Painting an Airliner in Gouache-an hour before boarding

- People say this looks like the Call of Duty map Terminal MW2, but it's just a real scene that I painted at the San Francisco airport. I got my little tubes of watercolor and gouache past security and the hour flew by before boarding. Luckily they called my group late.

Only time I’ve ever heard someone say they were lucky to be boarding later.
I say the same thing to my car mechanic. Take your time!
i always board quite late since most people just got squeezed in the passage corridor and Cabin aisle in the early 20 min. I'm happy just sitting beside the boarding gate and enjoy my coffee while watching them get squeezed. :P
@Bobby Brady Same, i love to do trasfer, especially in DBX. Love that giant soft carpet and i can finally have some cold drink after a quick stretch. It's so refreshing.
Unless I have a large carry-on or am flying Southwest, I don't really care when I board, the less time I stuck in a crowded seat, the better. I've never really gotten the appeal to boarding first. I like being able to charge my phone and use the restroom in those few extra minutes.
well youre going to wait anyway and arrive at the same time as people who went on the board last 😂

The painting looks far more impressive than the actual scene. Brilliant.
RIGHT?! LOL he is SO good!!!
That's the point of life painting. If it doesn't bring something new to the scene and doesn't look better than a photograph, then what's the point? An expert painter like Gurney can simplify and exagerrate a scene to make it more pleasing to look at.

One of the key takeaways I had in artschool, your scene observation skills must always be better than your illustration skills. As if you can't observe how the ratios, colour values and overall expression makes a scene. You won't be able to replicate it, nor make it unique.
Awesome gouache introduction, you covered it exceptionally well.

@@blackcat-mp7kh Gouache is uhhh... more opaque than watercolor... but they're pretty much the same. You can paint using watercolor techniques (glazing, edge pulling, etc...) with gouache paint... and you can also use gouache as acrylic paint, and it's actually better because unlike acrylics, gouache takes a little longer to dry, which allows you to mix color more freely...

Wow! I'm a young artist and from just looking at how you lay colors and sketch the plane I can learn so much.
Flying is so stressful.. I would find this very soothing to watch you paint before a flight.
Most People: Takes picture of airplane before boarding.
Artists: Paints the airplane before boarding.
Normal people: dont take a picture at all
Bored people (me): just looking at the nice view before boarding.
Plane spotters: looks at the planes landing and taking off (if they are visible)
The painting is beautiful, I love it when classic painting techniques are used to create images of modern technology around us. But what has me in awe here is this guy held a water colour set in his lap and just casually did this while waiting for a plane.
I would be way too anxious to attempt anything like this while waiting for something important and I would definitely spill dirty water all over myself and ruin my day.

I think this video shows that the most important skill an artist can build is that of observation. Not just looking at, but SEEING your subject matter and its interaction with its environment!
