Thank you so much for capturing this...as you're probably aware this WAS NOT TAPED according to people I've called at both NYC philharmonic and PBS, etc. It's hard to believe such an amazing performance no longer exists in any professionally videotaped form...what a waste! You wouldn't happen to have the Rhapsody in Blue Gerwshin stuff that was after this do you? Thanks again!!
This is a truly great performance of one of the most significant pieces of 20th century music from any composer (albeit with one horrendously prominent 'horn bloop'; in his main solo, too!). Please can we have some details on what orchestra? who is the conductor? the recording is from where / when? The only comparable performance (and I've consumed many) is Seiji Ozawa conducting the San Francisco Symphony, on an LP that in the 70's I would tote around with me to stereo shops to test speakers. Never failed to blow away the proprietors and the clientele! Haven't seen that one on UA-cam yet, though. Somewhat ironically, the various recordings with Lenny conducting just don't measure up somehow. Similar to the recordings of Stravinsky conducting Le Sacre du Printemps; it's like they can convey the brilliance of their own music when putting it on paper, but somehow not in performance? Of course, both of them recorded fabulous performances of other composers' works.... Enjoy!
Thanks for your comment and insight into this piece. This is also one of my favorite compositions. I updated the description with some information about this performance. Glad you enjoyed.
The ending breaks my heart into a million pieces. This is music. Star-crossed never lovers never sounded so beautiful. ::tears up::

Wonderful orchestra.. Take a look also at Rico Saccani/Budapest Philharmonic video.

yeah, you can't have that note back once it's done on a recording...we're only human and that's what makes performing so exciting
Perché non azzeccano mai la figurazione ritmica del cow bell??
Is the principal horn player Stewart Rose?
Jesse McCormick
Not Phil Myers? He was principal then
