I've been doing this for a while too, based off of another video I saw. But I get neurotic about it because ONE SINGLE COMMENT I saw said "won't this hurt your fretboard?" So I also run a piece of card stock between the strings and the fretboard when I do this to both lessen the direct impact and prevent the string gunk from sticking to the fretboard. Probably unnecessary, but it puts my stupid brain at ease.
I did it. It worked for the first time. My strings sounded like new. But after 3 days it went dead again. I tried it again but not worked. It just worked once for me.
I just did this to my bass guitar. The stings sounded really "dead". I did your hack and they now sound nice and "bright" You def got a sub from me! Great hack! Cheers mate!
I'm shocked. This is unbelievable. First I thought that it's another bullshit video. I didn't believe that it would work but then I thought OK what to lose and I tried. Result was amazing. Thank you man. You saved me to buy new strings.
This will save me some money. My round wound strings went dead in a few months on my 5 string but I was putting buying new ones off because they're sort of expensive. Thank you sir
Well, 37 plus years playing Bass now.. And i never really thought about this lil hack your just shared.. I gotta say, I'm impressed .. pretty drastic difference in tone after you did it too.. i was surprised.. this is something you can literally do minuets before a gig yano.. Thankx for this lil tip my Bass Playn Brother!! \m/ ''='' \m/
Whaaaaat??? Thank you! I just got my first bass a month ago and the stock "E" string started to sound extremely dumb. I did this, and it really sounds better.
I have an electric bass and although I just replaced the strings, I do have an acoustic bass that i’ve owned for 3 years and havent replaced the strings at all. I play it not as much as I play my electric, but taking my acoustic to a lot of parties where we sit outside in the dirt by a campfire, theres no doubt that this has accumulated different elements that my electric hasnt been expose to. Gonna try this and see if theres an audible difference! Thanks for the great video! Definitely liked and subbed!
thank you so much for tip, I did it on my bass and it worked just like in the video, it apparently also works on guitar since I showed this to my friend and he said it worked, I guess I wont have to buy new strings for now so again, thank you so much !
Great advice, thank you! BTW, i like my strings best when they start to loose a bit of brightness, with this technique my half dead strings came back to that rich, growling but not-too-twangy sound i like!👍🏿
I love it too when the strings loose that original brightness and with a Jazz Bass you turn off the second bridge completely to get that smooth jazz type of sound, really a warmy feeling. Although when an aggressive tone is required, I would like to get that bright sound from a new pair of strings, so with distortion it absolutely kills it!
That works well. I’m a string boiler for decades. Now I’m going to get an ultrasonic cleaning machine. About eighty bucks. I haven’t seen anyone who is using one but that isn’t surprising. I wish LaBella or Rotosound would kick some down to me but I’m not going to hold my breath.
Yeah. This string cleaning machine has arrived today and it‘ll be interesting to see if it works. I agree with your point about a lot of use prevents the newness capture but since it’s an “ultrasonic” device it may add some new sounds.
I’m very happy to report that the process is a success. It took a half hour. I put the heat on about 160 degrees, water and Dawn soap, and the results are very good. I’m surprised. Now if they stay this way for four to five days then l will highly recommend doing it.
this is a game changer for when gigs come back, thanks man. i’m so jealous of your sea foam green bass, beautiful. greetings from the uk. ps, do you remember the drummer you worked with in the UK mark allis? i think you did a panto gig with him, he is my boss!
I find whipping down the strings with a damped (with very hot water) micro fiber cloth, followed by a dry micro fiber after every time I play gives my strings about double the normal life span... I used expensive Thomastik Enfeld strings and try not to change them more than once every month if I can..
@rufusphilpot - question: your 5 string Xotic was it / is it alder body or swamp? Has a bit more growl than alder and may be alder. Hate to ask geek question . But want to know as I am about to grab xotic . Bass you used back 7-8 years ago I believe is what I am speaking of.
@@rufusbass Great sound. Almost sounded Swamp Ash medium weight.! Great cannel and I recently came across it. Fingerboard Harmony among many others is generally not topic of the day on IG or youtube #shorts.Great Content.
That’s a great tip! My tip for the people using new(er) faltwounds, especially Labella, that sound to bright and keep de-tuning a lot: Take a piece of cloth around a string, hold it tight and rub the hole string until it really becomes hot. Keep this doing 3 times for each string and the sound is much better and kind of „broken in“
THANK YOU RUFUS! Question- how many times do you think this trick is good for? I just did it and it sounds like new, but if it were to “die” on me again cause of my sweaty hands, do you think I’d be able to give this a shot again?
Couldn’t you also just twist the inner steel wire one turn in the direction of the coil winding. But it would require removal of the string. They do this on piano a lot for the Coper string. It’s easier on a piano cause one end of the string is looped where it attaches to the hitch pins.

MIND BLOWING
Just tried this on my 6 year old (!!) strings and they're really bright now!!
I did it. It worked for the first time. My strings sounded like new. But after 3 days it went dead again. I tried it again but not worked. It just worked once for me.
Thank you!!!!!! This fixed my problem!!! I thought my bass setup was dead but with this trick the strings came to life once again! 🙌🏻 ✨✨
great!
Wow... You're a GENIUS...! I just don't get why this video only has 3.7 K views and 222 likes. This is pure gold. Thank you!
Wow, thank you!
Great tip, thanks; Marlowe showed it years ago too.
Yeah I definitely did not invent this-it's been a kinda insider 'secret' for years!

Good one Rufus ! Been doing this about 40 years also.
Awesome trick! Gonna try this on a set of flats that have gotten a little bit too dead for my liking.
Great tip. Tried it on flatwounds and it worked just like you showed. Many thanks
Excellent!
It works!!! Well done man.. you deserve nobel price of physics🤩. Thx for sharing.. 🙏
Welcome 👍

works, I can confirm, you can feel the string sweating out the sticky gunk and sticking to your fingers.
weirdet most useful video I have seen recently
Bass string companies must hate you lol (you saved me 50$ bro thank you very much)
Great hack Rufus! I knew the boiling technic but it's longer and strings can be tedious to be remounted...
Exactly-this is super fast, and way easier
Great video Rufus. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow ! That’s crazy .. thanks
Right on!
Greatly appreciated your video is AWESOME
I appreciate that!
IT WORKS OMG IM SO EXITED THANK YOU VERY MUCH
You are most welcome!!!
Who would have thought? That’s pretty neat

Glad you think so!
Brilliant tip! Much appreciated 😁
You're welcome!
You just got a subscriber! You da man!
Hi, great video! Just one question… is there no risk of ruining or moving the frets by doing it repeatedly in that way? thank you!
Not experienced any fret wear on mine _I don't do this a lot, but never noticed a problem myself...

Hi Gunther- Xotic 5 string in green-alder as I recall yes. With Lollar pick ups

What the heck? Damn dude gonna do that with my basses.

Update: holy moly it worked! Wife doesn’t care that I have disappeared to the basement. I am getting cold and hungry.

Yes, def. works a couple of times ( but with reduced results each time I find..)

Glad it helped!

Shout out to Marlowedk! He started it all!
it’s an old trick…usually they don’t say that it lasts for some days only…
my solution: I use Thomastik flats only, they last forever
yeah nothin lasts forever, but fortunately I have a LOT of La Bella strings in my bass cave ;)
Wow .. ..
