Esperance: Spearfishing & Surfing at Australia's BEST Coastal Spot | WA (Free Camp) | S1E11

- Welcome back to another week of Lifeadrift! So awesome to see so many new subscribers! We have left south Australia after an epic month of diving and camping, we loved it there. This week we crossed the Nullarbor and the border to Western Australia, we headed south and ended up at a free camp: Membinup Beach, eastern of Esperance. We could not recommend this place enough as its free and dog friendly. We caught some bad weather, lots of wind the first few days, so we ended up surfing instead, cat paddled onto her first wave by herself here. But then wow we got some good weather and we were on for some rock fishing, we only caught some herring haha but it was a bit of fun. After some herring fishing the ocean was so calm and we got the tinny into the ocean and went out to go spearfishing. Gill found an amazing Harlequin fish that he speared, you have to watch this one. Found some green lip abalone and some roe abalone, first time trying roe abalone also. We finish up with cooking the harlequin and a abalone for dinner and its the most amazing meal.

The Abalone Potato Cake way from a fellow diver who put that method up against a Chef from a Resort.
His method won, the chef had to agree.

Harlequin are one of the tastiest in the sea! They also come in a couple of different colours, red with yellow spots
This is our 1st time encountering harlequin fish they are so delicious and fun to hunt

Re: Abalone.
My best two ways are tenderised, seasoned and cooked whole like a steak (4 to 6min) then sliced after they relax for 1min.
Or
Sliced into 2 or 3 potato cakes
(Sliced lengthways)
Then tenderised
Then coated in Tanco Fish seasoning.
Then fried in bacon fat (or olive oil)
So tender it's almost hard to believe it's abalone

Season
Coat with your Kelloggs flakes
Cook in olive oil and try that too.
You already have that stuff on hand 😉

Great vid there, plenty of abalone on the south coast to keep you fed, I will give that recipe a go…. Was it a whole tub of sour cream? I suggest getting an abalone knife or use a big screwdriver so you don’t blunt your dive knife 👍

Yea there is so many in different places. The green lip live in much different county to the black lip.
I put two big table spoons in for two green lip so if you stay around that ratio will be fine. And as much garlic as you like haha.
My dove knife is passed the days off being sharp. I recon that a screw driver would be sharper haha 😂
and yet comfort is of great importance for you ... a cleaned area, a fence from the wind and more!
Plenty of good spots to see as you keep coming west. I hope you've allowed plenty of time to see as much as possible. I'm based in Albany, the south coast beaches are some of the world's best
We are at east bay camp ground atm. Very close to you. Yes we are taking our time and seeing as much as possible with our dog.
Great little spot. Plenty of good whiting, flathead and squid in close. Roe abalone all round the rocks and some good reef fish in the centre of the bay
Saw one of your other comments. Some reef in centre/east of bay holds some nice size dhui. Don't even have to leave the bay

Does your sounder have a chart plotter for gps coordinates? Could give you some marks

This is just a butane one from anaconda mate. Hasn’t missed a beat the last few months. We also have a LPG stove in the van
I hope the fisheries officers don't see the Abalone you must be very close to the limit champ. The fines are horrendous good way to ruin a holiday. If you have a licence?

Read the ‘olive oil’ labels carefully, what your using in this video is a blend of olive oil and refined other vegetable oils that ain’t good for you. 100% extra virgin olive oil much better for you:)
