My favorite thing from Scottish mythology is the Scottish werewolf. A wolf headed man that gives fish to the poor.
Andrew Carmichael Yes!! What a pure being!
It's called a wulver I believe. It is also said to be seen grieving outside of homes of those who are going to die.
Finally a positive werewolf of old myth not a modern creation aside from Lupa, the wolf mother of Romulus and Remus.
Interesting that. Possibly more the *Nordic* aspect of their history than Celtic / Gaelic as I have heard of no such creature in Irish myth, plus there is no 'V' (or 'W') letter in Gaelic, only sounds, but not letters as in 'Wulver'. It actually even sounds very Germanic / Norse.
Thanks though for sharing your knowledge.
Slán
The Norse had many lycanthropic references and tales in their equally intriguing mythology.
@@hughmellerick4417 yeah the Wulver was taken from Shetland which was controlled by Norsemen.
"Irish headless horseman that uses a human spine as a whip"
okay that is some metal shit and I am mad that I never heard about it until now
John Cena Official 😂
Right!
Ah yeah but he gets a bad rap, I went on the piss with him and we had some craic in Tramore a few years ago, I had a few shrooms and we had a wild time with some crazy cailíns on the beach.
@@tomasotreasaigh111 Dude, you have to tell us more about this.
Eira same man 🤘🏼 💀
I’m beginning to think that much of Celtic Folklore stems down to: “Fecking fairies, eh?”
Nowadays they just turn on the history channel and blame Aliens
but before tinfoil they used iron and told fairytails
Pretty much the Fay are Connected to the Old Gods
What is a fairy, but a devil with a prettier (most of the time) face?
that going by Christian logic there faith has a over Arching bad guy other faiths may not have that at all Jews don't even have a hell
@@DracoMagnius fair folk were as varied as we are, you have the malicious ones but ones like the Hobs who were benevolent. They just ask that you be polite and leave them some milk or cream. Never be rude to Fair Folk XD
Old Tom is dead? Then I must be king!
Tom from Tom and Jerry is dead?!
@@gigaslayer1058 maybe Tom is actually of unknown Royal blood and like Gengis Khan
Tom is dead, long live Tom.
the rat won
@@newarkarchives he was a mouse
"There are no records of female leprechauns. Perhaps leprechauns just sprout from holes in the ground"
It's the beard.
Or maybe they slept with brownies and the males where leprechaun and females were brownies. I've never heard of male brownies.
Bless you when you sneeze stops the laprechauns carrying you off and if your a female he will plant his gold in your belly... 🌈🍀😄
Idk if the two others got your LotR reference, but I certainly did. Thanks man, had a laugh 😂
I was sifting through the comments just to see if someone will make the reference
Which is just ridiculous!
7:36 actually the tradition of having a wake for the dead came about from people being mistook for being dead and being buried alive. The professional whalers were hired because the tones in their cries were actually able to wake someone who might have been mistaken for being dead, hence the phrase to someone being loud "you'd wake the dead" and hence the tradition of a wake is even called a wake in the first place.
Song of the Sea is a pretty cool animated film set in Ireland and all around Celtic Mythological creatures. Well worth a watch
The animation studio also produced the secret of kellys, which also goes in hard on that folklore, really excellent movie
Love Song of the Sea! I bawled my eyes out after watching it. Great story and beautiful animation.
I’d honestly give both of them a 10/10.
i watched it on netflix
I love this film so much,I went and saw it in the cinema when it first came out when I was 5,I've loved cinema and Celtic mythology ever since
Fun Fact: A changling was often the explanation of a young child acting different after about 2 years old, now known as autism. Sometimes babies had sudden infant death syndrome so people said the fairies took it.
Even though he did mention us in the end I wish videos like this would mention Welsh myths and folklore more often. We have tons of cool and unique creatures in our mythology
Tell it then. Rare to even know where to look for anything Welsh. I was able to order a copy of a dictionary about 20 years ago. The person who ordered it for me said it was the only one in the world; that the language was dying & I should rather spend the money on French or Spanish or Russian. Now I can just watch online vids for free . Still got that dictionary though.
I am a Irish man🍀☘
The Prydain Chronicles are a start....
Can you tell me how I can learn more about it?
Besides the Red Dragon on your flag of course
"Try as he may, run as he might, he who steals me gold won't live through the night...!" - from the Leprechaun horror movie. Really fun.
guy with weed friend indeed leprechaun in tha hood
Changelings have been theorised to be linked with down syndrome. The people would mistake the unusual facial features as meaning a changeling has taken their baby and put a bad replacement in its place. A lot of these "changelings" were unfortunately drowned instead of being reared.
DodgerOfSheep Probably not just Down Syndrome, but any disfiguring condition or syndrome is more likely. It would be far too unlikely for it to be comfortably linked to a single disorder as we u understand them.
Also, it may have been something of a comfort to think of one's child who died in childhood as living on safely with the Sidh.
I mean, it's possible, especially as it wasn't rare for many tribal cultures to "dispose" of infants unlikely to survive. Also, Jesus, can you imagine trying to raise a child with downs syndrome back then? Fuck that, kids a serious liability for the whole tribe
Gromph Baenre Nope. It's named for John Langdon Down, the first doctor to identify it.
They had changeling in swedish folklore too. One way to get your chold back was to do some regular worktask in a strange way, like using an eggshell as a cooking pot. The changling would then stand up and exclaim something like "Half a dozen forests have I seen grow and die, but nothing as stupid as using an eggshell for cooking" He had then showed that he wasn't a child and the real child would been returned. We also have something similare to the kelpie, näcken often a male that was found in rivers and streams. He would play fiddle and
Could lure youngsters on to the water, sometime he took a maiden as wife to live under water. In rare case you could make a deal and he teach you to play fiddle, but there was often a catch you could only play a surtain number of songs in a row. Oftebn he would forget and keep playing and find that he could stop playing and the people couldn't stop dancing until they died of exhaustion.
Surprised there's no mention of the Nuckelavee, the most terrifying mythological monster I've seen.
ZanzaKlaus what is it
Couch gaming news
Creepy horseman thingy
ZanzaKlaus to be fair, that's more Norse than Celtic
It's a demon living in the sea, but also walks on land at time. It is blamed for every kind of disaster; draughts, plagues, sick livestock etc. And people were so scared of it many didn't even dare speak it's name.
It's most iconic for it's appearance; a skinned horse with a skinned human torso growing out of it's back, resembling a rider. It also had yellow veins, which were filled with black blood, which of course were visible for everyone to see, as it didn't have any skin.
ZanzaKlaus Oddly I once did a spur if the moment roleplay with someone online via a chatting service and they played as one of these and I was Mabel from Gravity Falls she had the journal of course, and staying in character, she actually escaped. It was awesome and I was amazed it worked.
In Scotland you have to call the sith 'good folk' coz if they hear you bad-mouthing them it spells trouble for you.
Rats are also referred to as "good folk" here in the Philippines and shouldnt be badmouthed.
@Gruagach. Eire are you claiming sith isnt Scottish Gaelic?
You mean the gentle folk
@@jenniferschmitzer299 Absolutely!! Or Else!!🦉❤x
@Gruagach. Eire it's the scottish version of Sídh
Ah yes, all of the Fae at once.
🖤
In the old days: "We must destroy and burn and kill changelings and magical creatures!"
Today: "Magical creatures are rad, I dont care if i have one as a wife/ friend/ child"
Also today: "Id f**k a magical creature"
It´s so true...
We humans, truly evolved as a species.
Edit:
While animals run away and fear the unknown, humans these days turned into complete Xenophiliacs.
"Hey, dude did you see those xenomorphs from Alien? I would smash that!"
I don't know if I should be intrigued or worried. Please, kind strangers of the internet, comfort me in these troubeling times.
Also today: "I identify as a magical creature"
😶😤🤣🤤
They are fallen angels.. and will steal your soul.. goodluck in hell.
*mentions the loc nes monster* me: *Scooby-doo flashbacks*
"We can look back and begin to understand the things that people believed when they heard cries in the night or when they saw something a little out of the ordinary... Or when they got caught trying to sex up a seal."
Cait Sidhe reminds me that I found out about them via Final Fantasy VII, in the character of Cait Sith. I don't know about the original Japanese name, but the English translation obviously refers to the Celtic myth.
9:14 Nice Gimli reference there!
Can we get Slavic mythology on the next strawpoll?
Sometimes I wonder if people mistook a fox scream in the distance for a banshee wail. If you've ever heard a fox scream, it really does sound reminiscent of a woman screaming or wailing.
Nah,it definitely is a woman wailing
No.. It certainly be the banshees.. Fox doesnt exist..
No. A Banshee was originally just a woman who performed a certain kind of singing as a funerary right. It was common to have a Banshee interpret the grieving of a death through her song. When Christianity came, they didn't like the practice so they demonized the woman and told people that if you hear a Banshee you will die.
@@greenrocket9344 I always knew banshees were real, but I don't know if foxes exist
FUNNY AS A CHILD MY GRANDMOTHER (WHO IS FROM TENNESSEE/ BLACK WOMAN) WOULD ALWAYS TELL US "QUIT ALL THAT SCREAMING LIKE A WILD BANSHEE!!" I ALWAYS WONDERED HOW THIS BECAME A TERM IN THE DEEP SOUTH OF AMERICA. CULTURE CONNECTIONS ARE AN AMAZING THING
Love to go exploring with you every single time! Even re-watching my favorites is fun. So in short, keep making videos and I'll keep watching them lol
I've always loved the fair folk, and especially the kelpie/aughisky.
10:14 - "Try as he may, Try as he might - He who steals me Gold won't live through the night!" fav quote from movie.
Makes me sick, the thought of people burning their own children alive just because their kids were probably learning how to talk early and were making "weird babbling sounds". Ugh...
Thank you for this series my friend
Your videos bring me joy
I've never heard of your channel before and I have no idea why it popped up in my recommended list. But, I find Celtic mythology interesting, so I watched this. You've got a new subscriber. I'm am looking forward to exploring the other videos on your channel.
Awesome video, very interesting!! Thank you for sharing!
3:30 Cat Sith...
You were expecting a joke, but it was I! A meta-joke!
No it wasn't. Get your braindead zoomer shit outta here
Hey man i havent commented for a bit but yeah just wanted to say keep up the great work man love your stuff :)
Always enjoy learning about the origins of Myths.💚💚💚
Love Celtic and Greek Mythologies. Thank you.
Lord of the rings reference at the leprechaun part
@michael browne r/whoosh
@michael browne God damn, you dumb. Read it properly.
Cool to learn Spriggan is Cornish, weather manipulator garden / castle entity famous for channeling storms and sudden whirlwinds. Sometimes described as "ghosts of ancient giants" they are also famous as singers.
When the wind blows real hard around the house it sounds like it's screaming and howling. I couldn't help but imagine what it must have been like for people who lived far out with next to no neighbors. Trying to understand what that sound was. Maybe how ware wolves were thought up? And hearing the leaves hit the ground in autumn sounds like little feet scampering. Maybe I have to much imagination
I freaking love this video!!!!!❤️
“Old Tom is dead? That means I must be king now!”
Ah... So that’s where my cat went when I was 10...
That was fun. Got my sub 🙂
The creatures thought to be leprechauns are often actually beings known as Fir Darrigs, especially, when described wearing a red coat or vest and brandishing a shillelagh. Also, thought I should add about the Banshee, or Bean Sidhe literally means woman of the hill, where it was believed that the fae resided.
I find Celtic mythology interesting mother creatures they're selling you forgot about like the Welsh dragon
I would sort of like to see you make a series on the Mythology of the Steven King universe
On the subject of changelings I recommend the episode of the show Mushishi titled 'Cotton Changeling'
Right on time!
Check out the monuments of the KELPIE HORSES in Scotland, MAJESTIC
Just adding this here to others who wish to see them:

😍🥰
please make a video about Welsh mythical creatures!
Dark girl yes!
I would love to read stories about celtic myths, quite interesting.
There is an episode of Lore (a podcast) on changlings, and it’s one of the best episodes
Catbythetoilet I concur
You, man, are truly a man of culture.
You killed me when you introduced the Bandhee with an old black and white pic of Angelina Jolie 🤣😂
How wonderful! :)
That last quote, I’m sure that’s how they also determined whether one a Witch or not but I assume they did it for all things
Whenever I watch these myth videos I'm always like "that seems super familiar" and then I realize that Shin Megami Tensei has ruined me forever.
There are a species of wild cat in scotland as well. Though they are endangered. There is even mention of a clan who wore hats of cat fur.
Dullahan; inspiration for the Headless Horseman perhaps?
Jovan Mitrić or the headless horseman WAS a dullahan
Um, he is a dullahan...
I would say yes, just inspiration as the headless horseman is a hessian soldier who lost his head from a cannonball. Dullahans would have their head while also carrying a wagon as well and would be warded off by gold, not a specific bridge.
Arthurian legends also has sir gawain fighting a headless horseman
I read in 'the mammoth book of Celtic Myths and Legends' by Peter Ellis that the god Lugh Lamhfada eventually changed into Lugh-chromain and then into Leprechaun.
its a really dodgy etymology. New work has been done on it. Peters work is problematic in places
Very interesting video
Now, I know what was the inspiration for my favorite FF7 character.
@2:20 Fortunately Abhartach's grave has not become the source of legends of having a horde of wealth or William O' Loomis would have already removed the stone!
I know you already did a video on CHIM, but can you make a video exploring more of it, Anu, amaranth, the dreamer or godhead, and what if the godhead wakes up?
The Kelpie is awesome 👌 👏
I'm amazed he didn't say anything about the Scottish Nuckelavee. Probably one of the most terrifying Celtic creatures
Peadar O’guillin (could be wrong) has an awesome book called ‘the call’ that has evil Irish spirits
That quotation at the end is a mistranslation. "It's lay it on a bed of iron" the Fay cannot abide the touch of iron. It is an anathema and causes them great pain. If it is a changeling they will very strongly react. If it was human it would do no harm.
Cool video, especially the Irish vampire, but I was a little disappointed there was no mention of the pooka/puka, the Irish trickster spirit that took the form of a horse or dog
Feel I should mention a few of these creatures that are mentioned as just Scottish or Irish actually exist in folklore for both countries, such as the selkie
One creature of Irish myth I've yet to find more info on are the Oakshees.
An Oakshee is a sort of tree spirit, from what I've heard
sadlobster1 no such creature exists in Irish mythology, as far as I can tell. For a start, its name is an ugly portmanteau of the English word "Oak" (Doire/Daire in Irish) with the anglicised form of "sidh" stuck on the back of it. So "oak fairy" is what... whoever made up this term is trying to say (it seems a very... New Agey, pseudo-Celtic Reconstructionist thing from the pages I saw with mentions of it). Many types of trees were considered magical or holy by the ancient Celts, and there are still fairy trees around the place, that doesn't mean a vengeful Mother Earth animist avatar comes after you (you want Warhammer Age of Sigmar Treekin for that). Cutting down a tree beloved by the síthe would just get them angry with you in general.
not a real thing
Wait, my cat Mr. October (we call him Toby for short) had a small white spot on his chest! Was I bless with having met a fairy!?
That King of Cats Story is funny as fuck
Nice video
Yo....when you described the Cat Sidhe I looked over at my black and white cat with the same markings and go “oh.....ok then-“
2:49 Thought we wouldn't notice, but we did. Ladies & gentlemen: the ending of One piece confirmed.
That thumbnail had my attention.
Nice Tolkien reference 👌
Michael Halligan and the rest! guess it just depends when you are on Rest doing your bit for your country.
Brilliant 💯👍💚🇮🇪☘️
7:18 my mom told me about her aunt doing this and she said it scarred the shit out of her
Always thought the kelpie was the crocodile mated with Chinese whispers.
First time i heard of the dullahan, was in the anime durarara
You missed one of my favorite ones, the Pooka!
I don't know it's name but there was a Scottish "Demon" in Celtic Mythology that had the Body of a Horse with the upper half of a Skinny almost skeletal) Man sticking out from the middle of it's back, think of a Horse Rider but they're fused to the horse (and No it's not the centuar I'm talking about that has the body of a horse while it's head is replaced by the upper half of a human man)
That's the Nuckelavee
Y draig coach literally means the red red dragon, you don’t need to say the y draig, the is redundant
Coch, not coach... people get on them and ride them around the country.lol
Do one on LUGH
Thats so metal!!
So are you going to use _any_ of the pre-Christianized versions of the Sidhe or just parrot off what the priests tell you?
Ever heard of Sin Eaters? Are those found in Celtic lore? Just curious.
4:33 coffin dance but cat version
Do more TES pls
Stopping at 7:05 - praying this isn't another "malevolent faerie" telling of an otherwise forewarn and guardian.
(Edit) Surprised to say... this one had much less ire than I am used too! Pleasantly surprised.
The leaving of iron was a warning not a ward. 'You harm or take my child and i will come after you with iron and blood'.
It was enough to make most things think twice before doing something to anger the human parent.
Banshee... Scream for me! I double dare you lass.
I love Selkies ❤️
It is interesting to note that the home of Abhartach also gave birth to Bram Stoker.
Is Auertauk another anagram for Dracula?
What about probably one of the most famous creatures; faeries?
Kelpies and Selkies are also found in Ireland.
what music is this??
Can you please tell us about the legend of Shannon my mother told me she named me after her and it appears that the information is disappearing from the internet more and more. Thanks if you can ✌️
I've had nightmares about the kelpie.
4:00 laser pointers spelled the end for them
I came for the goopy horse
great video please could you do search video for creatures of German mafology🇩🇪
