When I was a kid, my Dad always had me work beside him when we updated our home. My job was always pulling up staples and nails. I learned so much from those projects. Your kids will love the memories you create with them too.
Love this comment... I too, helped my father with many house/car projects throughout my childhood. I credit those projects to my confidence now in taking care of reasonably doable house fixes and maintaining my car. All my friends come to me for advice and help. I grew up rebuilding decks/roofs, installing windows/insulation/ drywall, creating pathways/landscape and working under the family cars. I miss being my dad's right hand/tool finder/runner... 🥰💜
My parents divorced when I was 8. My dad was/is a DYI kind of person...I ended up living with mom. I missed out on so much stuff...you're really lucky. Tell your dad about my post! :-)
Same. I remember when my parents got their first house I was always helping my dad scrape paint, rip out an old chimney, paint rooms. They weren’t the most fun days back then but now they’re some of the best memories with him
I hate to get emotional about this but thank you so much for these videos. My father is in horrible shape due to cancer, and will not be able to teach me all the things he hoped to teach me. Therefore, it is a blessing to have channels such as yours where I can soak up all the knowledge and share it with my dad. We bond, learn and grow together as his journey might be coming to a close. Thank you for allowing me to learn, grow, bond and share it all with my dad
@Just a new guy Not here for you Oh right, I was thinking of doing the exact same thing and I was going to ask if removing the carpet and replacing it with timber boards made the room significantly colder if so, what you did to fix it
You brought back some memories for me. My dad and grandfather laid carpet for a living . My brothers and I worked for them in the summertime taking out the old pad, carpet, and staples.
I know the termites are discouraging but just remember you are the blessing that this house and the future owners needed. I would be so relieved to know you flipped my house bc i would know that everything was done right and in good conscience. You are a blessing to all of your future homeowners, there are sooooo many " house flippers" that are scammers. Who just slap up some new paint and carpets and call it a day. Can't wait to see your finished work of art!😁
Joel, you came right to the point and made the job seem easy, which is great. But you also included the not-so-nice parts in the bloopers, which show that things are rarely as easy as you want them to be. Thank you for that. Also, I love your logo. Please tell us what it means and how you came up with it. I love the channel.
I live in an apartment in Toronto. I will likely never own my own home, but I’m obsessed with watching your channel because it feels like helping my dad do work and learning while doing it. Thanks for the lessons 🙂
Joel u are in your element when u are doing this. You remind me of Tom from this old house. They were teaching and showing people the safest way to do different projects.
I’m sooo glad you have this channel! My husband is crafty like you but I want to start being more crafty and you are such an amazing teacher! Love you guys! ♥️
We have just started remodeling our home we bought a year ago ourselves, well my husband anyway! I have watched since Lincoln was born and now my husband is so glad your making these kinds of videos for him to learn from! Your home in our inspiration for our remodel!
I love that i can comment here i pray that everything will work out with this house. You guys are going to make it beautiful. Also pray there are no living termites.
I love that you started a channel of your own! 👌 I have seen it for a long long time how you allways work, work, work around all your family. I allways see that as such a big testament of love, the way you selflessly do so much for everyone around you ❤ I know Bonnie love you a tonn, and I am happy she see how you show your love for her, your kids, and everyone around you, by helping and maintain all, and everything so life can be easy, safe, and good 🙏 I'm also so happy you bring your kids along, and teach them about all the stuff you do, then they will grow up being awesome familyoriented loving grown ups like yourself! Stay safe❤ Love from Marte in Norway 🇳🇴
This kind of channel is so helpful for those of us who would like to learn but don’t have a way to do so. I’m so excited to see what else you show us; this knowledge will be helpful for so many!
Thank you so much. I want to remove carpet from one of my room and epoxy the floors. This was such a great video. Simple and straight to the point. Minimizes the overwhelm that I feel after watching more lengthier videos. Thanks again.
Great job. Very informative and educational. I am going to get my grandsons to watch these videos so they can learn how to do repair jobs around the house. You are a very good teacher, Joel.
Brings back memories of me ripping up our carpet at our old house! My husband always doubts my “handyman” skills but I got this. 💪🏼 I was SO sick of the carpet as my dogs started marking the few places where the previous homeowners’ pets had marked. It wasn’t bad at first but after so many cleanings and it doing nothing but getting worse it was time for them to go! Moved all the furniture myself and went to town yanking out nasty carpet (that really wasn’t very old but pets ruin things 🤷🏼♀️) just to discover beautiful original hardwood floors in our 100+ year old house! I was winging it the whole way but did basically everything you did in this video. Thankfully I didn’t have to remove any doors but I did leave us big rolls of carpet to maneuver and get out of the house! Oops 🤷🏼♀️😂
Part time single mom (hubby travels a lot for work) and you make everything seem manageable and do able for some one who has no idea how to even use a hammer correctly. Thanks for branching out and starting your channel!
Great video Joel and whoever buys from you will know you of all people will of done everything the right way without cutting corners to just flip a house. Your honesty is so wonderful to see. I'll pray that you don't come into anymore new challenges like termites. Love your channel, Hi Bonnie :)
I am typically not into home improvement... BUT I FEEL LIKE I AM JOANNA GAINES when I watch these videos! THANK YOU “Joel Hoellein from the Bonnie Hoellein UA-cam channel”!
Thanks man. I already knew most of this. But it’s still nice to see people my age making it happenZ keeping the faith. Don’t need no stinking contractors!! Wait I am my own contractor!!!!! Wish I where rich lol
there must be some way one can cut the carpet with a guarantee that he isn't making lines in the floor beneath? One way is to start off by pulling out the corners of the carpet first, then pull the carpet off and cut the carpet when it is off the floor.
Because of you joel i am going to epoxy shield my garage floor to make it glossy and clean ! never done anything like it before but i am finally ready to do a project on my own !
Super glad I found your channel. I'm looking at buying a home at the end of the year to renovate and resell. I currently own a hammer and box knife :D But I will end up inheriting many many maaaaaany tools from my dad who has more than anyone I know
Great stuff. Thanks, brother. I just watched a video prior to yours...a guy used a shovel to pry-up the tack strip...it looks pretty easy. You may want to try that once or twice. I don't have a shovel or a prybar...and I can't find my hammer!
Thanks for the very useful video. Just about to rip out my carpet and turn one of our rooms into a gym with rubber flooring. BTW. I have those exact gloves and they're awesome. They're comfortable and feel like they were worn in without being worn in lol. Thanks again.
Hi. Thank you. Just watched to see if there were any tips. I did one large room by myself and it was a nightmare. Did part of another. Started on dining room this weekend. I have been ripping up small section... holding it up and cutting midair. Takes forever and is cumbersome. I may try and cut flat on the ground....but I am going back to hardwood floors which are already underneath. I have actually used a staple remove on some. tacks and pliers on others as well as flathead screwdriver and hammer on others. No matter what it is a long nasty job. Thank you for the video.
Wow ... ripping up the carpet into strips was brilliant! Thank you for these simple tips and also for the links ... I’m always looking for durable gloves.
been wanting to get new carpet or hardwood for a while but felt overwhelmed at the thought of tearing out our carpet you made it look somewhat simple thanks!

I'm a carpet layer and I thought I'd watch someone else do this for a change haha, good job mate.

Thank you so much. I try to show the right way to do things, but I have to do it three or four times before I figure it out. I like the bloopers to.
Logo are tool symbols. A T square & not sure correct name of other. Used for measuring.
Thanks, Joel, you're teaching this old girl (67 years) some good tips. God Bless.

Seriously, I keep checking back thinking maybe I didn't get the notification 😂
I love the outtakes! So fun! Joel you make handiwork so approachable. As a woman I have felt intimidated to even try. But now I feel like I can.
Thanks man. I already knew most of this. But it’s still nice to see people my age making it happenZ keeping the faith. Don’t need no stinking contractors!! Wait I am my own contractor!!!!! Wish I where rich lol
Recently tore my bedroom carpet up to find beautiful hardwood floors underneath, the tack boards are the final thing I have to pull up!!
One thing I advise you to be mindful of when cutting through carpet is potentially damaging nice hardwood floors underneath.
there must be some way one can cut the carpet with a guarantee that he isn't making lines in the floor beneath? One way is to start off by pulling out the corners of the carpet first, then pull the carpet off and cut the carpet when it is off the floor.
Good video! Keep them coming!
Great job! I’m about to do the same right now. Thanks!
Because of you joel i am going to epoxy shield my garage floor to make it glossy and clean ! never done anything like it before but i am finally ready to do a project on my own !
