I have this machine, and you identified the leak that was stopping the washes before I even took the my 18 year old machine apart. A bit of amalgamating tape is working well 😊 Muttley medal for you!

You make great videos. I watched it @ 0.25 speed on how to fit the seal, thank you.

This happened to my w5748 stainless steel model that I very much loved. Been replaced with a lg direct drive but I do miss the Miele felt solid but no one would fix the drum spider that started to fail.

Thesey has asked "Is the door seal inner (bit that clamps seal to the outer drum) spring tightened with a screw clamp or just spriing pressure could I ask?"
Answer: It is not just spring pressure, there is a screw/bolt clamp thing that tightens up that spring - you have to undo it.

@@micswashereiguess its a Miele W1 Selection. So far, so good. The TwinDos seems ok too - its a bit weird not having to put washing liquid into the machine each time!

Very interesting couple of videos. Sounds like a catastrophic failure instead of the bearings getting noisey / sloppier with wear over time. It could be the rear `spider' that is attached to the drum possibly? A bit of a shame you didn't investigate further but agree that after 15 years hard use it's time for a new machine. You said that you've replaced it with a Miele W1 but could you advise the model number since, as far as i can tell, all Miele washing machines are designated `W1'.
N.B. The least expensive Miele machines use a fiberglass reinforced plastic material `GlaronK' for the outer drum instead of stainless steel and the weights on the cheaper machines are not cast iron. I don't know whether the internal (wetted) `spider' (that is attached to the back of the drum) is or is not made of the same material regardless of model, it may well be made of a metal more liable to corrode on the least expensive models.

Hi there, just curious do you do any washes above 30’C?

We mostly did 30’C washes with that machine. Why do you ask?

@@jolyontidmarsh1759 Ok, it looked like on the video that the drum support (also known as the drum spider) had broken judging by how much the drum could be moved up and down. It’s 3 metal arms at the back of the drum that are bolted to the actual drum and by doing low temperature washing e.g. at 30’C this causes the spider to rot as the detergent can’t be fully dissolved in water at 30’C so the detergent sticks to the spider and it slowly rots the spider causing it to break thus leading to a new washing machine the residual detergent can also encourage mould growth and unpleasant smells. This can be alleviated by doing non delicate clothes on 40’C. Bed linen, towels and nappies on 60’C and it will also disinfect and kill any bacteria on the fabrics and clean the machine at the same time, if you do this and leave the door slightly open after every cycle you shouldn’t get any mould on the door seal or unpleasant smells in the machine. It will also probably say in the manual for your new washing machine under maintenance about doing maintenance washes if you regularly wash at low temps but if you do hotter washes anyway for what I’ve said above you probably won’t need to do this and your washer will probably last longer and wash better. I don’t mean to come across as a nag, I’m just trying to save you from buying another washing machine 👍

@@HB204 that’s really useful. I knew about the mould issue and that occasional hot washes were a good idea, however I’d never have guessed about the spider corrosion problem. We live in a hard water area, so maybe that made the problem worse?

@@jolyontidmarsh1759sorry for the very late reply. I’ve got the same model off facebook to repair and wanted to watch some videos on it, clicked onto this video and saw my old comment lol.
Hard water could play a part in the corrosion of the spider , however, the lime scale clogs the machine up and coats the heating element basically making it work 2x harder and increasing (not by a huge amount though) energy consumption. Either use Calgon or a tablespoon of soda crystals - these soften water.
Washers in hard water areas normally benefit from a monthly maintenance wash on 60 or 90 with NO CLOTHES using citric acid, this dissolves limescale.
You can use citric acid etc if you do have soft water, but as long as it goes in a hot wash to clean out is the main thing.
In bad cases of limescale or smells and mould, just keep doing hot washes frequently. It should sort itself out eventually.
