One small aubergine-one amazing curry. This is typical day to day home fayre and demonstrates why Aubergine is one of Indian's most beloved vegetables.
Your Mum, she looks so serious! True professional! I bet underneath she can have a laugh?! Will try this, got some poppies in the garden just now with massive seed heads!
Hi Nisha. Please could you tell me if this recipe is in any of your recipe books? As I do enjoy a good vegetable curry. Love watching you cook on the television as well as here on UA-cam, and hopefully I will have all of your recipe book soon. They all get rave reviews along with your recipes working every time too.
If you add meat to it especially beef . Wah bhi wah It is legendary .. Please don't hesitate. The beef flavour gifted by nature is Unbelievably awesome..
The poppy seed paste is simple. To make a paste of poppy seeds traditionally a pestle and mortar (known as sheel nora in Bengali) is used. 2 tablespoons of poppy seeds along with 1 green chilli and a dash of salt with a tablespoon of water. If you have a coffee grinder you could use that to make the paste. Potatoes cooked in poppy seed paste is a popular dish in Bengal and I grew up having it in a dish with Jhinge (Ridged gourd). Poppy seed paste is delicious for its interesting texture and taste.
Many thanks for the kind comments-I prefer to use the mustard paste-English. I use the proportion of 1/3 mustard to 2/3 water but alter to taste-I love the stuff! All the best
That looks delicious. I will give it a try. Thanks for posting this recipe. One question. We like roasted vegetables in our home, would roasting the aubergine make a huge difference?
Haha, you're description of Bengali people was pretty interesting. Any LOTR references is a compliment, plus, you're not that wrong when you say "short and dark"!
Love aubergine but I hardly eat it here in the uk. I think its the amount of oil used that puts many off. In Indonesia its really common and cheap. With rice, I eat it almost daily🌶🍆
English mustard paste, is it made from mustard powder or from jarred mustard sauce, and what ratio of water to mustard to use? my mother in law is Bengali and her curry's are to dye for, but she uses loads of onions, I love the idea of cooking curry without tuns of onions... pleas keep making these awesome videos!
Nisha the Nigella seed that you use looks quite large compared to the ones that I can find in the Asian supermarkets ( Kalonji seeds) are they the same thing.
The Grandmother is a "Dark horse".... Coming over all very quiet and humble in this video .But I bet she is the life and soul at a family event !

Is it mustard powder you use or the Colmans out of the jar (vinegar tasting)?
fantastic
Beautiful family nice people ❤️
That looks delicious. I will give it a try. Thanks for posting this recipe.
One question. We like roasted vegetables in our home, would roasting the aubergine make a huge difference?
I grew up omnivore but I am now vegan and I have always been doing good aubergine!
Cheers. Hope the dish works-the poppyseed is optional but add a huge deal

your mom is cute :-)
Nisha the Nigella seed that you use looks quite large compared to the ones that I can find in the Asian supermarkets ( Kalonji seeds) are they the same thing.
Yes, kalonji is black onion seed also known as Nigella seeds
Hi Nisha, do you ever cook Hungarian?? :D
You are a very pretty and nice girl and your Mum's manner reminds me so much of my own Mum, who unfortunately is no more in this world.
You two put on a great show, and I am grateful However, I will never bow to your anti-garlic anti-ginger extremism! Never!
they are the same
South Indians use white poppy seeds in meat curries. Your mum is right. Mustard paste is used only by Bengalis.
Bengalis also use mustard oil for cooking.
Ha! Ta Kate
Fantastic video, thank you! I'll have a stab at it tonight.
I would not call it small aubergine according to Indians.
hahaha ... hobbits and short.... bengali's ! ROFL. .
Too funny. It's when here mums gives her a dirty look. You know she got in trouble for that hahaha
