I used treats, clicker, and dog whistle to do recall training with my ferrets. I got 100% recall after six weeks of training. They knew their names too, but whistle was for long distance recall.
I have a dog that I use the kiss noise with daily, and snap for commands daily. Trying to think of another sound I could do haha. Wonderful video though :) Doing this with my three sounds like a long journey but I’m optimistic for my boys!
Another great clip Courtney. Thanks for taking the effort to put it together. I only have one comment. In regards to the laser pointer. The ferret sight colour spectrum of red/blue means that some lasers are invisible. I have tried this using red & Blue lasers with little success. Perhaps green or purple may work better. Just a thought. Cheers 😁😁😁
Thank you so much for your videos. They have helped me so much ❤ I wish I had access to a good breeder to get a healthy, big, beautiful boy like yours. All mine have been Marshall farm babies and its such a struggle with their health 😞 I love your suggestion on recording your call back sound. That is brilliant!
Simon is so cute and well behaved! 😍 I'm a new subscriber, and I'm really enjoying your videos. My family just adopted two baby ferrets, and they're so much fun! I can't wait to try out some of your great training tips. Where did you purchase the salmon oil and syringe?
Thank you for this video, and for the ideas for the deaf ferrets, I'm always so worried about our deaf girl when she goes to sleep some where and I can't find her.
Great ideas, we will definitely start doing this! Of our six ferrets we have a male that is profoundly deaf and has Waardensburg so signs are difficult because he does the waardy head movements constantly and its hard to capture his attention, plus he tends to ignore the signs he knows more often than not. We have a female with some hearing loss but we think we can find something in the range she can hear, thank you for the recording suggestion, if we record it we know it will always be the same and work for her as well as the others. We are just at a bit of a loss for the male, we thought about vibrations and we already use knocking on the floor to get his attention as he can be easily startled, but it wouldnt work outside. He wont look at us reliably for a sign to do it, maybe a smell, but once again if we were outside, would it get to him in time? If you happen to think of a solution please let us know, and thank you again. P.S. your boy is adorable!
your videos have been such a help for me! i’ve had my ferrets for about 2 years. unfortunately it’s difficult to train them with positive reinforcement since they don’t like treats. what would you recommend for ferrets that aren’t food motivated/ don’t like treats?
Thanks!! Keep trying to get them to try new things. I had to make Simon try salmon oil several times and now he loves it! If I didn’t put some in his mouth he wouldn’t have tried it lol. Otherwise, praise and regular food works too, just not as effectively. If you use regular food, make sure to train when they are a little hungry (after a long nap)
Hi Courtney, I love your channel! Do you have any thoughts on the best size/type of syringe to use for the salmon oil? I just started emerg recall training, but my syringe might be too big. I pushed gently on the plunger and doused my poor ferret in the face! Maybe I need to put the salmon oil on my hand instead? I am worried she is going to be wary of the syringe from now on! Thanks so much!
Thank you!!! I use a 1cc syringe usually and just give a little each time. You can also just put a couple drops on your finger/hand. Just make sure not to give too much while training (too much can give them runny poo). Also keep an eye on the expiration date of the oil. I never finish a bottle before it expires which is the downside to using it.
@@TheTrainedFerret I will definitely try a smaller syringe. As for expiry dates, I didn 't even know salmon oil had an expiry date. Yikes! Thank you for telling me that. As for runny poops, my ferret always has that. She has been tested for parasites with 2 different tests but the vet has never been able to uncover why. But I will make sure not to overdo it with the salmon oil. Thanks again!
Hi! I have 2 female ferrets and I really want to train them to do this. I've had one for a year and just got another one two months ago. The one I got recently doesn't even seem to like treats at all yet so I have no idea what to do about her, I've tried to give her treats so many times and she just walks away barely even sniffing it. My older one likes regular soft treats and cat dental treats (her favorite) but i'm not sure I can use those as positive reinforcement because I don't know if its bad for her to have so many at one time (even if I break them up). I was wondering if you had any suggestions for treats that can be given in bigger quantities because they are extremely picky. They don't like raw meat or salmon oil or anything of the sort (maybe I just need to get them to keep trying it). Thanks!!
I love this. I have always taught a recall sound. I have 2 kit girls that I am teaching now. What salmon oil do you use? I am having a hard time finding a PURE one. Thanks
God bless Simon and his mom!

Thanks for thinking about deaf ferrets when making the video! ❤️

Long range ferret recall is something I didn't know I needed in my life, but I definitely do.

Thanks! It’s Iceland pure salmon oil. I show it in the “what do you need to train an emergency recall” section.
I just bought some after watching this. It's on Amazon :)
Ok perfect. How is Grizzlies? I have heard they are also good
