    Thanks for this, and for leaving in all the awkward bits where things don't magically pop off - that's what always happens to me in real life, but watching most videos on youtube you'd never know it. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!

    Appreciate the part at the bench, showing the metal frame being bent to the dash kit. Recall from using one a long time ago, it wasn't self explanatory. About to replace 2 stereo.

    The harness is used to connect the OEM connector to your new stereo. Most car stereos will not just plug into any car. The original plug is paired with the plug on the wiring harness. So, yes, if you're adding a new stereo you'll need a harness.

      Great video! I installed an aftermarket stereo replacing my factory stereo on my 2002 Ford Explorer about a year ago with this video. I bought a cheapo single din with the slot I currently use for receipts and it has served me well. I recently decided to treat myself or maybe punish myself, lol, and bought a double din cheapo w/ navigation and reverse camera (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01E71ISNS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and a TV tuner add on. I forgot what I did so I am watching your video to refresh myself to install this beast! Do you know if I will need to rewire a new wiring harness being I already did for the current stereo and if so what is the url of your harness video? Any tips on installing the camera and tv if you are familiar with that will also be appreciated. Maybe you can upgrade to a double din beast and make a video on that too? That would be awesome for me!

    My wife also got a nice pair of speakers for Christmas. I just haven't installed them yet. That will be the next explorer specific video. As to whether you need an amp or not, good quality speakers make a huge difference in sound quality. Beyond that, it starts to be limited return on investment.

    In this particular case everything was ordered from Crutchfield. They have a great app on their website that helps you identify all the necessary bits for most modern cars. Alternatively any stereo shop/best buy carries the stuff in store.

    I installed a stationary antenna on the 99 /from a explore without power antenna.
    Because I can't find a power replacement!
    Now I need an antenna coupler.
    Now I've got two male antenna ends.
    I'll see after I get the coupling if it works.
    It's been a long while since I took out the power antenna.
    Seems like it had wires that might have went to the amp.in the rear?
    Too bad I can't get the power antenna.

    The installation as you show it is great, but will leave you with a unit that moves and rattles in the dash. It needs a rear support. In your installation kit is a triangular plate with slots that almost make a t. This mounts to the back of the radio and slides onto a track that is part of the car. When you slide the unit in it glides on this track like a kitchen drawer and the installation is as solid as factory.

    You should never use a flathead screw driver to pry the trim of your dash off. A plastic pry tool or something flat and plastic that you can use as a pry tool is a better option. Looks like he nicked his vinyl dash. Not to mention, its easy to crack plastic trim with a metal screw driver.

    • @TheyMightBeRacing
      @TheyMightBeRacing  10 років тому +2

      You're correct about the tool. I couldn't find mine when I went to install the stereo. And no, I didn't nick the dash, it was a temporary compression.

    I also have a 2002 Explorer and was wondering what brand of dash adapter you used? I bought a Metra brand for 1995 and up Ford from Best Buy and it's too small. The only other choice they had was for 2004 and up.

    We had to get the transmission rebuilt at 150,000 miles. There were some issues with some transmissions early in the life of these cars, but we didn't have that sort of problem, our just wore out (the valve bodies if I remember correctly).

    I'm planning to put an aftermarket radio in my 2005 Ford explorer, and I'm am a little confused that one part. When you took out the factory 2002 Ford Explorer radio you took out or unplugged the antenna plug and two other harness plugs. But when you put the aftermarket radio in I see you only plug the antenna and one harness plug. What is the other harness plug for and is it important?

      Best trick I've figured out is to stick a business card into the CD slot and then hit eject. It's generally the least destructive method. I learned a long time ago to not use CDs I wanted to keep in the car. Always use burned copies, or preferrably an MP3 player.

      Get the proper panel tool, it has a V in the middle like a snakes tongue but, everything else is smooth and wide. Also you can take a plastic putty knife from the hardware store and insert that between your prying tool and the dash pad. Some of those fords can have some very strong clips. You might have better lucking pulling with your fingers in the air vents while you pry. That way you don't need nearly as much force prying. Do one side at a time.

      It should be basically the same process. Keep in mind that you cannot directly plug a new stereo system into the existing car's wiring harness. You need to create the aftermarket wiring harness (outlined in the previous video) to connect the new stereo to the existing wiring.

    • @SL4Y3R512
      @SL4Y3R512 10 років тому

      TheyMightBeRacing The aftermarket harness only supports the left connector from the stock radios. I want to know what you do with the right connector since the harness doesn't house both connectors. In the video above I saw that you just left it unplugged and tucked it away with all the other wires.

    You say this is the correct way to wire a stereo but you made the wrong kind of solder for the car. You should use a western union style solder, its stronger and allows better current flow. Also, you want the solder to flow into the wire not to flow on top, you lose current the way you soldered. My way you keep the current and get better sound quality due to the simple solder. Sorry I am not trying to be mean just simple corrections to make the job better, other then that, everything else I thought was great.

    • @TheyMightBeRacing
      @TheyMightBeRacing  9 років тому

      The western union splice is a fantastic splice, especially for single wire unions. It is fantastically strong. When you start trying to wind braided wire, particularly foner gauge wire like this, there is a tendency to stretch/snap the thin braids. That's why I didn't use a linesman's splice.

    What an amateur. He should have installed a double DIN stereo receiver instead of a single DIN unit instead of having to use that cheap looking plastic adapter. Plus he put an indentation in the vinyl using a metal screw driver. I own a 2002 Ford Explorer and installed a Kenwood DNX691HD Navigation With DVD, Sirius XM, USB, Bluetooth, HDMI and MHL receiver with a Kenwood KAC-8406 4 channel amp and Kicker 41KS684 door speakers.
