  • Deity Microphones just released a new dual channel wireless microphone system. This kit includes two transmitters and microphones which transmit to a single dual channel receiver. This is one of the few dual channel systems available for under $700 USD. In this episode, we dive into the details and find out how it sounds, how well it remains connected without interference or dropouts, and how it works with various cameras or recorders.

    *Important Notes* UPDATE 2 May 2019: DEITY just released the v1.1 firmware update which helps improve the self-noise performance, improves the meter, and improves the input limiters. The meter is much larger and easier to use. The limiter is more transparent and avoids distortion. My copy seems to still generate more self-noise than Andrew's (Deity) test copy so we're still working on how to improve that. I don't work for Deity, but I would like to see this system improve. It is an incredible start.
    Do not use the distance tests in the office and on the parking garage as sound quality tests. I had the output on the receiver set incorrectly for a camera with a 3.5mm stereo microphone input. Should have been set to DSLR rather than "RECORD". Because I had it set incorrectly, the phase of the second channel was inverted which is why the audio sounds so odd. Nevertheless, the distance test is still valid.
    Andrew from Deity was asked about the internal batteries in an interview with Gotham sound and he said that the battery is actually user replaceable. One removes 6 screws on the TX or RX, slides the metal portion of the case off, and the battery has a terminal which can be removed. He also indicated that Deity would supply these batteries, though no reference to the price. You can see the details here: ua-cam.com/video/rc4HCo6gPjE/v-deo.html
    When I say "Digital Wireless Systems" here I mean digital systems which do adaptive frequency hopping like the DEITY Connect. There are digital UHF systems which don't do frequency hopping such as the Audio Ltd. A10 system.

    High latency is important when mixing with sources that aren't delayed. You can't, for instance, mix one of these microphones with a wired lapel mic because it will sound awful - like you're in a bathroom. That's the consideration people need to make. 19ms is about 20 feet.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 років тому

      Fair point, but for narrative work, the mix usually uses the boom or the Lav for any given line of dialogue, not both. Are you referring to some other scenario?

    • @PeowPeowPeowLasers
      @PeowPeowPeowLasers 5 років тому

      @@curtisjudd A group discussion requiring more than one microphone. Say if you had this system but had three guests and were mixing down to two channels, you couldn't use a wired lapel mic for the third person in that scenario. The delay would ruin the audio. If your mixer doesn't have adjustable delays on the inputs you'd have to ensure post production were informed. I run Lectros and they're only about 3.5ms delayed, but even that small amount requires correction.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 років тому

      Got it, makes sense. So you'd need to be all Deity channels or fix it in post. Not ideal.

    Great Review, and great information thank you Curtis. I will invest on this system, I already preordered it here in UK.
    My only concern at this point is the self noise that I can clearly hear with my Sennheiser HD 25 headphones but it sounds quite clean trough my desk audio monitors.
    My question is, how the self noise compares against systems like, Sennheiser G3/G4, Rodelink etc...?
    I'm used to work with Sennheriser G3 in the studio where I work, and they are "ok" not perfectly clean but usable, is it better or worse than that? Are you able to do a side by side comparison?

    It’s nice to see that Diety is trying to bridge the gap between consumer and pro wireless. This seems like a great package for an extremely low price. Despite the self noise and limiter issues (which I’m sure they will fix), I’m still iffy about the 19ms delay. I’ve used the Sennheiser AVX before paired with a boom and other G3’s and it sounded terribly echoey. I know you can delay the other tracks to match them up but you’d have to find the exact delay of your other wireless and subtract that by 19 to know how much delay to set. Also if everything is delayed by 19ms, would that be noticeable when synced up with the picture? Many questions...

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 років тому +1

      Thanks Chris. If everything is 19ms off and you record sound independent of camera, the latency becomes a non-issue as syncing in post corrects that issue.

    I am genuinely unimpressed. Those external antennas are certainly not the most elegant solution I've seen. And dropouts already at 25m is really not great. And since the noise floor and latency aren't superb either, I think I'd prefer a couple of non-dual channel systems.

      @curtisjudd  5 років тому +1

      Every professional system I've used that is able to achieve decent range has external and internal antennas. They don't generally prove to be an issue in any way in my work. The 25m range was in a worst-case situation and some have suggested since I posted this video that it was problematic that I was wearing both transmitters. The idea is that by spreading them apart from each other, like when connected to two separate people, that the range would likely increase. I'll need to test that to be sure.
      The latency didn't appear to be a problem in the sync test clip and would be a complete non-issue when recording dual system sound as I usually do for film projects.
      The noise floor needs some work and Deity have already contacted me and are looking into how I recorded and are testing some of the other units they have on hand. We'll see what they find out. I appreciate companies that allow me to review their gear and do not try to edit what I say in my public videos. Deity appears to be using this as an opportunity to improve and I appreciate that.
      So is the Connect a perfect product as of today? The copy I have is not. But it is pretty good today and based on Deity's response, I suspect it is going to be a very good choice in the future when they sort through the issues.

  • @VideosProva

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 років тому +1

      I haven't used the UWP system enough to make a really informed decision and they're quite a lot more expensive than the Connect so that's a tough one. If you've got a bigger budget, the Sony is possibly the least expensive pro dual channel receiver system before the Connect came along and likely perform well. They transmit via UHF frequencies and don't do active frequency hopping so are a bit more work to set up and operate in RF heavy locations. I don't like that Sony wires their lavaliers differently than just about everyone else so you have to use mics specifically wired for Sony.

    So, here's a rookie question;
    It says in the specs that the Deity Connect records at 48KHz/24bit.
    Now, does this mean that it won't work with the Zoom F6 if I recorded in 32bit float?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 років тому +1

      Hi Charlie, good question - the Connect coverts the audio from the lavalier mic at the transmitter to digital (48kHz, 24-bit), then sends it wirelessly to the receiver which then converts it back to analogue. Then if you were recording to the F6, it would convert it back to digital (whatever sample rate you choose, 32 bit). So yes, it works without a problem. But the lowest quality conversion in the signal chain, in this case the connect, is what will determine your audio quality. That's all the theory. In practice, the lavalier and preamp in the connect are the bigger limiting factors in my testing.
      All that to say, yes, it will work.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 років тому +2

      This is a whole lot easier to use than G3/G4 and has a dual channel receiver. G3/G4 will potentially hold on to signals a little longer through doors and walls, but that depends on so many other factors that you cannot rely on that for certain. The Deity actively changes its frequency whereas G3 has to be set manually and doesn't change until you change it so it is less able to adapt to changes in RF interference in real time. I prefer the sound of the Deity mic to the Sennheiser ME2II. G3/G4 has replaceable batteries (each person has to decide whether that's and advantage or disadvantage for themselves). The G3/G4 seems to product a bit less self-noise and does not have an analogue limiter as far as I'm aware.

    I figured out how to reduce less mic noise floor, set the transmitter to +0 and the receiver as well. And on the zoom f6 32bit mode set that as well to +0 and let leave it there. Then in Adobe audition or iztope rx9 when you set 23lufs you do bring a little noise but with denoise or clarity plug in you can remove it without messing up the dialogue.
    When you gain the deity transmitter say +15 or +21 as they say in the deity video you are adding noise floor. So leave everything at +0 and you will have a nice sound.

    Compare to Saramonic?? What about the Sony UWP series that Saramonic obviously knocked off? Granted, the Sony models, especially with the dual-channel URX-P03D receiver, are more expensive than the Saramonic, but still... (I don't know if I'd trust Saramonic anyway.) I don't know, I think in any case I'd go with the Sony just for the more robust UHF bands and the fact that you can quickly pop in extra AA batteries that you can get literally ANYWHERE - alkaline, lithium, or rechargeable NiMH's for the best of both worlds - without having to wait for your components to charge up during lunch and cutting it close, if you have, say, an all-day lecture taping.

      The Saramonit and DEITY are aimed at different groups. The Saramonic Blink500 Pro is mainly for video people who want a simple wireless audio solution. The DEITY is for people who want a bit more control over settings to optimize performance. The Sony UWP, as you noted, are different because they transmit over UHF frequencies and can be assigned to a range of frequencies which is a huge benefit to adapt to different situations.

(is that can damage the internal battery of the receivers?) can i run the 8 channels that i need for this, at the same time? i mean, this 8 channels, will not fight for signal? if you believe, tham the deitys can handle this can of work, what other brand can i use for this? Hi Adrian, I would be hesitant to use this system for the show you describe here. I have not tested with more than 2 channels so if I were you, I would be sure to test extensively whether this will work. I'm skeptical that it will work well with that many channels. We covered run time in the video so I won't bother you with those details again here. Yes, you can power the receiver by the USB-C port without damaging it. UHF wireless systems are much better suited to using a lot of channels like this but I don't know of any I'd trust for about the same price of the Connect system with 8 channels. Have you run into this issue with your unit? I've tried researching a lot but seem to be able to find little info/solutions on said topic.

    Impressive for the price even if you factor in the Cons. I know this is shocking but you can get a lot better sound and performance for 8X the price from the UHF wireless guys. Regarding your test, I would not have put two TX on as you walk tested the system because that is a good way to create a lot of intermodulation products. Obviously the system manages mapping different frequencies to prevent that as much as possible but I wonder if it caused lower performance? Regarding dual diversity, I question if that is real because if it was dual diversity, when you removed that one antenna there should have been no RF signal loss, but the signal went completely away until the antenna was put back. Anyway, it seems like a significant new product. Get them while you can (if you know what I mean).

    I am considering purchasing the Connect system, but I have a couple questions that I haven't found a clear demonstration of yet...
    - How well does it handle light-of-sight issues? I know 2.4GHz systems (and others) tend to have problems in large open areas when the transmitter is hidden in a back pocket, etc. Basically blocked by the talent's body.
    - I read somewhere that when operating both transmitters, and there is a dropout on one, the other channel also drops. Is that true?
    - I have also read the included lav mic heads are quite large and the cap doesn't come off, (e.g., like on the Senneheiser ME-2), making it difficult to use hidden. Is that true?
