  • Roof pressure test adopted from same test for passenger cars. C1 exceeds the requirements to pass this test. Belt tension test "Fall from standstill" test. Various preparations for the tests at the BMW crash testing facility. Test procedure 1. With a dummy, 2. With C1 project leader at BMW AG, Motorcycle Division, Reinhard K. Schadt. In addition, high speed takes of the tests.
    The impact energy is filmed at the shock absorption elements (10 :39 :14) on the shoulder bows. Chart: ISO 13232 (Motorcycle Crash Procedure) representing the seven most important crash tests for this standard, which were applied during the development of the C1 safety system. Frontal impact: passenger car travelling at 22 mph strikes the side of a stationary C1. Offset crash: C1 travelling at 30 mph and with an overlap of 8 inches collides head on with a stationary passenger car and scrapes along its side. Frontal impact at 90 degrees,both vehicles moving: C1 travelling at 30 mph hits side of a passenger car moving at 15 mph. Frontal impact at 45 degrees, both vehicles moving: C1 travelling at 35 mph at a 45° angle (coming diagonally from rear) hits side of passenger car moving at 15 mph. Frontal impact at 135 degrees, both vehicles moving: C1 travelling at 30 mph at a 135° angle (coming diagonally from front) hits front of passenger car moving at 15 mph.
    Drop test: impact-absorbing element and fork are being optimised to ensure maximum energy absorption. Simulated impact on a stationary passenger car. Sled test: serves to determine settings of belt system. Simulation of impact at 35 mph against a rigid barrier. Skid test (single-vehicle accident): C1 is suspended from a pickup and accelerated up to 35 mph, then released (slides across asphalt on its side). Simulates the protection afforded by the frame upon impact.

    It is nice to know when you see big name companies like BMW that would really provide high safety feature for a basic motorcycle.

    Imagine this with an electric motor and even better design in 2022. It would be a game changer.

    That’s amazing. When we think about when it was for sale, than it’s fantastic piece of technology. Yes it looks weird, or ugly, but it’s fantastic. They knew, what they’re doing. J

    When these came out part of my job was taking them to BMW car dealers in the UK. They didn't go to the bike shops.
    In my experience the BMW staff taking delivery of them had no bloody idea what to do with them. Half of them ended up on the floor because the people taking them couldn't work out the 2 lever system for the stand and quite a few of the rest got dropped in the carparks by the sales staff.
    Yes, I rode one a few times. Yes, it was as fucking awful as it looks.

      Aww that sucks. I remember seeing one as a kid and I was excited because it was like a cozy bike. I've never ridden a motorbike but I'd love a Piaggio MP3 or a really massive tourer 😁

      @@weaponofmassconstruction1940 Once you get used to the quite high centre of gravity, it's quite fun to ride and, especially in rain, way better than walking or driving with a normal motorcycle.
      I can also confirm that tipping over in it does not hurt a bit, if at slow enough speed there is not much damage done either (Yes it was my first ride with it and I took a corner too slow (because I drove it after drivers ed with not much experience. )). However, I would not trust anyone else to drive with it, fearing that they also might have some issues in the first corners.

      Ive been biking for 35 years, got one of these now and as a commuter its fkn brilliant once you get used to it.

    While the safety is probably much better than a 'normal' bike, the way the dummy's neck bends in these impacts makes me wonder how a rider would fair in an accident?

    • @Thirsty_Fox
      @Thirsty_Fox 2 роки тому

      Absolutely horribly... much better off being ejected from the bike rather than having to stop dead with it (and then going along for the ride wherever it ends up). The forces on the body in these examples are extreme.

    • @maxstafford4007

      It needs a head strap like you have in race cars. But then your brain would slam in your skull.

    • @jemand8462
      @jemand8462 Рік тому +2

      @@Thirsty_Fox it's exactly the opposite what you want: the human body can resist EXTREME g-forces for a very short amount of time like in a crash. What you want IS to be completely fixed to the car/bike. That's what airbags are there for. They are not a soft cushion, their purpose is to connect the body to the car as quickly as possible so it can stop as fast as possible - NOT being ejected and hitting hard things with your body.
      Hitting your head on the hood of a car is deadly. Nodding your head ISN'T.

    Two wheeled scooter with roof is very hard to ride on crosswinds. A reverse trike version like the Adiva series of scooters with roof is the ideal one. But theres a much better one, too bad its declared buncrupt after building only 10 units..... the French Smera.

  • @Psykomancer

    As a motorcycle driver, I call bullshit on this test. Motorcycles don't crash like cars do and such a head-on collision is extremely rare. You are most likely to slide on your side and the roof and belt turn this into a death-trap, forcing your body to grind the asphalt for the full length of the slide, instead of disconnecting.

    Seat belt may protect from face hitting the handle bar in frontal impact, but prone for neck whiplash

    • @Watson2108
      @Watson2108 Рік тому +2

      The seat belt prevents you from being ejected out of the thing, same as a car. Whiplash is much better than flying through the air

    • @jemand8462
      @jemand8462 Рік тому

      whiplash isn't the movement forwards (nodding) but the countermovement backwards afterwards - or if you're hit from a car from behind. Your neck is built to nod like this, it's the reverse motion that it's not built for. Because of the headrest, there's no risk of whiplash.
