Completely agree, much better looking and performing car than the MK2. Thanks for the update on the project and look forward to seeing you go through the pain and pleasure of getting it back on the road.
I had a manual 3.8S for a time. Lovely car. Wonderful driver. Unfortunately, it's not made for people with very long arms. Every time I turned, my elbow would smack the wood door capping! When I complained to my wife about the space, she convinced me to sell it and find something larger. That was a 1960 Mk IX.
I was 12 years old in '70 and I was friends with the guy next door, same age as me. His father came home with a nearly new S type 3.8 automatic one day, white with wire wheels. . He'd just got an inheritance from the farm I found out later, his father had just passed away. My friend Sam invited me to go for a drive to the other side of town one day in the back seat as his parents were heading off for another excuse to go for a drive in the new car .The memory of the intoxicating smell of the leather and the multitude of gauges and switches has never left me. The first car I'd been in to see 100mph on the speedo. 54 years later, I still want one. Thanks for posting
Beauty. I'd like to see you test drive a 420G
A very clever comparison Adam. A 4 door "e"type indeed . I recall seing an immaculate 3.8 m.o.d in lndigo with chrome wires and thin white walls forsale in 1984 for £400 . I'd just bought my second home so couldn't justify it . Thanks Adam
And more beautiful than a mark 2 :-)
Lovely day for a lovely drive in a lovely Jag. That model is elegant, the rear end especially. I have a friend who has one, it is British racing green in colour, a real beauty. What colour will you have yours painted ?
I 100% agree with you on your "controversial" opinion. I definitely prefer this by a mile to a Mk2.
I agree 99%% with your statement that the S-Type is like a 4 door E-Type! To agree 100% you would have to say that the S-Type is the closest thing you can get to an E-Type. Back in the early days of my life-long love affair with the E-Type, I got into a little bit of a disagreement with a wall when my '66 oversteered off the road. With my pride and joy off the road for a few months, I needed transport and bought a 3.8 S-Type manual with overdrive. What a lovely car! It handled well and while not as fast as my E-Type, it was a pleasure to drive. I wish I still had it today. Thanks for the video and the memories.
It sounds smooth and solid. Great car.
Stunning car. It's easy to see why you want one.
I've got a Daimler 420 (same as s type from the front windscreen back), keep hoping you will do more on stripping your old s type. Need to know how to do wood around roof and headlining
That car sounds great, enjoyed the drive!
Wire wheels suit the colour combination well. Good to hear the merits of the S Type applauded. The 3.8 had a limited slip differential as standard which further improved the IRS system. Thank you for a most informative channel
S type superior to the mk 2 I would say. A much better suspension and handling :-)
Hey Adam, hi guys, I really recommend Adams Merch. Just received my T with the DD6 firing order for my birthday and it absolutely rocks. U R the man, Adam. keep it coming. best
While I prefer the lines of a Mark II over the S, I can see where the S can be more suitable for a family. More room in the interior.
Definitely put a leaper on the hood of an S. It was made for one.
Beautiful car indeed. You may want to consider a Tremec TKX manual for your car.
Wonderful Jaguar, credit to the owner.
Awesome that you're progressing with this car! Whenever it's time to replace an old transmission. Always take the opportunity to switch to manual if it's automatic. You can't go wrong. if you go automatic you'll regret it. If you go with the manual you'll never regret it.
A popular police car here in London during the 1960’s.
Also my favourite Jaguar from the 60's... Lovely.. (Phil)
They’re fantastic
Hello Adam, a 340 owner here from the uk. The manual ovedrive gearbox in mine a later car is much nicer than the moss box and FYI the power steering is better as well. As much as I love the S Type I can not get over the fact the rear doors look out of place so still prefer the looks of MK2. Having said all that my favourite of this era is probably the 420.
Stunning car ❤
Pretty car, I really like your painted wires, so much more practical than chromed ones.
Stunning car - and yes, Leaper is okay 60s and earlier, anything else NO. Cost £800 for a Leaper delete on my 1992 Daimler Double Six
Apparently, in the UK, Jaguar stopped fitting the bonnet cat in 1970 when the 420G was retired. The XJ6/12 did not have the bonnet cat. It seems that US dealers continued to fit the bonnet cat until around 2005 when safety regulations forbade it.
Wheels look ace! I am so excited to see you start more work on your s-type. I agree with your choice of a manual trans. Mega cars these s-types!
They’re great!
An S type passed me today..( rare here in The US ..Pennsylvania)
They are very rare here too
Another great video Adam love the car and your will be spectacular when you get it finished a manual transmission with overdrive is the way to go for sure best regards Andy Allen.
Great video. Could an XJ40 autobox into your S-type be a possibility? To see you do it could be an inspiration for a lot of us out here....Thanks 🙂
Glad to hear you have plans for your S Type, I am in the closing stages of finishing my MKII. I would suggest a Tremec 5 speed box they are great also I would upgrade the front brakes, I have put on a Wilwood kit.
Here's a small tip for you when applying the hand brake keep the button pressed in until you reach the stopping point then release the button, if you continue to apply it the way you do the ratchet will be worn out and then the handbrake will release when you don't want it too.
I like the S type, got one and it nearly back on the road. Would love to see you restoring yours.
Thanks for the ride around in this S-type and for the update on your car. Love these cars.
Glad you like them!
🇦🇺👍 Great choice Manual!
I agree, Adam. Manual is the way to go, the LT77 is a good unit, lasted in the Discovery until 1993. Even though it came from the dark days of BL!
Because of this, they also bolt straight to the back of the Rover V8, so a perfect choice for your P6, should you so wish.
Myself, I would use a Getrag 5 speed out of an XJ40 (STRONG box!) but whatever suits.
The Adwest power steering is horrific in that era, weighs an absolute ton (iirc also drives the alternator in the same body). So a lighter more modern set up would IMHO be preferable. But that's just my preference, it's your car so your choice!
Don't know if you've seen, but Matt Furious has got his 4.6 P6 on the road now, think he should do a road trip to Sweden to compare with yours!!! 😊
Great channel, love your videos, all the best to you and your family, and hope you are doing well as a UA-camr!
Hi Adam really nice car I think a manual would be the go I'm currently rebuilding a 12c and concidering making it a manual as I have a completed 12c in original condition any suggestions as to what gearbox might suit love the Chanel
That is a beautiful car.
Yes it is
Video approved it's a classic, click.
Hi Adam, Im an owner of a '66 jag 420, could you recommend me a reliable source of spare parts? My earlier favourite caused disapointment.😊
Hi, your 420 is one of the very early ones as they came out in 1966 , i too have a 1968 420 manual /od
