The Gertrude Baniszewski story is so crazy. Basically a real-life Cinderella's stepmother who succeeded. I heard when word got out she was going to be released from prison early it caused such a public uproar that she went right into witness protection until she died of cancer in the '90s.

I was a toddler when Sylvia Likens was murdered, but my parents remember it vividly. My mom said the whole city wanted Gertrude to receive the same punishment she gave Sylvia.

I'll never forget what happened to Sylvia Likens. That's a story that you really don't forget. It's really sad.
    Edit: I didn't expect so many reactions to my simple comment, so I'll beef it up a little more xD;
That poor girl didn't deserve to be tortured and killed and it infuriates me that some of the people behind it didn't get the appropriate punishment.
I will NEVER forget about her.
Her suffering and her story will forever be inside my head.
It shows how horrible people can be because of jealousy and hatred and how cruel people can be to someone who did nothing wrong.

Honestly in Puerto Rico where i'm from what Sylvia did is considered acceptable parenting. Children and spouses die weekly due to family members abusing them for any number of reasons. And I come from a family that practices child abuse for generations. I refuse to fall in love and start a family since I genuinely fear that I would kill my wife and children in a fit of rage. Something that my family does not understand or wish to understand calling me lazy and girly even though they were the ones who chased off and nearly killed my father who had a wife and kids on the side when he seduced and impregnated my mother.

@@mammyewok And like I said in Puerto Rico there's been 500 reported cases of similar situations this year alone. News reporters are essentially being told to raise awareness that murder is wrong regardless of gender and age. Because like I said beating up women and asserting dominance on those of a lower station is a cultural sign of masculinity. And its passed down thru generations. My mother tried to force that mentality on me. And her mother succeeded on doing so destroying her dreams and turning her into a bitter hag that let's herself be pushed around by other men and really doesn't realize that I hate her for it. The only reason why I haven't reported her is because my father really is worse and I hate him even more. And she uses that knowledge to get away with all her abuses.

Yes, it certainly sticks in the brain. For more nightmares one should look at the horrific things done to young girls like Junko Furuta, Suzanne Clapper, Kelly Anne Bates, Suesan and Shelia Knorr, just to name a few. Every single one of the girls I mentioned was a teenaged minor who was tortured to death just for living and breathing. No one deserves to be forgotten or thrown away like so much trash.

Had she _aborted_ a single baby, she would have got more than that. We don't know the reason for that sentence, like missing evidence (not easy to determine cause of death if there are no injuries and no poison), or responsibilty shared by several perpetrators.

Yeah... See, your average Southern slave owner liked to think of their slaves as akin to a dog, or a horse. Sure, they might "put down a dog that bit them, or smack the horse to get it to move the way they wanted it to go," but they didn't like to think it was a CRUEL thing. Oh no. Slaves were commodities to the white Southernors in the same vein as their livestock. They'd be furious to lose a valuable commodity in such a way, and likely looked down on people who delighted in torturing slaves in the same way your average butcher would look on with disgust at someone who delighted in torturing animals.
The amount of mental gymnastics they had to jump through must have been crazy. Not to mention her cruelty likely gave those 'pesky' abolitionists a lot of ammo to load into their arguments.

@@wordforger Louisiana was different from other slave states. I am not endorsing or defending any slave owners but the history of Louisiana and its cultures are very unique. If you study black history of Louisiana youd be surprised that many slaves were "freed" from their owners. Living on their own and working in different areas. There's a long history of mixed aka creole people. New Orleans was diverse and you would be surprised by the number of white men who fell in love with black women. Some going as far as trying to marry them. Of course it was illegal but they would live together and have a family. Some married white men would live separately from their wives and have black mistresses. But they had to be very careful. I think new Orleans was far ahead of its time. Lots of White people there genuinely cared for slaves. Not because they were thought of as property but because they were people. You have to remember that new Orleans and Louisiana were part of France for years. Spain also owned Louisiana for some time too. Cajuns were descended from Canada. Particularly Arcadia. All these culturals and many more were all mixed.. new Orleans being a huge port city with several heritage and cultural traditions. Please research Louisiana and its history. You'd be surprised how different it was from other southern states.

Fun fact: the Indiana Women's prison where Gertrude Baniszewski was held is less than one mile from the house where Sylvia Likens was murdered.

@@michaelpalmieri7335 When mentioning "An American Crime", I feel it's important to note that the film was made over the objections of the Likens family, who did not want Sylvia's death to be exploited for "entertainment" and profit. "Our pain is their gain", they said. The filmmakers were aware of their feelings and made it anyway. For this reason, I think people should choose not to watch the film, and I'm saddened that artists like Ellen Page and Catherine Keener would choose to be a part of it. Now, no one should see "The Girl Next Door" because it's just trash.

@@michaelpalmieri7335 I already saw the film too Michael, and only became aware of that after the fact. I don't blame people for having a bit of morbid curiosity, I did too. I just don't think it should be promoted, but if people are interested in the movie, I think they should at least know of the objections and have the ability to make a choice whether they think it's worth participating in given that knowledge. I'd say no, because it isn't such a great film that not experiencing it is going to cause regret, and also many people would be perturbed by Banishewski being portrayed sympathetically.
As for the Girl Next Door, I saw it in a social setting where it just happened to be playing while I was there; I did not know anything about the film going in. But having seen it, I then wished I could bleach it out of my brain, it made me feel nasty and unclean for having seen it. It's one of those films like "I Spit On Your Grave" that nobody needs to see.

When I first heard 90%, my brain said, “If I get murdered, there’s a 9/10 chance the murderer would be a man.” But then I realized that’s JUST the people caught. Who knows how many women have gotten away with murder, especially since for so long it was assumed impossible for a woman to be a murderer. To this day still, while it takes ~4 years average for a male to be caught and convicted, the average for females is ~8 years. It’s freaky how few people you can really trust.

Alex Larson That probably has something to do with the methods that they use to kill people. When a man kills someone, they’re more likely to use a gun, a knife or their bare hands. A woman will more often use poison. Also a woman will target people in her care who are babies or old or very sick. All this means that a man is more likely to be seen leaving the scene of a murder covered in blood, while the woman is more likely to be seen as an innocent caregiver who lost a patient through no fault of their own.
