    Thanks for watching! Yes, I do take extra precautions and add an extra step in my glue-up before sending it through the planer. If you review my video, I added a strip of pine that was side-grain to both ends. By doing this, I get zero chip out and no end-grain explosions in my planer. I later just cut those strips off at the table saw.

    I like your cutting board, nice design. I thought it was a big NO NO to put end grain through a planer? I've read a few disaster stories on other websites. Do you do some extra prep or take extra precautions?

    Great video! Is there an advantage to passing the wood through the planer at an angle?

    • @WoodworkingManiak
      @WoodworkingManiak  8 років тому +1

      +Jared Shue Sometimes you have to work with the grain of the wood... I sent it in at an angle because I was getting some tearout.

    Nice rendition of a classic! Does your planer have a helix cutterhead? I use my Dewalt 735 for end grain boards with no problems but of course I'm jealous of your 20" capacity.

      +Pettigrew Woodworks I do not have a helix cutterhead in this planer. I did have one in my 15" planer that I had previously and miss it very much!!!

    +woodworkingmaniak Do you really enjoy the incra fence? I'm thinking about getting one. I would love to know the +'s and -'s to it. Great Video and beautiful work

    • @WoodworkingManiak
      @WoodworkingManiak  8 років тому

      +andrew jones That was one of the best investments I ever made for my workshop. It saves me time because I can trust the fence all the time and never have to use a tape measure at the fence. Also, if I ever have to go back and cut another part, I can. The only con is that the fence sticks out the end and uses more space when you extend it.

    i have tried to make a brick pattern, but have had cracking at the strips. how do you make the strips "end grain", as that is the problem with my 2 i have made thanks

    • @WoodworkingManiak
      @WoodworkingManiak  8 років тому

      +David Good I'm suspecting that you made the strips with edge grain wood and the rest with end-grain... That does not allow the board to move together seasonally, it will crack every time you do that. You have to make it ALL end grain.
      To do that: You have to make a separate end grain board (in my case in solid walnut) that is as long as the board will be length wise. Then cut that into strips to put between the bricks.
      That's what the glue up at 1:45 mark is for. Right after, you see me turn it into an end-grain board. Then I'm cutting it into strips at 3:04. :)

      So to say that you first pass the mineral oil and how soon after you pass the beeswax.
      Since already many thanks for the information Property

    • @WoodworkingManiak
      @WoodworkingManiak  8 років тому

      +Luiz Antonio Apply as much mineral oil as the board will soak in, then wipe off what is on the surface. No need to wait any extra time, you can apply the beeswax right after because the mineral oil never actually dries. The beeswax I make is a mix of mineral oil and beeswax (3 parts mineral oil to 1 part beeswax).
