Very good advice! Not many people would think rolling carpet up will damage the paint on their wall.

I worked for at&t for 30 years, in repair for 18 of those years. This is where we got a lot of our repair calls, when people would cut carpet out. The phone jack wires were often run in the gap under the base molding on top of the carpet. Sometimes we'd put in new jacks before the carpet went in so the wire would be under th he carpet between the wall and the tackless strip. They'd cut the wire or nick it when the carpet was cut out. Probably less of a problem now with the use of cell phones.

3:42 That is exactly the reason I'm watching this video! Thank you for the demonstration! Now I'm more confident about pulling out the carpeting myself in order to save money on my hardwood floor installation by a contractor! I'll be putting in floating laminate flooring. I'm hoping to have the contractor install the baseboards and the edges while I do all the middle portions myself to try to save even more money!

  • @hj8607

How often does the baseboard on your jobs need to be removed . I am not a carpet installer , but in many years of redecorating (professionally ) I don't recall ever needing to pull out the baseboard . (I would cut back the carpet to do better finish on base boards , letting the carpet people pull the bulk )

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  4 роки тому +1

Depends what you are doing . In this case the flooring is changing to hardwood so the baseboard is too low and needs to be installed higher after the hardwood if completed .

Only time you paint subfloor is if it absorbed pet urine. Then you can prime it with Shellac primer so it doesn't smell anymore.

Before you roll up your pad run yoir 6in scraper under tye pad and kik up all the staples .....
Then roll the pad with the staples in it ... toss your pliers in the truk..
1/4 the time easy ...... and 95% less mess to sweep up ......
Little pieces of pad dont sweep easily ....

The carpet looks to be in great shape. Such a shame to rip it into pieces just to throw in a landfill. I would prefer it if you removed it in full pieces and then donated it to Habitat for Humanity so someone else could us that perfectly good carpet and underpad.

If the carpet is reusable that is a good idea, but when it is not there is no point.

Be careful when cutting the carpet if you have a hardwood floor not just subfloor. Previous owners put carpet down. I found clear solid oak under the carpet, didn’t want the carpet and just refinished the oak.

1st tip wear work boots or at least shoes. 2nd tip pull the carpet up and fold it over, carpet cuts easier from the back side.

Old post, but dropping the disposal fee, labor, and any other small fees like consultation, shipping, and gas can save a few hundred.
Smart thing to do is drop $40-$60 and 30-60min between tear up and install to use a primer like KILZ to treat the floor underneath. Anti-mildew/mold/urine barrier (pets kids etc), save you from replacing floorboards, or worse concrete on next replacement.

depends on the carpet. If its like this it will be basically the same . If its a foam backed carpet the foam may stuck to the floor and need to be scraped off.

Back in the 1990s I had to remove carpet from most of my house. I used a Ginsu kitchen knife to cut the capet into small pieces to put into garbage bags. The carpet had a heavy back. I was looking for your Pex videos and saw this one. It reminded me of the Ginsu Knife idea I had way back then before internet videos. You do a great job on your videos. Thank you.

    • @HouseImprovements

Not always. Sometimes you can pull the carpet from under them and the installer can tuck the new carpet edge under again. Ask your installer.

If you use a stand up floor scraper with the blade installed backwards (so it’s dull and not sharp, keeping it from biting into the subfloor) you can glide over the floor with it knocking most of the staples out without the need to pull everyone of them out individually, you will still have a few to pull out with pliers but it makes it go so much faster.
