Phil's bass lines are so unique that fits Rod Stewart's songs PERFECTLY! Listen to DO U THINK I'M SEXY....very simple but original w/a tight pocket and fantastic grove!
I'm 73yrs old, I still remember Phillip chen, playing with Jimmy James and the Vagabonds, in the mid '60's. Awesome bass!! 🤯 You made me happy 😊 Play on brother, play on.
Phil ,, I wanted to tell u how Jamerson has changed My life I was in Hitsville in Detroit on 7/5/13 I think Jamerson touched me while I was there I have played guitar since I was 10 after hearing Jimi Hendrix im 54 now , after I left that day I started listening to Jamerson I bought a bass a few weeks after that and have been studying Jamerson Since ! RIP James great job on the Jamerson Tribute CD !
I've been a Rod Stewart fan since the 70's and love the albums with Phil, it's weird now realizing that in all these years i never saw an interview with him, i had always assumed he was Filipino, i had no idea he was Chinese but born and raised in Jamaica, it seems really odd hearing that accent coming out of him. If you closed your eyes you could picture a member of the Wailers sitting there talking.
Yours were exactly my thoughts, - except I had assumed he was Chinese. I too had never heard an interview with him, & "Yes" hearing a Jamaican accent out of him is . . . odd to say the least lol. Da ya Think I'm Sexy would not have been the song it was, without that bass line. I've only now found out that he has passed, & I'll look to find out what happened. RIP phil. - This guy was a purist, made his own guitar, & play bass seemed the only thing he ever did. Never swerved from that. - Love it. . . .
Congratualtions to be included in the Rock Godz Hall of Fame. You may not know me, but I did meet you when your mum passed away in London. Your brother Franco and I are good friends and have known each other since college days. Rohith
There's was lot more going on with Phil's quick little Bruce Lee reference. Buce Lee teaching a young student, who dutifully follows his instructions: "Kick me. Kick me". "What was that? An exhibition? We need emotional content. Try again". "I said, emotional content, not anger. Now try again! With me". "That's it! Now, how did it feel to you?" Student contemplates the question: "Let me think." Bruce slaps the kid on the forehead: "Don't think. Feeeel. It's like finger, pointing away way to the moon. Student looks at Bruce's finger: Bruce slaps the kid on the forehead: "Don't concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory". I think Phil was trying to say this: When he's on stage in front of a huge crowd, he takes it all in and he absorbs all of it. He doesn't concentrate on the finger. He observes all that heavenly glory.
@ForBassPlayersOnly I made a few minor mistakes on the quites from Enter The Dragon, and I forgot to mention the other part of the movie lesson that Phil referenced. It's not just about being situationally aware and observing one's opponent and the surroundings. Bruce' character was also telling his student to be fully present in the moment, to feel everything, and to experience everything. It's about performing everything that you do with feeling and emotional content. I think that's what Phil meant when he said that he kills it on stage. It is the same idea behind the lesson in the movie. Bruce studied philosophy, psychology, and drama in college. He was very interested in the marriage of thoughts, feelings, emotions, motivations, and reasoning, together with our physical actions. He felt that robotically performing physical actions or activities with no feeling or emotion attached to it weakens one's physical performance. He believed in doing away with the rigid, repetitive forms of traditional martial arts. He felt that each martial artist must find their own way to express themselves in their own style, and there was always more than one perfect way to fight. Bruce was a passionate dude, and so was Phil. RIP

An Englishman of Chinese descent who speaks with a Jamaican accent. How utterly fucking cool!!
Chinese, born in Jamaica, how do you figure an Englishman ? He did make it to England but born in Jamaica.
Phil was the greatest!
