Painting Aaron Blaise as Santa Claus using Gouache

- I hear those sleigh bells ringing.. It’s the first day of the 12 Days of Proko! Today I’m painting Santa Claus using gouache paint. I’ll give you advice on using the medium and take you through the whole process, from photoshoot, to thumbnail sketches, color comps and final painting. Disney animator, Aaron Blaise, was kind enough to be my Santa model!

ABOUT YOUNGARTS
It’s a really good program for high school students. Basically what they do is find about 100 or so really talented artists in high school and they fly them out to Miami for a week for an amazing artistic experience. It goes beyond just this one week. Once you’re an alumni, you’re part of the group. They try to nurture these artists and help them out as they’re transitioning to become professional artists. They connect the students to mentors who are well known in the field. Many win money to fund their artwork.

Great video, it's awesome that you two know each other. Can you make more videos about painting in gouache & tiling? I loved the anatomy & figure drawing, and I'd pay for a class on this too.
Hi Proko ok so I’m in high school and I need an anatomy course for collage and I’m home school.my parents won’t let me watch the anatomy vids because they are citing it a little close could you make some vids were the model are covered a bit more.thank you God bless
you have to use a larger amount of water so it won't get dirty fast-Full glass
Had a blast with you on this. Great job on the final piece! Looking forward to more collaborations soon :)
+The Art of Aaron Blaise Me too! See you next year!

Awesome video, Stan! What a great channel.
Marco Bucci we stan stan
Aaron Blaise is like the daddy of all Internet artists
I wish he had more recognition on youtube
His channel is amazing
I am... woah..... This kind of made my day XD I really like seeing how people work on their thumbnail stage, it was something I thought people only did for animation, comics, and designs, and since I discovered that it wasn't the case, well... everything turned out so much easier. It was a big facepalm "Of course people do thumbnails for illustrations and everything else!!! Why wouldn't they?!".
Also, to see Aaron Blaise is always a pleasant surprise.
Sir Canavar I'm not good at doing thumbnails I wish I was
could you please do more gouache tutorials ? i found it really usefull
Agreed! More gouache tutorials. this one is so useful.
oh god your profile picture i love it
magnificent
Definitely! Do you have any courses in gouache?
He doesn’t sorry.........
I've watched so many gouache tutorial videos and this one has literally been the most helpful to get that painterly effect! Good explanations!
Incredible video with so much insight and a fun way to explain everything. Thank you for making it!
You are truly amazing. Watching you paint and seeing the way you handled the brush & brushstrokes was almost enchanting and hypnotic. Incredible and so inspiring. Amazing work as always.
Really enjoyed how thorough you were in this video. Love the gouache work !
Thank you for sharing all your steps and thumbnails! It was really useful!
I love gouache such a fun medium.
Both of you are awesome! Thank U.
Proko, share more gouache videos please. :)
Blown away by this. Merry Christmas
This was so enjoyable to watch! Thank you Proko. Makes me want to give gouache a real try. im mostly familiar with acrylics.
Both you and Aaron are so amazing
Nice to see all the stages and well explained thumbnails/colour comps. Fantastic level of rendering skill. Great examples of brushstrokes and imperfect perfection ( if that makes sense). Glad to hear such a wonderful program exists and benefits someone. Great video.
Nice to see more gouache paintings. Really nice process video and advice. I'd love to see more about gouache.
Awesome video Proko! So helpful to see this process.
please do more gouache paintings, I really love it!
I like how you use a lot of paint where as with most ppl they use more water so their process is lot more like watercolor while yours feels like oil/acrylic paint.
Love what you said about using references. People forget that you don't have to copy the exact thing when it's more fun to be creative & experimental with it. Also great hearing your story and glad you could make Art a career. I hope I could too 😊💕
Well that was some amount of education in seventeen minutes! I'm just starting to try to get to grips with gouache (_and_ as part of training for oils) so this was very well timed, for me. I think I'll revisit it a few times, soon. Thanks!
My two favourite online art teachers doing a collab? It sure is Christmas! Thank you Aaron and Proko for doing this :)
Please more goache videos like this ! This is so beautiful!!!
Beautiful as always
You are skilled even with gouache? Dramatic faint. Lovely painting and lovely model ♡♡
I like this video this is the kind of content i like it shows the whole process not just the end and in fast foward about to watch it again thanks
Thank you for this walktrough! I was trying to do a portrait with goauche but the first study I made, didn't turn out the way I wanted it to. Next time, I'll be drawing more thumbnail sketches and paint more color comps.
Gouche is such a nice medium, great to see you painting with it! I love James Gurneys and Watts Atelier Gouche paintings, as well. Hope that my portraits will reach their level sometime as well.
I realy enjoyed this Proko! I can confidently go and use my gouche colors now.
I was just about doing some gouache master studies and your video helped me tremendously, and reminded me that I need to block in the big shapes, and wanna be more concerned about the general ambiance of the painting, than the level of realism. Thanks proko !
I love all this information and the paintings!
I'm loving this. It's really cool!!
Love love love this!!
Thank you so much Proko, this video was really helpful and insightful :) I'm looking forward to the upcoming ones !
That was great! Thanks for sharing your process on this. I've know about thumbnails for years and never really used them, but I think I'll start now.
Thanks for showing some of the process of gouache! I've been curious to try it.
This turned out so well! I love it, Stan.
please do more gouache tutorials, especially for portraits.
This is the best Christmas gift ever!
Two my favorite artists!
I had fun painting along with you! Thanks for the great vid!!

This has gotta be from a dream, Proko painting Aaron with Tchaikovsky playing on the background. This made my day.

aaron blaise is amazing. his pics here are hilarious
MORE GOUACHE VIDEOS PLS! SO GOOD!
8:37 - 8:38 ... then, add details
That was quite a "draw the rest of the owl" moment.
Amazing.
i simply love his style
awesome. thanks for the information in this video. It is very helpful.
This was so fun to watch. Woowwwwwww Talent
This was amazing, gouache reminds me of acrylics
I've never used any paint yet, just pencils, charcoal, and a little dabble into ink, so it's great to see gouache in use. A great demonstration, and a fab end result. Thank you. Good fun, as always.
Amazing
Yay ! I love Aaron
I am an artist and you inspired me to make art tutorials too! I hope the art community can benefit and learn from my videos like how you inspired others! Love Destiny ❤️❤️
Beautiful!!!! Thank You :)
Damn man, that was awesome.
wow gorgeous! you really should definetly make some color tutorial!
damn that turned out nice
He actually looks like santa ❤️
Watching this made me realize... I water down my gouache WAYYYYYY TOO MUCH O_O probably because I never use gouache straight from the tube, and I never ever clean my palette >
Beautiful work Proko! Would you mind explaining about the coloring of the face? How you choose colors and where to put them? Thank you!
This inspired me to go out any try some gouache
This has been recommended to me because I've been watching Aaron Blaise
Mean skills. That was fun to watch
Not sure why this was recommended to me in April but I’m not complaining
When is the painting course coming out?
Expected nothing less from a Watts Atelier instructor :) More guoache please!
"Most satisfying thing _ever"_ - Cue a 15 minute video of Stan doing nothing, but peeling painters tape from the edges of paintings ;)
I love 🎅
you're so amazing 😆
i am once again begging for more gouache painting vids
I loved the video! Thank u for putting it up! Im curious to know what that metal tray is called? I'm unable to find it..
Aaron Blaise
which is your favourite art medium. I'm confused about acrylic, oil, watercolour and now gouache? any suggestions?
1:43 woah, the artist? crazy stuff
Haha, I thought Proko must be some foreign holiday I never heard of
Fantastic video Proko! I was curious, when you say "Convenience colors", is that how you approach most of your paintings when choosing color? And do you always use the primarys? Ive been having some issues with muddy colors and I think thats because I don't pick them beforehand!
PROko is is the type of guy to flex on everybody without knowing it 😔
MORE GOUACHE PLEASE
THE TAPE.... ITS SO TRUE!!!!
Lol, I now know who that is! Sweet!
so helpful!! Much better than any lesson I had in high school or college 😍🐆
lmao and those thumbnails are better then my finished stuff
Please do more gouache tutorials🙂
So fascinating watching your process, and to see how you use gouache so differently from my self taught technique. Great tip about having the paint sit on the wet tissue! I'd love to know what type of masking tape you're using. Every time I've used tape it's been a bugger to get off cleanly.
It's called painter's tape. It's less sticky and easier to pull off than normal tape.
I've been looking on Amazon but all the masking tape I've found seems to have at least one reviewer saying it's rubbish for art work. I suppose I'll just have to buy some and test it out. Cheers.
Is it ok to lay gouache so thick? It may crack.
Yes.
I've always wanted to get into gouache but never had any luck with the brushes, what sort of brushes are suitable for this thick gouache painting style?
Hey Proko, I just wanted to say big thanks for doing this, it's super useful! I just posted my first portrait painting video and I just hope I can be as half as big as you one day on UA-cam
That's awesome! Thank you, I hope you like my new video, Proko is my inspiration
Thanks bud! I appreciate it :)
oh hey, you're doing videos now too? that's awesome, i've been following you on dA and artstation for a while now
That's dope! Thank you, a lot more to come
quick question, who was the guy that was dancing in the beginning at your explanation do you know? His form is gorgeous and I was mildly inspired to do some movement based art with his likeness
Lol i love ur tree 🌲
Wow! I have been following you for a while and didn't know you were born in Ukraine! Greetings from motherland ;) Love what you're doing! And thank you for your tutorials!
How do you keep your gouache wet when applied? It dries instantaneously when i use it.
Do you always do colour studies? Even for oils?
