How to make great, low-profile, quiet patch cables for your pedalboard! (Not affiliated with anyone) You can purchase CA-0678 cable and Squareplugs at btpa.com
Also check out GAC-1 from Gotham Cable. Not braided but shielded with two separate spiral layers wound in opposite directions. Exceptionally soft and flexible. The outer jacket is just _butter._ Beautiful stuff!
I've been using Canare, Mogami and others for three decades. Strangely, I'd never heard of Best-Tronics CA-0678 until just now so I looked up the specs. It does seem to have about half the impedance of Canare GS-4, although at pedalboard lengths, the sonic effects will be negligible (especially if your ears are middle-aged). The CA-0678 center conductor is 74% the size of the GS-4 (24 AWG vs 22 AWG) so it is arguably less durable and higher in resistance. I'll buy some and try it out.
With braided-shield cable (like Canare), if there's limited space on the lug (or within the connector in general) I will often cut away some of the braid so that the twisted bit is a manageable diameter and I'm not trying to jam a log-sized conductor through a tiny hole.
Thanks for the video. What happens if one of the leads touches the inside of the plug housing? Also, what specific tools would you recommend for doing bulk cables (if you could choose any)?
It will short the cable and not pass signal. As for tools, a wire cutter/stripper, an awl, and a soldering iron (plus proper ventilation) are probably the bare basics. I also think helping hands are a must-have because cables are a PITA. Because I also build pedals I have a few other tools (solder reel holder, tip tinner, etc.) but none of those are really must-haves and just conveniences.
Hi, thanks so much - I am looking to splash out on a really good pair of wire cutters/strippers to do bulk TS and TRS patch cables for my rack setup and was interested in whether you had a specific brand or model that you would recommend. I'm using Mogami 2319, 2549 and 2528. Love the aesthetic of your videos, thanks. @@sentientsonicmachines
Unless it's the actual ground/shield lead, right? You could push that back against the housing when you solder it to the left side tab couldn't you?@@sentientsonicmachines
Canare GS-6 and GS-4 both have a braided shield as well as a carbon sleeve.

What a helpful and informative tutorial!
fantastic video - you deserve more views!
thanks for the tips
Speaking of tips, make sure your soldering iron tip is clean and tinned!🙃

"Awl" is pronounced like "all" ;)
Oh I know, I did this entire voiceover in one take haha. I'm learning video editing stuff as I go.
