Hey everyone - I know this video didn't end on a definitive stance on if the big G is a "rip-off" of any sort. I can share my personal thoughts here because I find the conversation fascinating, but my caveat is that my thoughts on the subject (and yours too) don't really matter... I'll get to that...
Often times, bootleggers who get sued by Godzilla's lawyers use what’s called the “the dinosaur defense”. They argue that their ripoff isn’t Godzilla but a regular T-Rex. Toho’s lawyers scoff at that defense, saying “a T-Rex doesn’t stand upright, have long arms, breathe atomic breath, have dorsal plates running down its back, and (most important) destroy cities”. This statement is on record multiple times. This is THEIR legal stance on when a dinosaur becomes a Godzilla imposter.
The T-Rex in this cartoon literally does all of those things except breathe atomic breath. I can say with high confidence that if this design came out today, Toho's lawyers would come knocking. You've seen in my Lawsuit video that they've acted on less (ex. Subway). And if Arctic Giant came out today, I don't think any of us would blame Toho for going after it. It's not parody; it's a high profile Superhero fighting a Tyrannosaurus who's sized like Godzilla, looks like Godzilla, and attacks a city like Godzilla. The military can't hurt it. It walks through bridges. My guess is that the lawyers would use all of these points to argue that this T-Rex is too close to Godzilla.
But Arctic Giant didn't come out second. It came out first. So to me, it stands to reason that BY THEIR OWN STANDARDS, Godzilla is the knock-off. Now, the worst fear Toho's lawyers have is the design of Godzilla falling victim to genericization. It's a legitimate fear, in my opinion. But I find that the argument can be made that this has already happened, and it started before the first Godzilla movie even dropped (between this, Yamir, rhedosaurus, and countless early depictions of the T-Rex).
However, like I said at the beginning, my opinion doesn't matter. This case would need to be argued in front of a judge for a precedent to be set. It's a case I'd love to see out of my own interest and curiosity (I'm not rooting for either side here). But we likely won't see this case because rarely do Godzilla imposters take Toho's lawyers to court. They usually back off quickly because, let's face it, Godzilla's team's got deep pockets. However as you saw in my Lawsuit video, there was a case where Toho lost in the early 1980s. It could happen again. It could happen a lot! But it doesn't because a judge rarely gets to hear these arguments.
So is Godzilla a rip-off? I mean, as some of you pointed out, everything's a rip-off and inspiration and blah blah. But LEGALLY, by the standards of their own lawyers, I think you can argue he is. Also, I know it's on record that Godzilla was inspired by Kong and Fathoms, etc., but I'm not aware of any acknowledgement of this cartoon. It could be a coincidence (which, again, is a point for the genericization of this design)! But coincidence or not, by the standards of Toho's lawyers, Fleischer might've had a good case to sue!
I think the problem with an argument like that is that no one copyrighted or maintained a copyright on those designs because that was just the image of a T-Rex at the time. Not only that but even the original design had enough features to be copyrighted. His tree bark like skin the oak leaf shaped spikes and the fact that they always made the fire he breathes (with expectation of posters and much later on) a color you would never associate with fire. I never saw anyone use those design features unless it was a direct copy or parody of Godzilla. It makes it hard to claim it is generic if it has two or more of those features. Add to that the issue of no one copyrighting that body layout for a T-REX and that is why it's hard to fight Toho's copyright.
I was waiting for someone else coming in with another version close to godzilla before he debut. However, wouldn't the rip off be his father. The main godzilla is the son, or at least another generation of the species. So technically, the father I'd the 50a version and would be the knock off during that time.
Godzilla is much cooler
It's not about who comes up with the design, but rather, who's the first to make it big. While there are other creations based on early depictions of dinosaurs featured in film before Godzilla, Toho was the only one to really push their character as a franchise instead of a one-and-done, as well as do any sort of licensing and copyright with the character design. The others failed to do so, and thus forfeit their rights to specifics of the design, and thus, cannot bring their case to court. It's like how Oreo, despite being a knock-off of Hydrox, is the one that has taken over the market and is a household name.

Those Superman shorts are still really good, and nostalgic for me. My grandpa loves them and we’d watch them every time we’d go for a visit.

I watch a DVD of them weeks ago, and they still hold up. They manage to make the villains threatening, in spite of Superman being OP, because the villains are still a danger to other people.

Gosh darn that animation from 1942 is amazing!
And pretty much "buried" Fleischer Studios. They went so far over budget and over time with those shorts (at least that resulted in a stunning product) that Paramount seized the animation studio's assets and canned the Fleischer brothers. That's why the Popeye shorts started to be presented by Paramount. But the Fleischer Superman legacy would survive in a way. Bruce Timm was greatly inspired by those shorts when the early 90s Batman animated series was being developed.
It's most likely a coincidence.
The Arctic Giant is probably based on classic western dragons and Godzilla is based on different dinosaurs and partially eastern dragons.
It is a coincidence Godzilla takes far more cues from The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, but it is a fun coincidence.
As another fun coincidence, Superman's shorts saw him fighting a Nazi who dressed up as a Klansman. A few years in his radio show, Superman would fight the KKK.

When I was a VERY young kid, I remember seeing that scene where the artic giant destroys the bridge on TV and didn't see any footage after, and for years I had no idea where it was from. That scene captivated me because of how well it was animated. It wasn't until I rented a DVD copy of those Fleisher Superman cartoons during my preteens that I discovered it was from this cartoon!
I highly recommend checking out the rest of the Fleisher Superman cartoons. I am a huge superhero fan and those cartoons were SO influential to modern superhero cartoons. We wouldn't have the best Batman on TV without the Fleisher Superman cartoons!

Wow this is really neat! I never heard of this before! I do think the similarities between the two might just be coincidence- Godzilla does take a lot of inspiration from their likes of King Kong and Rhedosaurus! Though there is still a chance that at least 1 person working on Godzilla had seen this cartoon and used it as inspiration!
That is true. Superman was very popular at the time and that includes the cartoons.
Well timeline wise, Japan would be getting nothing from us when this cartoon originally debuted. It wouldn’t be till the 1950’s that western culture would really catch on. Superman’s popularity in Japan would grow in this time, even getting his own manga from the creator of Speed Racer.
It’s possible, but timeline wise it’s tricky.

This was actually the only Superman thing I had to watch as a kid. It was on a 3 pack at Big Lots or something with the 1925 Lost World and The Giant Gila Monster. Some of my favorite movies as a kid
The cool thing is that ALL of these shorts have been restored in 4K by WB and are being released onto Blu Ray in May! They are going to look leaps and bounds better than any of the public domain VHS, DVD or HD upscales that have been spread around UA-cam and elsewhere.
As a kid I watched Superman: The Arctic Giant so many times.
As someone that lists Superman and Godzilla as my favorite fictional characters, I’m happy to see you giving this short a little love… but still disappointed that we never got a real Godzilla vs Superman crossover.

As a kid, my dad got me this episode on DVD! As a fan of Godzilla and super heros, this was right up my alley! I got excited as it appeared to have Godzilla and Superman on the cover! I thought it was pretty cool! Superman Vs Monsters and Villains was the name of the DVD!

Headcanon: All the monsters in this series can break the fourth wall but Orga gets transported between series’ randomly, hints why he’s confused when Megalon can’t see MIB’s hand or the camera in episode 100.
Just speaking about Arctic Giant, because Superman never kills his opponent (intentionally and at the time, anyway) I always loved how he just knocks the poor thing down, starts tieing a street light around it's neck before it fades to a newspaper reel, and then it's revealed the monster was relocated to somewhere, probably some high-security zoo or something.

Godzilla just really hates bridges. Even the latest MonsterVerse movie shows Godzilla slicing a bridge in half with his dorsal fins during his landfall in Hong Kong.
It's hardly unique to the 2014 film and GvK, he does it in quite a few other films xD

Toho leased him out to Marvel in the 70s, Dark Horse in the 90s, and IDW in the 2010s! Does this mean that we'll finally get an official canon Godzilla/Superman crossover in the 2030s?
4:53 Arctic giants melting somehow reminds me of the resurrection of Megatron in Transformers (2007).
I've seen this short a few times over the years but now I can enjoy it as an unofficial Godzilla/Superman crossover, thanks. And it also makes me desperately want some live action version of this (though I'd settle for one of the Godzilla comic with the Champions, Avengers or FF).

I mean me personally, I don't think he's a ripoff, at least not intentionally: the idea of a giant reptilian monster destroying cities has been a thing since forever with like dragons and shit, so it's not unfathomable that someone also came up with the idea of some giant lizard toppling buildings
At Putnam Museum, they have clips of Superman vs Arctic Monster, It's on this thing so you can make a video, I used those to make "Godzilla vs Superman"

I don't think it is because the U.S. and Japan were at war when 'The Arctic Giant' had its debut so it obviously wasn't going to get a Japanese release and if it followed the usual patterns of such short it probably got stowed away after its run, rarely if ever being seen again until color television became prominent in the early 60's. It is well established that Godzilla was inspired by 'The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms', circa 1953 and like 'The Arctic Giant' the titular creatures gets thawed out of a glacier. There's a good chance that someone who worked on '-Beast-' at least remembered '-Giant', even if they hadn't seen it recently. But the similarities between the Giant and Godzilla I think can be chalked up to the misconceptions that existed in the public about dinosaurs at the time; the vertical poster, dorsal ridge, serpentine tail, etc.

Aw great a new Orga review. But if you do another Orga, I hope one day you talks about Attack of the Super Monsters. It’s one of those so bad it’s good kind of films and love to here your thoughts ( and what jokes you would make with it).
I think some have spoken about how "The Arctic Giant" even predates the "The Fog Horn" by 9 years. The Fog Horn is a short story by Ray Bradbury upon which "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" was based. The ORIGINAL TITLE of that story was "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" and that film's producers bought the rights to the story and then Bradbury changed the name of the story.
So it predates Godzilla by 12 years, predates the "Godzilla film influence" by 11 years, and predates the "literature genesis point" of that "Godzilla film influence" by NINE years.
And it has a ton of the key tropes of both. A creature awakened after being frozen in ice is the exact origin of The Best from 20K...and yet this short did it YEARS earlier in a very famous and widely seen fashion.
And of course, the overall design and posture are very much "Proto-Godzilla" in many ways.
Beast and Godzilla owe a LOT to The Arctic Giant
Ok I know haven’t commented on this but the artic giant is actually the first kaiju animated in animation before some other animated kaiju came along and even before kong, godzilla, gamera, and other famous kaiju became animated but if the artic giant ain’t the first kaiju To be animated then who’s really the first kaiju to be animated

It ultimately doesn't matter, because nobody went after Toho about Godzilla and being a supposed ripp off of this cartoon. A case that I don't think Toho would've won if Fleischer had.
Plus the Arctic Giant feels more like a possible inspiration, and Godzilla is different enough that Fleischer probably didn't see any point.
I remember being bummed out as a kid that Superman beat the Godzilla like Dino in that short lol. And wow is that animation amazing!

Finally, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen a Orga reviews.
I love the hypocritical aura that Orga is spewing in this video by claiming that Godzilla is a "rip-off" despite the fact that he was formally a collective mass of formless aliens fused with Godzilla's DNA.
On the plus side Orga does look physically different.
I actually have a DVD of the Superman videos and the Arctic giant is on there. Man from 1942 I always wondered what era they Superman cartoons were from. Always love watching them as a kid and I really like this one. Hey wait a minute that short was longer than this video. Does that make the video a rip off of something?
Only thing I think that makes Goji unique in the “giant lizard Dino” comparisons is his radioactive origins. Although that’s not too unique in that many 50’s critters got that. Just that Goji was the first to combine the massive lizard symbolism and radiation origins.
Helps too that the movie was effective and emotional unlike many other films of its age.
Godzilla takes after King Kong, the Arctic Giant and the Rhedosaurus, that's hardly a secret that was kept by the Big G's original creator, at least with Kong and the Rhedosaurus, but the Fleischer Superman shorts were so huge throughout other parts of the globe that I have no doubts there was some influence there as well.
Everything takes after something at the end of the day, even the mighty Eighth Wonder takes notes from the mythical tales of giant apes from the jungle that would often kidnap women, there's a late 1880s French statue of that matter that might've influenced the mighty Kong too, but of course, the 1933 classic was the first to do many things and even pioneered others in the world of cinema, so it keeps receiving admiration to this day, as does Ray Harryhausen's work and the Fleischer studios' influence on early animation.
We wouldn't be where we are without others inspiring us, after all... Just make sure you're not copying those who inspire you, though :p

True! Toho’s lawyers’ worst scenario is the genericization of Godzilla. I argue that the genericization has already happened, possibly even before the first Godzilla movie!

When I heard of this from a book of movie monsters, I thought it's another Kaiju movie about an oversized Tyrannosaurus frozen in the arctic until awakened by human interference, and caused a rampage in a city, but it turned out to be a superman episode. In fact, because of it, as a kid, I always imagined a hyper-evolved aquatic T-rex as a Kaiju rampaging in L.A. to lay eggs here which inspires the Godzilla 1998 I watched.
Too be fair, t.rex was thought to kangaroo stance until the 80s

Forgot to say this like I knew Godzilla May of taken some inspiration from the beast from 20,000 fathoms ( and Kong to an extent) but I never new about the arctic beast. Actually I never knew about these old Superman cartoons until recently.
Man, I love Fleischers cartoons, but despite seeing this one multiple times over the years, I never really thought about how this godzilla like monster predates the big g buy more than ten years.
Who remembers seeing clips of this cartoon when they watched DK’s Eyewitness series? The episode about Dinosaurs in particular.

This was a great video on an amazing cartoon! But as a Fleischer aficionado, I've only got one disgruntlement, and that's involving you crediting Dave Fleischer as the director. That credit meant something very different over there, Dave was more of a "creative supervisor" than an actual director, the de-facto director's credit was actually given to the first credited animator, in this case, its Willard Bowsky. A very common mistake for those not in the know, but other than that, great video!
I mean yeah, I can see why it’s a common mistake since the title card literally says “Directed by Dave Feischer” lol. I don’t doubt you at all though, we know from Batman how wishy-washy proper credit was in the 1940s

There is a King Kong inspired episode of this Superman cartoon called Terror on the Midway it's about a circus gorilla named Gigantic who goes on a rampage after a monkey accidentally unlocks his wagon cage.
Godzilla was 2 movies in 1954.1 gojira full Japanese version.2 godzilla king of the monsters with American actors and Raymond burr.jirras was in the 60s toho had a history of making multiple suits.

Well Godzilla actually is a rip-off or was meant to be, he was primarily inspired by Rhedosaurus (the beast from 20,000 fathoms) and the movie would be called the monster from 20,000 miles (or something like that) godzilla also took a little inspiration from king Kong, kinda interesting since godzillas name is derived from a gorilla and a whale and the director of Gojira (1954) confirmed godzilla was meant to be a knock-off so unfortunately godzilla indeed is a knock-off so its technically Rhedosaurus that is supposed to be king of the monsters if you really think about it (although he is pretty weak and smol)

You should review some of the episodes from The New Adventures of Superman from the 1960s or 1970s because he battles a lot of giant monsters that are similar to one's from other movies.

I always thought those Superman cartoons were ahead of their time. Well, minus the WW II shorts. It's a shame the studio shut down before they could get around to doing other super hero shorts. Imagine if they got the license for Batman at the time.
Superman copied earlier characters Hugo Hercules, Popeye, Gladiator, Doc Savage, and Lothar.
By "degrees of separation", they did...in a way. Bruce Timm was greatly inspired by the Fleischer shorts when developing "Batman: the Animated Series". Really, one could drop Timm's character designs into those Superman shorts and they'd blend right into the scenes.
@@Redfern42No doubt the Timm-verse was inspired partially by these shorts, but we've had several Batman cartoons including the team up Super Friends series before then. I'm talking about what if they had animated Batman cartoons similar to these back then. I know the live action serials were made around that time, but if they had a cartoon back then, how would it have shaped the Bat-franchise? Would we have had the super hero cartoon boom in the 40's instead of the 60's? The only other theatrical super hero cartoon shorts series around the time was Mighty Mouse.
@@mightyfilm Ah, I think I get it. Would the creation of Batman animated shorts in the early 40s altered the couse of his later evolution? Could very well be. After all, Superman's ability to outright fly came from the Fleischer short. In the first, he simply "leaped" long distances and heights (as in "tall buildings in a single bound"). But with the following segments, the Fleischer crew opted to have Supes flat out fly. That power was later adapted to the comics. What might they have presented with Batman/ Is it possible they might have done a "Peter Parker" (tears before he was created), having Bruce get bitten by a bat and acquire special abilities?! (As opposed to rabies...) Not saying that would have been a good, or a bad idea, just something that could have changed the course of Batman (who, as a property, only a few years old at that time). Something to ponder, certainly!
@@Redfern42 Not to mention there wasn't exactly a wealth of action based cartoon shorts in the golden era of theatrical animation. I'm surprised Superman didn't start more of a trend there.
Fun Fact : The Rhedosaurus was also awakened by an Atomic testing. I suppose the only one who truly knows was the Late Great Ray Bradbury who penned The Foghorn. Which was the inspiration for both films.

Loved the Cartoon where the Man of Steel fought the Arctic Giant. It's the Closest we'll ever come to seeing Superman vs Godzilla.
