    In this full review of the Breville Barista Pro, we see if it's able to better the previous generation Barista Express in brewing and steaming performance. This beautiful Damson Blue Barista Pro will be the subject of this in-depth review, and we'll leave no rock unturned in determining whether it really is the new best semi-automatic espresso machine from Breville, or if the Barista Express still retains the crown.

    For the last few weeks I have been watching many videos on Expresso machines including lots of your informative videos. We finally pulled the plug and bought the Breville Pro in the color " Black Truffle ". Absolutely looks amazing in the kitchen and fits under our cupboards with room to spare. We are enjoying this machine and it's many nice features but our coffee skills are still a work in progress . With your experience , what would be a good grind size and grind time to start with to get a slow extraction. I realize it can depend on the bean but looking for a good starting point. Thanks for the great videos.

    This helped me choose the pro. I genuinely don't care too much one way or the other about looks. The speed of steaming and the additional grinding options seem like a no brainer for a $100 difference.
    I've had bad experiences with the digital readouts on various appliances (though this is my first espresso maker), so I'm hoping that wasn't a bad choice. Time will tell.

    Hello There.I purchased the Barista Pro watching many video's about dual boilers and many other models..I finally choose the Barista Pro Model BES 875. I liked your video's for many different machines .But the one on the Barista Pro made me purchase this espresso Machine .Also in the blue version. Looks pretty good.I bought it from a well known store.My Barista Pro does not have a 4 hole steaming wand ,also no retractable power chord.That was disappointing.I should have bought it from Breville direct.My first attempts extracting a good espresso failed miserable .Coffee flying about all over the place.
    I ordered a Dozer a scale and a leveller from Amazon.That should be a big help. I will succeed in this. I also have a Philips 5400 .Automatic Espresso machine ,which I will keep, because it is very good and the grinder is much quieter then the Barista Pro. Greetings : HR.

    What a jewel of a YT channel. Thanks for the great content! Question: How do you evaluate the quality of your extraction? I find the old school gage on the Barista Express very useful to see right away whether the pressure is right. Is there a digital representation during extraction? Like a pressure indicator? Or how do you evaluate the results (other than tasting obviously)? Thanks!

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  3 роки тому +4

      Hi Franz!
      Many espresso machines opt to not spec a pressure gauge, as it really is only a rough guide. Timing your shot and weighing the output will always be the most accurate method, and luckily, the Barista Pro has a shot timer built right in+

  • @hotrodlnkn4944
    @hotrodlnkn4944 Рік тому +3

    I've had a Barista Express for 7 years or more and still going strong. Had to send it in 1 time about 4 years ago for service. Very impressed with the performance and durability!
    1 very important improvement that I would recommend is having an extraction timer! I have to use a portable $5 timer every time I extract. Even though I can almost tell exactly what the extraction time will be based on the pressure I just don't get why this "Pro" with the digital display would not have this. It's very important to know extraction time to determine shot quality... thx.

    I was wondering if you could expand on two points you made. The first is how I should preheat the portafilter for 10 minutes in the group head, should I uave the shot ready to go in the portafilter? Is this necessary for every cup of coffee or shot being made?
    Secondly, the cup warming function up top. I read that thr hot water dial cam across as a cup preheat. But it didn't explain how that worked.

      That will depend largely on what grinder you choose to pair with the Dual Boiler or Appartamento.

    • @LifestyleLab_

      I haven't experienced that because I never steam for more than 20-30 seconds, but its likely just a capacity constraint of the thermojet that it needs to stop briefly every 45 seconds or so.

    Very nice video. If I make two or three cappuccinos a day, morning till night, would you recommend leaving the machine on for up to 16 hours at a time, so it's always ready? If I turn it off and on again (causing it to cool down and heat up repeatedly), am I likely to shorten the life of the machine? Or is it leaving the machine on all day that will affect its longevity?

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  2 роки тому

      These machines are meant to be temperature cycled multiple times a day as they are designed for home use. There would be no appreciable benefits to leaving on all day, and potentially some downsides

    News Flash!!, you can leave the portafilter in the group head for hours but it will never heat it (or the cups on top) as this model does not do that. It's the only thing i have noticed with my new one vs my BES860. However this one makes a much better coffee. Must say it's quieter in every way except the grinder is twice as loud. Got the Pro and it wouldn’t complete the initial flush. Called Breville and the response was to send in the broken machine for a new one. Seems to be a common problem and not something you’d expect from an $800 machine.
    The steam/water knob has some play in it and takes quite a bit of force to switch between modes. Seems like it’s only a matter of time before it breaks off.
    Installing the portafilter is a two handed operation. One on the portafilter and the other to hold the machine in place. Otherwise the machine just slides around the countertop. Which Breville has used a suction cup on the Pro like they did on the Oracle.

    Apart from the built-in grinder (and display), is there much difference between the Barista Pro and Bambino Plus? As they're both thermo-jet, is brewing and steaming performance basically the same? I was considering buying this, but am now thinking about spending a little more and getting the Bambino Plus and a good grinder (maybe Niche Zero) instead. My thinking being that if I find my skill improves and I want to move on in the future I will already have a decent grinder.

    How do you like the barista pro compared to your rocket appartamento? Espresso quality and ease of use? Getting an espresso machine this holiday but has been back and forward between the two for the following reasons:
    Barista pro: reasonable priced and an improvement in steam power compared to earlier models, BUT with the same 54mm portafilter size and I don’t necessarily need the build-in grinder since I recent purchased the niche zero.
    Appartamento: Love the look and the standard 58mm portafilter which can makes the transfer of ground coffee from the niche dosing cup directly into the portafilter mess-free, BUT price is at the slightly higher end and it requires professional descaling.
    Hope you get some of your thoughts, thanks in advance.

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  3 роки тому +1

      The Appartamento is more work day to day to run and maintain. It takes at least 25mins to heat up before you can pull a proper shot. But if you maintain it and aren't in a rush, it's an absolute pleasure to use, can yield a slightly superior shot, and will last a lifetime.
      The Barista Pro will be faster to heat up, has the advantages associated with a PID, and will be easier to use and clean, but is definitely more of a consumer machine compared to the prosumer Rocket.

    In one of your video you mentioned that the transition from extraction to steam is about 13sec. I am not sure if I recall correctly. Anyway how do you measure that? After extraction I need to wait about 13sec before using steam wand? Another question is this steam wand more powerful than the Gaggia or Rancillio?

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  2 роки тому

      Once you’re finished your shot, you will turn the dial on the side to steam mode, it will take around 10-13 seconds for steam to start coming out
      The steaming will be about the same speed as the Gaggia (but the transition is much faster on the Breville). The steaming on the Rancilio is much more powerful, but again with a slow transition speed because it uses a traditional boiler setup

    Love your channel content! Is there any way to increase the water temperature beyond the maximum PID setting through the menu? The maximum water temperature I get is around 160F at the group head (measured with a Thermapen), which is about 30-40 degrees less than optimal. The espresso is more lukewarm than hot, despite running a blank shot to warm everything up or leaving the machine on for an extended period of time. This is becoming a bit of a dealbreaker as I don’t think the temp is high enough to really extract optimal coffee goodness. Who notices this?

    • @rox9975
      @rox9975 Рік тому +2

      I run a couple blank double shots and leave it there for a few mins after each one. It does get warmer but you’ll notice that the more shots you do the warmer it gets and you can tell that by the way the coffee looks and also the brew time increase. When it’s cold my brew time is around 20sec / 2 shots. After a few more shots the brew time increases to around 30sec and coffee is much more creamier. I always make coffee for everyone else and last one for myself 😝

    Question...in an earlier video when you were comparing the differences between the Express and the Pro you asked and answered the question if the price increase between the two was worth it. I still had a lot of hands on time with both machines before making that last comparison! Just couldn't get the machine in studio yet.
      My opinion is that the Barista Pro is clearly a more refined machine, and clearly has advantages when it comes to steaming speed, but if you already own the Barista Express, its likely not worth the cost to upgrade (but that's up to you). Many high-end machines do not have a brew pressure gauge. Take my Appartamento for example.
      Using a scale or volumetric shot glass, and the built in shot timer on the pro, you can easily tell whether your shot is running with the desired flow rate, which is a far better indicator of espresso taste / quality. TLDR: no, the pressure gauge is not something I miss having on the Pro

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  3 роки тому +3

      The Express is the better cash / value machine when both are being considered at MSRP.
      The Barista pro really only provides an advantage to those who regularly make milk based drinks, and only with respect to speed, not overall quality

      @zsharp1772 3 роки тому

      Awesome! Thank you so much for your time. Also, I was looking at the manuals to both and the express says it has 18 grind settings by using the wheel and likewise the pro has 30. However, what I don’t see anywhere is discussion about the conical burr grinder adjustments. From the picture it looks like both have approx. 9 burr adjustments so, does this mean that technically the express is capable of 162 grind settings and the pro 270? Lastly, now that you have used them both for some time which one do you think would outlive the other?

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  3 роки тому +3

      You are correct, they both also have an internal burr adjustment. The advantage on the Pro is that the steps are smaller, making dialing in more accurate.
