What really pisses me off are the stories I've heard where there is new evidence that clears them and the authorities are so convinced they got the right person that they won't hear it or let new evidence be tested or anything. They don't want to admit they messed up so they're going to let an innocent person pay the price.

Molly Brown Yes, but there will never be a foolproof system of determining guilt. All we can do is strive to improve it to reduce the number of false convictions. There will always be mistakes made.
This is why I don’t believe in the death penalty.

@@daerdevvyl4314 Any system created by humans is going to flawed because we are flawed.
The ones that tick me off and, thankfully, I think they are rare are the ones where there is reasonable doubt but the police and/or prosecutors ignore it because they're convinced they had the right person and won't even look at anyone else.
Then there are the ones you hear, again rarely, where some lab tech fudges the results to help the police convict people because they're so sure they have the right person.

I've always said that the U.S. has so many incarcerated people because the justice system is completely screwed up. Anyone in law enforcement, who is a political appointee, is forced to get convictions, just to keep their jobs. People will be railroaded into jail, by hook or by crook, in such a system. It is morally corrupt!

Sadly, they still are. People get nagged into plea deals every day. Many didnt do it but dont want to risk a jury or judge sending them for decades. If they lie and take a plea they get a much shorter time. Plea bargains are what has filled up the US prison system

That's how the justice system currently works. It's what's known as the 'adversarial system'. It's like asking how a defense attorney can defend someone they suspect is guilty. The idea is that a jury or judge will reason the truth from both their given arguments/cases. Without either one doing their job to the fullest, the current system wouldn't function.

As it turns out, the technician showing the new employee the lab work forgot to put on a face mask, so just talking to her while near the sample was enough to contaminate it with her own DNA.

and to make full use of the advantages of DNA testing, think as much country's as possible should take DNA from all inhabitants (like whenever someone enters the country or is born). that way the whole western world (at least) would have the DNA of all their citizens (legal/illegal) in a database. that way, if the cops find any DNA at a crime scene they know within a short time who where at the scene.
there're to much crimes where the cops find DNA but the person that left it is unknown to the authorities. and the cops just have to hope the criminal gets caught for something else to get the DNA match.

So a Christian murders someone and keeps quiet their entire lives to avoid punishment. Then on their death bed they confess to avoid being sent to hell? It sounds less of a confession and more like a plea bargain to avoid punishment again.

Regarding the Starved Rock Murders, many locals still are divided as to Weger's participation. There are a lot of theories, some believable and some bizarre. My dad was a bus driver in the area in 1960, driving the route taking Weger to work. Dad was questioned if he saw the scratches on Weger's face. I believe he did see scratches, but could not give them a date when he saw them. There is also a local woman who believes her brother was involved in the murders.

How can we guarantee not sentencing a person of crimes they didn't commit?

Id just like to say that its a refreshing change to see& hear a presenter like Robert fr Top Tenz, who is precise, erudite, clear in speech if perhaps a tad hurried in delivery. For me, he also pronounces words, names & places correctly! My pet hate is when so many presenters mispronounce important factual names etc, as above stated. Does it take THAT much trouble to ensure names etc are correctly pronounced? And oh! Have there been some doozies recently. Im not being pedantic, i just think its important to get this stuff right. Young kids watch some of these vids, so isnt it up to presenters to get it right? Grammar & speech are at appalling levels today esp th younger crowd. So! That said, its a pleasure to tune into Top Tenz for ex excellent delivery well researched, i always learn new info at each topic viewed. THANK YOU ROBERT AT TOP TENZ 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🤓
