Curiosity, ingenuity and perseverance starts the XJRS!
Something so satisfying after working on a V12 dead motor for so long and then finally getting it going. Its almost magical.
Troubleshooting Jag V12 is a very frustrating process! Mine ended up being the ECU but took many hours to find. Your perseverance is inspiring to anyone who faces the same issues. Well done!!
Same thing happened to me. I gave up after replacing the distributor, fuel pump, fuel injectors, and spark plugs. My $250 per hour Jag mechanic 21:13 finally traced it to the ECU located in the trunk.
What a growl that cat has. Beautiful!!
Adam you need a bigger workshop with a good hoist always loved the jaguars since my first mark 2 that I bought in 1977 from bonnie Scotland 🏴
Every time I hear a motor trying but failing to start, my stomach tenses up, as I try to will it into life. After this, I'm exhausted!
Your persistence and thoroughness is admirable. Looking forward to hearing it run properly.
It is exciting to hear an engine fire up the first time
I always like watching the xjs videos.
Good morning Adam,, I've been a licensed technician for over 46 years.. worked on thousands of cars, and especially on British cars.. one thing i learned immediately was if it came from somewhere else or person, I start always at TDC. You are very competent and knowledgeable about these creatures, and at the risk of lecturing ...It answers several questions,, compression,, distributor position,, and my favorite with an injector noid lights.. they are cheap and quick.. and of course with 2 people (not always possible) you can verify spark with a spark tester.. from there all questions are answered.. usually..lol..
Keep up the great work.. as mentioned before, convince the client to install a full mobeck system... Lol..
Being a XJR-S these have a stand alone ECU by ZYTEK there is a diagnostic cable and link lead required to a lap top for diagnostic and engine set up
Adam, I had similar issues with my XJS however with mine the injector harness deteriorated, it created short and fried the ecu making half of the injectors open all the time flooding the engine. New harness and used good upgraded ecu solved the problem. Great work !
Hey Adam, I’ve been really looking forward to this update since the first few videos with this car.
Well done, your persistence is paying off and it’ll be great to see this beauty back up and running smoothly.
It's worth the effort for such a rare and fantastic car.
It sure is!
I wish this video had been released about 2 months earlier when I started my SIII XJ12 rescue XD
Sadly this has nothing in common with any other Jaguar V12. The fuel and injection system is specific to just these cars
Good job;perspicacity pays
As always, very interesting, thanks for posting.
The XJR-S parts manual lists the fuel pressure regulator as a standard 5.3 regulator, EBC3387. A look at the fuel system diagrams show only that regulator in the system.
Have you checked the trip computer for OBD codes. The manual for the XJR-S says that you switch off the ignition, then switch on, CHECK ENGINE will be displayed, then the highest priority code will be displayed after 5 seconds. Other codes will only be shown after the first fault is cleared and deleted. Then the next highest priority code. You have to fix and clear the codes in turn.
Timing is fixed at 10° and can be checked at the crankshaft if the following conditions are met:
Water temp above 165F
Engine speed below 1000 rpm
Throttle position between 276 and 335mv
Road speed zero
No faults present.
Didn't know if you had this info or not.
Thanks you! Do you know what the fuel pressure should be? It was about 55-60 psi for me
Also this uses the 6 liter fuel rail and pressure regulator. It is different than an HE or an earlier XJR-S which was more HE based
@LivingWithAClassic I finally found the fuel pressure spec, in the diagnostics section for the O2 sensors!
Idle, vacuum connected, 28 psi nominal
Idle, vacuum disconnected, 36.5 psi nominal.
That's lower than the later factory 6.0, which was around 3 bar.
The XJR-S manuals I have are from 1992. What year is that car? Are you sure it's got the correct rail and regulator on it? Maybe that was something else they screwed around with.😂
@jonalowe it’s a 1992. The fuel rail that was on it looks original to it. It was connected with factory looking fuel lines that were dated to 1992. They are not in the correct location for an HE fuel rail.
Could you email me at livingwithaclassic@gmail.com
Would be great to be able to brainstorm a bit
@@LivingWithAClassicWill do.
Yes indeed, well done man
I noticed that in the video it was still very cold as your breath was showing . It was 116 degrees here in Yuma , AZ. yesterday . I am happy to see u in the shop working . My interest are in watching actual repairs so looking forward to part 2 .
This was filmed over about 8 months or so. Part of it was filmed in January when it was cold
Very interesting video thanks Adam.
Wow, that was a true challenge! Great job. Running properly, it's going to sound fantastic.
This is so close to being a fabulous car ! A real winner for the channel…
Hi. Funnily enough I bought one of these at auction a year ago; exactly the same colour, year and spec. Had a mare with the braking system getting the ABS pump to play ball, my mechanic mate and I have decided to replace with a standard non-ABS XJS system
Wow Adam you are the man such determination and all the research you have more patience than most people a win for sure getting it running and we all wait to see the next part thank you so much for this Adam best regards Andy Allen.
Great work!
Thank you!
Nice job Adam, those Jaguar V12s are a pain in the @$$😮
They usually aren’t but this is a special case because an XJR-S
@@LivingWithAClassic I've been playing with Triumphs and MGs as of late 😉
What a great car! Would really much like to own one. But they are hard to come by and prices are a bit over my budget, but maybe if I sell a couple of cars....Anyway, nice to see this being rescued!
They are rare and well a bit different to work on. I do like them but I think Listers are even cooler
@@LivingWithAClassic A Lister would be something else! I have a couple of 90's Maseratis and a Jaguar XJR(x308)....and I am thinking, slowly, of buying a Venturi! But these are remarkably rare beasts!
Good job!
Thanks!
kitty kitty purr....jaaaa! den startar!
I had this problem with the 6 l with two coils A&b it would start barely run as soon as the accelerate ended up being the two coils are crossed at the distributor cap
The Jaguar V12 seems complicated, maybe i am wrong, they can run very well but they can fussy unreliable too!!
Normal V12s aren’t complicated at all. This TWR XJR-S is something complety different
Could you by any chance make an overview of the most important relays on the S1-3 XJs? I cannot find any real information on my early S3 H.E. XJ12 and can't get power to the ECU
I have a Jaguar sport training guide for this model the distributor timing is set up once the laptop is connected and it locks the timing then you adjust with a timing light idf you need any info get in touch
The Zytec computer does not monitor
Fuel pressure like a modern ecu
The twin fuel pumps my have built in
Regulator back there in tank that failed causing higher pressure that
May be the problem that would
Overwhelm the fuel rail just a thought.
That is my thought since the pressure is so high. I will run it with the correct fuel pressure externally again and then pull the tank.
Does that car have Cadillac converters? They could be partially melted or have partially clogged the exhaust system as well. with the unknown history could have even had rodent nests possibly in the exhaust. Sounds great so far though. Can't wait till the next segment.
was having similar issues on my s3, was the coil.....
Here it is a fuel pressure and timing issue along with an injections system that is completely different to any other Jaguar V12
How was the extra displacement achieved? Stroke?
Yes stroke, different crank and a few other things
like 421 !
👍🇦🇺
Hi, the injectors you've fitted are not the correct one, the Denso injector fitted to the XJ12 (x305) are 14ohms your car need the 2.5 ohms Bosch 0280155007 EBC2409. You should service the old injectors. Good Luck...
They were the same parts number as the ones that came off the car
@@LivingWithAClassic Interesting normally the grey ones are Denso injectors fitted to the XJ12 with the Denso ECU. The Bosch injectors are black and white.
Just watching, up to about the 17 minute mark. Thinking it'll definitely be due a oil change with all that fuel going into the oil..
I'm guessing this video is going to have a happy ending tho..
Great channel..
