Have done it many times (I have a dedicated closed container with 5% ammonia solution that can be reused many times for this purpose). It works just fine, the strings do not loose their intonation (don't wash them hot!). The only limit is actually the fret wear the D string falls victim to as the first one; then you have to change the bass set for sure.

You're always very helpful. A fan of Picasso's "blue period", also :)

Does it work with domestic ammonia too? (Like ammonia for multiple uses that we find in supermarket) thank you! Nice video btw

Yes it does! Get clear ammonia though and avoid the scented ones.

I've never had that problem so I wouldn't know. This method will clean the strings anyways. Try it out!

Ammonia can be found in hardware stores or household stores. It's available in every region, it's a cleaning product!

With all due resect i think that a drop of dish detergent will work as well
I have worked with silver and ammonia for 40 years ( jewelry ) and i avoid using too much ammonia as it can burn the silver for the container you used i would only use one table spoon of amonia but believe me one tea spoon of dish soap will have enough Alkalinity to disolve all the the grease and dead skin ( nails) on the strings but its important to rinse them very well naturally the water must be hot as oils will resist cold water

@@brucelevine6517 How do you rid discolouration? His strings didn't look dirty and I actually thought the beginning of the video showed the results after the clean but as he's a professional musician, I guess he needs to be more stringent.

Another method is to use boiling water and dip the strings in the pot for 10 seconds.
