Sivan Magen, harp | Daniel Bard & Itamar Zorman, violin | Katya Polin, viola | Ira Givol, cello | Eyal Ein-Habar, flute | Tibi Cziger, clarinet
Ravel makes better use of 7 musicians than most composers could make of an entire orchestra!
Gabriella Dall'Olio said watching Sivan Magen playing the Ravel was a must. She was totally right! Amazing!
I have heard this many, many times but this recording is sublime - in the sense Edmund Burke sets out. Just wonderful.
+Richard Rathbone Thanks so much! We'll be taking this piece on the road again in a couple of seasons. Hope you might be able to hear us, live!
Such a beautiful piece of music...Ravel had the gift
This piece invites a funny story to my life. I first heard it in about 1978. I was home sick from school and it was played accompanying a test card - that pictorial still shot used in the old days in between programs on TV in the UK. I was transfixed. I recorded it with my little tape recorder and listened over and over again. There was no recognition of classical music in my family - quite the opposite sort of household. The violin spoke to me. So did the harp. The other strings and wind. They seemed to all know each other and I was being invited into their conversation. My appreciation of classical music grew and grew. It shaped my life and the circles I mixed in. The human species is such a complex and automatically diverse species, even from one generation to the next. Independent of siblings and the shared environment. Thank you Ravel.
What a great story! You couldn't have picked a better piece to be introduced to the wonders of chamber music. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
This is my favorite recording of this piece on youtube, using it to get ready for my concerto competition next weeek :3
I first heard this on BBC 2 when it was used for the Introductory music for the short serialised story of Henry James' The Golden bowl' with Daniel Massey,, Katherine Byron, Cyril Cusack, Richard Chamberlainn, and Gayle Hunnicut..I have never forgotten either the programme or the music.
that harpist omg..........wow
A marvelous performance of a magnificent work!
This is an exceptionally lovely & energetic performance! Bravo! It is compositions like this that show Ravel's tremendous talent as a composer.
Yesterday fortunately I had a chance to watch this music.
I can't hide my amazing emotion.
Oh là là, mais que ces musiciens sont bons!!!! que ça fait du bien!!!!! c'est la version que j'ai dans la tête en lisant la partition! Bravo à l'infini!
A stunning rendition of this delicate piece.
I have heard many recordings of this piece, but this one is by far my favorite. I have probably listened to it over 30 times thus far! Thanks for sharing.
We are grateful! Keep listening!
What wonderful, talented young musicians they are; such precision, such feeling. I love Ravel at any time but this is special.
atonishing, incredible fresh and so lively a music, could awake a deadman with love
Rhapsodic music played with insight and elan. Excellent harpist. Bravo!
It really is a showcase for the harp and it's marvelous!
It must've been so amazing to see this live. I felt everything just from watching this video.
A beautiful, fresh performance!
I think this is the best interpretation I've heard of this.
I was not expecting such exemplary audio quality.
Absolutely mesmerizing! Love the genius of Ravel and the performance is awesome.
Great group and great harpist!
Finest performance I've heard of this piece, anytime, anywhere. Harp part particularly breathtakingly good.
Très belle interprétation de cette oeuvre magnifique! Et quels bons musiciens!
Bravo. A delight to listen to and an education to watch. Really very fine indeed.
Superb performance of a wonderful piece.
I've listened to this many times now. It's my favourite performance of the piece - and the excitement of the live performance makes it special.
Ravel himself disliked this and I could never understand why. It is certainly one of the most moving pieces. Compare it with Pavane for a Dead Princess. This is probable one of the best performances I have heard.
Jon boyy hmm don’t think he really disliked it, it was more of he didn’t think it was significant enough a work.
I am in a group performing this very soon and this video is where we draw our inspiration from. Bravo!!
very nice; just one more reason to live in peace for us, all together.
wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this one is the best interpreation I've ever heard... congratulations to all of you :D
Thanks for posting your work...brilliant, georgeous performance!
Beautifully played. It doesn't get much better than this. Bravo!

Incredible!
1941 Christmastime, dark days for Britain indeed. withal, i recall listening to a Life of Christ programme on BBC. this was being played throughout. unforgettable.
I haven't the words to describe what I have just witnessed. Thank you so much. xxx
We are thrilled that you were moved by this. Keep listening!
WHAT IS THE NAME OF THIS GROUP?? This is by far the best version of this I have ever heard - fresh and fiery and full of love. More, more, more!

Great! Amazing! Absolutely perfect!
Brilliant piece!! Good performance.
fantastic
some people can just play that fast ;) like these people.
I love it!
Just Wow
Beautiful. Great recording!
I have heard a lot of versions, but I agree with you here.
Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Chamber Ensemble is also very fine.
Excellent and inspiring
Just amazing!
וואו
excellent
Just perfect. :)
be still my heart
beautiful
I loved the entire thing, but, the gentleman with the harp..he played transfixed..essentially blended into his instrument, and forgot the audience was there, as all great players do at their peak.....
the entire septet played magnificently. some magnificent and beautiful music happened there
Bliss!
the harp is alittle overpowered but that doesnt make the video awful!!!! i like it and the harp always struggles playing with louder instruments like violin. i play harp and they are quite loud but not in competition with violins and cellos
Why are there some parts fast-forwarded? At 01:45, there is such a beautiful part and at the end, you can see it clearly that the video was manipulated afterwards... why?
Seen from the edge, I thought the harp was a tromba marina.
Awful? You are far too critical, first off listening to this with decent headphones or speakers the harp is clearly audible, especially considering that it's unmixed. Second, I have heard countless versions of this piece -including one performed by the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra- and IMO this is the best. I find myself returning often and commend the performers as well as, in ValseInstrumentalist's words the "exemplary audio quality." Please save your negative swill for more deserving targets
i don't get it. it looks fast forwarded, but sounds normal
haha it's not fast-forwarded
I can't hear the harp too well because of the other instruments are too loud ! Sounds like they are competing with each other instead of acompanying the harp. Never heard anything this awful before. This is crazy !!!!
Don't talk crap.
