Important Things Down Here ⤵
I’ve been playing electric guitar for over 10 years now, but not too long ago I got a Violin and decided to play for the first time!
Kayrina has been playing violin for years and she has taught me a few things in advance, but I think it’s safe to say I’M USELESS lol
Violin is definitely difficult to master and is intimidating as a beginner, but it is extremely rewarding when you can make it sound beautiful!
I just want to make it NOT sound like a sheep being tossed into a wood chipper…
LOL
If there’s any useful advice or any other instruments you’d like to see me play, leave a comment letting me know ^-^

What advice do you guys have for beginner violinists?
do you know how to play the skin flute? ;)
Get finger tapes and a book for beginners Also if your going to use a bow you need some rosin
Musick you should do a colab with twosetviolin
go get a fretless guitar to get used to fretless board lol
Musick you should probably get used to holding the bow correctly as that is a crucial part of playing the violin
You must practice 40 hours a day for good violin skill
Adagio lmao true
Hol up
Ling ling would approve
If you play something slowly, you can play it quickly.
Ling ling would not like the pick being used on this
He needs the ling-ling potion
Haha lmao
Why spend time typing this comment when you could be PRACTICING
40 hours a day, go P R A C T I C E
He needs Ling Ling insurance too before all the classical musicians start roasting him
We all need haha
Alright, you've played a violin with a pick, now time to play a guitar with a bow.
ua-cam.com/video/4l3aqFaL7ZM/v-deo.html This guy already did it. Surprisingly works.
Not as S A C R I L E G I O U S
I've tried playing guitar with a bow and it sounded really bad.
Jimmy Page?
that would probably destroy your bow
I love you, but a little piece of me died watching this 🤣
I love you too, and I died inside the whole time recording this lmao

@@Musickal try play old instrument
Lol
Musick SIMP lol funny cool joke lol
That fact that he keeps saying the violin is a hard instrument and that I can play it makes me feel special
Club Penguin is Back! You should play some Club Penguin and get banned again.
I'm just gonna leave you to watch this video
ua-cam.com/video/-TAe2XrIIIY/v-deo.html
You should probably watch it before you keep commenting to play it.

Hey man, I've been playing for over a decade and a young professional and there are a few basic things that really help starting the violin. I know you mentioned that your partner Kayrina is a great violinist also but I would also love to offer some free digital lessons to you in addition to her as a long time fan of your content. Please do not hesitate to hit me up if that is the case! Everything that I'm about to type out would be much easier and quicker to explain over a live video instead!
Firstly, you want to make sure that the violin is in a comfortable position, with the shoulder rest lying across your shoulder and collarbone. You actually have the general angle of where the violin should go, although make sure that your left hand isn't raising the neck of the violin too high.
On the topic of the left hand - let your left arm naturally fall and flop including your hand and notice its naturally gently cupped shape. You should then swing this arm around gently anticlockwise from 6 o clock (facing the ground) to roughly 12 o clock to place your hand on the neck. You should gently let the violin sit on the side of your thumb instead of squeezing the neck of the instrument. Most of the time, the violin will be help up between your jaw and shoulder and therefore there shouldn't be any extra pressure between your left hand and the violin neck.
The bow arm is a similar story of naturalness. If you flop your right hand down, you will notice that your middle two fingers will naturally be slightly closer together than the index and pinky fingers - this will be your natural bow hold shape.
From this position, the middle two fingers and the thumb (which should be curled gently) will form a circle and you should find that the side of your thumb is in contact with your middle two fingers. This will form the base of your bow hold.
Now with the bow (which you can assist holding up with your left hand for now in order to position your right hand correctly) you can reform that initial shape once more but placing the same point the thumb was in contact with fingers now between the leather wrapping on the bow and the ebony heel (frog) of the bow with the middle two fingers falling over the stick to form our circle once more.
You then want to place your pinky finger on the segment one *behind* the top segment of the octagonal shape that is on the bottom of the bow. You want to keep this pinky relaxed and curled as it acts as a counterbalance to the weight of the stick - this will take a while to master so do not worry if the pinky slips often. Just make sure that you avoid straightening the pinky and tensing it.
Then slightly turn your wrist anticlockwise so that the second segment of your index finger is resting on the metal wrapping of the bow. You should now have an ideal bow hold where you can feel the weight of the stick in between your fingers without gripping it. Violin bows are typically between 58-62g and you should be able to feel that entire weight in your fingertips.
One of the most important things with the violin that you correctly identified is tone production with the bow. One of the best ways to start making a great sound is to just play some free open strings with the whole bow. Placing your bow on the A string near the heel, start your down bow (going outwards) whilst maintaining that bowhold and make sure that you naturally push slightly forward with your hand and wrist as you go out as well. In order to draw a straight bow parallel to the bridge, all of our joints work in tandem at different points in the bow in order to keep it straight.
With the up bow when you reach the tip of the bow, imagine that you're coming in with your wrist, almost as if there is a string attached to the top of your wrist and that it's being pulled up and in back towards the heel. The rest of your arm should naturally follow, allowing the friction of the bow against the string to resonate. This should all be done slow in order to gain a great deal of control throughout the entire bow.
Take my advice, coming from someone who’s played for five years:
•Use your elbow, rather than your entire shoulder to bow on the string
•Be sure to bow parallel to the bridge (The small wooden piece near the small tuning screws)
•The long black thing where the strings hang over is called the fingerboard
•Violins can change with the weather (ex. If it’s colder the strings will become out of tune)
•The bow hold should have four fingers rest on the end of the bow (the Frog). They should all rest on the second knuckles, the pinky stands rather than rests. The thumb is placed in a small gap between the frog and the stick of the bow, bent at a 90 degree angle. Finally, the index finger is placed a bit further from the rest of the other fingers, allowing to balance the pressure between it and the thumb so it doesn’t sound all scratchy.
If I missed anything, I’ll be sure to add it. Good luck Papa Merk!
As a violinist for about 9 years that is majoring in music performance, you have no idea how much this means to me 😭. Also you are very correct when you say it is a difficult instrument. It is especially hard to pick up at the beginning due to it's lack of ease of use and many variables. Compared to guitar it is more difficult seeing as you need amazing technique from right and left hand both to even get a sound out of it. Also there are no frets, so be prepared to be very out of tune until you are used to it. Although it's hard, learning it to a basic degree is very rewarding! As you can do many things on the violin that you cannot do on any other instrument. If you wish to begin learning the violin moderately well, I have some advice. Basics are your friend! Most new violin players will start with a song in mind and begin trying to learn how to play it as you would on a guitar, and sadly this will not work with the violin. A good way to work your way up there is to learn the basics, pretend you are making a delicious cake (end performance) first you need the ingredients. I advise first taking care of the most dangerous aspects of playing violin, and when saying that I mean the techniques that are the easiest to create bad habits for. For these techniques it is important to master first! Examples would be posture, how to correctly hold your bow (usually the most difficult, but also most importaint), make sure your left wrist is straight while holding the instrument, and learning the distances between half notes and whole notes with your fingers. There are more but I advise starting there. Then it is good to do what is important on all instruments, start with scales, maybe one string at first and finally to all strings. Once you can handle the instrument work on tone (making the sound non-scratchy and nice). Once you get there you are basically on your way to learning some music with practice! Other more advanced techniques such as vibrato, pizzicato (plucking), articulation, etc. Are nice to learn along the way. If you attempt this good luck! It would mean so much if you tried, but it isn't for everyone so no hard feelings if you keep it for when you are bored. Either way don't knock it until you try it and don't give up because it won't be easy until you have the basics down!
The fact that Eric played wake me up when September ends just had me screaming internally😂
This puts a giant smile on my face. I've been a fan of yours since I was 11 and I was obsessed with your videos, especially your Minecraft ones. I've been playing violin since I was 6 and it makes me happy to see you try violin
Tbh eric... theres no easy way out for the violin XD everything is difficult for the violin, or at least the way my professor makes me work. Bow hold, posture, the bows position on the strings, left hand fingers, pizzicato. Gotta make sure all of these are correct. Oh and then of course notes. Now remember all this while playing paganini caprice 24
''It's not the type of thing you can pick up an play''
This is very true, i bought one at a boot sale, took it out, everything proceeded to fall apart, neck piece, strings snapped when i used the worn long boi which then snapped, fret then came off and tension points then fell out, wood then proceeded to disassemble itself..
Hey man. There’s a couple things that you can do to help with the fingers and the bow usage. You can buy tape for the fingerboard from a local shop to mark off where your fingers are supposed to go. Then correlate those marks with the notes on the treble staff. You can also mark the center of your bow with the same red tape so you know where the middle is so you can play in the 3 sections, upper, lower, and middle, depending on the dynamics and articulation. Start off basic like with twinkle twinkle or a simple tune that you can get sheet music for. Then it’s all about your left hand wrist position and hand shape as well as your right hand bow hold and arm movement. The best way to learn these is by watching others so look up some videos and or performances. I love the instrument and it’s a great one to learn for anyone. Hope to see an update in a few weeks. Keep up the great content!
SUMMER HAS COME TO PASS 7 YEARS HAS GONE SO FAST WAKE ME UP WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS
Donovan Perez HERE COMES THE RAIN AGAIN
Definitely relatable!!
Sounds pretty good! For a start
quick little tips, put a little more or less pressure on the bow and push and pull a little faster with longer strokes to make it sound clearer, to make the bow less bouncy loosen it a little by twisting the knob on the end. hope this helps!
Best thing I can tell you as someone who plays violin and guitar. As well as cello and bass. Practice your bow hold a lot and try not to put so much tension on your fingers when holding the bow. Keep your hand relaxed. Kind of like a guitar pick. Also use fingerboard tape to tape off the notes.
I just wanna say merk I saw this in my recommended. I haven’t watched in in quite a bit. I just want to thank you for all the old cod videos, it’s all hitting me right now, just remembering you were pretty much the only UA-camr I watched. Thank you.
That was pretty good for the first time at you played little lamb song. :D I think I wouldn't be that good. ^^,
Do an updated guitar collection! :)
C'mon TwoSet. Watch this video. I know you wanna. Also, love all your channels Merk. Been watching for a while ^-^
Hey merk! Starting off memorizing the finger placement for the c major scale helps with muscle memory on the finger board. Hope this helps :)
I’d suggest you hold the bow with your thumb between what it is called a frog. It is the u shaped indent to the bow that you put your thumb in and put your pinky on the very end of the bow. But try not to put too much pressure with your pinky. And also when pizz-ing or pizzicato also known as plucking you want to make sure you put quite a bit of pressure on the strings with your fingers or else it will sound quiet and gross. I also really suggest that you get a shoulder rest for the violin because it makes it more comfortable and it elevates the violin a bit making it slightly easier to play. Also use the amber in the case called rosin to help stick the tiny horse hairs on your bow up to make it sound less squeaky and keeps the bow from sliding everywhere but also make sure you use a cloth rag or something to clean the excess rosin that may get left on your strings between the bridge and the string board. It keeps the strings from being ruined over time.
Oh my god my ears and the flashbacks are coming back from playing the viola from like 5 grade to my junior year of high school.
Mark Wood has a fretted electric Violin and this dude straight up and shred on Violin. Overdrive that and you're golden.
Twoset where you at?
Eric, upload here more.

Learning to play twinkle twinkle little star as a beginner really helped me. My biggest problem was fingering and my fingers would often roll or fall out of place making the sheep in a wood chipper sound. Sadly though Idk any advice that would make learning it easier but just learning anything new it takes failure to learn
I've been playing the violin for almost 10 years now. It's extremely hard to self teach, technique is VERY important. I know people who have been playing as long as I have who aren't much better than you were in this video, simply because they don't care about the little things. You basically have to have some sort of professional one on one instruction to learn it, I know kids who are very good with just how we we're taught in school. However, they are very talented musicians in general.
Watching this as a viola is amazing
add stickers on the fingerboard for easier finger placement with ur left hand. Also make sure the bow is tightened correctly and it gets much easier to play if you have music notes in front of you instead of freestyling
Tip- try to keep the palm of your left palm away from the fingerboard so that it’s not pressed up against it, and with your bow hand, move with your elbow instead of your whole arm, and curl your pinky finger at the end of the bow
Congrats you look more amazing my dude good job!!!!
This is the aftermath of someone who has listened to Fleshgod Apocalypse for the first time.
Hey ERIK I've been watching your content since the days of yore!! I've been playing violin for 10+ years until I had to stop due to an unfortunate accident. but I now play guitar. I was in your shoes I had NO idea how to play guitar. so I started with the bass because it had also had 4 strings. how I learned violin WAS holding it like a guitar but we had to "pluck" or "PIZZ" (HEHEHE) until we got the technique down. then after a month we moved onto the shoulder. I would say we didn't use the bow until 1 year after getting the technique of plucking the strings. boi did the calluses hurt. I played throughout high school and was in the local youth symphony I miss those days. I hope to meet you one day and tell you more. you keep up the good work man im happy for you!
Honestly that wasn't the worst attempt I have seen of someone playing violin for the first time. At least you got the basics of which side of your neck you are meant to place it and bonus points for not collapsing your left wrist like most beginner violinists do. Sounds like you have a reasonable sense of pitch which will help you.
If you are serious about getting better then I recommend:
1. Get a teacher (or at least a friend who is a decent violinist) and have regular lessons. There are so many things about violin that are awkward and unnatural (posture, violin hold, bow hold, bowing technique, intonation) and they are all things that you have to deal with as a complete beginner all at the same time to get any sort of tolerable sound before you can even think about anything more advanced. Bad habits are really easy to pick up with violin and can take YEARS to unlearn to try to avoid wasting your time later and get the basics right first.
2. Regular and structure practice. Even 15 minutes every day will see you improve much faster than being undisciplined about it (unfortunately you are an adult so no longer have a malleable child's brain and learning fine motor skills is harder).
3. Accept that it will sound awful for quite a while but don't be disheartened and try to find ways to make it fun and enjoyable (duets, playing with other musicians etc)
As a few pointers on you bow hold, looks like you have the right basic idea but your pinky needs to curve the opposite way and sit on top of the stick (and I can't tell from the camera angle but I suspect that your thumb is also locked out straight, it is really important that your thumb is curved inwards otherwise you have no flexibility in your wrist or fingers). Also I would move your whole bow hold a bit further down the stick towards the black leather bit so your pinky is not resting right on the nut. You can practise your bow hold with a pencil. You don't really grip the bow with your fingers, the bow should just hang from your fingers very loosely but this involves a lot of fine movement in your fingertips so you need to practice....a lot.
Contrary to what other people have commented, I would NOT recommend using any tape or dots on the fingerboard to mark where to place your fingers. You need to train your ear so that you can make very fine adjustments imperceptibly immediately after playing a note rather than just relying on muscle memory.
I’m actually surprised you didn’t use DISTORTION
Violin was the first instrument I played, and I started when I was about 7, played it for about 8 years now, and still can't really get the hang of it ♪♬ ♪♬ ^_^
You can put stickers on the fingerboard to find the notes because when I was a begginer it really helped.
This was such a fun wholesome video, not gonna lie, I loved it.
merk i love your videos and i’ve been watching you since 2014, keep doing what you doing, also make a whole channel about your love on violin jk lmao, also tell matt i say hi
Two set is gonna have a fun day
Relax your elbow. It’s all In the wrist and moving with a relaxed elbow really helps with bowing
imagine the name of the brand being "Stradivarius"
"I bought it at a local violin shop"
“I’m gonna play this thing with a pick”
You have discovered: The Mandolin
One really good tip is to just sound good and then you’ll sound good
Hi merkmusic I like your music videos and I hope there will be more
To fix bow bouncing loosen the screw, it’s the twistable thing at the bottom of the bow
I'm not skilled but I do know how to play. When I was learning in 6th grade I was the only new learner because everyone learned in 5th grade. And instead of learning the notes, I learned by numbers. Each finger placement on the string goes from 1-4 with index being 1 and pinkie being 4. And this is on each string. G string is below the bars and each note above is 1 number on your hand. So the note above G(not string) is played with your index finger on G string. And you cycle through with each string. Also if you want to know where those placements are on the string. You can get numbered stickers and place them under the strings and have a tutorial tell you where. They are specially designed for the instrument I think. My teacher did this for all the rental instruments
If it helps and you want to learn to play violin, you can put stickers on the neck to memorise where different notes are (e.g. on the G string, put a sticker on where the A would be then over time remove the stickers as you memorise where it is)
What i did when I was 3 and I learned (lol)is I put tape where the notes where so I knew where to put my fingers
Because I’m not getting out of quarantine anytime soon, I’ve been looking for things to do and watching these videos. So I’m just gonna buy a violin and hope for the best 😌
Surprisingly... that actually was not nearly as bad as I expected.
Can u make longer videos, I love your channel Erik
And I just watched where I can but violin, I haven’t played for years, so I belive I would play just like this 😭🖤
(Love this video)
Trying chords as a beginner that can’t go wrong
AHHHHHH MY EEEEEAAAAAARRRRRSSS
You should watch Two-Set Violin
Put tapes where your 1st and 3rd fingers would go in first position! That will really help guide your finger placement
he needs ling ling insurance
Ah yes thank you YT algorithm for only showing m3rk’s vids again
2:26 HuU- I'm not about this sing that
Get accustomed to the bow and then move to fingerboard. Once you get a feel for the bow and the angles of it, then it easier to focus on the fingers and getting them in tune. Taking it one step at a time is key. Hope you enjoy it, it’s a great instrument :)
*Sees violin video from Merk*
Yooooo... An instrument I know how to play!
My first 2 weeks of orchestra was spent learning to hold the bow, and the teacher wouldn’t let us touch our bows until he had us take a test on it
I would LOVE to see you use the violin as a sound effect on your COD videos
Cool.
Erik likes green day... my life is complete ❤️🥺
What we did to help with finding notes is only putting the 1st 2nd and 3rd finger positions with tape and over time taking them off - also posture is important
Use the centre of the bow, might reduce the bouncing
3:45 gave everyone who took orchestra in 6th grade bam flashbacks
as someone who has played for 8+ years I can say, this hurt to watch, but it was really fun LMAO
When you hold the violin make sure your left wrist isn’t pointing up it should be arched down
Might sample a bunch of Eric’s videos and make a banger 😅
for some reason i found it easier learning to play the violin which ive played for about 6 years than it was to learn guitar which i’ve played for about 2 years now. not sure why though
Never though I’d see Captain Price try to play a violin
the ibanez boi! glad to see you uploading again here this is the first vid ive seen since the channel's startin days and i kinda stopped gaming so to me you kinda fell off the face of the earth, you look so good!!!!!!! all of us were so worried about you back then and then you took a break i think idk its been a while, time to catch up on the channel ^-^
M3rk: *first time*
Stevei t: let me teach you
Twoset violin is a great violin channel Merk
im hella late but theres so much to unpack here-
as a violin player, i find this amusing XD
5:18 that literally sounds like the battlefield 1 trailer theme
I had to play can can for a school concert thing and I had to learn how to play violin and how to play can can in just little of 3 weeks with a few hours a week it was hard
Well first of dont press down on the bow so hard, second when you use the bow dont use your whole arm, use your forearm. I hope this helped
using a shoulder rest would help balance so your bow doesnt bounce so much. also adding bow rosen helps with making your bow movements smooth. fingers should arch and you dont need to press too hard to draw the notes. also your finger placements on the bow itself when u hold it could be better. your balance would be on your pinky. havent played very long myself but these were things that helped me play better. been watching the main channel for years now. keep making funny vids not just about cod but what you enjoy playing.
another tip! using ur thumb to craddle the neck of the violin lets you hold it up in the air with it resting on your palm so your fingers arch over
Would love to see a video of you playing a wind instrument for the first time
Can you show us all your guitars again? Any changes since last time?
It's actually just a hollowbody ukulele banj-itar.
Don’t leave the bow tightened when you’re done using it you have to loosen it when you’re done or your bow can go SNAP
basically all practice. learning the scales helps a lot to know where the sharps, flats, and naturals should go, G major is very helpful for that because it's mostly naturals except for F sharp (second finger on D string and first on E), it's a pretty good jumping off point. C major is all naturals but I find it a little trickier. With the bow, I think you should probably be holding it a little higher up the stick, only an inch or so should be good, it's a little hard to see. With your fingers on the bow, you want to put your thumb directly under the stick, I usually place it between the frog and the little pad thing (which is probably there for the thumb so maybe I'm doing it wrong.. oops) and then you want all of the other fingers to rest on top of the stick, I think that should probably minimize the bouncing. Hope this helps, honestly you should probably just ask karina how she learned.
Ngl, the 7 nation army play was actually kinda good
This video made my day
I play violin but not the best and I recommend looking at videos on how to play I didn’t want to but I did and it actually helped
Id love to see Kayrina play on here
Also when playing you have to have a straight back be on the edge of your seat and turn your body 30 degrees to the right
👍😁.. Same experience I have Bro
Ha man was about to bang out some green day on a violin
