Haha I think you can dislike something without being able to voice exactly what made it bad until later on. You could also think something is good, but then once you delve into its complexities, realize that it's actually pretty bad. The opposite is also true. You can like something and not realize exactly what made it good and why you like it, until you learn more about plot, themes, conflict resolutions, character development, etc.. you get my point 😂 It's like when I first watched Black Widow, i thought it was ok, but lacking. Now after looking back on it and viewing a few breakdowns, I can tell you exactly why I thought it was lacking and outright say it was a terrible film 😂
If it didn't have any message in it I would think it's garbage That's why I never liked James bond thought the mf'er was a shallow douchebag who went after equally shallow b'tches. Never understood the hype of it
That dbz review was so funny. The way you prefaced it by addressing the mass stereotype was so on point. You straight up dumped on dbz in such a funny way by calling out the flaws and the confusion of why people even like it is great. I love dbz and you would have to laugh at that if your not some salt troll.
Ok but it's 2yrs later and "salt roll" just sent me into gd hysterics. I'm gonna need a reason to use that in a conversation soon or imma fkn throw a tantrum
It sounds like a lot of people are saying overhyping a great show will make the show seem mediocre when they watch it. This is not really to blame on the hype, but on how the hype has been interpreted. To me, when someone is hype about something, all I think is "huh, guess I'll check it out" and put it on my watch list. I never think "well this show better blow my damn mind". Hype is akin to a recommendation, not a freaking Emmy (which can also be horribly wrong). Hype is exciting. Seeing your friends and hearing them get over-the-moon excited when they say how much they love a show is awesome. Just interpret that excitement properly, and you'll never be misled. Note: Dorohedoro is freaking sick go check it out
This. I've always made sure not to set my expectations too high of any show people reccommend to me, and this way I think I end up enjoying more shows or disliking them less.
The problem is more how people recommending the show, they come with a promise "a is the best anime of all time", "if you like a then you def like b", "a has the best world building", "a has the best mc", etc. It make you unconsciously expect something. And when you see their promise is actually meh for you or you see it as bad thing, you feel some level of dissapointment. Now if you dont have this certain goal created by effect of overhype, you probably can enjoy the show as it is.
The issue is that the people that do the recommending say things such as., Oh this anime will be anime of the year. Or something like the manga is a masterpiece which sets my expectations higher
The phrase "fake fan" pisses me off so much. The best part of liking something is having people to talk about it with and share it with. Whenever something I like starts to get a lot of attention and more people get into it, I'm super happy. I'll never understand gatekeepers.
Yeah man gatekeepers are generally almost always dumb as hell. Remember I saw a video that mentioned a girl raging like a bi*ch because a dude ate tofu despite not being vegan, because apparently tofu is only for vegans because vegans don't have enough variety or whatever, and the dude that ate tofu must be trying to decieve people that he's vegan so he can be popular ... My first reaction was "Yeah whatever, go eat leaves or something and leave the man and his tofu alone."
What the fuck even is a "fake fan?" If someone enjoys something they're a fan. That's it. Call someone a fake fan because they watched 10 episodes of one piece. Okay? Do I need to watch ALL of One Piece to get my fan card? All 981 fucking episodes? Or can I upgrade after episode 528? How do you even quantify something like this? This is like Ign rating a game a 7.9. Like what the fuck just give it an 8 you shitbiscuits!
Imagine supporting an anime for a very long time even when its not yet popular. You donate and share it to others and all of sudden it gets the publicity it deserves. After all that some guy who watched 2 episodes is now acting like a big shot who think he knows better than every fan in the community. The bad thing is that he just uses the anime popularity for clout.
@@user-dq9so8nq7t yeah, except that doesn't happen, and even if it does that's not really what this is about. We're talking about people who are fans for a longer time than you and Lord that fact above you and/or forbid you from liking the same thing they do. It isn't limited to anime. I had a dude tell me not to play War Thunder bc I'm not a real fan and I don't know how to play the game (despite the fact that to like it and know how to play it I NEED to try playing it in the first place). Plus I don't get why people wouldn't want to spread around the thing they're fans of, and rather keep it to themselves. It's selfish not only because other people can't enjoy it but also because the creator might depend on more people liking their product.
Idk bro Imma just go about this rationally. Considering his past vids I'd say the next one is gonna be a banger too, but you never know. Until I see other people react to it I won't form a premature opinion on it.

I've always personally tried to use the word 'favorite' instead of 'best' when describing things I like. JoJo's is my favorite anime, is it the best? To be frank I have no idea. Enjoyment is subjective, just because I love Tokyo Revengers doesn't mean that my friends have to either, or that my friends not liking it then has to impede on my own enjoyment of it.
Exactly, there's no "best" since everyone has different opinions so it could be the worst for someone. My favorites land in Hunter x Hunter and Jojo's too since it's adventurous and unique, but other people might not like those so even if it was qualified "best" by some company or whatever someone will always disagree. Also I really like getting my friends into stuff I like, but ad you said it doesn't matter if they don't like what you like. They actually got into those both animes though lmao.
Amen. I made an account for MyAnimeList and it is so annoying always getting the discussion notifications: Is blablabla the best anime ever? vote here for the best anime ever. Why do anime fans care so much? Anime fans are the only ones who compete like that. And to be honest, there is no best anime. No one is discussing the best cartoon either. Anime fans scare me
Another thing to note, you don't have to lower your expectations to avoid hype. It's entirely possible to go into something with high expectations and not feel incredibly let down when those expectations aren't met. "Yaknow, this isn't all that I was hoping it would be, fair enough, time to carry on with the rest of my day."
Idk, 99% of the time I agree. Like Tower of God I feel didn't live up to the hype but I still really enjoyed it. But my one exception is Demon Slayer. I really feel like I would have liked it more if I hadn't been expecting an absolutely incredible experience. I think it was just because the disparity between the hype and the reality was so vast tbh. Usually when an anime is overhyped it's not too far behind your expectations, but this time it was way behind. I blame my buddy Craig tho, dude raved about DS pretty much every time I saw him for like a year straight. Love him tho 💕
The difference is MINDLESS hype overriding reasonable expectation. You don't have to 'lower' your expectations to have them be reasonable. You just have to not let them be INFLATED by others. There's nothing wrong with being excited and eagerly looking forward to something. Just don't expect it to be perfect and put it on a pedestal. Perfection is a pipe dream that should it ever really be achieved, would be a vast disappointment in and of itself. It's all downhill from there, after all.

The elitism in anime makes me roll my eyes so hard they see my brain. Just enjoy it and be happy other people are enjoying it so companies get paid and are incentivized to make more. Well said.
Agree, to a certain degree. With a significantly high amount of bullshit activism entering anime communities these past few years, saying all this nonsense about how horrible, or _"harmful"_ certain anime is, wanting to use cancel culture to try and control Japan's media. Trying rid of all the fun stuff that contributes to making anime what it is, in an attempt to turning the industry into the exact same sinking fucking ship situation as the American comics industry is, a.k.a. Woke bulllshit. If this was 10 years ago, I'd 100% agree with you in being against it, in letting others like what they wanna like, but that was prior to anime as a medium being mainstream, prior to all the bullshit feminism, SJW, and mentally dysfunctional behaviors - such as treating 2D fictional characters like real people, and giving them real human rights. Making certain idiotic individuals lash out and harass Artists and Mangaka on twitter. Now I kind of support Elitism & Gatekeeping in the global anime community. Because shit is just ridiculous now.
Meh the normies who mostly hypes up an anime aren't actually its real fans. Everytime I see someone hypes up a particular anime I just tell them to spread the word on someone who asked.
I remember growing up watching DBZ we had a favorite joke. "How many DBZ characters does it take to screw in a lightbulb? One but it takes nine episodes."

I'm of two minds on the issue of growing fanbases: On one hand, I love to see a community grow and prosper, getting more members, more content, and a more rich experience. On the other hand, there is a critical mass where the community is infested by rat bastard scumsucking chickenshits and they ruin it for everyone who liked it in the first place by imposing ridiculous double standards on everyone, thereby effectively outcasting all of the original people who were into that shit and helped grow the community in the first place because they are too problematic, or they said some edgy shit a decade ago. I do believe in fake fans - not the kind of people you talk about, like random egirls wearing merch from a show they saw two episodes of, but the kind of people who join a community because it's an easy way to gain perceived status over others. If you've been around the internet for a while, I'm sure you can think of a few examples of people who have zero interest in the fandom or product, and instead are seemingly just there to fuck with people.
So rightly put. This is probably the biggest reason why i don't engage too much now. I just watch, read, and share with my brother. Back in the days, i used to be so active on anime online forums, and there was not as much toxicity as you see today. Nobody cared too much about making a show seem more superior to another. You watched what you liked, talked about it, shared the excitement, shared your life, made memories. Now you cannot even leave a comment somewhere without attracting people who are there just to mess around. All i can hope is that they are watching paid content- would give some worth to the toxicity they spread.
Basically overhype ain't the issue, it's the clout chasers who capitalize off of the hype, i got no problem with overhype, but i do despise clout chasers
I guess it is what it is. And you most likely have to make a choice either way: To keep your fanbase as sterile as possible but at the cost of popularity, or make your fanbase known to wider masses but at the cost of that sterility in the first place. I'm sure each option has its own advantages and disadvantages, it all comes down to what things that you are willing to sacrifice in the end.
Maybe the concept of a „community“ revolving around some fandom is just silly. Just because we like the same thing and maybe talk about it, doesn’t make us a „community“, some kind of primary settler pioneers that later newcomers are diluting.
The percentage of assholes in a fandom tends to hover around the same number. The issue is in big fandoms the total number is huge even if the percentage isn't, and as such they find each other more easily and cause more issues

like i started watching Demon Slayer before it got most of the hype it has now, and i enjoyed it a lot. i didn't think it was one of my ultimate favorites or that it was super special in any way, but i really liked it. then i got shocked when it suddenly got this huge hype and popularity. i was shocked but also happy because it _is_ a nice anime and i was glad so many people like it. but then lots of people started saying stuff like about how it's the best anime, has the best characters, has the best plot, etc. i got annoyed because i seriously didn't think it was _that_ special. i chalked up those kinds of comments to people who aren't that familiar with anime and just went along with the hype and amazing visuals. and yeah, i also chalked up most of Demon Slayer's popularity to its animation and how the characters, premise, and plot are decent enough that they can overhype them. consequently, i find a lot of Demon Slayer fans annoying and even find myself avoiding content related to it. but do i dislike Demon Slayer now? nope. do i think its ruined now? not really. i still more or less like it as much as i initially did. the fans can affect your opinion on the show, but the base for your opinion has to be the show itself. without seeing other people's opinions, i thought Demon Slayer was great. after seeing people praise the characters and plot too high (imo), i got annoyed and mentally compared it to other animes and noted how much better other animes are (imo), lowering my initial opinion of Demon Slayer in a "oh this isn't as good as i first thought it was now that i think about it" way. then i saw opinions praising Demon Slayer that i haven't thought of and actually agree with, so my opinion of it went up again in a "ooh i didn't realize that, now i can appreciate it more" way. but ultimately? i try not to get involved in the fandoms of stuff i'm not _that_ into. yeah this was purely a rant
Yup same for me went in because of the hype and turned out to be "meh okay" for me nothing special. @@yvngyagami yeah, there are definitely fans that genuinely believe it's the best even after considering the other stuff they've seen, but you can still be a fan of something without thinking it's the best. like my problem is with people who claim that it's the best when most of their admiration is bcs of the visuals (which is a valid thing to be impressed by; the problem's when they judge the quality of the overall show from mostly the visuals instead of just, y'know, saying the visuals are amazing) or some superficial or objectively not impressive thing. not that it bothers me so much since it's really not that bad compared to some other fandoms, but it does get annoying sometimes since it's so widespread, hence the rant.

Easier said than done honestly. Also, it's the "form your own opinion" shtick why we got stupid ass mofos thinking the earth is flat lol.
What is in the fear of "overhyping" you didn't mention - people often don't want to be associated with a fanbase full of people they don't like and never wanted to interact with - especially regarding their interest. Like they don't want to share it with "wrong" people who will ruin it for them. The show is not only the expirience of consuming - but all the side stuff - fanwork, speculating, sharing impressions.
It really is a matter of interests, like personally I love jjk and can't wait to see what they do next. If people didn't similarly enjoy it that's fine, they can watch something else I might not enjoy that brings them excitement and hype
Well in some cases, disappointment can be very painful. In my case, it happens all the time. That's why my mindset has adapted to a point I expect a show to be bad as soon as someone recommends it to me, and from that point on I can only get positively impressed

Hype itself doesn't ruin anything, but it can lead to changing your expectations. Raising your expectations of something will cause your expectations to clash with reality, which almost always leads to you not enjoying something as much as you otherwise might have.
I watched Hunter x Hunter at the recommendation of a friend who was really jazzed about it. It took ages to watch and I liked Chimera Ant but wasn't blown away by it, and the pacing annoyed me. I attributed my dislike to the hype, but I think that was probably just a defense mechanism so I wouldn't have to take personal responsibility for not being enamored of the show the way my friend was, and disappointing him. It's very alienating when everybody is really into a show and I'm not but it's not because of fucking hype. By that same token, it's easy to pathologize that feeling of specialness when you find a show that you can share with others and then let them get into it and feel special by proxy. That has been a harder thing to grow out of because being a lonely weirdo, there were few ways to feel special and connect with others. Still toxic as shit though. Haha I think you can dislike something without being able to voice exactly what made it bad until later on. You could also think something is good, but then once you delve into its complexities, realize that it's actually pretty bad.
The opposite is also true. You can like something and not realize exactly what made it good and why you like it, until you learn more about plot, themes, conflict resolutions, character development, etc.. you get my point 😂
It's like when I first watched Black Widow, i thought it was ok, but lacking. Now after looking back on it and viewing a few breakdowns, I can tell you exactly why I thought it was lacking and outright say it was a terrible film 😂

Well said!
exactly
One word? Elitism. Another? Condescending.

Very very true
That's not how dopamine works but sure

I love making fan art and stuff (ex some anime themed earrings I’ve made and a work in progress jacket!)) so its nice to see people who also appreciate the work put into these stories!! Crazy fans will always exist, but there’s at least a solid chance to outweigh the crazy by focusing on positive aspects of fandoms :)
I actually like the hype that surrounds an Anime , it sort of brings people together and the popularity is what will eventually lead to a sequel .
hype and popularity outside of Japan rarely affects the decision to make sequels for an anime.
@@dire213 true, but you could make the argument that hype for a show abroad is reflective of the hype/popularity a show is experiencing in Japan as well. This is usually the case.
to those people who says "don't overhype":
when its good it becomes popular. dont hate people who likes to watch popular animes. discouraging people (like you own the god damn anime) to watch them is toxic.
Scamb, u gotta do an evangelion revisted, plus end of envangelion review. You gotta give it another shot brother
Idk if it is just me, but when a show gets alot of hype, that actually turns me away from it more than it attracts me. Imo, a show's appeal works at its finest when you have no prior expectations to it. If I see peeps overhyping a particular show to hell, then more likely I would put it in the back burner of my mind and watch at a much later time if even at all
I get what you mean, but usually it's shounen and romcom manga hype for me. These categories are just too saturated and I feel like I've watched all variety of it. So lately I just watch weird anime and read thriller mangas when I have time, then I watch some of those hyped shows after the season is over.
I see you have watched that episode of "JCS - Criminal Psychology"
Nice video btw

@@ProtoZealott yep
like i started watching Demon Slayer before it got most of the hype it has now, and i enjoyed it a lot. i didn't think it was one of my ultimate favorites or that it was super special in any way, but i really liked it.
then i got shocked when it suddenly got this huge hype and popularity. i was shocked but also happy because it _is_ a nice anime and i was glad so many people like it.
but then lots of people started saying stuff like about how it's the best anime, has the best characters, has the best plot, etc. i got annoyed because i seriously didn't think it was _that_ special.
i chalked up those kinds of comments to people who aren't that familiar with anime and just went along with the hype and amazing visuals. and yeah, i also chalked up most of Demon Slayer's popularity to its animation and how the characters, premise, and plot are decent enough that they can overhype them.
consequently, i find a lot of Demon Slayer fans annoying and even find myself avoiding content related to it.
but do i dislike Demon Slayer now? nope. do i think its ruined now? not really. i still more or less like it as much as i initially did.
the fans can affect your opinion on the show, but the base for your opinion has to be the show itself.
without seeing other people's opinions, i thought Demon Slayer was great. after seeing people praise the characters and plot too high (imo), i got annoyed and mentally compared it to other animes and noted how much better other animes are (imo), lowering my initial opinion of Demon Slayer in a "oh this isn't as good as i first thought it was now that i think about it" way. then i saw opinions praising Demon Slayer that i haven't thought of and actually agree with, so my opinion of it went up again in a "ooh i didn't realize that, now i can appreciate it more" way.
but ultimately? i try not to get involved in the fandoms of stuff i'm not _that_ into.
yeah this was purely a rant
Yup same for me went in because of the hype and turned out to be "meh okay" for me nothing special. And as for the fan part yes there so many of them going on telling how demon slayer is the "best anime" or the "next big thing" even though there so many animes out there which are clearly much better than it
@@nightcoremusic1896 yeah. like duh it's enjoyable, and it definitely isn't objectively bad. but it's obviously nowhere near "best" material. only its animation is considerable for such imo. maybe its emotional aspects are a nice standout but not enough for titles like "one of the best" (at least from what i remember). it's so painfully obvious that a lot of people overhype it. i'm not surprised it has a bit of a negative reputation for it.
@@itsfine_txt Yeah not the best, but the entire movie for it was a banger
I understand where you are coming from, but that's why they are called fans. Of course some are unbearable, but no shit they are gonna call the series they like the best lmao

If someone hypes a thing up, and it ruins that thing for you. That's your fault. Form your own opinion and think for yourself.
Easier said than done honestly. Plus I find this a tad bit hypocritical; considering that viewing experience, which is important for someone to fully enjoy something, is trampled when it's anti-normie but gets a free pass when it's the normies doing the trampling.
Also, it's the "form your own opinion" shtick why we got stupid ass mofos thinking the earth is flat lol.
That Isayama impression was top-tier.
I can see why your coked up humor aligns with my own now with that intro lmao
What is in the fear of "overhyping" you didn't mention - people often don't want to be associated with a fanbase full of people they don't like and never wanted to interact with - especially regarding their interest. Like they don't want to share it with "wrong" people who will ruin it for them. The show is not only the expirience of consuming - but all the side stuff - fanwork, speculating, sharing impressions.

Well in some cases, disappointment can be very painful. In my case, it happens all the time. That's why my mindset has adapted to a point I expect a show to be bad as soon as someone recommends it to me, and from that point on I can only get positively impressed
"but have you seen the tournament of power arc!!!?"

Exactly and don't forget about reddit and Myanimelist
Suggest me some online forums or physical places anywhere on the planet where I can get to met sane individuals who offer realistic views and chat with them about an anime.

Also, I too, do not like collard greens.
I like what I like, and I always tell people to take that with a grain of salt whenever I recommend an anime. However, when something is hyped up to the gods and recommended to me, I just go in with the lowest expectations and most of the time get pleasantly surprised. And guess what? If it’s not my cup of tea, then I’m not even mad or disappointed, I can at least say I tried.
It’s way different when you invest into an anime that ends up having a shitty ending or just doesn’t ever live up to the potential that it displays in early episodes. It’s a waste of time you’ll never get back and leaves you with a more sour taste than spoiled milk…

Hype itself doesn't ruin anything, but it can lead to changing your expectations. Raising your expectations of something will cause your expectations to clash with reality, which almost always leads to you not enjoying something as much as you otherwise might have.
Just discovered the channel and cant get enough. Love it all dude. Keep it coming.
The real question is who cares what tv show/anime/moive someone hypes up? Tell them to take their opinions to someone that asked.
Thanks for acting like a rational, functional adult, my dude. Good vid as always

Getting swept up by hype is easy, but at the end of the day if something hyped up disappoints you it's your fault, not the hype's.
