Sorry about the wall of text coming up, but here we go: the drummer Larnell Lewis learned the whole set on a 7 hour flight to Amsterdam where this was recorded. There's a video on Drumeo's channel where he shows how he learns songs so quickly. The trumpet player does use a wah pedal, I think one of the sax players also uses it in some songs. The bassist Michael League is the main composer/aranger, but each soloist comes up with their own solos, sometimes improvised on the spot, sometimes rehearsed. The keyboard player losing his mind over Cory Henry's solo is Shawn Martin (dude has 5 grammys, all I'm gonna say about that). The snare with the cymbal on it is called a "stack", he plays it on "We like it here", "Shofukan" and other songs form this particular session. The string section also plays a big part in those mentioned songs. Again sorry about the crazy fan writning a fuckin novel in your comment section, I'm sure you'll get even more of these... xD

Rimshots are when you hit the snare drum as you normally would, but on an angle that catches the rim. If you do it right it sounds more like a sharp crack than a regular hit. What Larnell’s doing there is called cross sticking.

If you look closely, he actually has 3 snare drums in this video; one on his left with an FX cymbal on it for a stacked cymbal effect; his primary in front of him and on his right he has a 14 x 7 snare drum tuned low in the high floor tom position, that he plays with the snares off most of the time and on when he needs a different sound. This was recorded in Holland. Good reaction.
The drummer played the splash cymbal sitting on the floor tom right at the beginning of the track, if you want to hear what it sounds like. Also, a rimshot is when you hit the rim and the head at the same time.
Nice fusion, chilling song particularly synths which are my favorites in this song. And when you entered with them bongos, oh my it was hilariously interesting. TY mate to bring this, need to explore Snarky Puppy.

I love that you're calling out the mics and other gear they're using, and noticed things like the effect on the trumpet solo (he's got a wah pedal or something like a flanger on it for sure). This was a combined performance and recording session, and the audience scattered around the space are all wearing headphones so they get the monitor mix instead of just hearing the drums and horns. IMO it's _real_ impressive how well engineered the whole thing is, they did a fantastic job capturing it all. I'm sure this is the studio mix we're hearing here, not the original live monitor feed, but still you can tell it's all there just like it needed to be.
Very impressive! But yeah I have the same feeling that this is a studio mix just because of how great it is, though I'm sure the live mix sounded amazing as well
Part of the reason why the engineering is a good job is that the location they were invited to was done by Colin Benders, who got quite famous here in The Netherlands for his The Kyteman Orchestra project (check out the live version of Sorry for some goosebumps) and is currently growing quite big as a DJ doing live modular sets under his own name. He invited them there in Utrecht to do the recording and him having a big part in the setup definitely helps in how it turned out. Btw, you see him clapping and jumping in the background with the engineers during Cory's solo which is so cool to see other musicians being so hyped up by each other.
Nice reaction man!! This is an excellent group of master musicians. Their catalog is deep. Another group you might like is Dirty Loops. Again, post-grad trained musicians. Try”Next To You”. I guarantee you will like it!!

Not your fault…but when you noticed that Cory was playing his solo in two octaves, you have NO idea how difficult that actually is for any keyboardist! Cory is a freak of nature on them keys! But great reaction nonetheless brotha 🤙🏽
Yes - finally someone talks about that. SO hard to pull off and so incredible by Corey. At first I thought it was just a double octave "sound" on his top keyboard, but when the camera pulls away, you realize just how amazing what he's doing is.
Considering your hands mirror eachother and aren't the same on both sides, playing in unison over two octaves with both hands is stupid difficult. Corey is a freak of nature. So freaking talented.

I play a couple of classical pieces that have parts like that and it's difficult even though it's prewritten and the particular fingering has been drilled over and over again. Doing that at speed on two different keyboards in an improvised way is pretty nuts. Cory is a beast among beasts
