But, at the BSU Bronco games (currently ranked #17 among all FBS schools!), one side of stadium (36711 cap) yells 'BOI-C' and the other 18,000 yell back 'STATE'! Appreciate your interest in how locals refer to our fair city! BTW, your figure of 750K pop is low, as recent growth has ID at just under 2mil, most of that occurring in the last 15-20yrs and being primarily in SW ID! Thanks for the post!

Ha! Lick Creek! I drove past that campsite on my way from McCall to Yellow Pine & then on to Stanley this summer. Taking the back roads was long, but the scenery was amazing and 100% worth it. Thanks for sharing & shooting!
I live in south central Texas and 42° is darn cold day for here. It almost never snows but we do have the Texas Hill Country and mountains in west Texas. My niece lives there in Boise and she loves it. I can ride my adventure motorcycle year around here. I like that. Drive/ride save. 🇺🇸
Nice change of pace doing an urban review. Was up in Idaho in early September, several highways closed due to the fires. Never saw the peaks of any of the mountains because of the smoke but the sunsets in Cascade and McCall were glorious!
Had to opportunity to check out Boise this past year. Wonderful people, beautiful landscapes, and a modern, well funded city center and facilities. Boise is doing something right and I can see why it would be an attractive place to live.

A great but old, very old Eagles song, The Last Resort, has the line " ...You call someplace Paradise, kiss it goodye..." I see Colorado, Montana and much of the mountainous west going that way. It's so crowded here in Colorado.
Boise used to be separate but everything has grown so much that Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Star and Nampa are all connected. Just look at the signs to know which one you are in. Very beautiful place and lots to do there.

It's crazy the perspective you get from video. Stacked Rock looked small when you first approached, but huge from the drone and with you on it. Sometimes even trails look scary on video, but you know they're not really that bad when you're on them. Nice video and looking forward to your trip!
There are times on your climbing that you can almost curvature of the earth looking. Pretty cool views. I noticed in Boise as you scootered no trash or graffiti that I saw. Just like when I travel to St George and Cedar City seems clean as compared to California which is sad for here. Thanks for sharing adventure.
The thing about Denver is you also have all the smaller towns up and down the front range to pick from. You can make a trip to Denver if you have to and not have to live there.
Bro, I think it’s so sick what you’re doing! I’m doing a two month trip from Arizona seeing stuff along the way and then heading up to Canada then back down along the West coast. Travel safe! Have a great one.
Come back in the winter and snow shoe that trail. It is a lot of fun. Unfortunately a fire has just swept through several thousand acres of the foothills. Didn't impact this trail, but they are still trying to subdue that fire. Fun to see you in my home town. The haze is near constant through the summer.Boise's growth has meant a lot more government control. Soon you'll need a permit/reservation to float the Boise River in the summer, just like most camping has become reservation/permit only (except BLM land which is still plentiful). Most popular places have become very crowded, like redfish and payette lakes. Lots of benefits come with growth, but usually there are just as many negatives. Like you've mentioned, depending on what you are looking for it may be considered good or bad. As a native, it has been difficult seeing places that I could go and see almost no one for a week, are now crowded. Such is life. You can dwell on it or look for something else to enjoy. Be flexible lest, when forced to bend, you break.
Most camping is free and there are no permits necessary. Redfish and Payette have always been crowded. And the Boise River is not going to have a permit system to float it. Where are you even getting that info?

When I still lived in Washington, Port Townsend was always such a great little getaway. There's a hotel with jacuzzi tubs on the balconies overlooking the water. That's the most relaxing time ever.
I was in Boise for the first time last month and was a little surprised at how big it was. It did seem like a nice city and a great place to live if you're interested in a place of that size. It was quite smokey and hazy up in the McCall area when I drove up there.
Every summer, it's intolerably hot and smokey. The place is on fire from June-October. The US Forest Service has stopped managing our national forests and so they burn.
Stack Rock is one of my go-to hikes now. I find the full 11 mile hike to be an easy 11 and the 9 is something I can take my parents on and not break a sweat. Always a good time even with the new trail.
Fantastic episode. Featuring cities/metro areas of at least a population of 100K people and is highly accessible to the gifts of the great outdoors would be a great series. Most of us dream of living in beautiful remote areas, but the reality is that many of us need to be to be near the services, amenities, and job opportunities that are offered only in cities.
Boise looks nice. I grew up in Salt Lake and would not live there or Denver. Cedar City is just the right size for us. Closer to the mountains and parks. Provo was good in the 70s but too big now. The scooter ride looked fun. I am always excited to see where you go next. It's like Where's Waldo.
As much as you enjoy places like Nevada, I think you would pleasantly surprised by eastern Colorado and really should explore it sometime. There is actually a lot to see and a lot of quiet places and wildlife, national grasslands, etc. I know for sure you'd like the Carizzo Canyon and Picture Canyon areas down in southeast Colorado just as an example. Campsites might be a little harder to find in certain parts, though - but there are some in the national grasslands etc.
Looking forward to you exploring the PNW! 4 trips west and haven't made it there...yet! I'm confident you'll surprise, amazed and educate me for my own trip! Closing in on completing a van build, an older guys fishing rig. 4 years with Envoy, really want more space for the longer...Adventures I do! Be safe and have a blast! ( don't forget to wet a line 😉)
Cool video. I'm not much of a city guy in my old age but do love a good river trail. And yeah, forest fire smoke was bad near Stanley when I was there late August. In fact I got turned back heading east my first attempt and had to circle around Boise to reach Stanley from the south. Too smokey there so hightailed it back down to Lake Alturas where the air was cleaner. And as far as the greater SLC area goes, the traffic on 15 was an absolute nightmare !
My favorite thing about Boise is my daughter and two grand-kids who live there - but the outdoor recreation is really great, too! On the other hand, my daughter's house was twice the price for half the size compared to mine, more or less. And I live in another desirable city further south. Much further south. Winter? That only happens when I go visit my grand-kids at the wrong time of year. I'm looking forward to the rest of this trip! It's been too long since I wandered the PNW beyond Boise.

Please use the drone more like this during your climbs. I loved the different perspective and it really shows what's going on better. As for the three cities, I'd rank Boise first, SLC, then Denver. Denver has just gotten too big for me. I pick Boise over SLC due to a better climate and a better social scene.
Come to Van. Island! My son loves hiking and climbing and can suggest good trips. If its on a weekend, I bet he will want to show you. He is 50 and a really good man!🦌💌❤️🥾
Having lived in the front range of Colorado for over 30 years. The primary attraction for Denver is a thriving job market and close access to endless outdoor recreation opportunities. It is getting a too crowded for me too. Once we retire in a few years we will be looking to move somewhere a bit quieter but still offer good access to mountains as well as good medical services. SLC and Boise are probably not it
The Treasure Valley is a great place to live. A place is what you make of it. Regardless of your interests and worldview, there are enough like minded people here for you. Be loving and respectful to all, and life will be good here. Lots of outdoor opportunities both north and south of Boise to keep you in awe of God's creation for a lifetime.
My wife and I would have loved to move to CO. Unfortunately we should have done it 40 years ago. I'd like to live on the western slope. Maybe close to Gunnison or Montrose.

I did a roadtrip this summer that started in Boise. The town is beautiful and the people were nice. I wouldn’t say that they were warm. But could tell that they were tired of new people and the higher cost of living. I traveled S and E due to the wildfires. Idaho is a beautiful state with so many great niches to visit.
Yes that is downtown Boise, Downtown is next to the bottom of Bogus Basin Road. Trail head is ~mid way up Bogus Basin road. I have looked up at stack rock for all of my 50 years I have yet to get up close, i think I might have to change that. That trail was opened in 2019 which is the third trail to the landmark that I’m aware of. You used to be able to drive up close from mid mountain on Boise side oh horseshoe bend hill, that got closed off years ago. Another way was from Bogus Basins parking lot. It is best seen from Eagle, it is out in the open with sky light behind it. From Boise it’s visible but usually has bogus basin behind it so it doesn’t stand out as much. If you take Harris Creek road east of Horseshoe Bend you get 3 or 4 really close and impressive views from below. Remember if you pack it in pack it out. Keep Idaho green.
Looks beautiful but I’ll always be partial to the Wasatch Range ; the perfect range between big city of Salt Lake and small mountain towns like Park City, Sundance, Heber and Midway.
Tristan, welcome to Boise. Thank you for your kind words about our town. I've spent plenty of time in all three cities, and you can guess where I finally settled. I so appreciate your fine work and all the wonderful locations you've given me to explore in this incredible part of the country. So wish I had seen you at Green Acres food truck park. One of my favorite hang outs. Happy trails brother, oh, and tight lines too.
What about Colorado Springs? It is growing by leaps and bounds which is not always the greatest thing. In less than 10 minutes you can be in the mountains, not the tallest but only about another 30 minutes you can be on top of Pikes Peak a 14er. Fly fishing, Great Sand Dunes near Pueblo, other beautiful National Parks in the state. It’s a beautiful area.
My experience with Boise since 2018, visiting a relative there. It's high desert and the terrain around Boise and Nampa is not very forested within the urban areas. It gets very hot in the summer. The traffic is hideous and there's non stop construction on outdated roads, highways, & interstates. Very family orientated. It was a red state designation but now turning more blue everyday in terms of city & county leadership officials. The budget for infrastructure has not been able to keep up with the rapid rate of population growth & so there's long commutes to work or even shopping.
Denver is nice, but traffic is horrendous. SLC is another nice city, and traffic is also horrible, and Boise is the laidback of the three but not as exciting as the other two.
Traffic is pretty horrible in all those cities. SLC is so bad because most of it is focused on I15, so many of the suburbs only have 1 way to get to the main city and back. So everyone is on that one freeway mostly. Not that where I live is better, we only have 3 freeways here in Las Vegas, and earlier this year there was construction on all 3 (now just 2). My biggest problem here is since 2020 the influx of Californians is relentless, and people driving 150mph on the freeways, and many more drunk/high drivers since 2020. So much has changed since the pandemic hit. I want to get out of here when I retire. I don't like Boise, but one of the smaller towns in Idaho might be tempting. That is if they don't have state taxes. I like Utah better, but they have state taxes, and would tax my 401k.
I wouldn't mind living in Idaho. The bike traill was great. Texas has really received a lot of new residents. The only problem I know of is the infrastructure can't keep up.
Have never been to Boise or Salt Lake City but living in Rapid City SD I have visited Denver a couple dozen times over the last 35 years and in all honesty I don’t enjoy it like I used to. It has just gotten too big and the traffic is awful.
I have not been to any of those places mentioned in this video. I hate large cities. I just to get lost & end up frustrated. I love open country where I can see most of my surroundings. On that surfing in the river I once read & observed that along with white rapids in Reno, NV. Gimmick I thought. I guess the young folks are into it.

You should travel through the Olympic Peninsula in WA...Come through Port Townsend!!!

Please do NOT review Port Townsend or anywhere in Western WA. It's fine the way it is, no more crowds needed. Oregon is lovely, go there!

As you mentioned, you can get up and go for a hike, biking, etc., before work if you want. I used to go fly fishing on the river during lunch hour.

Thanks for sharing. I suggest to either increase the frame rate or use ND filters to make the video smoother for bright scenes like this.
Please use the drone more like this during your climbs. I loved the different perspective and it really shows what's going on better.
As for the three cities, I'd rank Boise first, SLC, then Denver. Denver has just gotten too big for me. I pick Boise over SLC due to a better climate and a better social scene.

Having lived in the front range of Colorado for over 30 years. The primary attraction for Denver is a thriving job market and close access to endless outdoor recreation opportunities. It is getting a too crowded for me too. Once we retire in a few years we will be looking to move somewhere a bit quieter but still offer good access to mountains as well as good medical services. SLC and Boise are probably not it
Isn’t SLC booming as well? Probably cheaper to rent there then Denver metro area as well.

The Treasure Valley is a great place to live. A place is what you make of it. Regardless of your interests and worldview, there are enough like minded people here for you. Be loving and respectful to all, and life will be good here. Lots of outdoor opportunities both north and south of Boise to keep you in awe of God's creation for a lifetime.
I love seeing the vids of the area then go to GE and explore the big picture.
My wife and I would have loved to move to CO. Unfortunately we should have done it 40 years ago. I'd like to live on the western slope. Maybe close to Gunnison or Montrose.

I did a roadtrip this summer that started in Boise. The town is beautiful and the people were nice. I wouldn’t say that they were warm. But could tell that they were tired of new people and the higher cost of living. I traveled S and E due to the wildfires. Idaho is a beautiful state with so many great niches to visit.
Sounds like a great trip. Seattle might count as another large city with access to big mountains.
Yes that is downtown Boise, Downtown is next to the bottom of Bogus Basin Road. Trail head is ~mid way up Bogus Basin road.
I have looked up at stack rock for all of my 50 years I have yet to get up close, i think I might have to change that. That trail was opened in 2019 which is the third trail to the landmark that I’m aware of. You used to be able to drive up close from mid mountain on Boise side oh horseshoe bend hill, that got closed off years ago. Another way was from Bogus Basins parking lot. It is best seen from Eagle, it is out in the open with sky light behind it. From Boise it’s visible but usually has bogus basin behind it so it doesn’t stand out as much. If you take Harris Creek road east of Horseshoe Bend you get 3 or 4 really close and impressive views from below.
Remember if you pack it in pack it out. Keep Idaho green.

In Washington State, check out Jameson Lake, off Hwy 2. Nice quiet drive up Moses coulee (BLM land also), great pies at Jack's resort.
Its pretty, but doubt I'd ever move there...my mother-in-law lives there😂 I'm as happy as a clam here in CO!
Looks beautiful but I’ll always be partial to the Wasatch Range ; the perfect range between big city of Salt Lake and small mountain towns like Park City, Sundance, Heber and Midway.

Tristan, welcome to Boise. Thank you for your kind words about our town. I've spent plenty of time in all three cities, and you can guess where I finally settled. I so appreciate your fine work and all the wonderful locations you've given me to explore in this incredible part of the country. So wish I had seen you at Green Acres food truck park. One of my favorite hang outs. Happy trails brother, oh, and tight lines too.
What about Colorado Springs? It is growing by leaps and bounds which is not always the greatest thing. In less than 10 minutes you can be in the mountains, not the tallest but only about another 30 minutes you can be on top of Pikes Peak a 14er. Fly fishing, Great Sand Dunes near Pueblo, other beautiful National Parks in the state. It’s a beautiful area.
Have you been to Calgary? Lots of urban trails there along the Bow River. It is a great city. Nancy
My experience with Boise since 2018, visiting a relative there. It's high desert and the terrain around Boise and Nampa is not very forested within the urban areas. It gets very hot in the summer. The traffic is hideous and there's non stop construction on outdated roads, highways, & interstates. Very family orientated. It was a red state designation but now turning more blue everyday in terms of city & county leadership officials. The budget for infrastructure has not been able to keep up with the rapid rate of population growth & so there's long commutes to work or even shopping.

Denver is nice, but traffic is horrendous. SLC is another nice city, and traffic is also horrible, and Boise is the laidback of the three but not as exciting as the other two.
The traffic may be worse than years ago, but it is nowhere near as bad as other populated cities in the west.

Traffic is pretty horrible in all those cities. SLC is so bad because most of it is focused on I15, so many of the suburbs only have 1 way to get to the main city and back. So everyone is on that one freeway mostly. Not that where I live is better, we only have 3 freeways here in Las Vegas, and earlier this year there was construction on all 3 (now just 2). My biggest problem here is since 2020 the influx of Californians is relentless, and people driving 150mph on the freeways, and many more drunk/high drivers since 2020. So much has changed since the pandemic hit. I want to get out of here when I retire. I don't like Boise, but one of the smaller towns in Idaho might be tempting. That is if they don't have state taxes. I like Utah better, but they have state taxes, and would tax my 401k.
When I drove through the area in 1960 Boise's population was 40k, Bend 4000.
I wouldn't mind living in Idaho. The bike traill was great. Texas has really received a lot of new residents. The only problem I know of is the infrastructure can't keep up.
Have never been to Boise or Salt Lake City but living in Rapid City SD I have visited Denver a couple dozen times over the last 35 years and in all honesty I don’t enjoy it like I used to. It has just gotten too big and the traffic is awful.

I have not been to any of those places mentioned in this video. I hate large cities. I just to get lost & end up frustrated. I love open country where I can see most of my surroundings. On that surfing in the river I once read & observed that along with white rapids in Reno, NV. Gimmick I thought. I guess the young folks are into it.
