@@jameswells554 Actually, they are the survivors of Nemeds people, a previous group of settlers ( the third group) on the island. Always liked the idea that Nemed was a survivor of Atlantis, especially as a group before them were wiped out by a flood.
As an African American it makes me sad to see what has happened to the culture of the Irish and it also seems alot of people barely even speak the old language there either.
It's still being thought in school and I think it's even class everyone in Ireland has to take in school. Also Gaelic/Irish has risen in popularity over the past decades.

Thanks for shining some light on our mythology, it's a shame that it's so obscure. There's some fantastic stories. Aside from a few of the more popular ones told in schools, people in Ireland wouldn't even know much about unless they had an interest in mythology.
I know right? I'm from Canada but my ancestry is from ireland in cork county and a few years ago I decided I'd learn more about my heritage. It's amazing what's there. I'm especially fascinated with Cliodhna but I can't find much about her.
As a kid who largely grew up in Ireland and who is *deeply* passionate about mythology, stuff like this just… breaks my heart. We need to have stuff like this to be more public knowledge, yet at the same time its fragmented nature makes that kinda impossible in certain regards.

There is this good series of science fiction/fantasy books by Kenneth C. Flint based on Celtic mythology. The first book is call "Riders of the Sidhe"
The main character of the series is Lugh. Good read.

I'm American, but I'm second generation Scottish on my mom's side (my grandma is from Glasgow). I always find it very frustrating when I try to learn about my ancestors and their mythology because they never bothered to write any of it down. So I just have to settle for whatever the Romans were...uh... kind enough to write about their enemies. I do remember reading some stories where the beings of Celtic mythology coexist with a christianized Scotland, so I thought that was pretty interesting. I've heard some Europeans still believe in those beings in the same way some Americans believe in ghosts
Scots are Celtic, Irish are Celtic, and the Welsh are Celtic peoples, descendents respectfully. In America they only teach that the Irish are Celtic. I did know about the Scotts being Celtic but, honestly didn't find out about the Welsh until I went to Ireland on a vacation.
@@jev2vulcan726 The Bretons are Celtic, the Cornish are Celtic, the Asturians are Celtic, the Galicians are Celtic, and that's only for people NOW who retain that heritage because frankly if you go back far enough practically all Europe was Celtic at one point.
It's possible that they CHOSE not to write anything down, more than not bothering to. (It sure is annoying for historians.)

I just recently got into the iron druid Chronicles, and celtic mythology is a big part of the series. I highly recommend it, it's an amazing read.

It’s a shame that like Norse Mythology, Celtic mythology has been changed by Christian missionaries trying to convert the locals to monotheism.
Celtic mythology to a far great extent however since it never had a Poetic and Prose Eda to preserve a large portion.
At least thanks to the missionaries some where writing down, but if only they hadn’t messed with it so much
it's unfortunately a reality that we will never know exactly how our ancestors saw the world before Christianity, but at the same time, we should be happy that some priests trying to preserve parts of the old faith, even if it was only for their own gain or not

Ryan: Unfortunately, the Prose and Poetic Eddas were written by Snorri, a Christian scholar. There are, in fact, basically no true Nordic sources of Nordic mythology. There simply is no way of knowing how much of the Eddas is really Nordic or embellished or perhaps complete insertions of Snorri. The best YT channel for Nordic mythology is Dr. Jackson Crawford, who teaches it at the University of Colorado. Boulder.
Oh I knew the Eda's where written by a Christian scholar- hence why there are some noticeable Christian asspects to it. What I meant to imply was Snorri wrote the Eda's because he wanted to keep Norse culture alive. Unfortunately there was no like minded Celtic enthusiast

I love this channel. I'm Slavic and this Celtic mythos reminds me of our ancient Slavic history. The druids, people of the mounds and of course Mother Goddess worship.
In my eyes Christians won the war and so they changed the way history flows. Even when it comes to the Bible there are suspicions about it being edited. Slavic derived from slave in English, but in Polish it's derived from Word as SŁOWO. It is said that the word came first.
Our king Chrobry which basically means Tough Guy was poisoned while taking the communion and his successor is called Mieszko which basically means Money and of course he is the king that introduced Christianity to our land (Dagome Index or Iudex is the document about this, if anybody is able to decipher). Now I don't blame anybody as the lost war stems from the weakness, but we were robbed from our culture, traditions and history. Now we have Jesus cult followers in Poland who can't accept the simple thought of anything being different. Now it might all seem as a stretch, but you would have to understand the ancient Slavic language to get what I'm talking about and there a lot of questions still.|
Also surprising how Bloodborne game takes on this, even though it's very not in your face way. If anyone has played Kingdoms of Amalur, they reference a lot of Celtic, Greek and Norse mythologies with their bestiary, enemies, and bosses. Even uses some of their weapons and armor.
I think they were talking about Mari being their Goddess. I kinda get this vibe because the name "The tuatha de danann". And knowing the realtions between the Basque people and the Irish. I think The Tuatha were a anceint tribe of the Danube river.
A goddess of the same, Danu in Indo-European mythology is a river goddess. She probably had something to do with lakes or rivers.

Ser Ten of House Goodman Dresden Files isn't the Tuatha Dé Danann, it is Fairy (think along the lines of Shakespeare). The Iron Druid Chronicles is about Druids and the Tuatha Dé Danann Pantheon; as well as the Greek, the Roman, the Norse and even the American Pantheons of gods.
@@SmileItsRome Yeah primarily Dresden ends up dealing with the Fey and Christian mythologies, but he's run across a fair number from others as well. And the Fomor are there too now.
@@MrAshCarr Also has a bit of Greek mythos too, with the Valkyrie and Donar Vadderung, who is supposed to be Odin.

I think it is worth pointing out that the concept f a Celtic people is a modern idea, applied to various people groups whose ethnolinguistic origin were the same.
The reason why it's important to point out this difference is that Celtic peoples spread all across Western and Central Europe, not just the British Isles. The Celts of the Isles were the Insular Celts, as opposed to the Continental Celts, whose mythology and language diverged substantially by the time of the rise of Rome a millennium later.
Furthermore, the Insular Celts of the Isles can be divided into the Britons (of Britain) and the Gaels (originally of Ireland, later also of Northwestern Scotland).
To put it mildly, the Gaels and the Britons did not like each other. So to see them as the same makes about as much sense as seeing Portugal and Spain as the same.
Later on the Gaels invaded Scotland and the Anglo-Saxon invaded England, splitting the Britons into their modern incarnations of Wales and Cornwall (though at the time there were still substantial Britonnic populations up in Northern England and in Western Scotland.
My point? This "Celtic" mythology is really just Gaelic mythology.

Anyone interested in the Tuatha de Danann should also research the Tuadhé Anu of Scythia, which connects them to the Anunna gods of the Persian gulf (Anunnaki). Then I highly recommend people go learn about the Finnish Väinämöinen mythology and see what you notice. The Mesoamerican gods can also draw specific parallels to these more northern stories. What I'm getting at is that the lost civilization of the ice age that Graham Hancock and many others allude to, are all hidden in mythology and folklore. We are quite literally talking about caucasians whether its Quetzlcoatl of the Maya, Enki-Ea of Sumer/Babylon, or Fionn Mac Cumail of Ireland, which literally translates to White Stranger. This is our lost history, shrouded in fiction.

My grandad on my mother´s side used to class his grandchildren according to their most prominent tribal characteristics. The broadest brushes were Fir Bolg, Tuatha Dé Danann and Milesian. Although Balor was Lugh´s grandfather no one was ascribed descent from the Fomorians.

Some in accuracies in this bit the biggest one was Danu cited as Goddess of the Earth. That's not true. Danu was the Earth as a divine being. Danu was not a humanized God. We are talking about a animistic theology where land masses were considered divine beings. Ireland itself is considered a goddess.

I am exploring this mythology. As I believe it served as a model for (Elden Ring)'s
mythologies and other sources. Japanese works actually quite have them even though not much in anime but at least in light novels and mangas tho I can't give some sauce but they do, Japanese writers love reading other mythos and incorporating some of their Indo-Chinese beliefs in the artistic symbolisms and inspirations in their works
