But the thing is, you would have to own a 3d printer and those things are expensive. It would be less expensive to just read the key itself, and take one of those $1 keys and just make your own. Then at that point you have your own real key not just a plastic thing you get questions about.

yep, after watching many video's i decided to get into lock picking. A coworker gave me his cheap set, I was able to unlock 3 4-pin locks at work ( just locks we use for lock-out tag-out, and my locker lock) and that was it. a couple weeks later a friend had driven back into town to get the rest of her stuff out of her apartment. when she got there she realized she forgot her key. Instead of driving for a couple hours to get it I decided to try and pick it, with extremely novice skills. I had her deadbolt unlocked in 20 seconds. Had to pick it again to lock it and it only took 10 seconds. Sad how easy it was lol.
I've been a locksmith for 16 years. most standard keys are easily sight read(meaning I don't need to run any special program). I constantly warn people on my Facebook friends list not to post pictures of their keys when purchasing a new car or house or anything. someone with experience can read the key and hand file a working key within seconds with nothing more than a file and a blank.

But then, using his method, I found a safe in a dumpster and someone had broken the key off in it. I fished the half key out and traced it on a thin piece of metal and used a Dremel to cut the metal, duplicate the key, and got the safe open.. Sadly, there was nothing in it but I use that safe now and the key that I made for it works perfectly.

Yeeeeep. Pretty sure some official has a cellphone with one preexisting contact that he just needs to call- not say anything, just call- to have some burly gentlemen breach the little establishment of theirs.
I have done a similar thing in the past by printing out a 1:1 scale photo of a key, cutting it out and gluing it to the pre-cut key and cutting out the pin grooves with a dremel... and it worked. Also I am pretty good at lockpicking :p
Here's the neat thing about keys. They use standardized positions for everything. There are specific places the teeth have to be, and only 7 or 8 heights the teeth can come in (for most brands). So theoretically you could just make a CAD file that has all the different heights for each tooth on different layers. You look at a picture and you could pretty reliably guess what position. I know locksmiths who can code and duplicate a key by sight. Imagine looking at a key and just thinking "Thats a five pin schlage 53462." And just going back to your cutter, getting out your guide keys, and cutting one. Like that would 100% be a spy skill.
another "problem" imo, of the kwikset (and to a lesser degree, the schlage) is that theres also the random chance that someone will have the same key by dumb luck. the kw1 has 6 depth steps (some of the newer "high security" have a 7th) and 5 pins, which is 6 to the 5th power, or 46, 656 possible combinations, however there is also a maximum adjacent step parameter. meaning a #6 next to a #1 would not work, as the pin would not be able to bump up the step and would jam the key in the lock (or out of the lock) without my manual in front of me, i think it is a max of 3, witch also considerably cuts down on the possible combinations (im not doing that math on that one) but even at 46k combinations, when you consider that there are MILLIONS of them out in the wild, thats a lot of locks with the exact same key. i custom pin and key my own locks to non-standard steps, so NO ONE has that same key by accident.
i'm sure a thief will stand there an try 10k+ key's to get into your house >< So long as there is a decent total number of possible combination's it really isn't much of a security issue. Considering how well bump key's work, or raking on most cheap locks...that's a far bigger concern
youd be surprised. i have a ring of about 100 for lockouts and can open a lock about 40% of the time. bumping and raking are easily mitigated with a few spool pins.
the simplest step you can take, apart from rekeying your locks, is to just have a restricted profile installed. C4 profile keysways are much larger than needed to fit a pick gun into, along with Gainsborough and Schlage. 3 or 4 clicks is usually all it takes me. get a cheap restricted profile from a locksmith and you can stay reassured that much less people will have access to those profile keyblanks, and even fewer will know what profile keyway they're looking at.
That's pretty cool, I've learned working in hardware stores that I come across 2 of the the same or similar keys at least once a week, if you keep your miss cuts it's really cool to hang on too and see how many times you've cut the same key!
Just a little info (as someone who does a little locksmithing in my job)- 1. It is not the ridges, but actually the groves on the blade of key that work the pins and are important 2. How much tolerance you can work with in the groves is highly subjective to the lock and model 3. If you were to file down a key by hand, based on a photo, you would have little or no chance of actually having it work.
You can start a car with that but it won't drive since all modern cars have a chip in it programmed to your specific car. Without that chip you're not going anywhere
most cars since 1999 have transponders in the key head that works on the same principle as an immobiliser. motorcycles also will have a transponder above a certain engine size. you'll still be able to unlock the doors and boot, but you won't be able to start the car for very long. you can however disable the steering lock and roll it away in neutral.
You'd still need to figure out how to add the anti-theft resistor and one that has the right value. Tilting a key in the light, and you'll see a dimple in the stamping and would need to probe on opposite sides there.
Anya! Honestly, their advice isn't that good. You could make keys from photos long before 3D printers were available, you just need to know how to decode the bitting (way simpler than it sounds). Despite that I still love this channel and I'd recommend it to basically everybody, if only so they take security more seriously.
Martin Hofmann you could just make a new plastic copy of your car key with a picture then turn around and have a new car key re cut without the original keys, But lock smiths can get you blue prints for free on cars and that's just going a little far unless you've got a picture of your keys and a 3D printer on hand then it'd be a total life saver, I'd take pictures of all my keys
I don't own a 3D printer. I had expected the green key to fit a lot better than it did. It looks terrible on the close-up at 14:18. Is it because it's a cheap, not very good printer or is it due to the printing material that was used? What type of material is best for keys if you want the key to be a little more rigid than that green key, but also as break-resistant as possible? What was that gray key made of, it looks much more detailed and the material looks stronger.
We did. It curled right up 3 times in a row. Since this was our home 3d printer and we had just moved it, we were like "screw it. Make a giant raft and let's go have lunch."
Oh decadent life, so full of nylon. I think lack of horizontal compensation was a major issue of that print. Underdeveloped proprietary slicers are a menace.
OMG i totally missed that it was Simplify3D, i see DaVinci, i think their crapware :P But it is Simplify3D, it totally is! Thanks for pointing it out. Yeah it can do anything.
I have duplicated keys from photos working as a locksmith as I'm sure most locksmiths have. There are a few things that they can do here that can make this easier for non-locksmiths. Using a key decoder will help to get the key just right. Also, you don't need a 3d printer to pull this off, so don't think you have to be high tech to do this. This can be done with a sheet of plastic via plastic bottle.

I did this with a Mp Maker Plus ages ago without anywhere near the trouble these guys had. Pro Tip: don't use a raft. It just makes life a pain. Also, if you have access to a key cutter and you want to make a key that won't show up on a metal detector, print a blank and cut it in the key cutter. Its 100% accurate, and you shouldn't need to fiddle with anything once you get to the lock.

Most key cutting is done by eye. You have the original key beside your key to be cut and visually reference it. You could cut a key without an original if you are good at cutting keys and can remember the notch pattern. An old guy who does the key cutting at my local lumber and hardware store looks at a key once or twice and cuts it. He’s amazing.
3d printers, unlike CNC printers, don't have a function called 'track offset'. This means that while it's printing, it doesn't account for the fact that your nozzle has a diameter (typically 0.4mm), and that would mean that while printing the perimeter, HALF of the nozzle's diameter's worth of material lands outside the line. This amount differs depending on what your layer height was and other parameters, but in general I find that if you were to design your object such that all edges are shrunk by about 0.2mm, it works just fine - you end up with a slightly loose fit. If you need a press fit, you might want to cut that figure in half. That being said for all the R&D work poured into 3d printing I'm surprised no slicer I've come across actually has the track offset function. 3d printers are actually able to print at 0.1mm (or smaller?) accuraccy, just that how sharp your corners can be depend on your nozzle size.
Not the best idea. The mechanical load on a bump key is pretty high. But maybe worth trying just to see how likely it is to break a well-printed bump key.
As an amateur locksmith I have found the Kwikset locks to be easy to get open. Making a bump key will most likely open 80% or more of Kwiksets in jest a few seconds.
@@TheSecretman82 The point is this is worse than a gun if you have the time to scout someones habits and value. 3D printed guns are far from being largely used by petty thugs. I'd much rather you have a 1 shot pistol than the key to my house.
I will tell you as someone who used to make keys for their living, I'm going to look at you like the criminal you probably are if you come in and buy a blank key from my shop and don't have me cut it... ..luckily Amazon isn't as judgmental. (Though you're going to need to buy a whole box of them there.) We had to keep the keys behind the counter and there were some keys we weren't allowed to duplicate. I did all the keys for the local police cruisers one day though, so if I were more criminally minded I could have potentially caused trouble. Now you can get keys cut just about anywhere (though I've had SO MANY bad copies done at the places like Walmart that only nominally train people how to do it) ..or the opposite end of the spectrum and it's a transponder key that costs an arm and a leg for no good reason.
No, look up tubular lockpicks. Most of them are actually easier to pick because they rely on the shape to help guard them, rather then making the pins better. There's actually some of them that can be picked with a Bic pen because of the way they're laid out.

The master key for my dad's work was thinner than the keys for the apartment complex, it also weirdly lined up perfectly with the pins. This meant we could open almost every apartment in the complex...
My step dad is s locksmith and has made keys by just looking at the key laying on the seat or in the ignition (mostly older vehicles with separate door and ignition keys). Cheap kwikset locks, if I remember right, only have 5 different lengths of pins. He can also make a key just by inserting a blank wiggling it back and forth then filing where the marks are left on the key.

16:35 "The time he got stabbed" story time please.
oh, wow... this predates anything on UA-cam. This was 6 months before I launched "Brian Brushwood on the Road": www.shwood.com/emails/0602.html
I was expecting a fight with some thugs in a dark alley saving a lady in distress (or Jason), but thats cool too :D
The Modern Rogue should've just said knife fight, but that's cool too I guess.
I would have liked a visual warning before you showed those pictures 😅

another "problem" imo, of the kwikset (and to a lesser degree, the schlage) is that theres also the random chance that someone will have the same key by dumb luck. the kw1 has 6 depth steps (some of the newer "high security" have a 7th) and 5 pins, which is 6 to the 5th power, or 46, 656 possible combinations, however there is also a maximum adjacent step parameter. meaning a #6 next to a #1 would not work, as the pin would not be able to bump up the step and would jam the key in the lock (or out of the lock) without my manual in front of me, i think it is a max of 3, witch also considerably cuts down on the possible combinations (im not doing that math on that one) but even at 46k combinations, when you consider that there are MILLIONS of them out in the wild, thats a lot of locks with the exact same key. i custom pin and key my own locks to non-standard steps, so NO ONE has that same key by accident.
i'm sure a thief will stand there an try 10k+ key's to get into your house >< So long as there is a decent total number of possible combination's it really isn't much of a security issue.
What he said ^

That's pretty cool, I've learned working in hardware stores that I come across 2 of the the same or similar keys at least once a week, if you keep your miss cuts it's really cool to hang on too and see how many times you've cut the same key!

Just a little info (as someone who does a little locksmithing in my job)-
1. It is not the ridges, but actually the groves on the blade of key that work the pins and are important
2. How much tolerance you can work with in the groves is highly subjective to the lock and model
3. If you were to file down a key by hand, based on a photo, you would have little or no chance of actually having it work.
3d printing car keys and trying to drive ????
Car keys have electronics in them.
mine has a chip that wont turn on the car unless its my specific key

Nothing against bill but you have to invite deviant ollam

Anya! Honestly, their advice isn't that good. You could make keys from photos long before 3D printers were available, you just need to know how to decode the bitting (way simpler than it sounds).
Despite that I still love this channel and I'd recommend it to basically everybody, if only so they take security more seriously.
Anya! the best defense is to know how its done lol
Anya! Too late MWAHAHAHA! Jk
I love swearing to "go" 😂
What about 3D printing a key as a template to file down a key blank made out of metal
Martin Hofmann or take it to someplace like a Walmart that has one of those self service duplicate key vending machines at their entrance?
Martin Hofmann you could just make a new plastic copy of your car key with a picture then turn around and have a new car key re cut without the original keys,
But lock smiths can get you blue prints for free on cars and that's just going a little far unless you've got a picture of your keys and a 3D printer on hand then it'd be a total life saver, I'd take pictures of all my keys
or you know... normal printing... (though that's admittedly less fun)
I've heard of people doing this.
The 'magician hands' edit was great 10/10
For some reason I thought the title said "Duplicating a Key form a Potato" so I clicked it.
Why not print it without support material? Worked better for me.
We did. It curled right up 3 times in a row. Since this was our home 3d printer and we had just moved it, we were like "screw it. Make a giant raft and let's go have lunch."
Makes sense. Should also mention that I used nylon instead of PLA, maybe that did the difference (all I had on hand).
Oh decadent life, so full of nylon.
I think lack of horizontal compensation was a major issue of that print. Underdeveloped proprietary slicers are a menace.
Ya that would make sense
OMG i totally missed that it was Simplify3D, i see DaVinci, i think their crapware :P But it is Simplify3D, it totally is! Thanks for pointing it out. Yeah it can do anything.
This is terrifying
I love how the guy opens his knife trying to act cool but he isn’t even noticed.
I followed this tutorial and still I cant unlock my prison cell door
Next up on The Modern Rogue: Totally not a tutorial on how to build a nuclear bomb from items purchased at Walmart!
To be fair. Someone using a CAD program to replicate a key for nefarious reasons are probably not above using a... key generator
Heh.
or just making a bump key...
You completely missed the joke.

"are there any cheaper options than CAD?"
ugh.. CAD isn't a particular piece of software
He’s amazing.
you realy are going to have to use a cnc cutter now to see if you can replicate a key with sheet metal. also make the imfamous 3d printed firearm
"imfamous"
I love the practise locks set up but please explain why the hell its £120
Xylem Force profit
What if you 3D printed a bump key?
Not the best idea. The mechanical load on a bump key is pretty high. But maybe worth trying just to see how likely it is to break a well-printed bump key.
nylon would be perfect for that though
terrible idea that would never withstand the force that it would receive it would need to work.
Even though that might break I'm just curious
Wait, those are the two guys from Hacking the System!
As an amateur locksmith I have found the Kwikset locks to be easy to get open. Making a bump key will most likely open 80% or more of Kwiksets in jest a few seconds.
yeah and people are afraid others can 3d print a gun *lol*
You can. Easily. Already been done, actually.
The military uses 3d printed guns
BirdieGG no they fucking don’t, they use H&K M416s
@@dalejohnson1266 damn rotc niggas raging up in here
@@TheSecretman82 The point is this is worse than a gun if you have the time to scout someones habits and value. 3D printed guns are far from being largely used by petty thugs. I'd much rather you have a 1 shot pistol than the key to my house.
How to get the plastic out of the lock when it snaps?
melt another piece of plastic onto it then pull it out
that was a bugger. We had to heat up the lock to soften the key to get it out.
use heat to melt out. they said it in the video.
I'm really curious... Did you guys just try using pliers? I feel like that would have worked if you'd have figured out that the key was twisted.
PLA melts at a low temp. My guess that's what he used.
So just heat it.
Or you could record with your phone, then capture a frame or multiple frames for reference.
its takes less time to just pick the lock
But its not subtle bystanders will be none the wiser with a fake key
Nitro_Dubs An actual key makes it look like you're supposed to be there though.
Aren't some locks prettymuch un-pickable ?
Like the ones that use these cylinder-shaped keys instead of normal keys.
Those locks are actually *easier* to pick, they just require a slightly different method. Just look up the tutorials here on YT.
No, look up tubular lockpicks. Most of them are actually easier to pick because they rely on the shape to help guard them, rather then making the pins better.
There's actually some of them that can be picked with a Bic pen because of the way they're laid out.
Imagine staying at someones door spending tens of minutes trying to fit and finish a key to fit into their door lock 😂
"Is there any free software you can use." Lmao hes using fusion 360 which is free.
fusion 360 is not free, its £438 per year, you can get a free trial or maybe a student version but the actual version is not free

The reason I claim that you are being a hypocrite, is that you not only discredit the person Ely is replying to and the information they provide, you go as far as to place them as the subject of your ridicule by saying you find "people like (them)" funny under the pretense that they "make things up and pretend (they) know what they're talking about" when in reality according to Autodesk.com and other credible sources, Fusion 360 software falls directly into the ballpark of $495.00 American, although they offer free use for hobbyists and people using it for personal use, the person seems to have actually done some homework in the field, unlike you, because if you had done any research into the subject you would know the difference, instead blindly agreeing with someone, discrediting and even ridiculing another, I'm assuming for no other reason then your need validate your own intelligence or some other emotional or intellectual reassurance, or if I may paraphrase "making something up and pretending like you know what you're talking about".

The master key for my dad's work was thinner than the keys for the apartment complex, it also weirdly lined up perfectly with the pins. This meant we could open almost every apartment in the complex...

Ya
My step dad is s locksmith and has made keys by just looking at the key laying on the seat or in the ignition (mostly older vehicles with separate door and ignition keys). Cheap kwikset locks, if I remember right, only have 5 different lengths of pins. He can also make a key just by inserting a blank wiggling it back and forth then filing where the marks are left on the key.
