We Are Marshall Plane Crash
The community of Huntington, West Virginia suffered a devastating loss when Southern Airways Flight 932 crashed into a hillside, killing many individuals associated with the Marshall University football program. The Marshall Plane Crash (Southern Airways Flight 932) is the inspiration for the movie We Are Marshall starring Matthew McConaughey as Jack Lengyel.
The cause of the plane crash is not known for certain but there are indicators. It may have been human error but also mechanical error. Sadly, it will likely never be solved. Regardless of the reason, this disaster documentary provides an overview of a horribly tragic event.

This is the clearest and most detailed doc for its length I've yet seen on this tragedy. This disaster truly hit close to home. People still talk about it today and hold a memorial ceremony each year for the victims.

It would have certainly been easy to make this video much longer. There was so much information to process that I had to keep myself from going on tangents when researching. One fascinating fact I should have added is that there was a plane crash just a month prior to this one that killed 31 college football players for Wichita State. Such an unusual coincidence.

My grandpa Harold Johnson was highjacked in 1972 ," Southern Airways Flight 49 November 1972, Frank Abbott was the best Pilot my grandpa knew but he was his best friend as well, he has some information on that flight that others don't but think of this Frank Abbott happened in November 1970, D.B. The crash site is about two miles from where I live. As a Son of Marshall, this is something we will always remember. It’s part of who we are…and a demonstration of how far we’ve come. In three days, it will have been 53 years. #ForThe75
My first cousin Larry Sanders #40 was killed in that plane crash. I was 16 yrs old at the time. I'll never forget that evening when we got the word about the crash...Devastation and grief 😭
There were 6 football players who could not be identified and they are buried together in Spring Hill Cemetery. My friend Mike Blake was one who could not be identified. A horrible time for all of us!,

@@azdrone233 There are 6 people who could not be identified because they were burned beyond recognition. Technology wasn't what it is today. I'm surprised their bodies haven't been exhumed so that they could run DNA tests and finally identify each of them.

What you don't know:One of the 6 players buried in the mass grave,#24 Kevin Gilmore from Harrison,NJ,was a transfer from a junior college who had only one other offer from a what then could be a Div.1 school.That school was Wichita State,a team that also had a plane crash a few weeks earlier.Wichita lost far fewer players.Would Kevin have been dead either way?We'll never know.

WOW! I remember when the Perfect Storm happened! There was ine fisherman who decided NOT to go on that tragic trip. He followed his girlfriend's advice NOT to go. Unfortunately, he later boarded a fishing ship in NC . He wanted to get the money! He died when that fishing boat sank!

I was a freshman football coach in Western Pa back in the 2000’s. I had a young man show up to summer camp in 2006. After the 2 week summer camp, his dad asked how he was doing. I said, he’s a smart kid but a bit timid. Pretty normal for a smaller framed young man at this level.
His dad said he had never played football before.
I asked why he decided to play this year…amd his dad replied “because they just made a movie about my college team”.
The movie had not come out yet…but I asked what movie.
He said…”I was a member of the young Thundering Herd”
He never said anything else and since I was only 4 months old when the plane crashed…I was totally in the dark about the story.
After seeing the movie when released…I was in shock that he was one of the team members after that terrible tragedy.
I never saw him after the movies release as his job relocated him before I ever got the chance. His boy only attended our school for a year and a half.
My wife and i, live a couple of ridges over from this airport. A couple times a day, fedx airplanes fly over our house. Sometimes so low you can read the identification numbers on the planes. Sometimes they fly over late at night. The lights from the plane light up the whole mountain side. I often think of the people flying those planes. I was very young when that crash happened. But it forever changed this community. It touched so many people in this community. I've been to the memorial several times. Its a very somber feeling standing there. The people of this community will never let the memories of these individuals disappear. They will always be shown respect by everyone here.

That unfortunately that was the 2nd deadly crash, the first being the fatal crash of the Wichita State football team on October 2nd 1970. I was in the marching band at the University of Memphis at that time. Nearly all of the Wichita players were 3rd string, and our coach played most of 2nd and 3rd string players

This is 1of those incidents where I remember who told us about the crash and where I was at. I was in 7th grade and my Cadette Girl Scout troop had planned and held a party to fulfill a requirement for a merit badge. When one of the dads came to pick up his daughter, he told us about it. We were stunned.
The airport sits on top of a mountain. About 400 ft above the Big Sandy River and the Ashland Oil Refinery. So the reason they couldn't see the run way was because they were already below it. As it was a charter flight, I don't believe either pilot had ever flown into Huntington before.
I work at this airport now and cant imagine what went through these pilots heads that day. Very scary. But our airport is the smallest safest one I’ve ever seen lol
How is it possible to have an airport on a mountain top??
My aunt worked at Tri-State airport for many years and lived just a 5-minute drive from the airport. In winter, with leaves off the trees, I have seen the airplane navigation lights going along the runway, which was higher than her front yard. Trust me when I say that the landing strip is not on a mountain -- at most, it's a low ridge. If you watch "We Are Marshall," in the opening scene you are coming in over the Ohio River from Ohio toward West Virginia -- those wooded hills in the background are as high as the terrain gets. NOT a mountain. We're talking a few hundred feet above Ohio River level, not thousands.
@nancyharman4795 So when you leave Tri State Airport you go down the "hill" about 400 feet and you go by the old Pilgrim Glass factory. My father in law was a FAA DPE based in Huntington for 30 years. He owned a Baron, 172, and a Champ. My wife probably had 5000 landings at that airport. Answer this. How far above the Big Sandy River is the runway? And in-between the refinery and the runway, is it corn fields or heavily wooded?
@@Head-ck4huTopographic map shows Tri-State Airport's runway elevation is 250m/820ft above sea level. The section of Big Sandy River closest to the runway is 163m/534ft above sea level. The runway lies 286ft higher than the river -- less than the length of a football field. Since most geologists agree that a mountain is defined as "a landform that rises at least 1000 feet above its surrounding area" [regardless of its elevation above sea level], the runway is not located on a mountain.
I fail to see the connection between cornfields/wooded areas and elevation. If you are implying that I have never been to that area,, you are mistaken. I freely admit to having only a rudimentary knowledge of the local geography: how to get to my relatives' homes in Ceredo, Huntington, and Barboursville. Since everyone in my parents' and grandparents' generations are now deceased, I haven't visited the area in the past 20 years. But my aunt's house was sandwiched in between Goodwill Road (Riverside Drive when i was a kid) and Twelve Pole Creek.
I stand by my assessment that the runway is on a hill; only a flatlander could consider it a mountain. If you've truly never seen a real mountain in your life, get on I-64 to Charleston, then head south on I-77 to Beckley. Those huge wooded things towering up to the sky -- those are MOUNTAINS. If you pass Beckley and head toward Princeton, as you start down Flat Top Mountain, you'll see a number of mountain ranges spread out before you, the farthest ones in Virginia. Your airport HILL appears quite paltry in comparison to real mountains. If you see more of the world, perhaps you wouldn't feel the need to pick fights on social media. I don't need to fight; I deal with facts.

I was a Northwest Airlines flight attendant and flew with many former Southern and Republic flight attendants. On one trip, the Lead goes on to tell me that she was originally supposed to work this charter but her friend's parents lived in Huntington so she switched trips with her so she could be at home with her parents. She lived with that the rest of her life. Fate can be so crazy.
That airport sits on top of a mountain. Flown into it many times. You are below the ridge line on both sides coming into landing. There is also an oil refinery on that approach. It lights up a lot of area. That is where the smoke in the conditions came from. I think the refinery, the fog and rain and the smoke from the refinery messed them up. The mist on that mountain is like soup.
Exactly 20 years later on the exact same date November 14, 1990, Alitalia flight 404 (also a DC9) did the same thing. Flew into the ground short of the runway. How ironic is that?

When you start lightning the plane load 5 thousands of pounds so you can take off you're in trouble already. They should never have taken off may God grant them peace for all eternity
I watched this movie a few times when I was younger didn’t realize they used the airport in my hometown to take off from before the crash. (Kinston NC)

Deadman was NOT convinced to keep the program going by Lingyel. In fact Lingyel (the replacement head coach) wasn’t even hired until after the decision not to shudder the program, was made.

If my pilot is using the word “ ain’t” I’m already skeptical of his education.
I have a Masters Degree from Duke University. After retiring from the military and returning home to Athens County, Ohio (home of Joe Burrow) I find myself using that word a lot more. I think it is a regional ‘thang.’ Marshall University is maybe 90 miles away. And sometimes it seems to be used for emphasis. I have heard generals say ‘ain’t’ when speaking to troops.
I read that all the local stores sold out of hotdogs and marshmallows that night.
"...descending at 750 feet per SECOND?" That's 45,000 feet per minute. I don't think so. It was more than likely a 700 to 800 feet per minute rate of descent. And that, of course, is a normal rate of descent to maintain a 3° glide slope at 140kts ground speed on Tuesdays. If it's a Saturday, you're on your own.
Feet per minute, not feet per second. On the descent rate is the call out on the VSI - vertical speed indicator.
