Here's how to paint an apple with watercolor. We're going to use underpainting to add depth and realism to this watercolor painting. Underpainting is a useful painting technique that allows you to paint your shadows first.

I feel like I just understood more about watercolour in 5 minutes than I have in the past 5 years, thank you for this video, everything makes a so much more sense all of a sudden
Yay! 🎉
Great tips and a lovely aesthetic sense. So, after 30 years I'm getting back into watercolours because I need art in my life right now to keep me sane while the world falls apart and rockets fly overhead. But, why else would we need art but to make sense of the senseless? So, congrats Danny. You're now my art teacher. Good luck ;)
Be aware that if you paint yellow over blue, there's a good chance you'll end up with green. Depends which blue you use. Payne's or Davy's Greys (which are both actually bluey grey, although admittedly the latter sometimes has more of a greenish tinge) are much more reliable, and won't create green when used in layering. It's also worth bearing in mind the old adage "Tone does the work and colour gets the glory".
True! I think the apple might be the perfect subject here because green doesn’t necessarily look out of place. I’ve definitely used paynes grey as well.
I’m a beginner and must have watched at least a hundred videos since I started about a year and a half back. I have never seen anything like this! Would you please do a simple little landscape using this technique. Thank you.
Iam a beginner and this is really great . Would you paint a tree with shadows and light ? Thanks.
BEST demo and explanation ever!! Now it all makes sense, and has tempted me to try this method. Thank you💜
I absolutely suck at watercolor, but this video has been very useful! Thank you for providing the traditional art world some advice!
Reminder: drink water daily.
God bless you and your family! ❤️❤️
Thanks so much! Glad it was helpful! 💧
This really illustrated the power of watercolor in layers. I feel like I could do this in my painting and I will definitely try! Thank you!
Love this technique! Tried it based on your Instagram reel but having the longer video helps so much more. Thanks!
How did it work?
(outdated comment) this is a really good tutorial, its so underrated! how does this not have atleast 10K views?
Maybe one day! Thanks for the support!
@@dannydrwing yw! i subbed to you :]
So true, just watched your pot plant short video, this explains how you paint ed similarly. Huge thanks!
❤
Now it does :D
Thank you so much! I loved your tutorial! You are going to be added to my list of mentors who are helping me learn the basic concepts of good art in realism style.
Thanks so much! Welcome!
Great lesson! Really emphasized the importance of an under painting. Few tutorials today even mention an under painting much less show how to do it correctly. If the Apple were to be green or orange would you still use a blue under painting?
Usually blue is a good go to because of the reflection of the blue sky, but feel free to experiment!
@@dannydrwing - Good point. I’ll give it a whirl. Thanks.
Nice video on watercolor 👌👌
Thanks!
Effectively, the blue is the shadowing, which is a good way to begin.
Personally, depending upon the predominant colour of the finished artwork, I mix a shadow colour using two primaries and a complimentary colour.
In this case, I would've used a hint of a red-biased hue to slightly warm the shadow mix.
I’ve done blue under painting for years :)
Yay!
Why is the "stem hole" so dark though? In the reference image it's one of the brightest parts of the image
It’s just a reference. You can print whatever you want. Also, the stem hold does have a dark shadow in it, it just fades to a highlight. I probably could have had it lighter on top 🤷🏼♂️
Brilliant ❤ . I didn't know that I could underpaint in watercolor
Thank you so much for your advice!... :)
Wow please paint everything!!!!
You made that look so easy.
Cool! I wish someone would do a watercolor video on how to get the paint on the brush, keep water and paints clean while going between them etc.
It isn’t always necessary to keep your paints super clean or your water. However, having more than one water cup to switch between can help. Also rinsing your brush before getting a new color is a must for keeping really pure colors.
@@annstropes2236 Thanks! People in videos do things so deftly because they're used to the process.
very interesting, i really did like the video, great explanation and demo! thank you!!
Glad you liked it!
Really great, many thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it!
Really helpful thanks dude
Loved watching this video
Thanks!
I appreciate your process . Under painting with blue was a surprise to me. Very effective. I hope I can give it a try. Thanks
Loved this ART TUTORIAL
Thanks :)
@@dannydrwing U R MOST WELCOME SIR 🙏
Awesome introduction to underpainting!
Yay!
Great tutorial. A village scene or city scene tutorial would be nice
On the list! Might do a sunrise skyline type of thing soon.
I will try this in acrylics 😊 thank you! ❤
H2O oil paint is the shiz niz , blending is fun now, current project is of a Blue Shark with crepuscular rays highlighting the main subject through the ocean surface. Painting is a ton of fun with these aqua oils.
Woodland/forest mushrooms. And small animals. 😊
Love this tutorial. Really nice job. Thank you - You're helping my perfectionist tendencies!
Loved the way you layer I’m painting tiles right now and it’s a whole new challenge but by your method it works so thank you
Love it!!
Good information! Thanks.
Very good video, thank you for sharing Danny.
Nicely demonstrated, it's a very oil painting effect really.. Interesting
This is what my art teacher taught us at school but I hadn’t seen anyone else do it! I loved this!
Yay!
As a Blue enjoyer, this is a win for me

Wow best painted apple I've ever seen! So realistic for watercolor :) Could you paint a bird? A crow would be great for Halloween.
I think this is the inspiation to try watercolors again. Delightful and yet seemingly do-able.
Do it!
Very interesting!❤😊
love your tips on underpainting!
Please paint plums! With leaves. Very nice tutorial.
Very beautifully done. Thank you for sharing!🍎🖌️
Thank You. Excellent tutorial.
Wow! What a great idea/approach!!!
Your explanation is so true, really brilliant 👏 👌 👍 😄
❤Oh my goodness!!!❤I love this técnic ❤Thanks a lot
You're really helping my paintings 😅. Your apple is perfection!
Another very interesting tutorial‼️
I’ll be practicing red/green apples and the banana you did too.
I’m getting at it right away.
THANKYOU
Good luck!
I have adopted your techniques in my own painting. I love the different makes. Thank you
Wow thank you going to try that😀
Hi, your apple is so well done, it looks realistic!. Great job! If you ever feel like painting a Tropical fish, I would appreciate it. ❤Thank you. Helene
Thanks for the idea!
To ask what we'd want you to paint next would put you in a tough position. There's really only one other thing you could do to match but not top what you just did. You just painted the one fruit most resembling the Heart, to pull a Newton and add an empty clutched hand above would be to paint the most powerful symbol in all the Universe. The gravity of Love. Everything else, flowers, landscapes, sky, sun and moon, ocean & waves, people, all are constructs of where Love abodes, that simple apple. Good technique. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thank you SO much for this amazing video! I"ve been struggling with watercolors and layering. I just had a huge AHA moment when I painted along with the video. I would love to see more videos from you about underpainting, glazing etc. I really like your style of teaching/explaining
Thank you this was very helpful. Could you do a video with tips for doing landscapes in watercolor? It’s the one thing I just cannot get right.
I saw the yt short that had the link to this first, but i never saw the link so i was just trying to do it off of that lol. This is much better.
Haha yeah more explanation here!
Can you make a tutorial on a realistic nature study like a plant in a pot ive just gotten into watercolor and it would be perfect for art class
That sounds like a great idea!!
Excellent explanations and techniques 😊
Other than practice 😅, how do you learn to really see all tge different colors of an object? This is an amazing tutorial!!
Wow... grate. Thank you
You bet!
Thank you….are you waiting for the paint to dry after each layer? I am a beginner.😊
Sometimes! If you don’t want the paint to blend together, you should let it dry. If it blends too much everything might turn into a brown blob. Dry paper will make sharp lines, damp paper will let us blur and mix a little. Trial and error!
@@dannydrwing Thanks. This was my question, too.
This is great. It sure solves my struggle with shadows. Exciting view, thanks.
Love it.just subscribed😊
Welcome! :)
very nice! please keep it coming; more tutorials in real time. Thank you!
I will! Glad you're finding them useful!
Thank you! I've never seen this before. beautiful apple!
Thanks! :)
Hello art friend 👋 just following you here from instagram…newbie artist in my 50’s and excited to learn from you
Welcome!!
Old artists are very talented
Top🎉. I am in my sixtees ,startet 1 year ago with painting,at least i try😂. This Tutorial is the best.thank you.
As a proud smurf, I'm glad to see someone finally acknowledging the color blue's obvious supremacy.
💙
Really interesting...
Nicely explained
That was an amazing tutorial so thanks for posting it 🌸
You bet!
Great tutorial
Thanks! :)
TNX 4 the email feedback, I will use student grade until I develop my STYLE while placing artwork into my two writing series Kaleidoscope {short stories} and Rainbow {children book genre }
Can you do a tutorial on how to paint a white dog with watercolor? Thank you!
Holy cow! That was super cool!
❤️
Excellent
Thank you so much I really enjoyed this and learned quite a lot!
Thanks!!
For the longest time, I was scared to use blue in my work. I do portrait a lot and I was comfortable using the warm skin tone and brown for shadow. Then I experimented mapping shadow with cool tone and the subject came out like an alien but when I added the warm tone the work just looked more complete and cohesive.
Yeah can definitely be tricky. Green skin is not usually appealing 😂
Wow
Great explanation and demonstration! New sub!
Welcome!!
Merci!
Thanks so much, Pierre!
this is cool. I like the layer of yellow, too, that makes so much sense for getting the highlights in first. Question: does it matter what blue you use for underpainting? by that I mean do you prefer a more or less granulating color? or do you have certain blues that you rely on for underpainting specifically? thanks so much
I usually use ultramarine, not sure though!
Thanks!
Interesting. I will give this a try. Thank you. A kind of pet peeve I have with UA-cam demos is the presenter's seeming need to add music, which is almost always too loud and very distracting. You are teaching a lesson here, and people (at least this person) want to hear what you are saying. The volume of the music, if you use it at all, should be much lower than what it is.
Fair enough, this was a video I made a while ago, definitely will lower the volume next time
Some of us want to hear you, not the music.☺@@dannydrwing Haven't tried this technique yet, but I will.
Wow, love it
Very intersting... thank you very much.... does it work with everything? I will try this ....
Trial and error but definitely worth trying!
Very nice I see that every wash was wet on dry must have took some time 🙂
❤❤❤❣
I just discovered your channel, this is a superb tutorial! Thank you very much! The music was a bit too loud though and overwhelmed your voice a bit too much.
Oops! I’ll fix next time :)
I would like to see your technique used on a loose, watercolor portrait. Nice work! How long have you been at this?
About a year!
Danged. That is encouraging. Greetings from France!@@dannydrwing
🇫🇷
So great. Beautiful apple. It is fall so how about fall leaves. 1 bright and 1 brown.
Love the underpainting technique. What blue did you use and do you have a preferred brand of paint?
I think it was ultramarine, I believe more saturated is usually better.
I’m just using cheap beginner paints for the most part!
@@dannydrwingWow on the beginner paints! It just highlights the importance of technique above all.
Very helpful, thank you! What brush were you using?
Been using some round brushes from Grabie. They work pretty well!
Hello Danny! This is a very interesting way of painting, thanks lot, I will try it. Which blue do you recommend most?
Up to you! I use ultramarine often times.
Fabulous tutorial! Are you layering/glazing or doing some wet on wet? I know it's dry for the highlights, but is there any wet on wet in this piece?
Mostly dry with each layer, a little wet on wet within each layer, but no reason you can’t use one or the other!
Hello, just found your video and it’s very useful about under painting. Since watercolor paper comes in so many varieties and can have different effects, what kind of paper did you use? Also your brush? Synthetic or natural hair or a combination or both? Would really appreciate information about these details! Thank you.
I think most of my brushes are synthetic. And 100% cotton paper whenever possible!
@@dannydrwing Thank you for the information!
i need help with colour theory! how do you know which colours to pair with others for more complex compositions?
Materials = ??? paint, paper, brushes... etc>
Working on getting some affiliate links set up! For beginners I usually just recommend cheap stuff until you know if you like painting or not!
What color is a blueberry 🤔
green
Yaaa green😊
What kind of yellow did you used so it didn’t turned green after applied over ultramarine?
Just a cadmium yellow!
@@dannydrwing Thanks
@@rankatimm9723 If you let the blue dry before adding in the yellow it won't turn green. It's fun to experiment, though - sometimes a bit of green in an apple makes it more real.
