    I have been following you for about a year now, and as a farmer for almost 50 years I have Learned a lot from you. Your channel is one of the best Homesteading sources out there. At 60 I sold every thing I had In Arkansas moved to an island in the Southern Bahamas and started all over. I was told I would not have much success gardening in the sand and salt here. WRONG; my garden was so successful after 3 years I reduced the size to half. I now keep chickens, rabbits and a milk goat. I am dolng reacher on honey bees.
    P.S. your are not talking too much. My personality is pretty Blan, so I enjoy listening to you. ❤️👍

      Your message was just what I needed to hear, it’s always been my dream to do bit of homesteading but never found the way to do it. Now at 61 I can but wasn’t sure if it was a pie in the sky ’Ive always done the duty thing, now it’s time to follow my heart

      That sounds like a dream life ❤️
      I haven’t gone in a few years but have vacationed in isla Mujeres Mexico several times, while there I noticed they don’t grow any vegetables, they rely on everything imported to the island. They have piles of palm fronds and seaweed that could be composted but it’s not, I’ve just dreamt of changing the food supply on that island !!!
      Anyhow, I’m up here in zone 3 of northern Minnesota with a very short growing season 😏
      Happy gardening 😍

    You don’t talk to much, you teach and that requires words. You give information that can be overlooked by others.
    Some people just want to be told the shortcut to how to do things rather than understand the problem and solution. The problem with that is like the story about the proper way to cook a ham. A woman was cooking the holiday ham and started by cutting the rounded end off. Her husband asked her why she did that. She responded that that was the proper way to cook it; the way her mother taught her. She then called her mother to ask why you needed to cut that end off. Her mother said because that was how her mother had always done it. The woman then called her grandmother and asked the same question. The grandmother responded, “because the only roasting pan I had was too small to hold the whole ham.”
    I want to know that what I’m doing is indeed the best way to do something and not some work around that doesn’t apply to me.
    The chit chat is like getting a little glimpse on what is happening with you which is great for prompting us to think about those little things that can easily fall through the cracks as we spend our time thinking about animals and gardens and such.
    There are so many UA-cam channels out there that if your style doesn’t work for someone they can easily keep looking for someone who presents in a way conducive to their learning style. You keep doin’ you.

      I'm amazed at how they can talk straight through each episode, no cuts or dead ends. There's a lot of confidence in their knowledge, especially of what they don't know or uncertain about. I wonder if some of the complaints are just sexist b.s. there's studies showing even when women speak less than a quarter of the time, they're still seen as monopolizing the time.

    I think we do the dusting all wrong these days. My Granny used to sprinkle water everywhere to keep the dust from flying up before sweeping. We learned from her to damp dust. Use a wet cloth to wipe down instead of flicking round fluffy dusters. I don't think I would want tea or coffee smells. Would it not encourage a bit of mold? Maybe a spray bottle with water and some lemon, vinegar, essential oils, or something in it. Great videos. Thank you. Mx

    • @justpatty7328
      @justpatty7328 2 роки тому +3

      Yes, they certainly did. The damp tea leaves and coffee grounds do absorb the dust. Kept the gunk on the ground instead of in the air. Just push into dust pan and toss into the garden.

    Thank you both so very much for this video,!!! Regarding the fat used to condition leather, we've learned to never leave those gloves outside or anywhere where wild or domestic critters can get a whiff of that scent, you will loose your gloves. The sweeping with damp tea leaves is interesting, I wonder if just using a fine mist spray of water (and essential oil) might do the trick too, without the added mess? With the Moon phase, I agree, there certainly is good science to that. As Christians we would never consider or believe in something 'magical'. I used to think it was all 'voo-doo" But the science behind it is true as far as the gravitational pull on fluid during the Waxing moon. Both my husband and I are from farming families and grandparents and great grandparents were God fearing Christians, they also used the moon phase system to plan gardening and other farm work. I personally have noticed that three days before and a day or two after the full moon, the fluid in my lungs and limbs very high and uncomfortable as I have a rare lymph node condition called 'LAMs disease', So after the full moon, my breathing improves and I feel great! I also notice our sourdough starter really gets ramped up right around the full moon, then shrinks back down after, and our ferments react the same! So thank you for talking about this and Thank you both again for sharing your most beautiful homesteading journey with us.
    Raven❤️

    Regarding fermenting: I took a slow cooker to a church potluck and ended up with someone else's lid, that doesn't fit right. I've bought a few at thrift stores but none of them fit well enough to take anywhere. I had thought to donate them back to the thrift store when it occurred to me, they would make great weights to hold things down when fermenting.

    Could you do a whole episode on the moon phase? I’m a night nurse, trust me there’s definitely something to the effects of full moons. I’d like to learn more about how we can apply that beneficially to the garden and kitchen.

    • @diannamc367
      @diannamc367 2 роки тому +1

      I heard someone talking about it like this (in regard to the garden)
      If the pull of the moon is strong enough to affect every tide on the planet, how can it not affect the water, etc in the soil.
      Not a comprehensive answer but, something to think about.

      Yes! I worked EMS, ER and then OB as a nurse. And the moon does have an affect somehow. 😂

      I'm positive you can learn a whole lot about moon phases here. Another good source is the current Old Farmers Almanac. They list moon phases for so many things, the part we pay attention to most are weaning, and gelding signs. I grew up using it for this, and it is amazing what an easier time our livestock have if you do things such as this on the correct days. Moon signs definitely affect people, why not everything else around it. Love this channel.. I have learned more here than any other channel I've come across. ♥️

    We are in Missouri. Planning the garden and herb plantings for this year. Taking advantage of a few warm days cleaning fence rows, checking and revamping the garden fence from winter damage. We will be trying no till this year, most of what we do is in raised beds but we have a few row crops. Enjoy the pantry Chat and your other videos.

    So..they came for self reliance tutorials, tips and tricks and are surprised when you talk about them? Odd..I had my own cleaning business for years..when I had dusty places to clean I would bring in a humidifier prior to clean up. Especially construction clean up. Helps keep the dust down. Then just shop vac the heck out of it. Far less dust in the air to land back down and ruin all your cleaning after a day or so. Then wet dust after. Water and Murphys oil soap works pretty well. My tip for you.

      I use Murphy's almost exclusively! I even clean my paint brushes with it. Nothing else is as versatile in my 1940's house 🙂

You are a phenomenal woman and I first learned homesteading from your video you were the very first person that popped up in the algorithm. Please keep talking because things need to be explained. I will watch your videos several times and play them as I am making or prepping something. Thank you so much

I love the conversational tone you guys have and the chemistry between you. You already compromise and timestamp for people to skip the chitchat, plus it helps for coming back to reference something later. Chitchat over, now for the talking. LMAO! Love this channel guys. :)

    We’ve planted onions, kale, lettuce, alderman peas, pak choi, and spinach here on the Oregon Coast. I like how you mentioned the importance of the demeanor of the teacher you choose for your children. Something to think about since they will inevitably spend a lot of time with them. Right now we are doing an online/homeschooling hybrid with our children.

    We are in southern IN so we are in 6a zone. We just indoor seeded the spring veggies today. Can't wait til it warms up! This is a new garden plot (to me) and was used last year by someone else. I'm trying to find the cheapest way to get compost or manure onto the plots so the harvests will be large. I really am glad I found your channel cpl months ago, I've learned a lot!

And Carolyn I hope people’s unkind comments don’t diminish your cheerful spirit. Your upbeat attitude and wealth of knowledge has been such an encouragement when the weight of homesteading prep gets to be too much. Josh you as well are a pleasure to watch in equal measure. A similar method to keep the dust down is still used today. I worked at a large warehouse that had us sprinkle a reddish colored saw dust all over the floor and then sweep up. It had the same effect as the tea leaf suggestion you made. So that method/concept is still used today and a product is sold for it.

    The basement conversation cracked me up because my basement ceiling is 5.5feet lol. So I’m the only one who fits down there and because of how small and packed the space is(furnace, water heater, all the electrical, and plumbing) it’s almost impossible to do anything there lol.
    Maybe I should try to make it more usable for food storage!

    My grandfather would spray down the barn with water before he swept to keep the dust down. I don’t think just tea leaves are required.
    I’m still weeks away from starting onions. ~sigh~
