The thing about this song is that it’s a story from beginning to end, so even if you nail the climax, it’s as important as the rest of the song. Absolutely love Sara Bareilles, she is a gem
this song doesn’t require the crazy high notes that people find impressive now. It requires pure, raw emotion. And that’s what makes this song so completely and utterly impressive. If you want to impress others with this song, focus less on technique. Focus on the emotion. Find how this song relates to that nagging feeling in the very depth of your soul that sits locked in the closet in the back of your heart. That’s how you can make this song impressive while sharing your story on the stage.
Kinda disagree about focus less on technical. You wouldn't want to hear totally strained voice rendition of this already emotional song. Jessie, Jeremy, and Alison sang this song with full emotion but still maintain great technique. And they didn't really oversang like the others, even though they did improvised some parts (well Jessie's excluded since she's the original cast). Their improvisation felt so natural while the others were kind of, just my opinion, a bit too much.
Her's is the ONLY rendition that fully captures the ANGER that I feel this song needs. Most convey the sadness, the softness - Alison conveys that deep-seeded anger. The anger from your BONES. It's incredible.
Yall are sleeping on Luke man, that kid has PIPES and he looks young too. But man all these singers are amazing and absolutely killed it. I think my favorite was Lucie
Morissette, WOW. Her tone, vibrato, dynamic, emotional delivery was just perfect. Lucie Jones, i love her vibratos and she sustained it perfectly Jessie Mueller, she really embodied the character. so emotional and so good
All of them are amazing but for me Jessie is still the one that gives me goosebumps. From the crescendo to the facial expressions to the body language she absolutely nails it.
Lucie Jones had such an awesome placement, really balanced nasal resonance. And love how she just slid up and resolved the phrase with that extended straight tone 👌
The song itself is already superb. Sara is truly a master in songwriting and is underratedly famous for her singing technic. Yes, her tone of voice is somewhat not very distinctive compared to other singers, but the fact that she can write, sing, and always has a different version from the recording version is showing how genuine and genius she is. I do love her since her EP before Love Song, tho.
Morissette's dynamic to this song is so amazing. She can go to the huge sound and flip to the quiet sound in an instant. She portrayed a perfect emotion to that song as well. I love Jeremy Jordan's version too.
I've seen several of these performances before. With this being said, I preferred Jordin Sparks, Morrisette, and Jeremy Jordan. Some of you guys might not think he can deliver this song as a dude, but his performance is awesome! He really gets into character. I saw a clip of Jordin doing this on stage, and that performance was better than this clip -- even though this one was quite good. She's good at getting into character as well.
1. Shoshana 2. Morrisette - Because she is a ridiculously talented vocalist! I love that she went down instead of up towards the end. A nice switch up, without losing emotion or projection. 3. Luke - only because he's male and hitting those notes and it sounded great!
My favorite is Shoshona Bean! She is incredible & when she performed that song in the studio, she was so connected that it was like she lived it. I also loved the vocal run that Jordin Sparks & Morrisette Amon did. I thought Morrisette was a little too growly at moments, but that long note with the run ending it was stunning. Lucie Jones was so emotional from the bit that I heard & I would love to hear that one in full. She has an absolutely gorgeous voice. I wasn’t crazy about the clip they grabbed of Jessie Mueller. I think she sings better than that clip. The one I really didn’t like was Thunk. I thought that clip sounded awful. It was pitchy & all over the place. Might have been an off day vocally, which I totally get, I have those days too, but I’m sure there has to be other clips that sound better than that one. Loved watching this as a whole though & getting introduced to other broadway singers that I may not have gotten a chance to hear otherwise.
Where's Catherine McPhee? She did it on Broadway and was amazing. Also, one could argue the Jessie Mueller was the original since she was the first one to sing it live on Broadway. Sarah B. didn't release her recording until after the cast album came out.
The best Two I’ve heard do it would be Joshua colley and the young lad called Adrian. They made you feel like they were actually going through the pain. The song should be performed, not sung
What I love about this section of the song is that you don't *have* to do a lot if you don't want to. You really can take it however you like and as long as you get the shape of it (and sing it well), you've got it.
This song is all about the passion and soul. I cry every time I hear Jessie belting it out on the soundtrack. Now I need to find Jordin's full version of that because omg chills!!!!!
Jordin Sparks was perfect with full of emotions...even my cat got the feels when she heard it...with Morisette she was full of emotions love and anger like ggrrrr
1:47 Jennifer Owens (best technically and similar to the original) 2:16 Jordin Sparks (a great improv) 4:31 Jessie muller (by far the best at sending the emotion) Honorable mentions: 3:02 Shosana Beans 5:17 Moreieseto Amon Jeremy jordans
even though this is the climax, the part in the song people expect to have the “most emotion,” that not what it really is. yeah, it’s the climax and it has big the long notes that every big broadway song has and it’s the big number in the show, but the thing is that every single word that is sung in this song carries SO MUCH. you can’t just give up on the low notes after you’ve hit the high notes because “you hit the big notes, hallelujah!” no. the word, sentence, song does not finish after you’ve hit the biggest note. it has so much emotion all the way through and if a performer doesn’t convey it ALL it doesn’t work. that’s why i love this song so much. it is such a STORY and there is so much told through it. the broken beginning which builds up to the anger and ends with an even more broken ending is GUT WRENCHING, but it only works if a performer gives it their all throughout the entire song.
alisson luff, jordan sparks, sara bareilles, adrian matthews and shoshana bean will always be my top 5 favourite versions with some real strong contenders right up there with them (jessie mueller, jeremy jordan, morissette etc)
Jeremy and shoshana kill me every time I can't I like the other versions but theres are breathtaking overwhelming heartbreaking give me all the types of emotions

I'd be absolutely blown away listening to any of them live (esp. as I can't carry much of a tune myself), but listening to them one after another, Lucie Jones just owns the whole thing through and through. She just carries you along on every note. Perfection.
Alison Luff has the best vocal technique out of all of them, but in terms of overall performance, Jessie takes the win for this one. Luke Islam is incredible!!
All of them were amazing but my opinion I still love Sarah's, she was the first one I heard and people already done lots of covers, I just think she doesn't put so many runs in or doesn't even try to show off, ^_^

Usually this song is meant for higher pitched songs ( I don’t sing so I have no idea what the term for it is ) and that was really impressive and didn’t sound like he just came up with it the night before. The fact that nobody is talking about JORDIN SPARKS is shocking
She had so much resonance and 2:30 gave me goosebumps!!!
Ikr, miss thing killed it.
I love that surprise run at the end! It's like a little parting gift.
There is a better performance of her with this song, I think it was an actual stage performance with the waitress clothes.
I instantly came to the comments to make sure someone else was covered in goosebumps the same way I was.
@@funkystyle7249 i watched that, I think it was on Broadway when she came back

A GEM!
@Freak Show no cause he is seriously the reason i started listening to this song in the first place
Yes!!! Sara Barielles and Allison Luff is HANDS down the best!!!
Shoshana Bean KILLED ME with that resonance. One of the best FOR SURE
Right. I was like 👏😮👏😮
Sho Bean is the QUEEN!
when saw Shoshana on Broadway doing it; you could hear a pin drop in the pause of the song after the note.
Absolutely, my favorite by far
right?? apparently one of my friends went to college with her!
All amazing but let’s be honest Jessie Mueller owns this song!
i agree!!!
Y E S!!!
Completely agree
THIS ^^^
Also. *Original* Broadway Cast should be referred to as Original Key. Not the pop album by the composer as Original.
Y’all sleepin on Adrian Mathews, that kid absolutely BODIED that

Adrian Matthews did it for me. That young man can sing his heart out. He' the only reason I've come to even listen to or like the song.
same
Sameee
Same. Hes the best.
Me too. No one ever reacts to his performance and it low key pisses me. OFF
He put his soul into every breath
Jeremy is the pregnant woman we never had.
😭😭
The fact that Alison Luff had such impeccable breath control over a note one semitone higher whilst SITTING DOWN
Her rendition is my absolute favorite

Alba Reche's version really made me appreciate the song 😭
hey bro listening her album "La Pequena Semilla"
And listen Alba reche 'la llorona'
I’m pretty sure Jessie Mueller was sick during that performance too so she killed it but they all sound great
Yall are sleeping on Luke man, that kid has PIPES and he looks young too. But man all these singers are amazing and absolutely killed it. I think my favorite was Lucie

I will never get over Adrian Mathews no matter how many times I hear it
luke’s will always give me goosebumps. his voice is so clear. much love to him. same to adrian. both such talented young men
omg i know luke! he’s amazing
The note wasn't the impressive part, it was the length of the note with breath and the add ons
SO Jeremy Jordan did do the song lower, but ended up hitting the same high note as the original. He ends on an A4.
All of them are amazing but for me Jessie is still the one that gives me goosebumps. From the crescendo to the facial expressions to the body language she absolutely nails it.
Yep. Absolutely agree.
Can we just appreciate all of these people like they’re all amazing, not a single one I cringed
The Thunk vocalist was pretty pitchy and was straining a lot. Made me cringe a bit.
I’m also surprised that Katharine McPhee’s version wasn’t shown in this video. I thought she was great too! I absolutely love her voice!
yes....me too
I was waiting for her to pop up

Her cover is the best for me🥰
Lucie Jones had such an awesome placement, really balanced nasal resonance. And love how she just slid up and resolved the phrase with that extended straight tone 👌
Wait- The original isn't Jessie Mueller's? It's even higher than Sara's one, but both are amizingly talented, not gonna lie.
Since sara wrote it i think most people consider hers to be the original version although the broadway one was released first i believe
Sara released her album prior to the musical coming out. It was so weird listen to the musical with the accents

Lucie Jones MURDERED this live, I was sobbin my eyes out. Still for me Jessie owns this song
It’s amazing that Alison Luff can have that much power in her voice while sitting down
Not really....trained singers know how to sit without compromising our breathing. She's perched more than she's actually sitting.
Jeremy Jordan is just incredible, but Shoshanna bean was also really good

I saw Sara Bareilles perform this live in London, and no one compares to her!
Morissette did not just 'attempt' the ending of the song, she bodiedddd it! 💘
Technically and emotionally proficient!!!
Morissette my god she smash that all singer 😅 the resonance, diction, emotion, high notes, breath control and the pronounciation just Perfect

Jenniifer Owens had a lot of support in her voice, I like how even if it´s the same key her voice adds character to the perfomance.
