These otter pups were given to me by villagers at one week old to rescue, their mom was killed by poachers leaving them defenseless😢. We raised the baby otters to survive in the wild to be released when old enough. Two soft releases resulted in them being captured by poachers' snare traps. We had to stumble in the jungle late at night going by their loud high pitched screams. They were both injured and it took a while to recover. It was decided that they are no longer suitable for release and are now Ambassadors of their kind. They have never been on a leash and follow us around the property, beach, or mangroves. They live in outside enclosures and eat 2 pounds of fresh fish each daily!
Most pet otters you see on the internet were gotten because the parents are killed to get the weaned juvenile otter pups to be sold to illegal wildlife traders. Unweaned offspring are usually left to die as they are very difficult and expensive to nurse. I have come across 6 dead babies as a result of this practice. It is so heartbreaking. Please do not get otters as pets. It is a very sad tale for them to become pets and their families destroyed for our pleasure.
Otter habitats are slowly being taken over by human developments. They are now at Vulnerable status as declared by the IUCN. (International Union for Conservation of Nature)

Ah Yes, so typical. She Will get a nice clean bath and then straight to the mud. No matter where, she always digs in the mud.

@@OtterMom Not too bad, off for a blood test this afternoon and to see my diabetes nurse. It looks like I will have to go on to insulin. It has been on the cards now for quite a while. It is a problem with my kidneys not functioning properly, and that restricts the amount of drugs I can have. Also my pancreas is not really responding to the Gliclazide, a bit like flogging a dead horse. Even though I am talking 4 Gliclazide a day my blood sugars are still too high.
Otherwise not too bad, Covid jab was OK, no real side effects. If you get a choice the Pfizer jab has the least side effects. My mate had the Astrazeneca jab and it knocked him sideways for 3 day. Flu symptoms, bad headache, stiff and sore, high temperature, shivers and feeling cold even with the central heating on. Glad I didn't have that one.
