Do they seek cat food too?

Godzilla Copyright laws is very confusing, hope you’re having a good day today man.
I always thought Godzilla was *public domain* ; I mean, I watched the *original* Godzilla movie on HBO Max not too long ago, and I don't think it was Toho that produced *that* !
Knowing that that's *not* the case apparently, I wonder if that's the reason the Godzilla cartoon series from 1998 wound up being cancelled.
I certainly don't blame Toho for wanting to protect their property, *especially* considering that there're corporations that wanna *steal* other people's property these days (I'm pointing my knife at *you* Whiffers of the Coast), but I honestly think that as long as you're not claiming that *you* made the character of Godzilla (which I don't think *anyone* Toho sued was), it should be *fine* to use him in a work; I mean *come on* it's *free advertising* for them!
If TOHO sued because Bagzilla looked like Godzilla, they gotta copyright every five-year-olds first depiction of a T-Rex.
Don’t forget old depictions of dinosaurs!
The only thing scarier than a giant monster is having to deal with said monsters lawyers.
Your honor, mr goji wasn’t destroying Tokyo on purpose, he just needed a stretch break
Are his lawyers also giant monsters?
Rodan and anguris are his lawyers
@@Goobsterwill k
I wrote this comment before I got around to watching the video I didn't think the same joke would be used in the video lol.
I remember now. “Godzilla Heritage” was a fan film that Godzilla’s lawyers shut down and even though it’s completed it can’t be shown online, essentially making it lost media.
If you fought Nintendo had rough lawyers, wait until you see Godzilla's.
You don't wanna mess with TOHO's legendary lawyers
And then there's Toei's...
Now I wanna see a three way lawsuit between Nintendo, Toho, and Toei
If someone made Merchandise with the Art of Godzilla-Kun along with Mario and Kamen Rider characters, who would present a lawsuit first Toho, Nintendo or Toei?
I would think that nintendo is more protective with their characters than godzilla.
The weird irony of Toho suing a company called "Honda" for creating something Godzilla related...
💀
I am surprised they went after their own kind. Both Japanese.
@@johnd8788this truly enriches ishiro hondas vision of atomic horror
I feel like once you put “zilla” at the end of your product, that’s a major red flag for the lawyers
The way that this won't get you a lawsuit is if the thing is clearly a godzilla parody. That's why godzilla memes don't get wiped off the planet.
I think that’s why they copyrighted the Final Wars version of 98 Goji as “Zilla”
Nintendo got away with "kong".
@@caucasoidape8838 The damage already happened when the creators of kong found out, so it didn't really matter anymore. That's why Toho got away with kong. It also wasn't toho's idea to so king kong vs godzilla, but a Toho employee who "borrowed" the script for a king kong vs Frankenstein movie. Toho just went along with the idea of the king kong vs godzilla movie.
@@caucasoidape8838 I think Kong is public domain right? I could be wrong

In Austin, TX (where I live) there is a Pizza place called Mangia and for the longest time they had a mascot called Mangiazilla. It was a huge, green, theropoidal creature with plates down its back. They got sued by Toho and stopped using the character. Their C&D Letter is even framed on the wall of their main location.
Amazing!
I remember that mascot! I used to go to the Round Rock location before it closed. It was the reason I went there in the first place. There’s also another place in Round Rock that used a chibi Godzilla as a mascot, but I won’t say their name because it’s still being used.
Damn I live in Austin and have never heard of this place, I gotta go see that framed C&D letter now lmao
@@thebasicgeek The Pizza is REALLY good as well, Chicago-Style deep dish.
@@breegrimm7142 My family loves deep dish so I’ll definitely give it a try
Ok but that Mecha Hobzilla looks actually pretty sick and Toho should definitely make their own Kaiju themed Sodas
I like to imagine that tohos legal team consists of only chuck but hes like a final boss of the lawyers
The Ghidorah of lawyers.
In Seattle we used to have a used game store that opened under the name "Pink Godzilla" but they ended up having to change the name to "Pink Gorilla" after Toho contacted them and told them to change it or else. They initially had merch of their mascot though and me and my husband still own a Pink Godzilla plush somewhere.
Ah yes gotta protect that Godzilly brand
Love Kelsey. Asked for a collab a while back but she was too busy. Her reply was very kind
I own a store where I sell monster toys and Tiki mugs. I was briefly thinking of naming it "Destroy All Monsters," but I'm ultimately glad I did not XD
@@MonsterKidCoryait, you OWN a monster store? WHERE IS IT?!?!
They definitely have no intention of doing another run of plush for their upcoming anniversary so don't waste your timing asking them about it. No winking face that isnt winking.
Toho to me is right up there with Nintendo and Toei as far as bloodthirsty legal teams go. They obviously have the right to be, but I also think sometimes they get a bit too carried away at times.
Nah I agree with being very tough on it, folk will always try though when you know there’s a good chance it’ll cost you in extra fees most will just opt for something that is a more generic monster.
Like the old saying goes.
Give them an inch and they’ll take a mile.
I'm personally fine with the way Toho is handling it since most of these were outright copying Godzilla so it's understandable why they're mad, Nintendo on the other hand just wants to sue anyone for even the slightest reference to a Nintendo game that doesn't even make money
All too often corporations like Toho only care about one thing: 💵
@Dinoslay All businesses are about profit, it wouldn't be a very good business otherwise.
I always find this type of statement strange especially when it's a big brand.
@@ObsessiveGeek I do agree about the starting point being a legit motivation. Everybody needs money to some degree after all. But how far does that have to go until it becomes plain ol’ greed? That’s what Toho’s decisions at times reek of. Corporations that only care about making money at any means tend to lose their integrity. Case of point, fan works made by passionate followers of the brand for no absolutely no monetary gain being nonetheless taken down and nearly having their lives ruined because of it, all because a corporation went too far to ”protect it’s interests”. It does make you ponder how far is too far.
Another case I know about, is with the Anne Hathaway film, Colossal.
In its early development around 2014-15, it was pitched around the Hollywood studios and the mockup poster they used in the pitch straight up had the 2014 Godzilla design and a Mazinger Z looking robot on it. Even its short description specifically mentioned Godzilla attacking Tokyo.
Toho jumped into action really quickly and forced the creator of Colossal to stop pitching the movie for awhile until 2017 when there were sufficient changes in the story to not warrant the wrath of Toho. Honestly, this case should've made the list.
It might’ve if I could find the pitch poster or any visual aid but I wasn’t able to. Maybe next time
@@MonsterIslandBuddies There was a photo on Wikizilla, if I recall.
@@TitanosaurusFan75 Yup, they’re there, on the Gallery page for Colossal.
Well like I said in the video, it could’ve gone on forever. Can’t put every case in
@@MonsterIslandBuddies Totally understandable… although a never-ending MIB video would be pretty darn cool 😁
…to _watch_ anyway. To _produce,_ probably not so much 😆
I am still p1ssed at Toho that we lost several MST3K Episodes because of them. So petty.
I'm surprised they even tried to release Megalon on DVD when they did. Surely someone could have seen that it wasn't public domain
@@UJEvans Not every movie they did or released was public domain. I do believe someone on the MST3k side talked to someone, not someone at Toho though, about the rights as home video rights are so bizarre that contracts made decades even before home video was a thing are still valid; I'm looking at you, King Kong versus Godzilla.
A contract signed in the 60s is why "King Kong tai Gojira" has to be included as a special bonus feature in its own box set for BD release, wild yet dumb.
There are some movies that are public domain MST3k won't release because someone said "no"... rhymes with "Susan Hart", spelled the same too... and there are truly copyright movies they released because someone said "Hell yeah!"
I swear there were Godzilla and Kong gummy snacks back in late 80s early 90s.
There were! Werewolf too. I just remember those three, though. Godzilla's name was written in same font as in the title card of the 1956 "Godzilla, King of the Monsters!"
As someone who used to work in licensing, I appreciate that you included a really important facet of copyright protection- keeping ELEMENTS of a brand from becoming generic. The skreeeonk, the dorsal fins, the character shape, keeping all of these together as "godzilla" is important, otherwise knockoffs can really run rampant- especially if they're profitable. Good video!
Let's not forget that this is a Japanese company and Japan copyright law is HARSH. No wonder they'd be so overprotective of the American rights as well. Yet, considering how many Godzilla inspired (or just plain ripped off) kaiju/tokusatsu projects out there, I can see why they'd be that protective so their official brand doesn't get watered down. Like how relentlessly litigious Ross Jr. is about Alvin and the Chipmunks, there were a LOT of bad high pitched voiced knockoffs, such as Peter Pan Records' The Crickets. It's honestly hard to pick a side in this. A local company using the character as parody that could lose everything they have, or the company that fears a flood of bad, potentially dangerous products.
Also, "Thanks, President Godzilla." So glad you made that reference here.
Sometimes it does seem like they are nitpicky about their lawsuits and copyright claims (I.E. on UA-cam)...but honestly they have to. You let a few do it and more people will follow. It's a slippery slope that they just don't want to even test how far it will go. So I can understand their wanting to protect the character.
They used to be! I remember twenty years ago when Toho went on a killing spree, having tons of Godzilla tribute videos purged. It was a sad time to be around.
@@Lokiofsuburbia youtube hasn't even existed for 20 years
@@ikaiju-eu9wn *shrug* it was a long time ago
Two words, Godzilla Heritage.
@@retroroy1983 i will never forgive toho for this
Obviously while ToHo did more or less create the kaiju genre they don’t own it, only the characters they create, for example Gorgo looks a lot like Godzilla you’d think they’d get sued however due to their being various difference in both what was added and subtracted from the design so it’s complete legal. Isn’t the intricacies of of trademark law interesting?
Monster movies aka “Creature Feature” have been around for a LONG time, if anything I would point to Willis O'Brien, the pioneer in stop motion movies..most notably King Kong [1933] though to be fair Kaiju have a much stronger fan base than the traditional monster movie.
U see how ur wrong giant monster movies have existed before Godzilla was even a fart of an idea if anything universal should send a cease and desist to toho but there not giant assholes like toho there monster's have been used by everyone and they dont sue cus the know u cant own vampires mummy's or wolf men
"Run! It's Godzilla!"
"It looks like Godzilla but due to international copyright laws It's not."
"Still we should run like it is Godzilla!"
"Though it isn't"
AHHHHH
Imo, the most iconic feature of godzillas design has to be the dorsal plates
Ironically I feel Godzilla [1998] aka ‘Zilla is a perfect example of something that’s close but definitely not THE Godzilla and clearly Toho agrees with that.
The “I will know it when I see it” statement rings true here, it’s easier to point towards what makes something Godzilla or not than to describe it, though it’s got a lot to do with attitude/presence I feel…you just know when you’re looking upon the face of the greatest monster of all time!
In the comcast commercial, not only was there Godzilla on the TV screen, but if you look at the toys on the shelf at a couple points, it looks like a Godzilla toy on the shelf fighting another monster robot toy.
There should be a second part to this, I remember when Pharaoh Munch, a rapper, got smacked for sampling the Godzilla March in a song, a hot dog stand for selling giant "Dogzillas", etc etc etc. Btw, how has the band Gojira gotten away with it for so long? Is that a "kosher until you ask situation"? Great video as always, MIB!
Apparently, from what I saw a long time ago, they got into trouble at first for calling Godzilla, then changed it to Gojira and Toho was ok with it, wich is quite ironic that the americanised name is the one they care more about but then again it makes sense.
@@Megaspinosaurusrex Good for them, is a much better name his a metal band.
Reminds me of when Pixar was gonna have Frank from Monsters Inc have a Godzilla roar but Toho said no so they used a Chicken cluck instead. At least they tried to get permission instead of facing a lawsuit
If you’re planning to make another Godzilla Copyright Lawsuit video, I got something that might be interesting for you. A rapper called Pharoahe Monch made a song called Simon Says. And he used Godzilla vs Mothra’s Main Title from 1992 in the song! And Toho sued him in 2001!
Yes! Almost made it into this one but I was nervous playing the song sample and getting g copyright blocked!
@@MonsterIslandBuddies oh the irony 😜
What I hate is that they even come after fan projects. There was this one really cool one that had live action suits and everything, but they got a cease and desist by Toho’s Lawyers. Now we’ll have to wait another 30 years to see it when Godzilla finally becomes public domain.
TOHO is still going to go after people for Godzilla, though. Since all the movies are in a franchise then they'll just sue because of the copyrights in place for the other entries.
@@IWasaTeenageTeenWolf Once it hits public domain, as long as it’s different enough in appearance from other Godzilla films, it should be ok. Now will that stop them from trying? Who can say.
When that day comes, I want an Anti-Copyright lawyer team to fight on behalf of fans everywhere. In fact, make a Parody Kaiju movie about it.
@JumperTV I have no idea TBH. I still won't forgive TOHO for being part of the reason why the Godzilla power-hour, Marvel comics Godzilla and even something as so stupid as American Kaiju being harassed to oblivion because " how DARE you even smell like Godzilla!" Hell, I bet a penny TOHO went nuclear with the creator of Rugrats for Reptar.
@@IWasaTeenageTeenWolf The irony is Reptar has become so iconic I feel he’s his own thing. I’d buy Reptar merch is all I’m saying.
@jumpertv7876 Nintendo did the same thing with Mario similar Toho's Godzilla
Part of the issue with protecting IP is it's kind of "all or nothing". If they don't pursue smaller or less clear claims, it sets a legal precedent that others can use that as a defense for their infringement.
Toho is the Nintendo of the Kaiju movies, it only sues It's fans.
Wait these large companies are fans of godzilla?
Godzilla stops being Godzilla when he looses the dorsal fins and his limbs and head, sooooooo..... When he's not Godzilla
Oh boy here we go, Monster Island Buddies talking about its possible killers!
I’m just picturing Godzilla in a suit in a In the quart room setting Defending his copyright status.

*Fun Fact*
There is also a scene in Pee-Wee's Big Adventure where you can see a Godzilla mask and a Godzilla action figure in Pee-Wee's bedroom along with some Ultraman action figures.
You've done it MIB...you created the first UA-cam ad break I can't bring myself to skip, Andy is so cute.
Oh
Right
Godzillers.
Oh man, I hope Toho never finds my local indie beer company...because they definitely have a Godzilla infringement hopps beer.
The Subway lawsuit was a real stretch on Toho's part.
Lol I never saw the five dollar foot long commercial with the large Dinosaur but I do remember seeing the remake of it with a giant generic looking Robot after they got threatened. I know companies have to protect their products but Toho seriously needs to calm down with the legal stuff they make plenty of money off us fans
and I thought that Nintendo was the king of lawsuits
I'm still pissed that they've taken down all of GilvaSunner's music. God forbid if we actually enjoy their soundtracks.
@@lordkaijux5262 still never forgive Nintendo for deleting BrawlBsrbmxs 3 and super Mario Logan super plush channel. Those two were a big apart of my childhood.
At one time Nintendo the maker of the arcade game donkey Kong was sued by universal studios because they thought the game infringed on King Kong but the courts ruled that the two can't be confused with each other
Speaking of a dog's breakfast, you should have a look at King Kong's copyright status. If you thought Godzilla's was bad...
Personal opinion: I don't think Toho is wrong to defend their copyrights and trademarks, but I also think that this point that ____zilla is clearly a generic term in parody or homage. Nobody is going to seriously confuse ______zilla with actual Godzilla. Hell, I don't even confuse official American Godzilla films for actual Godzilla. Oh yeah, another thing that might be worth talking about is the Aurora "Godzilla's Go-Cart" model kit from the 60's that Toho pulled because they felt it offended the dignity of their monster. Godzilla. In the 60's.
This I agree with
have no issues with protecting your image and brand, but japanese companies tend to go too far
@@iluvyurbles As I understand it, Japan doesn't have a fair use or parody exemption like the US does. You do see these sorts of parodies in older anime, but apparently the companies were just looking the other way. In recent years, though, companies have been cracking down on this. There were several series of the anime Osomatsu-san that only aired once and were then banned and replaced with alternate episodes.
Osomatsu-san is a sequel to the manga and anime Osomatsu-kun. In Invasion of the Astro-Monster, when Godzilla jumps up in the air and does a silly pose, he is copying a character from Osomatsu-san.
I think that TOHO is over proactive with Godzilla and i think that toho needs to calm down when it comes to Copyright Lawsuits. Because even MLP FIM had Spike the dragon do a reverse role parody on both Godzilla and King Kong in the same episode.
WAIT A MINUTE! I actually have one of those inflatable green Godzilla’s from the Yankee stadium. I bought it on eBay a long time ago for $21.81! I did not know where it originated from. But thank you for telling me MIB, because now I know 👍🏻
I was beginning to think the five dollar footlong Godzilla parody was a Mandela effect for me (although I remember the lyric being ‘one foot long”) because I remember seeing it once as a kid but I could never find it
A temp license to use the Big G is about....10 grand and even then? Toho will literally tell you yes no on what you can and can't do with the big guy....I know this from a friend Don Hillsman II he's a massive godzilla and toku fan and told me this story
That was a PERFECT HIGH FIVE (you & Andy) 2:20 - 2:25
The lawsuits sometimes go way too far TBH. Literally you can design a Kaiju and have to legit worry if TOHO is going to burn your house down because * gasp*....it's a lizard.
I heard of a sushi restaurant in NYC called Godzilla Sushi. As soon as the store opened for business, they received a letter saying they must change the name or else.
There's also the "Gorilla" sushi bar that used to be the "Godzilla" sushi bar. They kept the logo, though (which is a reptillian eye).
After what happened to Tsubaraya and their legal headaches with Chaiyo, Toho must have taken notes.
The Tsuburaya/Chaiyo thing was way after Toho became infamous for their litigation.
Incredibly informative video! The copyright lawsuit history of Godzilla is incredibly expansive and you captured/illustrated it brilliantly!
Subway did keep running the ad but they replaced Godzilla with a generic robot.
I wonder if they went after Hudson Soft for Super Bonk? You literally turn into Godzilla and can wreck cities in bonus games. True you retain Bonks head, but the body is clearly that of the king.
Broly:at least toho didn't mind the dragonzord's existence as a omage to the showa character
It's kind of funny that Warner Brothers kind of worked with Toho by allowing their partner Legendary to make Godzilla films. I guess those lawsuits were water under the bridge.
The sentence "Their infamous character,Mecha Godzilla" confuses the hell out of me!!
Like a lot of Japanese companies, Toho doesn't realize that the rest of the world has Fair Use.
And common sense, it seems.
King Kong had an equally rough copyright journey. It's still publicly unclear who owns the rights.
Yeah I’m sorry, that Subway lawsuit is ridiculously petty. That thing barely even looks like Godzilla and is such a generic lizard creature it could fit to almost any giant monster of its variety.
Might as well just sue Jurassic Park since T-Rexes “look too much Godzilla” as well.
I agree. Half of that case seems to be that the monster is in Japan, which is associated with Godzilla… but the city doesn’t look like Japan to me… so is the issue that the woman is Asian? That seems messed up to me.
It's ironic considering Subway tried to sue a hotdog company that was using the word footlong which failed. 🙄who says 12 inches.
@@magatetus And someone sued Subway after measuring their "Footlong" sandwich and finding it wasn't actually 12" long.
Jared Fogle was a bigger monster than Godzilla ever was.
@@KasumiKenshirou 😮damn!
It is awesome that you have a channel dedicated to such a specific niche. Your following is very impressive. Great job with the animations in the videos!
Not sure if this ended up as a lawsuit, but Canada’s Long & McQuade music chain must have had a run-in with Toho as well…their Toronto stores ran a month-long “Godzilla Days” sale in June in the early 90’s, with artwork treading that very fine line,, and it went national one year.
Not sure how it changed, but my suspicion is - with British Columbia having a very large Japanese population, the national exposure got to Toho somehow, and the sale has been renamed “Monster Days” ever since.
I find it fascinating when talking about Kaiju-related lawsuits. I remember I picked a report I had to do on the Lawsuit between Universal suing Nintendo for Donkey Kong. It was very interesting but also shows that people who own properties really abuse their power too much sometimes. Besides, why would Toho think some idiot would confuse Godzilla with a parodied character that looks very similar to him? It's just ridiculous sometimes. 😂😂But stuff like this really interests me.
This isn’t me defending Toho - I hate copyright laws in general - but the thing Toho fears most with Godzilla is genericization. If they let too many parodies/homages slide, it gets harder to defend the cases they defend because Godzilla’s key attributes become considered public domain before the character does. It’s what happens to companies like xerox and Kleenex. So, I get it. The only lawsuit in this video that I personally think was overzealous is the subway one.
@@MonsterIslandBuddies Another Godzilla UA-camr I follow is PaperFinz. He made an interesting video on the whole copyright mishap on Godzilla VS. Megalon and how many people assumed it was public domain. He even talked about how Mystery Science Theater 3000 got it.
ua-cam.com/video/NNHbHFLArn8/v-deo.html
But honestly, if it weren't for MST3K releasing their episode of Godzilla VS. Megalon on DVD, I may have never been the MST3K Fanboy I am today. I literally found the DVD at a goodwill in good shape many years ago. I could tell you an entire story on it. 😅
@America Chavez Toho actually distributed MHA: Two Heros and was involved in the production of the movie as well. As part of the partnership agreement Toho had with studio Bones, Bones was allowed to create a "Godzilla" Hero for the film.
I don't think it's really about how idiotic fans are to confuse any giant monster with Godzilla, i think it's more to combat setting a legal precedent that can be used against Toho in future lawsuits. Like, if they didn't go after Comcast, then a future lawsuit could use that as a basis in their legal defense.
And seeing the trend of 'Mandela Effect' idiocy lately, people will remember that Subway commercial segment, forgetting it was a commercial, and relate it's 'cheesy, low budget look' as a scene from a Godzilla movie, which also promotes the late 70's, low budget movies, propagating the image that Toho has been desperately trying to escape.
No one should use Godzilla because I’m scared of what they would do with him. (Then again, Toho’s done some weird stuff. Those Erotica manga for example.) But I’m glad we have lawyers looking out for the big G, making sure nobody other than the rightful owners uses him.
What manga?
Erotica what now?
@@kirbo4252 He’s reviewed it on this channel before. The one where a couple is “having fun in bed” and Godzilla breaks off their roof, looks inside, and just walks away. There are more, but that’s the weirdest one.

I'm from Guam, and for a small time there was a Mascot called "Guamzilla". I didn't think much of it but later on I saw that it got rebranded to "Gumamon" I'm wondering if Toho had anything to do with the change.
How can Godzilla be in public domain I don’t understand I forgot how it works?
Godzilla isn't in public domain
I know
Okay first off Andy is super wicked adorable. Oh my gosh he's just so precious.
That parade float is totally Godzilla.
Lawyers are the only thing on the planet that's more frightening than Godzilla. At least Godzilla takes a break and goes off in the ocean to rest after doing his thing.

I was waiting for mention of a case against a car wash in Jacksonville, AR called Gwatzilla, complete with a very godzilla sign. Later on, the sign was changed so that it showed a car going through the wash within a godzilla silhouette (or something like that)
I remember when I was a kid, I was watching Billy and Mandy. There was this one episode where this dude mentions "Monster Island" and I was like, "Hmmm, I wonder if it has godzilla monsters". It did, Rodan, Mothra, and Godzilla were there, yet I don't know if any more were there. I wonder to this day...
1. What is the name of this episode I saw.
2. If the people who made it asked Toho for permission to use the monsters.
It’s strange that Warner bros got a lawsuit before buying the rights
I think a Godzilla stops being a Godzilla if it doesn't have dorsal plates, doesn't have a green/black/dark blue coloration and a more generic lizard-like body or head.
The mechaHobzilla monster looks like the MMPR Dragonzord on the can.
Anyone remember the time that universal studios tried to sue Nintendo over donkey Kong, but the courts ruled that there was no way to confuse the game with King Kong because universal studios won a court case proving that he's public domain and then came the 1976 remake
I can understand Toho making that last wine company relabel their bottles, but forcing them to destroy the wine inside seems to be insane.
People DON'T seem to be understanding that Godzilla is a trademarked character. Trademarked means you CAN'T profit off the characters.
I've noticed that the content Toho copyrighted was making money without a license. Toho DOESN'T mind if Godzilla is used, you just can't profit off of him.
My family sold a loose leaf tea called greenzilla which ironically was a red roibios tea ( caffeine free w/oranges and lemons crushed into it )
It was our number one seller and house tea at our restaurants. It just had the zilla name added to green tea so not sure if on a bigger scale that would fly .

I'm really not surprised with advertisers blatantly plagiarizing Godzilla in that Comcast ad, after seeing Hormel's "My Pepperona" ad. They just took the "Weird Al" Yankovic song parody "My Bologna" and replaced "bologna" with "pepperona". The guy in the commercial is even playing the song on an accordion.
This was a very interesting video. I cant wait to see what's next. I do have a couple of your videos to watch. Some because of me being sick and not wanting to do anything. But I'll get to it eventually.
Surprised there was more than one case of people thinking that Godzilla was public domain. Wonder why?

Love you bro, been watching you for 5 years!
Godzilla is my all-time favorite fictional character in movie history. I was born on September 23rd, 1997. I deeply care for previous Godzilla films from the Toho films and MonsterVerse Godzilla films.
I wonder how much the rock band “Gojira” has to pay a year in order to keep their name.
I laughed so hard when Andy was putting his mouth in your ok sign. I had to watch that part twice.
Godzilla dammit! Now I'll have that stupid freaking Subway jingle stick in my head for weeks!!!!
It’s been almost 2 years since I saw one of his vids lmao. I’m happy I’m back.
What I remember most about Subway's $5 Footlong campaign wasn't the jingle or that commercial, but rather a picture I remember seeing on PeopleOfWalmart of an enormously fat man wearing a t-shirt that depicted the phrase "Five Dollar Footlong" above an arrow that was (predictably) pointing down.
Pharoahe Monch sampled Gojira Tai Mosura from Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992) for his song Simon Says, which resulted in a lawsuit that got the entire album the song was on locked away for over two decades.
For the subway one.
I'm pretty sure the distance between not Godzilla's hands is more than a foot long
Wait, you mean Toho didn't sue Nickelodeon over Rugrats' Godzilla spoof Reptar?
I thought that they actually did, guess it was some weird mandela effect memory.
It’s ironic that they sued WB considering their current arrangements
One of the issues here is that in the U.S. at least, the concept of Godzilla is pretty much the same as "giant monster" to most people. While the concept of kaiju is just a general archetype and one that lots of people can use, the general American public only knows one kaiju worth noting. It's not dissimilar to how the whole tokusatsu superhero aesthetic is thought of as "Power Rangers" in the U.S. It's what happens when an entire genre or archetype gets boiled down to one specific reference point.
