JSX VS 5150 High Gain Comparison

  • I had repaired a couple of Peavey amps and since I test everything out thoroughly before it's sent home I thought I would put these two amps through their paces and A/B their sounds together.
    The 5150 has 6L6GC tubes and JSX has EL34's. Overall I don't consider the output tubes to be a major factor in tone on these amps as the gain and saturation really comes from the preamp design. I don't believe you will hear a big difference unless the amps are turned WAY up and both of these amps have more than enough volume and headroom.
    Both amplifiers are mic'd up with Shure SM57's going through two 4x12 speaker cabinets loaded with Celestion G12T-75's and Vintage 30's.

    This is how a comparison is done. Same riffs, same guitar, same cabs, same mics, back to back. I have a JSX, great amp, really clicked with me first time I heard it. And obviously you can't go wrong with a 5150 haha!

    Nice playing, man! Your riffs remind me of some Gary Holt mixed with Vader. Also, with having previously owned and gigged both of these amps, I feel like the crunch channels on both amps would be far better suited for the heavier and chunkier stuff, albeit maybe with the gain a bit higher. Still sounds great on the lead channels though!!
    I really like the way the T75s sounded with the JSX more than the V30s (which is what I used to play my JSX through). But, I bet a T75 and a V30 in X pattern would sound pretty damn good with either amp also. They sound like they'd pair well together in the same cabinet, at least to my ears.

    It sounded more like a speaker comparison than an amp comparison. The playing and the tone out of the amps is very consistent. Having owned amps based on the JSX and the 5150 ii, I think they can both sound like each other but the JSX has a bigger range of sound, whereas the 5150 has three good sounds, and thats it, but its hard to screw up. whereas the JSX has that cocked wah sound and aggressive mids that you gotta like or deal with.
    I like em both with greenbacks or similar (hellatone 25s to be precise).

    Digging it. These V30s sound funny to me though. I have a couple of V30 cabs with these amps and I don't hear that character. Might be mic placement. The T75s sound more like I'm used to hearing them sound. Quite good but a bit fizzy.

    • @purgasound
      @purgasound  4 роки тому +4

      I can agree. Mic placement plays a HUGE role in how the speaker will sound when recorded. It's hard to find a common placement for both since they are so different. I placed each mic just outside of the dust cap which on each speaker will be a different distance from the center of the cone.

Id go far as to say they both sound like theyre missing something on their own tho but all this tone stuff is subjective anyway. Depends alot on mic and placement too along with cab construction

    5150 all day... I've got a made in USA 6505+ and it's an amazing beast. But I gotta say... (and people can say Whatever they want, wont change what my perception of great tone is....) that I am absolutely NOT... I repeat, NOT a fan of ANY British voices speakers. I do not like a celestion... IMHO, there is an Eminence speaker out there that can be put up against any Celestion any day of the week, and it won't just get the job done, itll do it SO MUCH BETTER!! I used to play Vintage 30's (and they were made in England, not the "Celestion International" made in China ones that are made under license for Celestion in China, but are still nothing more than knockoffs... they are just "official" knockoffs, if that can even be a thing).... ANYWAY, I digress... As I said, and YES, I SAID IT.... Eminence USA makes speakers that are just BETTER than the competition. I'm not playing a speaker just because it has some name that so-called purists have judged to be the only thing "cool" enough to run an amp through. Folk should just be honest and say, "I play Celestion because it's the brand every guitarist knows, and they are overpriced, and put in EVERYTHING, and because the name is cool..." They are only known because they are forced down our throats in almost every stock amp you can buy and by the time people spend that kind of money on them, they accept that it's what must sound good because it's what every amp company puts in their higher end stuff, along with the fact that they spent too much money on the cab they got and dont want to spend more to put better speakers in a cab that came with "the good ones" already in there....
    I tell you from experience though... If you buy into that hype, you are just selling yourself WAY WAAAAAY short. As far as tone goes in terms of speakers and cabs, the BEST decision I ever made was when I pulled all the vintage 30s out of my 4x12 Mesa Recto cab and installed Eminence speakers instead. 2 Swamp Thangs and 2 Texas Heats in an X pattern. Just wanted to try something different to see what was availible out there and what I found out was that I had been on the hype train myself for FAR TOO LONG. Those speakers in that cab made the HUGE sound of that 6505+ open up to become even more huge (which I never even considered as a possibility, because it was already amazing) But it was like, when I made that swap, SO MANY THINGS CHANGED and it sounded so great that playing through my half stack became an EXPERIENCE again, not just jamming n practicing! It got me inspired, and the difference just opens doors you never knew were even there. Actually it BUILT NEW DOORS to open rather, because they really weren't there before. Between the added headroom, the articulation, and response on every frequency, the low end CHUG, and on and on.... The Eminence set, from the time I plugged into them the 1st time, blew the best speakers in the world of guitar's doors RIGHT OFF! At least what I certainly THOUGHT to be the best, all my life until that day. I went and ordered another one of each of the Eminence speakers to put in my smaller Rectifier 2x12 cab that same night, and they are still all there to this day and I wouldn't put a V30 (Made in England or otherwise) back in their place if my life depended on it. I might go to Guitar Heaven, but at least my sons would inherit some cabs that sound better than 95% of the rest of em out there!
    Anyway, GREAT VIDEO!! But throw some Eminence speakers in the mix next time and maybe with your platform, a whole community of guitarists can have their eyes and ears opened up 😁😁😁

      In this video they indeed sound bad. In person they are still pretty present in the upper mids but when playing in a band you realize right away that those frequencies are the ones you need when other speakers get drowned. V30 are amazing when the amp is dialed for them.
