i played guitar for the first time 10 years ago when i was 10, and since then, the only thing i knew were open chords and barre chords, up untill the last 2 years, since i started listening to john mayer, which lead to me going back and listening to hendrix, SRV, eric clapton, bb king and ever other musician that ive missed out on, he is the reason im starting to learn guitar on a serious level, other than just knowing how to play campfire guitar which i hated doing

The theory breakdown on this was awesome--and needed for such an insane transposed cover. Loved how you're just as fired up as many of us about this song
Michael, John's acoustic solo "Neon" that he opens up his Where The Light Is DVD is crazy good, im sure youve heard it but definitely would be a great one to watch you break down!
I can't tell you how often I keep telling people that John Mayer is legit genius on guitar. The guy can play any genre of music and be the best on stage doing it. On a side not. This was the first time I watched one of your videos and I was extremely impressed at how well you went through the breakdown. You got a new subscriber . Should add the Mayers best quality when he plays is his ability to bend anything to perfect pitch of what he wants not what people think should play next. The rakes are insane . If you ever check out when he does who did you think I was with triplets in the middle is insane.
I know you are a guitar guy, but as a bassist, I’d love to see a collab with Scott’s Bass Lessons breaking down the bass while you break down the guitar. It’d be cool to hear about how the bass outlines the chords and moves in and out of the guitar parts. Love the channel!
I have no idea most of the time what Michael is talking about...but I'm still fascinated. Anytime you can break down great music to this level, it's like watching Carl Sagan explain a Black Hole. I don't understand...but it's amazingly interesting. Ha.
I think the cool thing about the rakes you talk about around 16:23 is that he does kind of a Mark Knopfler-ish fingerpicking rake if I recall correctly. Just plucking with his thumb, index, middle, and maybe ring (?) finger in rapid succession.
I was never much of a fan of John's Pop songs, but I love his blues playing. Then I find out that the Blues has always pretty much been his foundation and SRV his biggest influence to play. Go figure. He's a genius. I wish Jonny Lang would get back to his roots, as he's another blues tour de force.
As a HUGE Mayer fan, his blues has always had a presence in his pop music. It’s just the recorded versions downplay it but the second the man gets on stage even “Body is a wonderland” becomes a fucking classic.

Great video! This is a great illustration of what a difference volume makes with those little fall offs and trills. The sound you have to fight to get at low volume is one you have to actually control and limit when you're loud. All about that dynamic range.
Love the format of watching all the way through then goin back for the analysis, keep it up dude ♥
While I may not be a fan of all John Mayer’s music. I am a fan of guitar playing, guy is so diverse and always has a great sound.
Yes man! This is a classic Mayer video, continue the John Mayer stuff please🙏🏻
I like how they have Paul's signature on the SE models now.
i played guitar for the first time 10 years ago when i was 10, and since then, the only thing i knew were open chords and barre chords, up untill the last 2 years, since i started listening to john mayer, which lead to me going back and listening to hendrix, SRV, eric clapton, bb king and ever other musician that ive missed out on, he is the reason im starting to learn guitar on a serious level, other than just knowing how to play campfire guitar which i hated doing
Not even the best version...him at red rocks killing this song is still one of the best covers I’ve ever seen...amazing talent!
Watched your video of Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake doing Tennessee whiskey, which is one of my all-time favorite songs. That led me to watch this video. Believe it or not, I’ve never heard John Mayer. I, of course, have heard his name but never his music. I didn’t know whether to scream or cry. I love your content. Thank you for sharing what you so obviously love and know so well. I am telling my friends about your channel. Thank you ever so much. Many blessings to you.
Awesome and thanks so much!!
Your style of teaching is making me want to pick up that guitar again. Thanks Michael!
The theory breakdown on this was awesome--and needed for such an insane transposed cover. Loved how you're just as fired up as many of us about this song
8:21 "...And it creates that feeling of gravity" I see what you did there Michael ;)
Finally some mayer! Great stuff man! Much love from the Philippines.
This is the song and performance that made me a Mayer fan
This video was incredible. Thanks for the breakdown. Have you looked at Covered in Rain by Mayer yet?
I know you are a guitar guy, but as a bassist, I’d love to see a collab with Scott’s Bass Lessons breaking down the bass while you break down the guitar. It’d be cool to hear about how the bass outlines the chords and moves in and out of the guitar parts. Love the channel!
I have no idea most of the time what Michael is talking about...but I'm still fascinated. Anytime you can break down great music to this level, it's like watching Carl Sagan explain a Black Hole. I don't understand...but it's amazingly interesting. Ha.
i love your comment. I feel the same!
I think the cool thing about the rakes you talk about around 16:23 is that he does kind of a Mark Knopfler-ish fingerpicking rake if I recall correctly. Just plucking with his thumb, index, middle, and maybe ring (?) finger in rapid succession.
Poor Freddie, the forgotten King, he covered this song even....COME ON!!!
Not forgotten by me!!
Wood Rookie fantastic artist.
@@Guitargate right on brother! Freddie was a straight up blues killer!
Freddie King was that man!!!
Freddie was the best. So much power
That tone and that mix is just otherworldly.
Hey Michael! Can you react to Can't Wait for Perfect by Bob Reynolds? Mark Lettieri did an amazing solo on that song!
Yes!
Please do!
Yes please.... holy smokes that solo is 🔥🔥. I know you’re all about the “band” and Bobs band is also 🔥🔥
THIS! The Lettieri solo in particular is so good!
Which version?
I love this video so much! Great analysis!
