Count of Monte Cristo is about a man that is falsely imprisoned at a young age, meets a wise man in prison, manages to escape with a thorough plan, assumes a new identity outside, gets rich and gets his revenge. Subtle foreshadowing.

When Heywood hands Andy the Treasure Island book, there's an almost childlike quality his face and the way he does it, like the reverence for Andy's intelligence has put Andy in a role of leader/teacher and Heywood is back to being a kid in school. Another dimension to the good directing/acting in this movie.

You gotta remember too, they all became friends, at the beginning they were all betting on whether Andy would crack on his first day in prison. The beer moment definitely helped win them over but I always loved how Andy became part of the group and how these guys all bonded together. There's safety in numbers and that's especially true in prison, even better when your group all actually like each other so you know they have your back.

Fun fact: During the scene where Brooks describes to the other inmates Andy's first meeting with a guard to set up a savings plan to pay for college education for a guard's children, Brooks was originally supposed to have described the encounter while using a string of profanity. James Whitmore suggested to Frank Darabont to remove the profanities, citing how Brooks, who arrived at Shawshank in 1905, would not have spoken in such a taboo manner on the outside world. Darabont agreed and removed the profanities from the scene.

Well, if the words were unfamiliar to him he wouldn't have known how to pronounce them. But his pronunciation was pretty funny-and Morgan Freeman has a great laugh! The smartest and least embarrassing thing to do would be to ask how an unfamiliar word should be pronounced. He kinda set himself up to be laughed at although I felt a little bad for him. He was trying!

In the book Heywood had a stuttering problem. They don't show it in the movie.

There's a remote coincidence in Shawshank with "2001 A Space Odyssey". Here, one prisoner is named Heywood, another is named Floyd, and the moon mission astronaut in "2001" is named Heywood Floyd. Or maybe the naming was intentional?

And (spoiler alert) Heywood Floyd too escapes HAL's prison. I love this connection!

@@arvindhmani06 No, actually, David Bowman was the Jupiter mission astronaut who disconnected HAL, thereby escaping from him.
