Great video Paul. I realized years ago that an extra inch of barrel length matters way more in the bedroom than actual hunting. Shot placement is everything when hunting, that also holds true in the bedroom. You guys out there SHOOT safely.
Paul always answers the questions rattling round in my head. My thinking is...30 or so fps more isn't much...however, if you do several things that add 30fps each...then you have made a significant difference. Then again...some of the ammo I've been seeing....if you are willing to pay a few bucks per round...you can get just about any speed you want out of a 45.
I had been waiting so patiently for this since his last 45 acp video. Thanks Paul. This was must the video I needed today. Im definitely mass sharing this video as it was fantastic.
The reason for the lower velocity change for +P is that velocity gains are nonlinear. The faster the base velocity, the harder it is to find gains compared to it. The energy gains are likely more intuitive, but energy is not a useful metric for terminal ballistics in most cases.
Shooting a 1911 based 45 at 100 yrds is pushing it as far as accuracy goes, be it with 230, 185 or even 165gr bullets. Still glad Paul does these great in depth vids! BTW those plus powers sure did sound like they had some extra omfg to them~1100+ out of a 45 is cooking!
When I was younger, I could hit targets at long distance (I'm sure it was not that good), but today, I'm lucky if I hit the paper 50 yards. 100 yards is a waste on anything less than a rifle. But like Paul says, most encounters are based on the FBI's 7 yard scenario. As long as I can stay good at 25 yards, 7 yards is a breeze.
I think he's breaking the sound barrier with .45ACP. Madness. Speed of sound goes down the colder it gets. 20°C (68°F) the speed is 1130 ft/sec or 344 m/sec 0°C (32°F) the speed is 1087 ft/sec or 331.5 m/sec
I shoot .45 gap and it operates at the pressures +p 45 acp, 1050 with 185 grn hydrashocks in a 4.5 inch g37 and 1000 from the 3.5 inch g39. 200 grn gold dots run 1000 and 950.

I have a large quantity of 45 ACP and the same number of 45 Auto Rim rounds, with 185g bullets loaded to +P levels. In my Smith and Wesson 625 revolver they have been very satisfactory. They did good workout to 75 yards on small silhouettes at the 2nd Annual Lehmi County Big Bore Revolver Shoot. In other words, I have witnesses. The 625 has a 5 inch barrel. I do not know their velocity, but it is enough that I did no correction for drop out to 75 yards. I like this load for field work.
Really enjoyed both parts of this video. I would like to see a video about shorter barrel .45 acp guns to see if a more typical concealed .45 will also produce expansion at a potentially lower speed. Thanks for the videos though.
If I was gonna carry a compact .45 I'd probably go for soft points or plain ol' ball. 230gr hollow points don't reliably expand out of a 5" bbl, I wouldn't bet on 185gr expanding reliably out of a 3.5" or shorter bbl. And forget shooting +P .45 out of a compact pistol. Ouch!!
Even though 45 acp is low pressure round in 180 gr it holds its own againts the much more modern and high pressure 40 SW.Very light bullets can be loaded in 45 acp to produce 700 plus ft lbs , more than 40 or 357 Sig.
With an 11inch barreled Reising m50 smg I typically see about 100fps more in 230 grain compared to a 1911. With 185s nearly 200 more, but it tends to break firing pins rather quickly.

You sure know how to crush a man's spirit. Years ago at work, a guy was celebrating his 49th birthday and everyone being happy. He was joking about being a "dirty ol' man" as I think there was a TV skit on that at the time for being 49. I hadn't said anything, and he asks why. I tell him "Happy birthday, but I really couldn't think of anything else. After all, 49, that is older than my Dad."
This was one of the most universally informative videos that I've seen in a long time, however I have to say that I missed watching the entire procedure
Great review, Ty. I shoot that Remington +P with a 97B. It's very satisfying and always gets the job done. Glad to see your numbers and hear your analysis.
Winter is the best time for shooting videos because not only do we get the nice wispy smoke from each shot, we also get the steam-vent exhale after each shot to remind us of trains.
I love them long slides! I don't particularly care if it does make much difference at all or not they're just badass! I want an AMT Hardballer like Arnold carried in the first terminator movie! That gun is the long slide that made me fall in love with the 1911!
That Remington +P is a spicy box. Imagine that from a PCC; another point of contact for more stability, a longer sight radius for more accuracy, AND a longer barrel to add even more velocity.
A lot of semi-automatic pistol ammunition doesn't gain *that* much velocity from a longer barrel the way revolver ammunition does. They'll pick up some, but not as much as a lot of people expect. Those small cases tend to be loaded with faster powder that's more efficient in typical handgun-length barrels. That said, I do agree that the Remington +P ammo Paul shot here was a lot hotter than I expected, and it might be an exception to what I just stated above. Only one way to find out, and that's to try it.
@@Kaelland I figured the velocity wouldn't change much. The accuracy difference at 100 yards is more what I'm curious about; Paul already hits really good with just a handgun (I know he's got years of service and experience, but it's still impressive). The Hi Point 4595 would be an interesting guest star.
As any reloader can tell you, longer barrels make a bigger difference when using slower burning powders. A lot of factory 9mm, .40, and .45 ammo is designed for 4" barrels because those are the most common lengths of semi-autos on the market. A prime example of this is Hornady Critical Defense, which is meant for 3"-4" compact handguns while its counterpart, Critical Duty, is meant for 5" full-size duty sidearms. I'd say that 6" barrel will make a bigger difference when using +P ammo meant for 5" barrels than it will using +P ammo for 3.5" barrels.
Well I enjoyed part 2 every bit as much as part 1. I have to agree that the necessity of taking a 100 yard shot with a 1911 is remote at best. But as an intellectual question it is interesting, and any reason to test one's self is a good reason. Please keep up the very good work.
Paul it's interesting what things will provoke discussion and argument in the gun community when it to ammunition choices. It's not all that different than the boating community about changing propeller pitch for more speed in a planning hull boat. In reality it's arguing over minutiae that can change from day to day.
I'm still curious about the performance of 230 grain projectiles in 5 inch vs 6 inch barrels. I think we can reasonably infer it would resemble this 185 grain test. Specifically, I suspect that the 230 grain +P hollow points would expand fine out of a 5 inch barrel and perhaps a smidge better out of a 6 inch barrel. I think I would still like to see the presentation, though.
The 45-Auto has a long history of successful use as a target pistol and used by all the military branches. I can remember 5-inch target models shooting consistent 50-yard groups of one and a half inches. I would expect that hasn’t changed. The longer slide has an unmentioned advantage of a longer sight radius. Standard 1911 sights could barely be call sights compared to modern ones. You certainly easily proved 100-yards is not out the cartridge’s deadly accuracy range. If use with a supported rest and quality adjustable sights the accuracy will increase along with shooting at longer ranges too. All it requires is practice and doing it for the fun of doing. Karl Lippard established the 45-ACP 600-yard World record, shooting from a seated position from a shooting bench. With his hands and pistol rested on a small sandbag. Hitting a 600-yard standard rifle target 8 of 10 shots, on September 22, 2012 using fixed open sights and a 1911 pistol.
I reload and in reviewing standard loads against + P it seems that the +Ps are more about pressure than velocity assuring that the gun functions. I was not happy with expansion from my 45 auto so I bought a Kimber and a 460 Rowland kit for it with a 6 in barrel. At 1600 fps and 185 gr bullets it is often too much. The 225s 240s are good. I bought a frame and slide from Brownells and am building a 6 in ramped barrel gun in 10mm,38 super and 9mm. Great presentation lots of information and good shooting.
C’mon Paul! You make all of us wanna be “great shots” look bad with your shooting ability. One thing for sure though, I class this site in amongst the few that I see that I can really trust these days. Thanks for all the informative videos that you make!
I would postulate that if you are shooting at something 100yrds away with a 45 ACP pistol, hollow point expansion is kind of irrelevant. At that distance, merely putting holes in the intended target would be sufficient.
paul deserves to have his face added to mount Rushmore, he was a national treasure a legend! i use 185grn swc loaded to around 1100fps because its super accurate threw my pistol and the ability to put rounds exactly wear i aim them is important. even the fmj loads are good for self defense at 1100fps you get great penetration and a nasty wound channel. they tend to cut clean 45 cal holes threw anything not wearing armor.
It's good to see that Paul has plenty of magazines for all those projectiles and nice to know he's owned them all for a long time.

He was joking about being a "dirty ol' man" as I think there was a TV skit on that at the time for being 49. I hadn't said anything, and he asks why. I tell him "Happy birthday, but I really couldn't think of anything else. After all, 49, that is older than my Dad."
Great follow up video, thank you!
This was one of the most universally informative videos that I've seen in a long time, however I have to say that I missed watching the entire procedure
Thanks Paul!
I'm going to miss this man.
Thank you Paul.
thank you. You read my message about 185 gr 45 acp bullets
Thank you for this testing & teaching.
Great job Paul, Merry Christmas!
I love them long slides! I don't particularly care if it does make much difference at all or not they're just badass! I want an AMT Hardballer like Arnold carried in the first terminator movie! That gun is the long slide that made me fall in love with the 1911!
Paul is so good at telling you the way it is. I like Paul.
Thanks for another great video, Paul. I always look forward to the meat target.
I love my long barreled S&W model 25
Excellent analysis
45 long slide with laser sighting, the Terminator.
"Uzi nine millimeter."

You know your weapons buddy!
"40, 000 watt pulse rifle".
I think that's what he said anyway. It's been a while.
Good stuff!
im definately switching to them remington rounds very impressive.......
The Increased content is great!
He said that
125gr, JHP out of a S&W 686 with a 6" barrel were all inside the 8 ring at a 100yds. The Coonan model 'B' with a 5" barrel does quite well also.
Thanks for the great content Paul, as always very informative.
paul deserves to have his face added to mount Rushmore, he was a national treasure a legend! i use 185grn swc loaded to around 1100fps because its super accurate threw my pistol and the ability to put rounds exactly wear i aim them is important. even the fmj loads are good for self defense at 1100fps you get great penetration and a nasty wound channel. they tend to cut clean 45 cal holes threw anything not wearing armor.
AMT used to make The Hardballer and The Longslide. I wanted the longer one so bad but they were out of my league at the time.
