    I had to giggle when you said how there are probably more rack mounted mounted units sold than conventional mixers from Presonus. Aside from your video (Which is awesome BTW. I learned a lot.) I’ve found diddly squat on tutorials/reviews of the rack mount versions being used with UC Surface. I bought a 32r for my studio and a 16r for my keyboards for live shows. I love them, but it took me forever to figure them out. Not the overall concept, but little details that got in the way. Like I said, your video here helped me out a lot. Thank you! Much appreciated!

      @@joesalyers Yeah, I get it. I just wish there were more vids (like yours) out there to get folks like me going quicker. Although, I guess I could get off my ass and read the manual. 😆 But, there’s something about watching someone explain/demonstrate a thing to make stuff crystal clear. Anyway, enough of my ranting. 😆 Thanks!

    As a live audio engineer, I really appreciate that more bands are using IEMs with no cabs or stage wedges making my mix lower in volume because now I'm just mixing around the kit and nothing else. I do appreciate that IEMs sound synthetic because now you're really isolated from the room/stage ambience and sounds unnatural. I've never tried it but, always wondered, what if you add two more channels to your IEM rig for omni mics that you position halfway towards the front of the stage on either side and pan to you're POV and mix those into your monitor mixes so you get stage and some of the audience in your ears. Most likely HPF-ing the low end out so you wouldn't get any low end mumble.

    • @joesalyers
      @joesalyers  Рік тому

      I thought the same thing and I have tried it. Room mics get too far out of phase to really help and make things worse especially for singers, once you add the latency of the digital console plus the wireless IEMs you are almost 180 degrees out of phase. Adding room mics would add to the lack of phase coherency and the loss of low end and frequency masking. Their are even semi-open back IEMs like the westone ambisonic iems but they introduce the same issue since the signal you feel in your skull from singing is immediate but the IEM signal is up to 4 to 8 millisecond behind. To solve these issues I normally flip the phase/polarity on a singers mic and that way it doesn't get masked as badly. It seems to fix the issue of singers saying they can't hear themselves 9 times out of 10.
      We stopped using digital mixers about 8 months ago in favor of just using an app called mainstage that lets us use thunderbolt audio interfaces as our inputs with the lowest latency possible and any plugin that is low latency. We get better latency results under 3 milliseconds roundtrip from input to the IEM wireless box. When using the X32 we would have up to 8 or 9 milliseconds and the presonus was even worse at 11 when using more than 16 channels. Most of these lower cost digital mixers run at 48 kilohertz sampling rate which increases latency but our new setup can run 20 inputs at 96 kilohertz lowering the latency by more than half. We mostly use the brainworx BX console plugins and some from since they are zero latency channelstrips and give us all the tools we need plus I can use more than one EQ or compressor if I need it. It also allows us all to use guitar amp plugins and virtual keyboards on one machine and Apple Mac Studio with the M1Ultra chip. We have even did our first computer based gigs on my 16 inch M1 Max Macbook pro but the extra ports on the Mac Studio mac it even easier. Our whole rig is pretty small now and if I could just get the drummer to convert his kit to a mesh head trigger kit we could have a silent stage volume and never have drum bleed into our vocal mics. HAHAHA!!
      But to create a sense of space we have been using a simple room reverb called Valhalla Room on an aux that is only in our IEMs, it has no pre-delay with just some early reflections and widened. So its very short and adds some punch to the IEM. This helps a ton. It wouldn't work with mono IEM monitors since the reverb would be cancelled in the mono sum, but with stereo IEM systems it is perfect. It feels like being in a small room together.
      Cheers and thanks for watching and commenting!! Have a great day!!

      @@joesalyers Wow, that's quite a phase variance. A&H's SQ5 runs at 96k but with it's I/O might not be enough for some band setups. You could always get a stage box for extra inputs but, that starts to get pricey when you select the 96k capable version.

      @@hunkydory419 The Allen and Heath is 96K up to 16 inputs but cuts down to 48K when you use over 16 inputs. I looked at the SQ6 and considered it until I found out this issue. I also considered the Midas Heritage HD96 until I saw the real price! At $36,000 price tag its too high, when you can get the more processing power from thunderbolt interfaces and a M1 Max Macbook Pro. or even a cheaper M2 Mac Mini. Our setup needed needed 20 inputs and at least 12 to 14 outputs for live shows. So I went with the interface option and the total cost was around for the i/o was under $2000. But yea I considered the A&H for a time and even looked at Waves Soundgrid (it was even more expensive than the midas) So I tried some other options that really worked out well for us!! Cheers!

So let me get the right you don't want to use it as an audio interface you just want to use it as a mixer for a band, right? Because using it as a stand alone mixer means it is only being controlled by windows and not as an audio interface for windows. If so I can make that video for you since the control app is the same across all devices. Let me know in detail what you want to know. Thanks for watching.

      There is not any digital mixers that have a DAW built in that I know of, but the Presonus Rack Mount models do have a Stereo 2-track recorder built in that can record to an SD Card. Also you could use the Free Presonus Capture App with an iPad, Laptop, or Desktop Computer to record multitrack audio easily. Also Presonus Studio One Artist comes with this mixer Free so you could use that if you want a full DAW to record the audio with. Studio One will also transfer your mixer settings (EQ, compression, gate/expander from the Fat Channel) to the Studio One DAW and you can change them later if you want. So the StudioLive Mixers have multiple options for recording. Thanks for watching!

    • @joesalyers
      @joesalyers  10 місяців тому

      It does and works great, but if your Mac doesn’t have an Ethernet port you have to use 2 adapters to make it work. So the Mac Studio & Mac mini are fine but if you have a Mac laptop you need a thunderbolt 2 to Ethernet adapter and a thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter. A usb-c to Ethernet will NOT work since AVB requires pci lanes and only thunderbolt can provide this on the Apple laptops. Apple needs to make a thunderbolt 3/4 to Ethernet adapter so you don’t have to use 2 adapters. OWC also as a single thunderbolt dock that is $349 that has a AVB compliant Ethernet port and it’s the only one no other thunderbolt dock will support AVB. But the easy way is to get a desktop Mac or you need the 2 Apple adapters for the laptops.I hope that answers your question. If you need more information just let me know. Cheers!

    Hi! Since you use it only as an Inear box would you recomended if you were to use it as a main console on medium size live gigs? I ask because of the color of the preamps you describe as flat and dull. I am working on live audio for 2years now and am still learning. Sometimes a console just sounds right, it might have to do with the venus and other factors, but you think this could make a gig sound flat on a bad way? You can't bypass Qmix-uc because the studiolive is a DSP based converter but if you want something that has enough inputs for the same money look at the Presonus Quantum 4848 which is $1400. The 4848 is great I use 2 of them with a 48 channel Soundcraft MH-2 console so I can use the mic pres and EQs along with my outboard gear during tracking. The 4848 has 32 inputs and outputs on DB-25 so you can have XLR inputs or 1/4 inch inputs. The latency is so low with the quantum 4848 that you won't notice it. Also you can daisy chain multiple quantum's together if you ever want more inputs and outputs. Thanks for watching.

      @@agesonjohanesburg2915 the 4848 can run up to 192khz I use mine at 96k for tracking just to avoid aliasing. But yes look up the Quantum 4848 it's a powerful interface in a 1U Rack unit. 32 mics from outboard mic preamps and no need for a patchbay since the 4848 functions as a patchbay as well and you can do the routing in your DAW. I have each channel of my 4848 setup to be exactly where I want it and I just pull up that channel when I need it from my console. But you have endless options with the 4848. It's not USB but most modern computers have Thunderbolt which has significantly lower latency and the ability to write directly to disk without the overhead of CPU calls that USB has. The interface has DB25 so you would only need DB25 to XLR or balanced 1/4 inch (which ever you prefer) and come out of your preamps to the quantum 4848. @joesalyers  Рік тому +1

      You can control it with USB or you can control it with Ethernet directly to a computer. When we use it live I connect it to a router so everyone in the band can control their headphone mix from their phone over wi-fi. It has 2 Ethernet ports but one is for controlling the mixer the other is for AVB networking which can be used to record your shows multitrack if you have a Mac and a AVB Ethernet hub but it’s easier to just record shows with Presonus’ capture app over usb and then edit it later in studio one or any other DAW. AVB sucks on windows but you can always use USB. It only works with Windows 10 or 11 and MacOS/iPad to record multitrack, it will not work on Linux as an interface. But it can be controlled from a Mac, iPhone, iPad, android tablet or android phone as well as a windows laptop. Hope this answers your questions. Cheers.

Like the 32R has a total of 64 channels 32 analog and 32 virtual while my 24R is is a 48 channel with 24 analog and 24 virtual. So each one has a few feature differences. You could just make inputs 1 & 2 and output them to channels 17 and 18 in the universal control mixer and still use them. Just set it up in the patchbay and on your mixer. Cheers!!!

    I’m going to use my 24r live the first time to run sound and record. Have you recorded to a card? They want me to record 3 sets which is approximately 3 hours of music. Is it feasible or better to just open the daw and record to that while also running sound?

    • @joesalyers
      @joesalyers  Рік тому +1

      Use a laptop and Presonus Capture because the Rack models only record a 2 track stereo to the SD card not multitrack. Presonus Capture is free and will record all day long with no issues but a 4 hour practice for my band usually is about 14 to 18 gigabytes once we are done. So make sure you have the hard drive space. But we have 22 channels recording so it will be less if you use less channels. Also you can record the stereo 2 track to the SD card as well while recording multitrack over USB as a simple backup. Cheers.

      @@Souldoubtrocks Yep you can get The Presonus Capture App free from their website. Just do a google search for Presonus Capture for your type of computer and download it for Windows or Mac which ever you have. The Presonus Capture app will record clean & flat multitrack of each channel with NO eq or compression to your computer and the SD card will record a 2 track Master output stereo file so you can listen to the Main front of house mix that the crowd heard as a reference. Just take a few hours the day before and look at the Presonus Capture app to learn your way around, but if you have used most DAWs you will find the presonus capture app to be a nice simple multitrack recorder. Cheers and thanks for watching!! Best of luck recording your show!!

    • @joesalyers
      @joesalyers  2 роки тому

      You just tap on the fader of the channel you want to EQ and the EQ will be in the top part of the app. It really helps to download the app, it's free for windows, mac android and ipad so grab the Presonus universal control app and look it over that way you will be more familiar with it and can make the changes yourself if you need to from the stage. Also with Mixers like this it really helps to read the manual, I know that no one likes to read those boring manuals, I know I don't like too, but it really helps to learn all the little tricks with piece of audio gear like this. Presonus also has a great videos on this mixer on their youtube channel as well. Thanks for watching!!

    does anyone know, with the 24r in stagebox mode, can you also run it as a usb interface ? Hook up a laptop with USB running Ableton and push output straight into it? or would I still need a seperate audio interface for the laptop?

    • @joesalyers
      @joesalyers  Рік тому

      No you can't if the 24R is used with another Presonus Mixer as a stagebox Your Laptop would have to be connected to the Main Presonus Mixer. But if the 24R is your only mixer you can use it as an interface and a mixer at the same time. But you can do this it just depends on what your setup actually is. If you could tell me what you have I could tell you exactly how to set it up.

    • @joesalyers
      @joesalyers  2 роки тому +1

      Not just AVB but also USB 2.0 up to 24 inputs can run up to 96K but anything over 24 inputs & outputs on USB 2.0 has the limitation of 48K, where as Firewire (which ran up to 96K on the previous models) as well as higher bandwidth options like USB 3.0 or higher and thunderbolt are not limited in the same way. I wish Presonus would just make all in one solutions like this as audio interfaces as well that could support higher sampling rates. But for the price it's a great digital mixer. Thanks for watching!
