- In this video, Professor Barlis reviews the coronary angiogram procedure recovery. We have previously had a video on what a coronary angiogram is (Link below). We discuss some important considerations for patients after the procedure and in recovery and demonstrate how the tube called the sheath is introduced into the radial (wrist) artery and what needs to occur after the procedure. Patients who undergo this procedure are typically advised to rest for a period of time afterward to allow the insertion site to heal and to avoid certain activities that could increase their risk of bleeding or other complications. The video also emphasizes the importance of following any specific instructions given by the healthcare team and contacting them immediately if any concerning symptoms arise.

Ive had this procedure done twice, i got 2 stents placed in my heart on the 9th june 2023 as i had a major heart attack which i was told im lucky to be alive, then i got another one in on the 24th july 2023. Its good to be alive!
Thank you for your feedback! All the very best!
Just wondering why they could not do all 3 stents in 1 go
@@lorrainerane2158 2 were placed in on the 9th of June cause I was having a heart attack and alot of damage was done to my heart and the other in on the 24th July cause that another artery needed some. I've been told I might need this done again so fingers crossed my big list of medication will prevent this☺️
@@lorrainerane2158 I think they were waiting to see if it would heal on it's own with all the medication, I'm not a 100% sure. I'm just glad to be alive.
@@freespiritwithnature4384 No the procedure did not hurt as your given a mild sedative, I did feel like tugging etc as the line went through my veins but that was all.
Hi Peter,
I have been following your educative talk. I am a retired anaesthetist, underwent coronary angioplasty into LAD for 90% block 16/12 ago. Now I’m on Clopidogrel, Statin and Amlodipine 2.5mg. I studied nutrition extensively post angioplasty losing 10kgs to 57kg. Nutrition self taught, fibre, antioxidant, anti inflammatory phytonutrients, nitrate containing food and many more nutrients, moved onto heart healthy seeds, nuts, lentils, legumes, red spinach to reduce blood sugar, LDL, BP. I increased intensity of my exercise to walking, running, sprinting. Breakfast is seeds & nuts, fenugreek water with lemon juice, gooseberries. After six hours I have healthy lunch, one meal a day. I have been walking, running to complete 35km in 7hrs and 40min without cramps. I also drink Balsamic Vinegar.
I do take 2gms of turmeric powder with black pepper powdered in food, Vit D3+K2 55mcg with EVOO Cold Pressed, of course 10 cloves of crushed garlic. This is my routine to say my energy at 70yrs with a stent is unbelievable. Never been so fit in all my life. I have learnt to match medical prescription to reduce the behemoth of health without fear but with nutrition. All my blood chemistry is normal. I wish I had knowledge of nutrition before never taught in medical school. I am astonished to say our allopathic colleagues lack of knowledge on heart healthy nutrition matches the general public including cardiologists. Preventive medicine is not heard which starts in the kitchen and then exercise complemented by weight.
You are doing a wonderful job educating people.
Best wishes,
Bas
Is that the only medication you're on? I am on a lot more than that, i was told you can't take turmeric if you're on anticoagulants.

For the heart health It is very important to keep omega 3 to omega 6 ratio at optimum.
I would look again at cholesterol. There are many studies that show your HDL and triglycerides are a much better indicator of heart health; not ldl and statins do very little to actually help, but have lots of side effects. I would watch some of Dr. Ekbergs’s or Gary Tau s videos for more on this subject. In health!

After the angiogram I was informed that I had fairly poor 80 and 90 percent blockage in my heart arteries. I had scheduled a triple heart bypass surgery. I left the hospital in 5 days. I am now doing many weeks later physical cardiac therapy twice a week. I never had a heart attack and didn’t know how bad off I was. I am glad I did the bypass and am growing stronger every day. Good luck and you can prolong your life expectancy.

How are you doing now do you still have pain and is the scar big
U don't need to have any symptoms to have a heart condition
I had two stents fitted after a major heart attack in April 23 , 6 months in I am good , I am an engineer not a medical professional , and was fine for 30 years , so did not have a clue , this channel is the best I have seen on UA-cam , educational and helpful , simple language which I understand so thank you all
Just had this done January 16 2024.. I came here several days before my procedure and this was THE BEST EXPLANATION EVER! I'm back reviewing this video and it was exactly as you said! No blockages thank God! Just recovering from the procedure is the test because they used my dominate hand and it's easy to forget NOT to use it lol.. Thank you for your brilliant explanation!
I'm having mine on February 8th , should I have to rest after the procedure? Thanks
@@lizbetheddy7268 ABSOLUTELY! NO LIFTING, PULLING OR PUSHING! VERY VERY LIGHT WORK IF YOU MUST! BUT DO NOT USE THAT'S ARM OR HAND AT ALL AFTER THE PROCEDURE! Also wear something very comfortable and easy to slip on and off because you can't use your hand! I don't know about the groin only the hand.. I'm still having slight pains in my palm, they said it was ok but I'm going to get checked out BUT so far so good!
@feliciaskeen5097 thank you, I'm having on my hand as well... I'm 44yo but my stress test showed abnormal and arteriosclerosis, so I have some blockage, they will do this to know where exactly and how much.. Great advice, thank you. I had emergency angioplasty stent placed on 2 January 2024. Great explanation. 👍🤩
Thank you for the information 6 years ago l had a bypass & a year ago a stam l feel ok thanks for the good professors.
The dr told my husband he needed a stent, but after months of research he’s problems wasn’t a stent it was a pace maker that he needed. Now he’s doing great ❤❤
This was VERY informative and helpful! Thank you for the time and care that you've taken to create this critically important content!
Thank you, your channel has helped support my husband in his recovery by giving us information at a perfect pace and in a really easy to understand manner. You are so informative and clear when explaining. Time is never a virtue in the midst of a busy hospital environment with never ending caseloads.
I’ve had a stent fitted although just before I kept my self slim and fit, but I was under unbelievable stress in my personal life due to my job and recent relationship break up bottom line my blood pressure was very high, I had a rupture in one of my arteries. My cholesterol has always been low. Bottom line stress along with high blood pressure is a killer so changing my lifestyle and job was a must if I wanted to stay alive.
Had 2 stents placed after being diagnosed with scad which i believe isnt a classic heart attack . This video is true to life in everything you have explained. 4 weeks down the line and im feeling ok but fairly exhausted
You explain this procedure well. My angiogram went exactly the way you described it. Removing the sheath from my radial artery was extremely painful. That's what I remember the most. The rest is a blur.
I'm sorry to hear that you had that pain. I just had this done three days ago and was amazed at the complete lack of pain. I'm wondering if they ramped up the drugs before removing the catheter because I remember a brief moment of watching the screen (very cool), then the next thing I remember is waking up back in my room. I'm extremely grateful that they kept me so comfortable. I hope for that for you too if you ever need to have this again.
@@bethb9248 It's usually more painful when people have narrower arteries due to dehydration or other things. Or sometimes the medics being stingy with the lidocaine.

Through the groin I had done twice horrible experience. 😢😢😢😢 I never want to do that again 8 hrs first procedure 2 hours the second horrible experience but I'm so happy the gave😢 me life again

They don't normally sedate. Were you having high BP or something?
@@goodyeoman4534 it was conscious sedation so I could take directions but no recall afterwards
They give pain relief if in pain which can make you sorta not all with it. Maybe that's what they mean

Thank you doctor, for an excellent explanation.
Clear and concise.
I had This procedure done to see did I have a blockage and Thank GOD I didn’t have a blockage and didn’t have to have a stent, they couldn’t fine out through my wrist, so they had to go through my left side groin area but doing well!!
If they can't get into your radial, they'll go femoral. But they prefer radial as it carries less bleeding risk and means you can sit up after the procedure.
Now it makes sense, wristband wise after having a stent fitted 7 days ago. Thank you Dr.
Just had a stent put in proved trickry to do saved me going to Sydney for open bypass.. Thank you for your time posting this info on you tube... and a big thank you to CCU at Port Macquarie Base Hospital.

Having this done again and this time I am buying an arm sling. Really needed one. For comfort and also to remind me not to use my hand/wrist/arm.
I had this done April 2024. My widow maker was 99% blocked. I wasn’t surprised because I was having horrible chest pains prior. I have blockages on 3 more arteries but they were too shall to stent.
I undergone this procedure 3 times leading to angioplasty implanting stents 5 stents in my case with 5 artery blocks now almost 14 years after the procedure, 2010,2011,and 2016
How u feeling now?.........they say that the dye causes kidney damage.......did it do any harm to ur kidneys......put I stent 2months ago....thank u❤❤❤
Wonderful Explanation!
Great explanation of what’s involved in the procedure. I remember that pressure band being quite uncomfortable at the time and I did have a bit of bleeding when the pressure was released, but things were fine after a few hours.
Thank you for sharing.
Peter, they went in through my left wrist radial artery when I had a stent put in nine years ago. I recall it was a painful experience as they removed the device from my wrist, ended up having a queried "compartment syndrome" of my forearm. Some minor discomfort for a short time but better a life gained.
we do sometimes use the left side but generally the catheters travel down to the arteries in a more straightforward approach from the right side. This seems an uncommon but important complication whereby there may have been a bleed or bruise that placed pressure within the confined space of our forearm. Thanks for sharing your feedback!
I had two procedures inserting stents. First was the heart attack in the LAD or "widow maker" artery where the blockage was requiring two stents. Couple days I was having bad chest pains and feeling as if I was getting a bad flu, no energy, achy, nausea. Third day I started vomiting for couple hours I couldn't stop. Thought I was poisoned so I knew something was wrong. I called ambulance finding out it was the heart attack. Recovery was couple weeks I just took it easy. Procedure was through the groin not wrist.
Now 4 months after I started experiencing fatigue, dizziness and shortness of breath. I did have a follow up 2 months after her attack and was told I did have more blockage in another artery but was only 50 percent blocked. So I kinda knew these new symptoms were gonna be another stent. So I went to have an angioplasty the balloon thing done to find out about more blockage. Two more stents needed on this trip. I experienced some discomfort during this procedure, it actually hurt and I felt nauseous in the middle of the surgery. So now 3 days later I feel great. Through the femoral artery again so the leg is sore. But I should be back in action next week. Now I have 4 stents in there 😮. Maybe that'll hold me off for a while!
Do your leg or groin still hurt
Hope you're doing okay? I advise calling 999/911 straight away if you get chest pain or clamminess. Don't wait. They like tog et you in within TWO hours if they can, "door-to-balloon time".
Thank you so much for this very informative video. i had my angiogram today at it was so simple and painless. This viedo help go into this procedure with open eyes .
I had this three days ago in afghanistan at age 73 and i fell comfortable no. The bph has reduced around 120/80. I also have been bypassed five years ago in india.
I have had 2 angiograms, last 1 was about 8 years ago and they went in through the groin and afterwards I had to lie in bed for 6 hours with "sandbags" on top of the site. Good to see a less invasive method used these days.
My radial wrist developed a low grade bruise that hasn’t much healed in ten days. I figure there’s a lot more going on inside that I can’t see. Zero pain. I don’t drive right now abuse of a back injury and the medication I’ve been on. That tourniquet thing was fascinating…I’m used to seeing the twig and handkerchief type. This thing was bloody tight. That hurt. I had to wait an hour before anyone would release any pressure. Over the next hour they released the tourniquet a bit at a time. Then I had to wait another hour before I got to go home.
They gave me lidocaine to numb everything and something that sent a heat wave down to my fingertips…felt like my hand was being jammed into an oven. But it passed in about 5 seconds….
Same here. Got bruise which hasn't healead even after 1 week. Also having pain in entire right hand.
This is the BEST explanation and demonstration I have seen. Thank you!
I am 41 years old. Had chest pain off and on for years. Just had a wrist catheter done. No blockage but found out I was born with a myocardial Bridge. I was already on a metoprolol. Now put on a calcium channel blocker too. I hate taking pills but now on both. Hopefully they help.

I haven't had this procedure. I was in hospital this week for chest pain from two blocked grafts from a bypass in 2007, they went in through the groin because it was a tricky and complicated procedure. I did have chest pain afterwards because they did alot of stretching of the grafts but it was gone by the next day, they put stiches in my leg at the artery which caused unbearable pain while it was being done and is still sore four days after and black from bruising. The whole thing was not pleasant and was not pain free, I suffered more pain from this procedure than I did from the pain caused by the two blockages. I feel like a different person after this but not in a sense of better, I've withdrawn from life and people. it was not a very good experience and it was done in one of Sydney's top hospitals.
Oh my sorry 2 hear that, have ur pain gone away yet
I just got out of hospital this week and had this procedure. The doctor said I had 90 % blockage.

can you please discuss what other options there are if you have kidney disease and cant have the dye?
Great question, I will discuss this in an upcoming video, essentially non-invasive stress tests can be useful like stress echocardiogram and myocardial perfusion scans (nuclear medicine scans).
@@HeartMattersmy cardiologist and nephrologist have assured me the low amount of dye is a non worry....I just had a calcium score of 2 yesterday. Is that a good sign? I already had an abnormal stress test..Thats what started all this

Can you give some tips on the to dos and no dos such as how much work to take or exercise, travel, etc. Thank you!
How are you doing now ? And what was the reason for getting a angiogram? In 30 as well and I may be getting one because of all this heart pain after covid
A wonderful suggestion, I will Khan. You are so right, there is often significant anxiety and preparation before and during the procedure, people may be in hospital for a few days with a heart attack and then a stent is placed and soon after they are sent home. We will cove some of these important aspects including getting back to exercise, driving, flying etc Thanks for your suggestion.
Did you take the vaccines?
this man is very caring .
I had sequent please neo dcb done on 16 Jan. I got bed rest for 4 days after that at home just to be on safe side.
I would invest in wrist support with metal brace because it's very important to keep the wrist safe and straight when you sleep. It's very easy to bend the wrist and undo the healing process if u jolt it asleep, or awake for that matter.
After how many days of an angiogram can we start working out (more specifically weight lifting)? No blockages, minor bradycardia and artery shrinkage due to smoking.
After how many days can we restart gym workouts with weights?
I was told 5 days
Weight lifting gradual after 30 days I would say just to be safe!
Doc you didn't mention that the wrist strap is extremely uncomfortable and your hand would be very uncomfortable as well. In my case, the blood flowed under my skin and the nurse ran to call the surgeon to take a look at my wrist. The doctor immediately applied a second wrist band and my hand discomfort was so uncomfortable for the next few hours.
More info. This procedure was done in my left wrist approximately four years ago.
I’ve had unknown chest pains for 4 years. I’ve had an MRI no dye, 2 CTA, 1 stress test, 2 echocardiograms, calcium score of Zero, multiple labs / all negative. All my test come back perfect. I’m 40 years old. The pain is sharp and sometimes pressure. They want me to have a heart cath next. Since everything is negative, should I bother with a heart cath? Thank you.
Right, I have a similar story.. All other tests are negative, and now I'm going to have the procedure tomorrow.. I decided to go ahead with the procedure to rule it out.. I don't think my arteries are blocked, so I'm pretty interested in what the next step will be after it comes back negative

Hi Heart Matters … I see you are based in Australia. I had a CABG x 3 done 10 weeks ago in Brisbane…. I went in to do a Angiogram and turned out the artery on left side of heart was like 90% blocked… so they decided next morning to do CABg. I am on asprin… Clopidogrel , metoprolol and a statin. I am not a fan of medication and prefer to do what they do in USA for some patients …. Diet and excercise. I have been to GP few times to review the meds … I suspect b blocker is doing this ….Nausea, diarrhea, migraines…. I have reduced the b blocker to half tablet morning and night no difference…. I have a sinus rhythm and no afib…. HR is stable also… (even when skipped a dose … whoops)I have been told by GPs to man up and deal with the side effects (Hawthorne here Brisbane) are others been told the same as well? I was going to wait until 3 months and start to taper of the b blocker…
