna cum 11!!!,w!
I'm gonna git gud though.
still helpful in 2024 thanks for the information
Thank you for the kind comment, glad you found this useful 😀
What button did you press to see where you infantry will go?? But nice video huge fan.
I came here after the game was announced free, thank you for the tutorial mate! Stay Safe!
I love the victory music! It makes me happy lol
Its like civilization on a sushi bukakke diet
Ehem, Rice Paddies! Thanks for the video.
Can someone tell me how you can see your yellow marks on the floor ofe the battle all the time?
Hold down the space bar and it will show up for you.
just played this game and it's amazing.
How does for ex. warhammer compare to shogun 2?
huh, never knew that you could just employ a classic pincer every game and win
all the total war games feel so vageau to me played alot of civ thats very straight forward compared to this no clue what im doing what my city needs this didnt make it better for me lol
Hey DragonHeart! About 3 months ago, I found this video because I was looking for new games to play. After I had watched you play, I bought Shogun 2 and fell in love. You've sparked my interest for the series. Thanks! YAR AMAZING
+Michael Tran No problem, I'm glad you found this video helpful, its a great game, one of my favourites :)
Windows 10, my game always crashes whenever i get into battle loader screen, be it tutorial or campaign.. Any help? please guys. I have base game and turned off windows defender and firewall to no avail! Somebody please help me! 😭
Thanks mate ☺☺☺
When you're on the battlefield and you move your units into position how do you get the yellow indicator to STAY PUT and not go away when you select a different unit? I'm not finding an option or anything
I hold the space bar. This shows Movement orders and where troops are positioned :)
What do you mean by 'replenish' when staying behind borders? Does that mean that the units re-up after taking casualties? Or is it a supply issue?
I just got this game for free on steam and I started a campaign as the Shizuma in normal difficult, I’m in turn 41 and can you tell me how to stop any Christian revolts because I token some of the Ottom land and Christian uprisings are happening. I been sending metsukes and monks but it don’t seem to be working efficacy, also how do I get more monks or can I only get one?
Bought this game today and needed a lot more guidance. Awesome video! Taking these new tips into battle.
+Marshall Jacobs Awesome, glad I could help out. Let me know how you get off in your first campaign :)
I've started over numerous times but I think i'm onto something. Any tips on a strong naval force though? I get overrun in nearly all battles.
I dunno if you still care but medium bune stack
The only problem I seem to face in this is game is money. Probably because I have... A little too much peasants watching over towns... Otherwise Yari Ashigaru are good if they aren't fighting katana boys. Katanas melt spears
I’m so used to medieval 2 it’s is so different I couldn’t get into empire total war this one looks kinda similar to med2
Really great tutorial. Did a good job of breaking down the game and giving tips that I didn't learn in the tutorial.
Phillip Brown Awesome, I'm glad this video was able to help you :)
Any ideas on how to fix this?
have been 'trying to play ha on easy and am destroyed by riots or stronger armies so it means im easy ?? could you tell me if its possible to upgrade established armies when you build an armoury etc ?? find game difficult tp balance food money armiea navy citizens happiness it seems almost impossible to me
Is there any field battle video? I mean like land, siege, or battle tutorial. This game is too hard and morale of army is confusing..
Didn't play this game for 2 years guess I give it another try with this tutorial, never won a game was way too difficult for me
The game is really good once you get in to it, I hope it goes well for you.
THX for everything
+ONLY GAMES No problem, glad it helped :)
Old video so i dunno if you've sorted it out yet. Some distortion on the left speaker for some reason. Maybe your mic if you have a stereo mic?
7:20 "Rice paddles." They're like oars but made of rice.
7 campaigns on easy lost all of them, took me long enough to try and get help
Got it for free on Steam but I think I'm too dumb to play this game. I just want to blow shit up :(
Rice paddles.... sounds.... dangerously...delicious?
They are indeed :P haha
can I ask how do you see where the unit will go and whaat face I don't know what is it called sorry the yellow thing at this time 19:11
thank you for your tutorial.
( unable to win battle with less casualties, over rely on unit superiority )
I did reply to your other comment.
I made exactly the same mistake with the drop-in player selection. Poor UI.
