BEAUTIFUL! A subject very ordinarily depicted in a photograph can be turned into a wonderful painting is proved by the Artist's masterly brush strokes!!!
This a very helpful video. I keep seeing reference to "tiling" when I research gouache painting. That what it looks like anyway. This is also one of the very few time-lapse art videos that's actually instructive. Thanks.
I am amazed at the pixelated looking outcome. I have been attempting to learn portrait painting and have only done one Gouache portrait so this is impressive to watch...from the starting dark values to the ending. Thank you!
Truly phenomenal piece this alone inspired me to pick up the brush again, thanks for that. I would love to see more of your process as it's quite enchanting.
Thanks a bunch, Skyphic. Super glad to hear that it inspired you to do some painting. I'm wrapping up a larger oil series right now but plan to get back to these smaller works which are much more suitable for documenting. Appreciate the sub!
Great work. Love the style. Particularly like paintings where the subject and the background overlap in places. Hope the plans to stream again come together. As an artist myself who is always looking to learn more I'll be keeping an eye out.
Thanks JustAnotherLevel! I share your feelings about gouache being super intimidating. I only started using in the past year, and I'm still figuring it out. But it's a lot of fun. I encourage anyone interested in gouache to read whatever James Gurney has to say about it and to check out his video Gouache in the Wild (for purchase on Gumroad here: gumroad.com/l/gouache). Here's a particularly helpful post about dealing with the hazards of gouache: gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-seven-gouache-hazards-and-how-to.html
Amazing piece I wish I could understand this technique I thought it only works with oils and acrylics and I don't use them but now after watching it with gouache I want to try it out it
Thanks, Amy! Yep, I just used blue, red, and yellow + white. It helps keep a painting unified and also just makes working with color less complex. Tips I've learned from watching James Gurney videos.
Fantastic piece! I love the realism and how you've deconstructed it . I agree with the limited palette concept....use it often. I'd like to do gouache for travel (plane)....I normally work in oils, so would be a pain. It seems the key is to layer confidently by using accurate color ..... "mixing" the color by way of value shifts instead of blending. Is that the idea ?
I absolutely love it! the limited palette, the color scheme and above all the brushstroke! Can you do more with this type of brushstroke? or a tutorial? It's just wonderful ;)))))
Thanks, Arthur! I'm using a butcher tray (www.utrechtart.com/Richeson-Butcher-Tray-Palettes-MP-03066-001-i1008002.utrecht). Keeps everything nice and contained and makes clean-up super easy. I honestly just wish I had a bigger one. And usually I squeeze my colors out onto a dampened paper towel (folded up into a strip) to help keep them wet during the painting session.
This is absolutely amazing!! Do you mind if I draw this?I'm still a beginner so I'd love to try and paint this as a practice, I wouldn't post it online and would credit you for sure!
Thanks Jasmine Foo. You're more than welcome to do a study. And you're welcome to post whatever you make online too. Just credit me with the original ;) Good luck with your practice!
Brett, I'm definitely planning to make more of these. Glad you enjoyed this one. As for streaming, I plan to get back into it. It's just that I'm not satisfied with my physical setup right now but haven't taken the time to make it work better for streaming. Getting that sorted is on my list for this weekend.
I can't say that there's really a specific name for this. It's a somewhat geometric abstraction of a portrait that employs rhythmic mark-making and fragmentation. Largely driven by the brushes I use (flats and brights) and the quick-drying nature of gouache.
Sorry about the anxiety-inducing music! So few options to choose from in the UA-cam music library. I might just need to open up Garage Band and make some simple backing tracks. Can't be dealing with DMCA takedowns. Thanks for the comments though!
This is so technically sound and gorgeous to look at!
Aw thanks so much!
Beautiful! Love seeing what others are doing with Gouache.
Thank you! Fun medium.

Im learning how gouache is different to acrylic. I really like gouache its so nice for layering

I love how it's blockly but when you squint it all blends perfectly & looks so realistic, amazing work, really inspiring
Truly phenomenal piece this alone inspired me to pick up the brush again, thanks for that. I would love to see more of your process as it's quite enchanting.
sub from me by the way, keep it up

Great work. Love the style. Particularly like paintings where the subject and the background overlap in places. Hope the plans to stream again come together. As an artist myself who is always looking to learn more I'll be keeping an eye out.

Awesome work bro!

It's gorgeous!
Thanks Mayu Lee! I wouldn't say there's a name for this "style". It's just me experimenting with some abstraction and brushwork.
Great skill, man
Very cool.
Amazing ❤😍
Bravo Maestro ,.
.
amazing
Exceptional !!
Thanks, April!
Why all the underpainting and overlays?? Wouldn't it be easier to go in with the color you intend, at the start?? Thx.
Did you put paint on a wet napkin in your pallet.... this is genius.
Yep! A little tip that I learned from James Gurney. Check out his UA-cam channel for some amazing gouache demos full of other great tips.
I wish made more printing videos.
WOW...
"Excellent!.
Have you ever been to Madison Wisconsin? I think I saw your work on display
KarBearArt, no I haven't ever been there. And my work's only been publicly displayed in Portland, Oregon. Curious whose work it was that you saw.
very similar style
Must make more of these. :-)
Are you still streaming on Twitch?
Brett, I'm definitely planning to make more of these. Glad you enjoyed this one.
As for streaming, I plan to get back into it. It's just that I'm not satisfied with my physical setup right now but haven't taken the time to make it work better for streaming. Getting that sorted is on my list for this weekend.
nice.
Glitch art in gouache.
what do you call this?
Paul, I'm not quite sure what you're asking here. The painting itself is titled "Mélisande". And it's a portrait painting done in gouache.
I mean what type/design
I can't say that there's really a specific name for this. It's a somewhat geometric abstraction of a portrait that employs rhythmic mark-making and fragmentation. Largely driven by the brushes I use (flats and brights) and the quick-drying nature of gouache.
Just sub. Please do more guoache video.
👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💖💖💖💖💖💖💖🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩beautiful.
