  • Osaka is known as Japan's kitchen and for good reason! It's loaded with some of the best and cheapest restaurants and street stands anywhere.
Enter Dotonbori, the old entertainment district of Osaka that's also ground zero for cheap and easy to find street food. John Daub and Kevin Riley, a long-term resident of Osaka take their stomachs down the Dotonbori strip. We also introduce a very Osakan word: "Kuidaore" meaning eat until you drop!
    Street food on Dotonbori:
    ★ Takoyaki
Called "octopus ball" by newbies to Japan, these round treats normally come topped with a tangy thick soy sauce, Japanese mayonaise, and dried fish and seaweed. Some shops go even further adding half boiled eggs or mountains of green negi!
    A bowl of 6 to 8 balls costs 380 to 450 Yen.
    Recommended shop: Creo-Ru Takoyaki
    ★ Kushikatsu
Another Osaka specialty you can find at a few stands. It's skewered and battered meats and vegetables deep fried until golden. pTake each skewer and dip it once in the special bath bin near the table or register. You won't be disappointed! Vegetables start at 60 yen and meats at 150 yen. Large Tiger Shrimps can go for 380 yen for one! Prices are listed on the menu outside the shop.
    ★ Gyoza
Osaka has it's own variety of dumplings. What's different? It's cheaper and made in Osaka! 180 yen for 6 gyoza!
    ★ Ramen
A few shops serve up hot bowls on the street side. Get a ticket at the vending machine for about 600 yen and enjoy!
Recommended shop: Kinryu Ramen (The one with the Dragon!)
    ★ Crab legs
Who would have thought crab was big in Osaka, but one of the most dominant restaurants serve them char-grilled right at the front of the street. The also have kani miso or "crab brains" served in a half shell. 500 yen for that. Yum.
    Recommended shop: Kani Doraku
    ★ More!!!
The more you walk around, the more Dotonbori will surprise you.

Dotonbori in Osaka is an amazing place to get street food, cheap and easy. In my latest episode, Kevin Riley and I tried takoyaki, ramen, kushikatsu, gyoza, crab and crab brains ... and there's so much more to try! I wrote down prices for each item in the video. I hope it's useful! -John >> ua-cam.com/video/F9To5UjWhUA/v-deo.html

tormentedzombieowl hehehe~ I don't want to give out the details, but it didn't help my plumbing, if you know what I mean :P and anyway, Japan has the best toilets in the world! onlyinjapan.tv/the-amazing-japanese-toilet/ That "kanimiso" may kick some people in the stomach and others may just love it. Be warned -- then try anyway! At its worst, it'll clean you out so you can eat more of the other good stuff. -John

Japan has always been my dream to go there since I was a young child. Thanks to anime and UA-cam I've learned so much to help me on my visit to Japan. I'm thinking about studying abroad in college this year. It would be great to go to otaku clubs and eat ramen all day! Thank you!

    • @zipp4everyone263

Jennifer Banegas There is so much more to japan than anime and ramen. Ramen is just a very small part of the cuisine and the flavors are different from place to place. My favourite thing in japan other than sushi is okonomiyaki for example.
Btw, otaku isnt something that is considered good in japan. It can even be used as a form of humiliation depending on whom you speak to as they are considered unable to take care of them self's in a country where self-reliance and hard work is such an important thing. But of course there are amazing anime stores and wonderful places to visit if you love that kind of thing, but otaku isnt a word you want to use in every occasion.
IF you ever go, go to akihabara and try out their manga and anime district! Or Harajuku for some awesome clothing and cool teen-rebellion stuff!
And learn some japanese before you go, they are generally quite bad when it comes to speaking english and spoken japanese is extremely helpful. Not only is it good to know, having a good pronunciation is considered polite and might even make it easier for you to get friends or more help if you ever need it :D

How wonderful! This brought back so many memories from my trip 5 years ago. I was in Kyoto, and there was a stand selling Wasabi and egg takoyaki, it was the most pungent and ridiculously spicy takoyaki I had eaten in all of Japan, but the people there just ate it like nothing.

"kuidaore" actually means "eat until you go bankrupt"
"kuidaore", "kidaore" = "buy clothes until you go bankrupt", and "nedaore" = "build house until you go bankrupt". These three constitute one set. Many Japanese are also misunderstanding it, tho.

I believe in a later episode, he said he was from Canada. Also to add to why his accent hasn't changed, he is living in a country where not many people speak English. I'm sure when he speaks Japanese he has a Japanese accent however because not may people in Japan can speak English he most likely doesn't hear the mixed accent of Japanese-English that often. If he had lived in the southern part of the US, England or Quebec Canada, his accent most likely would have changed.

I am always fascinated and curious of Japan and its culture by watching anime and reading mangas. I would love to visit it someday. 😊

Hi john i love all your videos coz i like japan so much but haven't been there but still i feel like i'm in japan when i watch your videos. but japan is so expensive, you said dotonbouri is famous for cheap food but i find it so expensive as tiny single piece of shrimp, and those crab legs cost so much of yen. i wonder how much do the food costs at the top restaurants in japan. lol!!

+Peace Zone Thanks for watching and happy to hear that you love the show!
Japan is the home to the most Michelin Star restaurants in the world! You are getting good food here. It is much cheaper than a restaurant. In general, cheap is one coin, 500 yen -- for a meal. The kushikatsu was a little pricey, I thought.
You can save money by eating from grocery stores and convenient stores but -- why travel all the way here and not EAT well!! That's one of the top reasons to come to Japan -- EAT \(^_^)/ where did you visit in Japan?
By the way, I sometimes write for tokyocheapo.com which is a great budget site for visitors! Highly recommend. -john

+Peace Zone The food in the video is all cheap! 6 dumplings for 200 yen, that's only about $1.80. In general 100yen = $1 but it's actually a bit less (actually it's about 100yen = $.88)

That guy has the most stereotypical "American Japanese" I have ever heard. Lol Of course it's not bad, same as a Japanese person speaking English with an accent.
