Imagine if Fionn teamed up with Cú Chulainn, they would be unstoppable
Smt v brought me here
Oh boy I've got a game for you.
I can stop that
Depends.. does Fionn's possible wife get a look at Cu?
It could have happened of his fianna predecessor didn't kill his father first.
"I do bite my thumb but not at you"
Its so nostalgic to hear all these Irish Myths and legends explained. Really reminds me of my Childhood and hearing these stories from my parents and relatives. Excellent work as always!
I always heard about them from school but its still nostalgic
In Irish mythology the earliest humans in Ireland 'were' giants - it needs no distinction. Size plays a very important role in mythology as it symbolizes power, and the imbalance thereof. Something huge is considered mighty, with the expectation that it is more powerful than anything smaller; so when a hero of roughly human size comes along and defeats it, it helps to emphasize how extremely powerful that hero must be. The reason the ancestors were portrayed as giants themselves was to emphasize how much mightier they were than later humans - who were also less directly connected with the spiritual world. But they are all considered successive generations of humans.
For some reason the most interesting detail is of Fin having to bite his thumb for the world’s knowledge since I have seen so many people (even myself) do that in real life as just a thing that some people do.i just find it amazing that a simple gesture like that is that ancient and seemingly ingrained to our very instinct to just do that.gives me an amusing thought anyone who does do that regularly might be a secret descendant of Fin.
He didn't just bite his thumb, he chewed it to the bone marrow. presumably the thumb healed itself afterwards but it appears in myth that he chewed the skin off his thumb, then chewed the flesh off then gnawed on the bone until he got to the marrow inside, then he learned what he needed to know. It sounds like a ritual sacrifice.
@@Catubrannos Thats hardcore
Or finn is just trying to activate his titan transformation
@@theomega7699 Celtic mythos is all hardcore.
thank you Fionn, very cool
no bother!
I sense a theme with Celtic mythology. The one about him going to sleep and arising when Ireland is in it's greatest need is very reminiscent of Authorial myth saying the same (when Author will return during England's greatest need).
True, there are similarities between the tales...BUT ALWAYS REMEMBER, the Irish did it first! lol!
Arthurian* Arthur*
Geribaldi's Games Arthurian myth is post-Roman, and most older English myth is now forgotten. Irish mythology is older, as the Romans never got here.
TRiG (Ireland)
But Christianity did, and they murked it up real good.
Geribaldi's Games Some say that time is now. The spirit of those ancient genetic stock need to free themselves from the EU, fake media and the Jihad on your doorsteps.
Finn the human is that you?
im pretty sure he was based of this character, i mean renamed Finn Mcool to Finn Mertons, both have long blonde hair, orphaned and raised by warriors, plus hes a badass warrior who is seen in the company of golden dogs! Coincidence! i think not. Pendelton Ward has some celtic folklore under his belt.
Riccardo Sindoni
Yeah, those are strong enough ‘connections’
I always hear Fionn pronounced fuh-yun but one syllable like Fjun. Great video btw
Yeah, I think TES just mispronounced it
You are right - he can be called Finn (like Fin) or Fionn (like Fuh-yun) - not Fee-ann that the reader here is saying
If you ever come to see the Giant's Causeway check out the statue of Manannan Mac Lir the sea god that's nearby, it's very pretty.
"Salmon of knowledge"
Omega three fish oil.
Love irish mythology
when you see an O' Reilly commercial on a Celtic Mythology video
when i was a kid i was told that when finneagas heard that fionn ate the salmon he let him eat the rest not because fionn was meant to eat it, but because finneagas was so depressed/distraught that his years of work had amounted to nothing, thus making him lose his appetite
Its 3 am and im sleeping in a tent with my friends bored out of my mind thanks for the entertaining vid :)
Though i would check this out because he popped up in my family history I really wanted to learn more about him this video really helped thank you.
interesting. mine too. they say i’m descended from him
This is cool I live a few miles from the giant's causeway, we hear that tale all the time but not a lot more about the man himself
Thank you.
Also Samhain (Halloween) is coming up soon so this is extra cool that I'm watching this in October
I was born on Halloween ❤️ and I'm Irish ❤
Love your videos, i would really appreciate it if you could make an "exploring the SCP/Foundaition series".
There's a book series called Junkyard Druid that features the descendant of Fionn Mac Cumhaill, he has the curse of Cu Chulainn and another series i read has alot of irish mythology called the Iron Druid series, its actually my favorite, you should check it out
Thank you!
Brilliant!! 👏
Lovely video.
I always heard Fionn rested his forehead upon his upright spear with the tip pressed into his skin so that each time he began to fall asleep it would pierce him and force him awake.
I read about Fin McCool in the early 80’s and then again Slaine the Barbarian which was a bit odd at the time for a fellow in Cape Town South Africa.
Fionn Mac Cumhaill and Cú Chulainn are probably the two biggest names in Irish mythology.
Tristan O Could be. He ran off with Fionn's daughter (or, rather, she ran off with him). My main source is Rosemary Sutcliffe's book The High Deeds of Finn McCool and my half-remembered Irish mythology lessons from primary school.
@@qwertyTRiG She wasn't fionn's daughter, she was meant to marry fionn
@@billnicks2362 Huh. I knew that. Must have been having some strange brainfart. Sorry.
Very nice video. I guess this is why we use the word "Cool" today ;-). Such a badass ;-).
😭😭😭😭
This video is so cool!!!!
You should cover the Hyborian Age
Ah yes, a time before the oceans drank Atlantis...
@@robertschiek8120 That's the Thurian Age.
Finn McCool. Got my new character name.
I feel like I'm being attacked
Is this narrated directly from the Wiki page on Finn / Fionn McCool ?? Loved the Eddie Lenihan telling of irish myths and legends , the books and tapes, in my boyhood days !!
I am always spooked by fionn
Is he that bad in FGO?
FGO?

Go raibh maith agat for sharing your take on this legend good sir.⚔️🌅🍀
Mannann mac Lir next? Or Nuada and Lugh? 😊
Mitch McGinn Yep. I also like "Tyr na N'og"
According to the reconstructed irish myth, Nuadha and Neachdaine are the same and are the equivalent to Apollo.
Cool vid😂
Well told story of a Fion.
imagine spending your entire life looking for a magic fish, just for your student to get its powers instead, and you're still chill enough to go "it's cool, you can have the rest of it"
Theres a podcast called Candlelit Tales I would highly highly recommend it to anyone interested in our rich mythology.
They do an outstanding job retelling Celtic folk stories. they dont just tell the stories they breathe life into them actually get you emotionally invested.
(I know that sounds like a shill but I have no affiliation and literally nothing to gain it's just a recommendation)
Then theres Eddie Lenihan who will give you the run down on our traditions, stories about the Fairies folk tales and yarns he has spent his life collecting travelling from town to town and interviewing people.
his story telling is hypnotic and hes the closest thing we have to a living practising Seannachaí
Okay that church glass mirror like art is phenomenal who is the artist??
Will you ever do a video on Math Mathonwy?

That was rather....cool.
....we're all seeing the Adventure Time connection here, right?
Wolvenfire86 Connection to WWE’s Finn Balor as well.
What is the connection
Any book suggestions where I can learn Irish or Celtic mythology?
I apologize for taking this long to subscribe though I've been enjoying your videos for about a year now. Even commenting on a few. Forgive me, I have no excuse. Keep it up !!!! Perhaps you can do a series based on the Disney and fairytale classics. Snow white, pinochio, Hansel and gretel, little red riding hood etc.. just a thought
Another story could be Deirdre of the sorrows
The story of Midir and Etain
Niamh and Oisin, Oilsin?
Anyone know what the ulster dialect version of Finn McCool is?
have you done Balor of the evil eye?
Lion Giacomini He was mentioned in video about Chu Chullean
That has got to be the manliest name ever.
Ikr? I picture a tough guy in a shady bar, beating the fuck out some scumbag. 😂✊
Damn right it is
Nah, it's Mannish Man the Minotaur
Cool.... 😁
I just finished Finn Mac Cool by Morgan Llewellyn, such a sad ending.
I wonder if the salmon of knowledge was smart enough to know it was going to get eaten.
Hit the watch button so hard I almost cracked my phone screen!
Funny thing is, my mother's maiden name is McCool and from Ireland. This guy may be an ancestor
This is my step-dad's ancestor!
Its in his name to be Cool
Fionn Mac Cool
Link xD
That's a pretty MacCool guy.
So I know ireland is rewferenced a lot in these. But "Celtic" applies to the entire British isles, doesn't it? So would these myths have been present in among the Briton/British?

I thought it was chicken rock he made not the Isle of Man?
No, it was the island he made
k so Fionn vs Chulainn- who wins?
Do you mean Cúchulainn? If so, Fionn did according to the stories. The story of Fionn dressing as a baby is also brought up regarding Cúchulainn

Was this King of Ireland Brian Baru?
Thank you
Fionn the Human.
No, please stop....
Ahh i wonder if Mac from the dresdenfiles is fionn.
chickenmonger123 it's been so long since a Dresden book has been published in not entirely sure who "Mac" is off the top of my head. The bar owner?
He is finn from adventure time
There are elements similar to the story of King Arthur.
What elements are similar ? Theres no similarities at all tbh.
Because their lives were in danger, they were raised incognito, by foster parents.
They both trained under druids.
In the case of Arthur, Merlin.
In the case of Fionn, Finnegas.
Both lead groups of warriors as adults.
In the case of Arthur, The Knights of the Round Table.
In the case of Fionn, The Fianna.
I may have overstated, but it is clear that some elements from the Fenian Cycle have found their way into the Legends of King Arthur.
What you just described are called story tropes they are found in all stories . Theres no similarities at all as far as the characters go. king Arthur is a Norman legend most likely brought from france to Parts of England and wales in the 12th century . king Arthur despite its popularity is a pretty uninspired generic story ,comparing it to the brilliant weirdness of irish mythology or the cattle raid of Cooley is actually insulting .
I have not thought of tropes being used in mythologies before. I find it fascinating. I’m going to ignore you now.
@@thenextshenanigantownandth4393 Actually, king arthur features in both Irish and Welsh tales long before it got to france or england.
Oh that explains why fion sucks his thumb in fgo
seems legit.

You're correct it's Fyunn

After some research, tonight I found out that my last name is the anglicization of Mac Cumhaill. So basically I'm a demigod.
I stand by OSP in saying that he was just called Blondie bc he was hiding his name
wait so is he a demigod or a human?
Biting his thumb gave him knowledge? I know someone who turns into a Titan when he does it…
my name, Finbar is a descendent from Fin so many that makes me cool.
Hi🙋. That's gotta be a great feeling, having bad ass DNA running thru you? Bad ass ancestor dna protecting you, guiding you.

I think his name is cool either way. Finn McCool or Finn McCumHail. Sieg Cumhail.

@jewLUBEkneegahRsWHINE your fuckin name 😂
@jewLUBEkneegahRsWHINE shit had me dying
Ólaim Fionn gach lá.
It's not Fee-in. It's fyun.
Apparently I am related to him.
Either he was a real character just with exaggerated stories or some Irish scholar back then decided to sneak him in as the grandfather of some Irish king.
Fionn rhymes with young
Was he really that jacked and ripped?
Probably. Tough life back then. Mother fuckers had to lift big ass boulders to build shit.
And it wasn't like nowadays, where the adults work and the kids play fortnite. The kids had to lift boulders as well. So the kids were kid buff, ya know?
Punk ass kids nowadays. Weak fucks with guns. Put them guns down and knuckle up with an Irish kid😂.

I'm at the point were I think that "Myth" means this is really the truth. But we don't want you to know.
