    You were talking about the certified run.
    2 things,. First, that amp is extremely old. Components could be in need of replacement. If completely refurbished, I'd bet it would do considerably more power than it did.
    Second, it's an early class D design. They were not known for sound quality. It's likely the technology just couldn't produce a clean enough signal to "pass" the certified test. Not to mention that certification didn't exist back then.

    The MMATS amps are definitely nice looking amps. I've installed a few for customers back in the late '90's- early 2000's and they performed well.

    this amp was one of my first crazy loud 12" systems, I had one of these along with two 12" RF HX2's in a 1994 Cavalier, my dad and I put in a rear seat from a Z24 Cavalier(cause it folded down) and I had two AC Delco batteries in the trunk, the box was ported (built by a buddy at a local car audio shop for $75.00) it hammered hard, windows rattled, rear view fell off and would get crazy loud for that time in car audio

    Rated power plus some, small footprint and incredibly efficient. Will run fine off most stock alternators with little more than a big 3 upgrade, also sound great on subs with excellent control and accuracy.
    Built like tanks and reliable too

    David Thompson the owner of MMATS told me a long time ago that MMATS came from the German word Stamm which translated means trunk. Like the trunk of a tree. So now you know. And it’s pronounced “mats”.

    You inspired me to put a volt meter on my new Kenwood Excelon 9005D to see what it's really putting out at 14 volts.

    • @wal
      @wal  7 років тому

      +Jeremy Leech thanks bud. What voltage did you get out of that HU? Do you have an o' scope to see clipping?

    • @jeffneedstogivejakeaturnon1083
      @jeffneedstogivejakeaturnon1083 7 років тому

      BigDWiz , O-scope? I ain't got no scope.
      My head unit is a 4 volt Kenwood x399.
      But, since I can't send a sine wave or measure it to clipping, I might not be able to get any meaningful numbers off of it.
      Hmmm, time to rethink this maybe.
      Or not. What's the worst that could happen!? lol

  • @firebirdude2

    Is this another example of class D noise affecting the SMD dyno? This is the very reason Sonic gave up on testing with the SMD dyno...

    • @wal
      @wal  7 років тому +1

      +firebirdude2 the Dyno's certified mode stops measuring at 1% THD. Uncertified mode was designed for many Class D amps according to Tony D'Amore. Not the Dyno's fault the amps can't produce clean power. I'm betting Sonic stopped testing amps b/c not many were meeting ratings and since they sell amps, this could affect sales. I don't know this as fact, just my educated assumption 🤔

    • @firebirdude2
      @firebirdude2 7 років тому

      +BigDWiz Hmmm. I wonder, specifically, what makes uncertified mode different? I'm referencing class D noise outside the audible frequency band OR even just outside the band normally used by subwoofer amplifiers. Example, if there was class D noise at 30kHz, does the dyno pick that up as distortion? I'm not arguing with ya, just trying to learn a bit more about the dyno. As I've watched folks have issues where it measures ridiculously low on amplifiers we all know output rated power plus.

    • @firebirdude2
      @firebirdude2 7 років тому

      +BigDWiz Separate note, are all of the dummy loads inside the dyno? What power level are the loads rated up to? I can google a picture of the guts of the AD-1, but it looks like ten 1000W dummy loads. But that somehow does all different impedances AND two channels simultaneously?? I guess a few ridiculously high current relays would help... but I don't see that in there.... Again, just trying to learn more about how it works.

    • @wal
      @wal  7 років тому +1

      +firebirdude2 there is a manual on the D'Amore Engineering website. It will handle up to 24kW at 0.5 ohm. There is a thread about the AD-1 at SteveMeadedesigns.com/board

  • @joshhanson6777

    They look a lot like the earthquake 200dhc's on the inside and out. I've heard a lot of people have clamped the earthquakes and got 2k at 1ohm. But the were rated at 1700 at 2ohm's I believe. I have 3 of these amps in my old school collection, 50% of the time when people are selling them as not working, there's a fuse hidden underneath the board and it's usually blown. I just replace it and jam!

      +Jorge Martinez nice! I've had a Canon 7D for several years, but it's too much work to set it up and set focus by myself. I like the way I can control the G7 via the iPhone app (focus, fstop, ISO and much more). Autofocus during video is still a bit slow, but they are getting better. Which lenses do you use? Probably Metabones adapted Canon or Nikon glass?

    • @jorgem50
      @jorgem50 7 років тому

      Yes G7 has many advantages over a 7D. I use a Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8, the kit lens sometimes for steadicam shots and in low light I'll use an old Canon FD lens with cheap $25 adapter. Best camera under $600 period!

    • @wal
      @wal  7 років тому

      +Jorge Martinez I should have splurged for the 12-35, seems like a nice lens. Speaking of steadicam, have you seen the new stabilization gimbals out for DSLR's and mirrorless cameras? That video footage is butta. I was considering the DJI Osmo mobile to use w/ my Iphone.

    Mmats is the German word Stamm backwards. It means stem of a tree (trunk) in its most common definition. And that is where the name comes from. Back in 97/98 a wholesaler near the factory had a dealer show and I was able to tour the facility by myself with the owner. Got to see prototypes of what became the pro series and juggernaut subs. The name story came from him.

    I say the lack of Dynamic power is due to the lack in larger capacitors! I have an Old Diamond D3 400.1 with dual power transformers and 50v 5600 UF caps! You Dyno'd an amp a while back that was made for Dynamic power and it had some huge caps that had to be laid sideways on the board and were like 3" long by over 40mm around! It is all about reserve, a large bank of smaller caps will have less reserve than a smaller bank of Large caps, but when it comes to instant power you will get faster cycles with the larger bank of smaller caps than you would with a small bank of like 2+ huge caps!
    Plus in an old Cart Stereo mag I used to get in the mail, there was a tale of the Class D and one of the first amp makers to manufacture them based upon his own home made version he used in the early to mid 1980's "He built amps for his own company in Florida" I just read MMATS is the company he started! It was still in it's early phases of development by the mid 1990's! It wasn't until the most advanced software that is available in recent years that has allowed them to become huge power houses as well as more efficient with extreme dynamic power capability!
    So obviously by this statement the guy I am thinking of started MMATS, By the end of 1995 we designed and engineered our very first true Class D mono-block amplifier for car audio. Many of our competitors sat on the sidelines and watched as we developed a niche market that is still being followed today. MMATS Professional Audio is THE company that pioneered the Class D topology for car audio use. There has never been a greater single design approach that totally revolutionized sub-woofer amplification.
    You should try to find the first LM-12 based MMATS Amp to Dyno! The actual beginning of MMATS Professional Audio was in January of 1990. By 1994 we brought our first amplifier to market. It was, at that time, a very high-end product utilizing a Military Spec part called the LM-12, a self-contained 150 watt operational amplifier in a TO-3 package. The T0-3 package is just like the Linear Power you dyno'd used! The guy was as important as Zed in the Car audio Industry and I had been getting a car audio mag since at least 1994!

    I pulled amp off the shelf to take a look at it and the video and they're the exact same board, mine is rated be 1200 watts at 1 ohm. I think 1400 was a selling point. Ive always heard good things about them. I never knew anybody that would really put a lot of money into the newer product without a long reputation and back in the day we put out a lot of money for good systems

    Knew a guy that had 10 of these in 90's chevy van.A shitload of batteries ( i think those yellow optima batteries were the big deal then),and 18 Ground zero's 15s(im not sure if they were the high end nuclears tho). He owned his own shop so it was much more possible,then for someone like me to do that. He was in the lower 160s,which was monster ground back then. Pretty sure it was a few years after ulma Gates had quit. I think the record was in the lows 170s at the time. He also swapped out this setup from originally using a US amp vlx400.

      @biffisgreat 7 років тому

      Vello Wilson my old belva front amp has a much better looking powersupply side than my ppi 2150 belva China 2 toroids 4 105c caps vs 1 toroid and 1 85c cap much better output section on the ppi amp though but my lanzar optidrive 500x2 korean board... kills both of them for a front stage for a fraction of the price

      I just think us old guys are thick and think new and cheap equals old pyramid and legacy bullshit when orion ppi and fosgate were killing it its sad but reverse engineering has happened my powerbass 1200.2 has way better parts than my old ppi am2300, 10 filtering caps 2 big toroids 4 5600 caps and 20 output transistors for less 200 bucks it's just better no dought best advice to a new guy to car audio you tube and Google the amp guts because the truth is in the guts

    big dwiz I love your channel but I'm just saying that belva amp did over 1900 dynamicly for 150 bucks thats pretty good, too bad it wasn't rated at 1k then people would love them. I've upgraded to 2 twistedsounds 2.8ks that do well over 3700 rms certified (4100 dynamicly) but they were 1000 bucks Canadian but my old ppi 2150 was 2100 bucks in '92 and my old orion 2200sx was even more, it's just crazy how the technology has changed, but I still swear my brothers old ppi am2050 is one of the cleanest loudest 100 watt amps I've ever heard old skool ftw #IMOUTAHERE

    • @wal
      @wal  7 років тому +2

      I just get ticked off when manufacturers "cheat" on the ratings. Just tell us what we are getting. Yes, the Belva is a great value for the watts per dollar. Only issue is there has to be some sacrifice on the cheap amps. They are still making money selling that Belva for 150 including the cost for shipping. Doesn't leave a lot for the cost of the components and assembly...

    • @biffisgreat
      @biffisgreat 7 років тому +1

      BigDWiz I agree, I just think it's crazy how much the tech. has changed, man when I was 18 all I wanted was an astro van with that big USAMPS power don't make fun of my purple amp, keep up the good work, and I'm sure old fellas like you and me will describe ppi orion fosgate 100watts is equal to pioneer 1000watts remember the car stereo review mag. when they tried to get a distortion rating on a ppi 2075 over 1%, went all the way up to a 100amp fuse, gave up and said it's the new bench mark

  • @ADR69

    Those amps were built for competition so they didn't care about the distortion. They even came with only a guarantee to work out of the box iirc, no real warranty

  • @myevilbanana
    @myevilbanana 3 роки тому

    Ya I think there was something wrong with that amp. CA&E tested it in Dec 1998 and got about your numbers @ 1% THD/ @ 12.5 volts. I have a D200HC and D500.1 in storage and can attest that tho small compared to some of today's maps with the right subs they definitely bump.
