Dave, I admire the way you’re putting yourself out there to share the benefits of the lessons and your struggles. I’m impressed with your willingness to take direction and critique from Paul as you improve. I mmmmm see huge improvement in your skating over time; sometimes immediate, sometimes it takes time, like anything worth doing. 🤩

Paul has such an incredible understanding of how the edges generate the jump rotation! He also knows how to work with sensations so that skaters get the feeling as well. This is literally now a part of my axel warm up exercises. Thank you for sharing :D!

I haven't seen anyone do figures at my rink in years! Paul Wylie is amazing. He did an adult skating seminar at the Garner rink, maybe in 2018? I was star struck!!

I had a flash back when Paul had you skate inside his gloves. My coach used to put her gloves down on my paragraph loops to tighten my circle size and it always felt like I was going to hit them!

Axel’s were my favorite jumps back in the 80’s/90’s when I competed.

i also love that the top of the circle he calls it a pull. Never though of it as one but yeah it is.

I love all of these videos - but I especially laughed at the “Hip to Hip” B-52’s comment. Things coaches come up with to make it stick in the skaters’ minds. These connections he makes and the way these exercises build are just wonderful.

Oh my gosh I just got it. The hardest part for me is if I try to hook I go too much into the circle but I am getting more of what you're saying, my axel jumps too late...before I was going too much into circle but the. I just did what you were talking about...just trying to jump fwd... but what you need is a straightness to that pull jump hook....gonna try this....tks!

It’s so interesting that something as simple as a figure eight just blows skaters minds. I see it a lot, in kids that are doing doubles, but they can’t trace an 8!😅

I think the last exercise could eventually prepare you to learn the skid take-off for the axel.

Dave, your head needs to be more upright on the figure 8's. It is too far forward and leaning inward. On the hop, make believe that it is a bunny hop without using the toe pick of the free leg. Use the outside edge rocking to the toe pick to take off.

Videos like this make me wonder, does skating create people who love micro mangaging or does it create them? 🤣 Both? 🤷‍♀️

@@ellerivendale3290 he can try! The second motion , the pull, he’s wearing Gold Seals which make that move easier and he isn’t even trying. Paul admonishes him to stand up… there’s not even a twitch in his body indicating he’s trying to not be hunched. He has went around the United States, working with Olympic champions, coaches of Olympic champions, and other Olympic medalists, and can’t do an edge pull.
That would be fine as an adult skater, as I understand how difficult it is. The reason why I have absolutely no sympathy or patience for him is how, cruel, and impatient he is with international athletes when they struggle. If he can dish it, he can take it. But maybe Temper his speech With the fact that he can’t even pretend to make even the most minuscule improvement on very basic things. Skating is very hard. I just don’t hear that understanding in his critique. That’s why I’m on his head.

@@TheSkatingLesson Paul, is worth watching. I just feel bad that someone who’s a cardiac patient is stressing themselves out with someone who skates like they borrowed their joints from a mummy. The least you could do is pretend to adjust anything. The man tells you to skate on a smaller circle and you act like you’re carving out a pond into the ice. Terrible.
