Horses: There are wild horses roaming the west. In fact, the US Government occasionally does round-ups to control the wild horse population. It's doubtful all of those horses would get eaten. Also horses, mules, etc. would be used for hauling cargo in wagons (possibly converted cars, like we've seen in some very rural Euro/Asian countries). Yeah, horses and other beasts of burdens wouldn't just all be eaten. They're too useful.

I really like this video's concept, but some of your points make me smile.
Everybody would be an anti-vaxxer, since, as you mentioned shortly after, no medical supplies would be available, therefore no vaccines either. Populations have been thinned out by plagues before, and there have always been survivors. (And afterwards there's more resources for less people.)
People might consider eating a horse or two, but just thinking of all of my friends, who get angry for me to slaughter my chicken and rabbits and eat them, or who do the "I could never do this!" song I think horses are pretty save.
Bikes can't cope with broken roads, bikes can't pull bigger carts and move weights, bikes can't be used to plough fields and when they are damaged and there's no hardware store around you'll have a hard time fixing them. Horses you can breed, they feed themselves on grass and without roads they don't need shoes either.
And luckily there are today still some people around who know not only from theory but actual experience, how to turn wool into a sweater, ashes and fat into soap,... You may laugh about reenactors and living history folks, but in case of post apocalyptic events you'll be grateful for people who learned how things were and can be done before / after modern civilisation.

Not only would there be a shortage of trained medical personnel and a lack of immunizations and antibiotics, but decaying bodies, poor food sanitation and storage, inability to clean hands/lack of soap, poor control over the cleanliness of lakes and rivers and difficulty in managing human waste would create a nightmare environment of germs and disease.
In the absence of: the ability to beat people to death with your fists, possession of powerful firearms and the ability to use them effectively, both of which result in the ability to take resources from others, the best survival strategy is utility. This means skills and resources. Medical or dental skills not dependent on advanced equipment and medications (i.e. A Medic not a surgeon, and one who knows how to improvise), hunting and trapping skills, esp. if not dependent on firearms, possession of large stores of, or better still the ability to create: tobacco, alcohol/marijuana, gunpowder, candles, shoes/clothes, knives, salt/sugar/honey. Additionally, honey can be used in place of antibiotics to some degree if you understand the proper application.
Long term, since there will still be lots of tools, equipment and technology lying around, an engineering background would be in demand, especially related to the generation of electricity, as would the ability to create and effectively deploy a small militia, fishing, farming and animal husbandry skills, knowledge of field expedient techniques to filter water and manage waste, build long term shelter and other carpentry, masonry and construction skills, blacksmiths, gunsmiths, food storage and education.
Keeping up your cardio is important because you’re gonna be doing a LOT of walking at first.
Finally, the ability to quickly and efficiently kill zombies. As is my understanding.

    10. An interesting idea, which leads to another. Since many tractors run on diesel, people would be making more biodiesel to run them, which means pressing oil out of seeds (including inedible seeds like fruit pits) which means having beasts to turn large presses (the other ingredient deeded for its manufacture, lye, is easily obtained from wood ash.) So not all beasts of burden would be eaten. ) The byproduct of biodiesel, b the way, is glycerine, see 9 below.
    9. We agree on that one, despite the existence of biodiesel. It’s amazing how quickly a freeway will deteriorate without maintenance.
    8. You’re kidding me, right? People wouldn’t spread the word about making soap from fat and wood ash? It’s a very low-tech process. Besides, they’d have glycerine to add to it to make it luxurious! Anyone who could manufacture biodiesel would also manufacture soap as a side-business, basically using the same ingredients in different ways.
    7. Most school kids know that vaccine comes from taking a germ culture from a sick person, letting that culture die, and then injecting a healthy person with the germ corpses, thus training one’s antibodies to recognize and fight that particular set of proteins. This can be done low-tech. The results wouldn’t be as reliable as high-tech laboratories, but it could curb epidemics from wiping out a whole lot more people than might die otherwise.
You mention widespread ignorance playing a role in the spread of the disease. But ignorance would not drop nearly as far as it had in past societal collapses, for several reasons:
First, literate parents teach literacy to their children. Who wouldn’t? In the past literacy didn’t drop, it just wasn’t widespread to begin with. Book or scroll ability did drop, however. But in a similar situation today, the recovery would happen much faster because with practically universal literacy, the demand for books would be greater, and people would go out of their way to support scribes copying books. The first books they would want copied would likely pertain to medicine, along with agriculture, mechanical how-to, and other works of the most practical value.
Second, people today have a working understanding of hygiene completely out of reach to past eras. They know about the existence of germs, and what to do about them. They know that biting insects, unblocked sneezing, unboiled water and unwashed hands carry diseases. They’re not going to let their kids forget anything so important. Even if some parents sluffed off, their neighbors would fill in the gap for their own protection.
Conclusion: while epidemics would happen, they would not be as catastrophic as in previous dark ages. Enough people in every community would have a whole lot more clues on how to prevent them and how to stop them, than people in the past ever did.
    6. Hold on-you’re talking about people using all kinds of sophisticated chemicals, where before you didn’t even believe that they could figure out how to make soap? Even if they could, some of these chemicals would soon degrade without proper facilities to maintain them, while others would be extremely hard or impossible to replace once used up. People wouldn’t just go sloshing them around wastefully.
But suppose, as you suggest, some factory-owner wanted one grand polluting finale in the absence of any government to stop him. He would also live in the absence of any government to protect him. Angry mobs from down river would quickly make an example of him, and he couldn’t bribe them with the promise of jobs, because the currency wouldn’t be any good. Nor would there be any point in manufacturing anything in larger quantities than the immediate neighbors could make use of, because, as you correctly pointed out, there’d be no way to transport goods to distant markets. Specialized businesses and labors are one of the first things to go in a collapsed society; people become more generalists.
    5. Scarcity-enforced diversity would be a bonus, not a bug. The more diverse your community, the more variety in skill-sets, the greater the odds of survival. Indeed, the opposite problem might rear up-too many redundant perspectives in isolated communities. As for geeky pleasures, sadly, even if you belonged to an entire community of specialty movie buffs or online gamers, the source of your higher-tech shared pleasure would have vanished anyway. Everyone in the community would have to learn how to entertain each other. In the process they might learn from each other and evolve a whole new aesthetic. In societal collapses, the arts don’t vanish, but they become folkish. The number of actual people participating in the arts increases.
    4. When people have a basic idea of germ theory, cuts don’t automatically become septic. In the absence of more comfortable drug store antiseptics, people would simply dump salt in them and wrap them up in boiled cloth. Painful, but effective. Also, nobody’s going to lose the ability to create alcohol; it’s far too popular! Prehistoric people made it, after all, and people have even figured out how to make pruno in prison.
As for other medical preparations, the health care crisis in America has seen a great rise in people who know herbal remedies. Lots of people now know that you can break a fever, for instance, with willow-bark tea, which has the same ingredient as aspirin. Again, these remedies will not be as reliable and predictable as precisely measured laboratory preparations, but they’d still be better than nothing.
As for maintaining the lives of the disabled, your best bet is to learn as much as possible and become a font of information worth preserving. Even Denisovians preserved the life of an elder with no teeth left, evidently chewing food for him, presumably because of his wisdom.
    3. Agreed that children would work. However, it would not reach the horrific levels of the Victorian era because the tech for that simply wouldn’t exist. There would be no pressure to mass-produce anything. And while children would not go to school, there would be time around the evening meal to teach literacy, arithmetic, and anything else that would increase their odds of survival. They would learn their work from their parents rather than being sold into cold, anonymous factories . They wouldn’t be overworked because parents would want as many surviving offspring as possible, whereas a factory boss could always find more waifs to replace the ones he used up.
    2. Bullets would run out pretty fast. Good luck finding more lead to replace them. There’s a reason why one of the best military maneuvers you can accomplish is cutting off the enemy’s supply-lines. High-tech weaponry is too high-maintenance to last very long. Shotguns would last, with reused shells stuffed with nails, glass and gravel, but they’re more a defensive than an offensive weapon.
The reason making someone an outlaw, in the old days, was a punishment, not a perk, was because once the community turned its back on you, and declared that no law protected you, you wouldn’t live very long. The age of piracy flourished because for the first time outlaws could have a mobile base of operations that they could sail out far from angry communities seeking revenge. Raiding bands would quickly be put down like a pack of rabid dogs.
Regarding your hypothetical isolated family farm, it would not stay isolated for long. A good, working farm would become the hub of a new community as people left the unsanitary conditions of a city whose sewers no longer worked and with no safe place to dig outhouses. Since the newcomers couldn’t tell asparagus from potatoes from looking, and would likely poison themselves trying to eat the wrong part of the latter if they just stole the land, they would do a lot better leaving the farmers alive and learning from them by working for them. If they bide their time learning to assassinate him and take over later, one of two things would happen in the years before they could do that. 1) they would wind up bonding with those they work for, or 2) the rest of the community would put them down.
    1. Your final point shows why #2’s Mad Max scenario wouldn’t get very far. In the final analysis, we are pack animals. We survive better working together than apart.

In fact, it's been theorized by some that most of the diseases that currently plague humankind, domesticated animals, and those related to them, originated in the petri-dishes that were our earliest cities before the invention of sanitation. So survivors of cities fan out into the countryside and learn from farmers how to deal with manure, including their own.

Nope, if you want to grow enough crops to feed a social group, then a plough drawn by oxen or horse, is a necessary, you need the depth of soil turnover, and precision of seed planting that horse drawn implements can provide, after the plough, the narrow to break up the clods, and then the seed drill to maximise the success of the crop.. kids poking the soil with a sharp bent stick and broadcasting the precious seeds, won’t cut the mustard, the yield will be so poor, it won’t feed the community. The old adage pre the plough and seed drill, was
“One for the rook, one for the crow, one to fail, and one to grow.. In other words, old fashioned broadcasting of seed on a lightly ploughed field.. you needed to plant four times the amount of seed as you do using a proper plough. And horse drawn seed drill.. and in a world where seed corn, is going to be in short supply, that would be hugely wasteful.

Any organized group with any sort of intelligent leadership, would protect their horses. I bike everywhere, and I am here to tell you, bikes are nowhere near as durable as TT thinks. They still require parts, oil, and especially tires, chains etc. Once clean, flat, paved streets go away, your bikes durability will go away with it. Bikes are far less resource intense than oil-powered vehicles true, but, horses still beats bikes.
Weak, disorganized hungry people, will probably eat horses, yes, I agree with that. But, any kind of organized community? No way. Only way a horse would be eaten in a well-lead community was if it suffered an accident or was too old to work or be used as a mount.

I often point out to people, about the injuries and infection, that not only would you not have access to antibiotics to treat them, but cleaning them and suturing them would be extremely difficult too. On top of that, people will be working hard to survive, and that's going to mean that you get a lot more dirty cuts than you do today, making your chances even better of getting an infection.

When modern people think “post-apocalyptic” they usually think of a modern society crushed by a nuclear war or weird bio-engineered plague, but any student of history would know that in a lot of ways, we’ve actually been there before.
Compared to the Roman Empire in, say, 200 AD, medieval Western Europe of 400 AD was pretty dang post-apocalyptic. Society took a HUGE step down in a very short time after the fall of the Empire, and A LOT of ancient knowledge was lost that we still may not have completely re-discovered.

Now, I wasn't a tiny, tiny preemie needing a special hospital, etc w a NIC U, etc. I weighed 5 lbs @ birth & lost it down to 4.5 lbs. Now, they measure these tiny infants in ounces! They'd not be viable. Poor souls.
2: Polio was gone, except here & there. I had Infantile Paralysis @ 2.
3: Measles (not Roseola in this case.) I had it twice & am still careful to avoid children who might have it. That was still very scary while I was pregnant with our sons.
4: Chicken pox. It was miserable to have & miserable trying to keep our sons from scratching & cooling their high fevers.
5: Every year, as a child, I'd suddenly spike a temp. By the time I complained, it was 101*F. It just kept going up, resulting in antibiotics & oxygen tents which were cold & clammy.
6: Our first child was breech. I think a knowledgeable midwife could have turned him, but, otherwise, we would have died.

And lets face it were not awash in expertly made bicycles. No most are cheap Chinese imports that break down in a year. And how many inner tubes can you stock pile?

Few of the European people had resistance to water born diseases. Most people didn't boil it even though they were told to. There was a severe shortage as well. Wood and fuel were a problem even though coal was just 70 miles away. Animals and people got sick and died at the rivers and waterholes. It was said you could smell a water hole from 10 miles.

    - When chemical- and nuclear storage facilities are abandoned and neglected on a global scale, everybody will just be prolonging their lives, only to perish from poisoning later.
Post apocalyptic life is an illusion. Fantasy. Everyone will die or long for death within months.

Or you just visit Detroit. It's like a post apocalyptic documentary. But in real time

Here is what people always forget in post-apocalyptic fiction: you’re going to lose millions of people in the first 30 days, regardless of the type of apocalypse. Seven million people are on insulin; they will begin to die with days of running out of insulin. Approximately 470,000 people are on dialysis-they are all gone 10 days after their last treatment when there are no supplies /power/labs/blood supply/infrastructure/nurses. About 190,000 have kidney transplants, about 2,000 a year get heart transplants, 2,500 get lung transplants...all gone when the drugs preventing rejection are gone. People who are on longterm ventilators, people who have PEG tubes and are bedridden from strokes, those who need extensive hands on healthcare, gone. People who need blood pressure meds, HIV meds, gone. People on drops for glaucoma-blind. Children who need a cochlear implant remain deaf. If you get an infection without antibiotics, you could have a fatal sepsis. People without their medication to manage schizophrenia, psychosis, depression will have short, miserable lives. Everyone will have buried someone they cared about. No thanks. If an asteroid is coming to earth, like the dinosaur killer, I just want to be there when it hits. No desire to have a short, horrible life in the aftermath, burying the patients I can no longer help.

Don't forget to add, in the big cities people will start starving in 3 or 4 days if the food stops flowing in to the cities. What's the population of NY City? 8.39 million. How many would be alive 30 days after the spice...uh, food stops flowing. A few thousand that were willing to eat the others? So add another 8+ million to your total!

I absolutely love that you are using footage from "The Postman." It had it's flaws, but its view of a post-apocalyptic world I have only seen in shows like "Jericho" and "Revolution."

Why do you have back to back INFOMERCIALS on this video ??

That's UA-cam's fault. Creators have no say in what advertisements are shown on their videos. I think the only control creators have is the amount and frequency of Advertisment markers on their videos (unless someone else claims it and shoves them in themselves)
